Do you need help? >> No. >> All right. He did what? >> You want fire? At least get her upright. >> She said she's >> But like I wasn't going to kill her. So I wasn't going to I've been feeding her and you know what I'm saying, but I just can't have her out. >> When people are held against their will by an asalent, they usually cling to the hope of a miraculous police intervention, not knowing when help will arrive. But what really happens when these officers show up just in the nick of time to save them? >> He had to beat on me when I was pregnant. He had me out to where I passed out. Woke up to him. >> First of all, it's not a domestic cuz she ain't been touched. >> We're conducting an investigation. >> Domestic not compliant. >> I'm compliant to what my mother told me to do. >> Here are eight moments when cops have rescued hostages just in time. The first case takes us to Ohio where police officers rescued a 26-year-old man held against his will by his ex-girlfriend and five other men. >> What are we going on? What's going on? >> He's been missing for a few years. He dates this girl. >> Let Let me ask you one question. You want to be with these people? >> No. >> Were they holding you against your will? >> Yes. And And they were beating me. >> Okay. >> And I say I do not abduct anybody. I don't kidnap anybody either. >> Um Keep coming. Keep coming. Keep coming. Keep coming. Stop. On March the 21st, 2025, officers of the Ohio Police Department responded to a gas station after receiving a call from a woman reporting that her son had just escaped from a possible abduction attempt. They rushed over and immediately started asking her questions, hoping to get to the bottom of the situation. >> I didn't do nothing. I can see you guys. >> Hold on. Hold on for a second. >> 181 dispatch, I'll be out with the black minivan at the speedway. >> What are we going on? What's going on? >> He's been missing for a few years. He dates this girl and this has happened before. When she gets him, she uh isolates him. But I can't do nothing because he's an adult. I'm sorry. I don't mean to awesome, but he's on the spectrum and he's very easy easy manipulated. >> So this is your son you're talking about >> right here. This is my son. I just picked him up. I pulled up behind them and I said, "That's the car." And I looked I said, "That's my son. Get out of the car and get in my van." And I was on the phone with the cops. I said, "Do you want >> Okay, you're here. >> Don't be bruised up. >> If you you're going to get in the car, you're not doing nothing." >> Okay. Okay. Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Let have a seat in the car for a second. >> Just have a seat car. >> I can't believe you can't act like an adult. >> I'm acting like an adult. >> No, you're watch yourself. >> Okay, relax. >> So, you've been looking for him for a while? >> Two years. Okay. You haven't seen him for 2 years? >> So, what made you come to this? >> Oh my god. Look at him. >> Turn around. >> Turn around. Okay. >> But she saw the injuries that her son had sustained as a result of consistent assault. She was so alarmed that one officer had to take her away for a moment while another started questioning the victim. But just as he started talking, they realized that they're about to deal with one of these cases like from a horror movie. >> Talk to me for a sit. >> Sit down and shut up. >> I know you have >> all He's got a cut on the back of his head. So, look, there you go. >> My son is first. >> I'll take that off. I think we get that. >> There's a cut here, too. >> Yeah, we get >> this push into a door and they push me to my head. My head all crazy. >> Okay, hold on. Just >> put your stuff on cuz you're going to get cold. I am a >> Oh, these pants are mine. But yeah. >> Okay, just hold on a second. >> Just hold on a second. >> I was trying to put the No, no, she didn't say anything. She said that she saw the lady that >> she followed out. >> I see the one you walked off with my coffee. That's me. Damn. Coffee. >> Hold on a second. I'll talk to you when I'm ready. Okay. >> Just sit in your car and be quiet for right now. >> Why can't you listen? >> Please. Oh my god. >> It's okay. >> No, you come over here. You stay over here. >> So, let me start explaining what's going on. >> So, I force moved out. How old are you? >> 26. >> 26. Okay. Just 17. >> 26. What's going on? So, basically, I have a wife. She's She's got >> Okay. hit me up and >> it was cool when I first when I first moved in over cuz I this hotel was with somebody else or family on on >> where on the east >> it's to to >> okay >> and while I moved in I came over here she wasn't but one thing we let the house up and the dogs got you know how dogs are sometimes you know how they got to Right. And we're trying to break it up. Someone picked up a steel chair trying to break it up. They said, and I know I didn't. And then me I don't know. >> Where did this happen at? >> And and at the hotel last couple days and and and they me I don't like cleaning at all. Right. looks under my tongue. >> Who Who lives here? What room are you staying in? >> Uh they stay at 128. >> Who is >> Martina Chance and Martina Chance Michael and David? Have you been last too? I don't I don't know. They're both in there, but I know that they're lasting. That's all I know. >> You've been staying there for how long? >> I I staying there I've been I've been there for about maybe two weeks now. Where was I? Okay. I'm going to told you. Okay. >> Do you Let me Let me ask you one question. You want to be with these people? >> No. >> Were they holding you against your will? >> Yes. And And they were beating me. >> Okay. >> And >> let me see. Let me see. Like, do you have anything on your legs? I seen some of your stuff on your >> When did this happen? >> How fresh is this? >> Let's see. Yes. Yesterday. We w around. They hit me. They won't They won't let me sleep. They deprive me. I was in the car the one day, right? That's how they kept hit me to buckle one day. >> You got anything on your other leg? Meanwhile, the other officer was still interrogating the victim's mother, who had another shocking detail to reveal. >> He's not listening. >> No, because when he first left, they manipulated him. >> Willingly at first. >> Yes. And >> Right. But you can still report an adult missing. >> But I mean, like, what did I have to say? He left willingly. I But I didn't know that he didn't. I thought that he wanted to be with them. You know what I'm saying? Then I That's why I got him in the car and I said, "Honey, do you want to be with them? I'll leave. I'll leave if you want." No, I don't want to be here, Mom. Look at how beat up he is. They need to be arrested. Oh my god. >> Now, who who are the people that >> I don't know. It's Martina. He knows all their names. First and last name. >> Okay. Who are they to him, though? >> Oh, Martinez is his ex-girlfriend. >> And then there's a gentleman with him, too. >> Yeah. >> Apparently, it's there's two girls and a guy. >> Okay. So, what do you think he's on or anything like that? Okay. So, what what are the reasons for them like holding on to him or they just manipulate him? They treat him like garbage. >> All right. Please, >> if they won't let him have a phone or anything, you can't reach out. >> That's why you couldn't contact. >> After interrogating the victim and his mother, they turned their attention away to the suspect, curious to hear what she had to say after all the evidence that they had seen. >> I just have my permit to his car. >> Okay, I'll let >> you >> just outside the red roof in parking lot. >> The antique mall. >> At the antique mall parking lot. >> Cuz my hotel told me to take it off the property. parking lot. You up here? >> No, I'm okay. So, >> what what's going on? >> So, I had a friend of mine with me and >> 18, >> you know, he was with us willingly, but apparently he got tired of doing something at the hotel or whatever. So, he went over to me and told his people that he was in danger when he wasn't cuz you know if he was in danger. So, one of my neighbors called and said there was people in danger. He was willing with us. Perfect. He was in the back seat when they pulled up. He was perfectly fine drinking coffee. >> All of a sudden, >> his mom or I guess it was his mom. I don't know these people. They pulled up behind my car almost smacked the back of my car. The hotel lady saw it. We were parked over there and she literally pulled in the back of us and like their car was facing if your car was facing this way and they like our car was facing this way in the parking lot. They faced this way >> and they completely blocked us in. And the hotel they told me they had as soon as we got on the pull the cops road they took off. >> Okay. What's your name? >> My name's Martina. >> Martina. Okay. >> ID. >> Yes. ID. >> And does he have ID? >> And your ID? >> Like they call as soon as we said they're calling the police. Apparently, they've already called the police, but as soon as we said we were on the phone, police saying they were blocking us. They literally they literally they literally took off down that way around and around. >> I didn't know these people were. They called showed up. The dude threatened my husband saying he was going to get out and beat his the hotel lady heard it. >> The hotel lady heard it. She he said he was going to get out and beat his cuz we said we were going to call the police. All we were asking them was to take their son then and move away from our car. Who's um who who's the friend that was in the car? >> His name was >> Okay. So, how old 25 I think it was? >> Cuz the information came out that he was listed as a missing person or something. Is that >> No. >> Know anything about that? >> Hold on. Where's my phone? >> How many people are in the car here? Oh, >> my brother. >> Look, I can tell you he is not missing. This is his grandmother. We talk on a daily base. He even has went and voice clipped his grandmother. >> Just Just text me. >> Just text me. >> Amen. He He literally voice me. But she didn't believe it was at first. He said this, "Hello." Like, >> we were all having a good old time. He's laughing at everything. She took pictures like they knew where he was the whole time. >> Okay. >> Like, and here's the deal. They're acting like it was a kidnap situation. I mean, he's got some bruises on him because him and the boys be playing around like wrestling and stuff like boys. He's got some bruises on him, but now they think that we beat him. I said, "No." And he even walked out of here with a big old giant cup of coffee and everything. We were all just in the back seat chilling. They pulled up behind my car and blocked me and said that they're taking their son. They they got him out of my car and pushed him inside their van. >> So, he's special needs or something like that. >> Got a um stutter. >> That's it. But he's not like >> No, he is. He just got a stutter. It's not like he's autistic or developmentally disabled or anything like that where there'd be some sort of extra concern considering he's >> got >> Okay, >> but here's the thing. When they pulled up, they and then he all of a sudden started agreeing that uh I put my hands on him. They all put their hands on him. But he wasn't saying that at first. He was saying he didn't want to go with them and then tell his mom pulled him out of my youth passenger seat and put him in the car and then he started aged agreeing with everything cuz his brother was in there, his stepdad was in there and his mom was in there and his dad his stepdad was like telling us everything blah blah blah like yelling at him and they rolled up all the windows. They wouldn't even let the hotel lady talk to him. >> She continued talking with the agility of an ortor determined to cover up her tracks. >> Like this is ridic. I never met his brother. I met his brother once cuz brother showed up behind me and knew where he was. But he's sitting there saying we're beating him and all this stuff. I don't put my hands on people because I've been beat my whole child life and they know better cuz they know they go they go to jail. He came to us with bruises and stuff on him two years ago and he said that his stepdad was beating him. I know he's terrified of that dude. >> How do you how do you guys know him? >> I went to high school with him. >> Okay. I went to high school >> high school classmate then >> he's also an ex of mine >> but we stayed really good friends. >> Okay. >> His mom never liked me because of an old ex of his that treated him really bad and she looked at girlfriend like that. >> All right. So did were you guys near the office when all this happened? >> The office in the office. So >> she doesn't know what she literally came out and they were blocking my vehicle as soon as I got on. >> I told them they closed my vehicle. I thought that was help me out because I just paid my whole >> Let me uh >> And then we went to the trail. We went to the trail uh small creek park the other day and we have a husky and he got loose and he ran him. So, he does have a cup right here cuz he smacked onto the ground cuz my husky got loose and a cup will grab my husky >> cuz over at Swan Creek Park. >> Where's the dog at now? >> He's over in the hotel >> in the room. >> Yes, he is. >> Okay. >> It's a Siberian husky and he's pretty strong. And when he gets loose, he likes to ditch because he's from West Virginia. >> Okay. >> And when he gets loose, like I said, he ditches. >> Yeah, I know. They like to run. >> Have you guys done rounds around here? You guys have probably seen my husky outside. Yeah, our officers are through this a lot frequently. >> So you guys probably seen my husky outside. We we take him potty. >> Okay. >> And he's a beautiful boy. He is like he's all white and black all over him. But he fell at the Swan Creek Park and he did too. Him and him and the other one fell at Swan Creek Park trying to catch Alpha. He cracked his rib cuz he fell on the sidewave by a tree. >> Okay. He might have dislocated the shoulder blade, too. But that was just Was it yesterday? Yes, yesterday. But dude's been with us for 2 years. Actually, my boss, I can get him on the phone and tell you he willingly came cuz he wanted to drink on New York one day and didn't want to go back to his mom's. >> Okay. Well, why don't you have a seat of your car? Um, do me a favor. Just throw your keys up on the dashboard for now, just so we we can see. >> As they listened to her responses, one thing was obvious. She was too slimy to be caught by her own words. So, they had to figure out another way to catch her. >> Do you have any opposition to us looking at your room? >> What about my room? >> I'm just asking. Would you would you allow us to look at our at your room? >> I don't know if my dogs would. I don't have a case for >> my dogs. You got them? for >> I don't know if it's going to come down to it, but if their side of things if if they say that, you know, maybe go look at like something that would incline us to want to look in the room, would >> I ask what he's >> I'm just asking. Would you would you consent? >> Fine. I will put my dog's weight, but what what would you guys look for? >> Well, if he's saying that he was abducted or whatever he's saying over there, whatever you said. >> Abd. >> What' you say? >> Kidnapped. >> Kidnapped. There you How about that? I do not abduct anybody. I don't kidnap anybody either. >> Um, but if if he wasn't free to leave, then I was just wondering if you would have any issues with me looking in your room. >> What are you going to look for? A chair with duct tape on it? >> Possibly. >> There's nothing there. >> Seems crazy or things. Is there a chair with duct tape in there? >> No, I don't even The only chair I have, the hotel even gave me a chair. The only chair I have is a gaming chair I bought. >> Obviously, it it could go both ways. One, if there's a roll of duct tape on the floor, yeah, that could be a problem. But also, if I look in and there's nothing going on, then that would obviously indicate that maybe he wasn't traffic. So, I'm just saying it could help you and it could also hurt you. Can I ask you what? >> But it would completely be >> consensed, he wouldn't have been able to go to Speedway earlier to get coffee, >> right? If he was trapped, he wouldn't have been able to go to Speedway and get coffee. That big old cup of coffee he has in his corrupted pan, that's from there. >> Then Speedway Speedway themselves saw him willingly cuz we went in and got him willingly get back in my car earlier. Look, so we're we're just trying to sort through everything that they're saying and and what you're you're telling us. Okay. So, we don't know who's telling the truth or if maybe the truth is somewhere in the middle. I >> we don't know. And due to the the nature >> due to the due to the nature of the allegations that are being made, we're going to have a detective just come and try to try to help us sort through everything to make sure that >> what allegations are being made inducted >> potentially. Yeah, >> I did not abduct this boy. >> Here's the thing, though. This ain't the first time. This boy has lived with me multiple times. Concord up in Columbus or Newark, Ohio, which is close to Columbus. >> I'm sorry. >> He has lived with me. >> Hold on. He's live with me multiple times. On and off since 20 He lived with us over on South when we lived over on um Upton Avenue. He lived with us. >> You guys never had any interactions with the police prior to that prior today. >> Not with him. No. Oh, his grandmother did send a a safety check over to uh to make sure it was him because his mom told him to and they came and talked to him at the house. >> Okay. >> They did a walker thing. >> At this point, they were certain she was hiding something as she kept stalling the search by telling some unsolicited stories. >> Really upset. >> Okay. >> And the boys got an argument with him >> and he didn't What is your relationship? Okay. >> Um, the boys got an argument with him and said they can he cannot be looking at me sexually like that because we're no longer thing. We're just friends. And they they get in a yelling fit like face to face with them with no violence. And I um there was no violence or anything like that. And when we were at the donation center, I got told that he went to Speedway. When I went up to Speedway, see what's wrong with him. He grabbed a a lady, just a random lady. Don't know who she is. He messaged her on his Facebook or whatever cuz he admitted to He's like, "I messaged my mom on this lady's Facebook. I want to leave." I said, "Okay." Well, he wouldn't give me the mom's address so I could drop him off some. He was like, "I'll figure a way there." He asked the lady, some random lady, if she could take them and she said she had to work. So, she bought him a coffee and donuts. She bought him coffee and donuts and he willingly got back in my car. So, we have seen it. We walked in there and stuff. He grabbed his car until he got back in my car. Like he was already asleep, but he would say if he really want to stay, but he willingly got back into my car. >> Okay. >> We were sitting at a pump and he walked out with me and him and said, we both went in there to see if he was okay. And he willingly grabbed his cup of coffee and his little pack of brown donuts and got in the car. He even held his water jug >> cuz he has a water jug and cuz he drinks a lot of water cuz he donates and he carried it just be a way to fill it up. I don't know why cuz our water's [ __ ] high. Well, sounds like your man had an alteration yesterday. Okay. >> You said they had an issue. What though? >> Yesterday? >> Yeah. >> Oh, that was today. >> That was today. >> Yes. >> Okay. So, a yelling today. >> It was a yelling altercation cuz he still has he has cuz he's my ex, he still has sexual dreams about and he likes to say it out loud that he has sexual dreams about me and it gets these two going. >> Gotcha. >> And they got into a yelling pit. But here's the thing that before we left that they got into it cuz he wouldn't wake up where I was trying to get him off for donation. He wouldn't wake up and then they all got in yelling pitch explained to them what kind of dream he has and I don't need to hear it. So, if you guys are all not getting along, why why are you inviting him over here? >> We come willingly. We We get along. >> I understand he comes willingly, but why are you inviting him if he causes issues? >> Because sometimes he doesn't. He's a good person. >> Okay. >> Gotcha. >> He's a good person. >> Yeah, he's a real good person. What that boy wants will say everything his mom wants to say. >> Just when they were done listening to all that she had to say, they decided it was time to search her room. >> How long you been living here for? >> I've been in here for like 4 months. He's been saying with the other people. >> Is there any bats in here? >> No, there's not. >> Bat like like a baseball bat or anything? >> No, there's not. You have to look everywhere. No, I didn't buy this. >> We keep the dogs moving. >> That's the only reason why we leave that there. Be careful the dogs get sick. Huh? >> Yeah, I can get you some. >> I'll get him. >> Oh my god. >> Hi, kitties. >> You see the other one? >> What? >> The other kitty? >> Yeah, he's he's like real quick. Yeah, they're very lovable. >> Oh [ __ ] >> Sorry. >> I don't see anything. >> There could be one. >> You see anything? I'm >> looking. >> What's the wheelchair for? >> I have no electrical gate. I can't walk more than a mile. See what our car breaks down. I use that. >> Okay. >> That is over nasty dirty. >> Okay, >> dude. I'm not >> Yeah, I'm not. >> All right. I think we're good. >> Yep. >> I didn't Oh my god. >> Even though they found no weapon in the room, they now knew deep down that the suspect was up to something, but had successfully covered it up. The next day, they decided to track down two of the suspects with hopes that they would confess to their crimes. >> Driver, open your car door. >> Go ahead and step out of the vehicle for us, please. Face away from us, please. >> That's Michael. >> Stop moving. Stop moving. Walk backwards towards the sound of our voice. Keep coming. Keep coming. I'm going to bring him over to you guys. Keep coming. Keep coming. Keep coming. >> Keep coming. Keep coming. Keep coming. Keep coming. Take a few steps to your left. >> Keep coming back. Thank you. Keep coming back. Do you have any weapons on you? >> Okay. Take a few more steps to your left for us. >> Few more. Few more. Stop. Go ahead. Go ahead and back up. Keep coming. Keep coming. Keep coming. Keep coming. Stop. >> Who else is in the car with you? >> Back up. [Music] You have any weapons or anything on you that's going to poke me or stick me? >> My pens, but they're usually right on my notebook. >> Just pens. You said >> I got my watch backwards. [Music] and stuff. >> What's that? >> He's writing our notebooks about our seizures before I miss him and stuff. >> Gotcha. >> Is that what you got? The Lord likes something that gives me seizures. >> All right, let's go back this way. >> Set for now. Yes sir. >> Back seat. >> Back right or back? >> Back right. >> We'll wait till he gets the car. I'm good with hands. >> Back feet. >> Stop and walk backwards. Keep coming. Keep coming. >> I got hands. >> Keep coming. >> Stop. Take a couple of steps to your left. Couple more. I'll tell you when to stop. Keep going. Keep going. Keep going. Keep going. Keep going. Keep going. Keep going. Keep going. Keep going. Stop. Go ahead and start walking backwards for me. Is there anyone else in the car? >> All right, keep walking. Keep coming. Keep coming. Keep coming. Keep coming. Stop. >> All six suspects later plead guilty to one count of kidnapping, three counts of felonious assault, and two counts of tampering with evidence. The judge set their bond at $200,000 each. Just as that man got help before the clock struck zero, a kidnapped woman held against her will in a plastic container was saved by cops. >> We were told that a lady tied up in the basement. >> There ain't nobody tied up in the basement. Can we look? >> No. >> She did what? >> Fire at least get her upright. >> I wasn't going I wasn't going to. On May the 2nd, 2023, Cleveland police responded to the residence of a man named Dante Rashawn after receiving reports that a missing woman was held in the basement. When they arrived, they initially intended to just question the homeowner, fully aware that the report could be nothing more than a vague suspicion because of his involvement with women in the past. But his reaction quickly confirmed that they were dealing with far more than just a hunch. >> Bro, you can't be here like this. >> You can't be here like this, bro. I'm just knocking on your door. >> I understand that. But you making you making me hot. >> What? >> You're making me hot. >> What does that mean? >> I'm about to come out. >> All right. Come on out. >> Apparently, this all started in front of >> Give me a few minutes to take a look. >> How you doing, sir? >> Y'all can't be out here like this. >> My name's Officer Robas. That's officer Oed. Just so you know, everything's recorded. >> Listen. >> Yes. >> Turn those cameras off, please. Well, what's what's going on? >> Can you please turn your cameras off? >> You have to give me a reason and I can't. [Applause] >> You guys are making my my spot hot. I work for you guys. Okay. Long story short, I work for you guys. Please get out of here. >> You guys are blowing the spot up. >> Who do you work for? >> I can't tell you that. Why? >> I cannot tell you that because I'm not allowed to tell you that. Okay. So, just understand that. >> Well, here. Go home. >> We have a call here, sir. Let me just tell you why we're here and then we'll leave. It could be nothing. I don't know. I don't know anything about you. >> All right. I'm just saying y'all can't be here. Y'all making my spot out. All right. >> Well, that doesn't make any that doesn't make any sense. >> Don't I I don't It don't even make sense to y'all. You hear me? So, what I need y'all to do is >> Hey, sorry. Can you come over this address for a minute? >> No, don't don't do that, bro. You long story short, I need y'all to leave. Make a phone call. >> Well, we're not going to leave that quickly and tell the camera what's going on. >> There's nothing ladies tied up in the basement. >> There ain't nobody tied up in the basement. Look. >> No. No. But >> why not? >> Because I say so. Um, >> it's so tied up down there. >> No. What's your name, buddy? >> I can't tell you that, bro. >> What do you mean you can't tell me that? >> This your truck? >> My dump truck? That's my company truck. >> That's right. It's in my Yeah. There's nothing going on with >> Is it in your name? >> No. >> Then why why don't you want to tell us where you at? >> I'm trying to tell you I am an confidential informant. That's all I have to say. You guys are bugging right now. You guys are >> No, that's not all you have to say. >> That's >> Who told you that? >> I I can't say nothing else. >> Well, if there's something down in the basement, we got >> Nobody in the basement. I just What I >> So why can't I look? >> Why do you Why do you >> all that stuff that went on in the past with those three girls, man? We got to take this seriously. >> What three girls? >> Gina the Jesus. >> I don't know them hoes. >> You know what I'm saying though? If we don't take this seriously about something going on, >> I'm about to give you my social security number. >> Oh yeah. We're not going in without >> Yeah. He can't do that. Tell him please not to do that. >> Do what? >> That's fine. That's fine. >> Sergeant, please tell him not. >> He's not going. >> Okay. I'm going to give you my social security number. >> I want you to run it. >> Okay. >> My going to come up clean. What's going on is you guys had a crack make a fossil claim. >> All right. >> Okay. >> Well, that's an answer. >> That's it. >> Well, then we still have to follow up on it. >> There's nothing going on, sir. >> All right. All right. But do you understand our point? >> I understand your point. You're actually >> If we just walk away and somebody actually is there, what are we going to do? >> Well, that's what you guys are going to have to do because I'm not letting you inside. >> Do you see where Do you see where the problem lies? >> No, there is no problem. >> We don't just write he said it's cool and we leave. >> Well, that's that's how it goes. Because if I don't >> No, that's not so What do you mean? Listen. >> So, they're not going to let us go. >> No, listen. >> So, either today, tomorrow, the next day, in the next 5 minutes, you're going to considerly have these problems. And if we have to tell Detective Smith and say, "Hey, do you think this guy would have a girl kite up in his basement?" >> He's going to say no. >> Is he? >> 100%. Bro, I just >> He's willing to risk his career for all that. >> You think I'm [ __ ] Oh my gosh. You're going to take a a his word over uh Detective Detective Smith's word, right? >> I haven't spoken to Detective Smith. >> Well, you're going to talk to him. Correct. >> Show me a bruise on her right now. Okay then. So it's not domestic. Stop saying domestic before y'all have these folks thinking she just beat and I'm holding the hostage. Say it's a miscommunication. That's what you supposed to say. >> Uh confrontation. It's not my house. I don't have the rights to give up nobody keys. Really? I'm going to walk off cuz I don't want to talk to y'all. >> That's not an option. >> It is an option. >> Are you holding me in contempt or you put me in handcuffs? >> We're conducting an investigation right now. >> The investigation is right there. >> Huh? No, it's with you as well. >> No, it's not. It it is. >> It's not. >> It is because both of you are involved. And when I got here and when I got here, you both you were yelling. I could hear you through the door. >> Correct. You're not walking away. >> Talking to my mother. >> You are not walking away. >> I'm going to go smoke. >> No, you're not. You're going back to the front. It's not an option. >> It's not an option. >> It's an investigation right now. You're >> So, are you putting me in handcuffs? Are you detaining me? >> I don't have to put handcuffs. >> Okay. So, you tell me. >> You are not free to leave. >> You tell me I can't walk away. If you're not detained, >> you are not free to leave. >> Under what? I know under what circumstances am I not a right to leave? If I just told y'all I'm going to go give my mother her keys, her neighbor her keys so he can have her keys so when she get here for whatever y'all going to do. Lock me up, tell me to walk off or whatever the case may be. I have the right to leave and walk off. No, you don't. >> You don't because we're conducting investigation. Where do you under where is this miscommunication coming from? >> You are not. >> Hey, man. You can get >> Why are you getting aggressive? >> Because you're getting aggressive. >> I'm not getting aggressive. You getting keys whatever you want to give them to, but you're not free to leave. >> Why am I not free to leave? >> Because you're detained. >> Okay. Why am I not in handcuff? >> You don't have to be in handcuffs to be detained, my dude. >> No, listen. >> Where did you go to law school, buddy? >> When did I go to law school? I didn't. >> Okay. >> I've been to jail multiple times to know my rights. >> Where'd you get your street from? >> Oh, where did you get your cuz you was a cop. You talking not walking away, man. >> Apparently, this street law stuff that you got misleading. >> You wasted. Hey, man. You ain't going to chill out, sit still. >> Why are y'all still here? My mother said she would let her get her stuff when she gets here. I have no control over that. >> I will not with your So, okay. So, are you detaining me or am I getting arrested? Not >> okay. So, you you got her statement. I just told you I'm not allowed to give up this key. Open that door. I'm not even allowed back in the house because the police has been called. This the second time >> my mother I called her off her phone that she said I took from her that's in her house. >> So you're saying that you took her phone? >> No, you just said that. >> No, I said what she said. >> You just took her phone. >> No, >> you just said you took her phone. >> No, I said what she said to y'all is I took her phone. >> You just took her phone. >> No. >> Yes, you did. >> Ly just said to me on body camera that I took her phone. >> No. No, I didn't. If you listen to what I said, I said whatever she told y'all. >> I am perfectly obviously you don't know you speak as you not even thinking before you speak my >> I really want to tell you what it really is. >> So >> So now >> this all could beated. You can let her get her belongings. >> I'm telling you my mother don't want me back in her house. So how the can I allow somebody else in somebody else house to get their belongings until they're not here? Okay. >> Okay. I hear you. >> So guess what? I don't have a phone. Don't have it on her in the house. It's all How about this? You get on the computer, get on there, and call the calm down. >> Realizing he had actually said those words and that there was no taking them back, he decided to pull a fast one on them. But what he didn't expect was their next move >> and talked to my mother. Y the Hyatt near the airport. >> No. What's her name? >> Valerie Mac. >> Valerie. What? >> Valerie Mac. >> Mac. >> Mac. Yes. And then therefore when she say >> huh >> yeah no I just changed what her name was. >> So when she get here and take over her key and open up her door and allow her to get her stuff that's when she can get her >> Other than that I'm not going to open up my mother door because she told me not to. >> So you're telling me that you are withholding her belongings? >> How am I withholding her belongings when I don't have no control over this property? Tell me that. >> Well, you have keys. That doesn't >> No, I don't. You got all the control right now. So, >> well, call cuz you got a key to the house. We saw you come out the door. >> All right. How about this? How about this? I'm going to go give the key to her neighbor. >> No. No. Come back over here. >> Oh, yeah. Cuz that's what my mother told me to do. >> All right. Come here, man. Go ahead. Put your hand behind. >> And I'm not giving up these keys. My mother gave them. >> Hold on to them. So, she Yeah, I don't care. Right now, your non-compliance is the reason why you didn't put a handcuffs. >> Not in compliance. >> I'm in compliance to what my mother told me to do. >> You're in compost request. >> Oh, wow. >> You got a seat and chill out. >> No, man. You've been >> put your feet in. >> All right. Right. >> All right, man. Go and cut the AC on for him. >> Just as they were placing him inside their vehicle, someone unexpectedly showed up. >> Are you living upstairs? >> Yeah. >> Huh? >> Yeah. >> You live upstairs? >> Yeah. >> With him? >> Yes. >> You're his mom? >> Yes. >> Okay. Hold on a second. >> All right. >> Is this your apartment? Yeah. >> Okay. Did you talk to him or did you tell him not to let him let her in the jail for longer than anybody else >> until I got here? Yeah. Cuz she ain't got to go. If he going to jail, she got to go and she can't sit here and wait for her life. >> At the moment, man, he's not under because >> Okay. Pretty heated, >> right? >> She's also established residency. >> How long has she been living? >> Hold on. How long How long have they been living here? >> They got here in April. in April. She confirms April. >> Okay. So, she's been living in your house at this. >> So, you don't have any rights to pick her up. >> Okay. Establish. >> She won't go. So, I >> Well, no, that's fine. That's fine. That's fine. But you can't keep her belongings in there. >> I'm going to keep her belongings. >> You just said that you told him to lock the door, right? >> Right. So, I >> That's not how that works, right? But that's not how that works. Your decision to keep her stuff. >> Okay. I'm going to get my keys. I'm pull her stuff out. >> You got her no problem with her getting her stuff then is what I'm getting at. >> Not all. >> Okay. So, let's start. Let's start with that. >> Okay. It's hot. I have that right though. >> It's hot. >> You not going to sit in my house. >> My brother. >> Okay. >> So, here's the other thing. What we're not going to do, we're not going to stand out here all day >> and do tit for tat arguments like little children. Okay? We're not going to do that. We're grown adults here. >> Right. >> All right. >> You called me off my job. >> I understand that. I understand that. folks have been working. >> And I understand it cuz this is this is emotional stuff. I mean, we're all hyped up when when you get, you know, family involved in things, right? It I understand. I know. I'm I've been through divorces. I get it. I understand that. So, I understand how that goes. But I can only tell you what legally you can and cannot do. At this point, she's been living in your in in your rented apartment, which I'm assuming you don't own. You rent it. >> Right. So therefore, in order to remove her, you would have to have an eviction notice. So if she wants to sit inside out of the heat, she legally can do that until her whoever gets here. The other side of that, now let me let me explain that. >> The other side of that, all right, >> the other side of that is we need to both behave, right? And I would not want to stay in a place where I'm not wanted. So if you can expedite getting your brother here and getting your stuff out, that probably would be a good idea. I'm not telling you you have to do that, okay? Cuz you have a legal right to be there. But being in a place in a situation that's not good is not going to help anybody because you're only putting both of yourselves into a situation where somebody may escalate and things may get worse. Okay? So, the smart thing to do would be to separate. Okay? But you can't make her leave. >> And I'm not trying to uh start nothing. I'm not trying to stay. I just want to wait for my brother. >> Okay. Okay. >> 5 hours. >> Yeah. Do you have any family or any people here? >> I know. I understand. Yes, ma'am. Go ahead. Ask whatever you >> She's willing to leave when it's convenient for her. >> Right. She's willing to leave when it's convenient for her. Therefore, I cannot make her. And I understand your side of the story because you were kind enough to let her come here and now we're having this problem and they're splitting up. I get it. I understand all of that. I understand your frustration. But I can only tell you what we can do. >> I mean, the two brothers sit in my house and >> at each other. I'm not trying to >> I mean Yeah. I feel some kind of way that you open. Well, then I guess you're just going to have to be a grown adult, keep your mouth shut, and just sit in the chair. >> None of that, >> ma'am. Come back over here. >> Allow her son to be abused. Like, come on now. >> I mean, see, right now, nobody's being an adult. And I understand cuz it's hard when emotions are high. It's extremely hard when you involve family and your children. I get it. I know. I'm a father. I've got three boys. I've been twice divorced. I've been through everything that you're going through now. I'm old enough, but this is the point in time where no matter what she says, you have to keep the mouth quiet. >> But see, what the problem is that they not going to be able to be together >> at that point. The most important thing was deescalating the situation by any means possible. And it did seem to be working until the suspect suddenly decided to go off the rails. >> Oh, that's obvious. >> When when whenever happens, if you don't go to hell, they're not going to be able to go. >> And that's the point I was I was making and I understand that. But but he controls his own life and his own actions. >> You're correct. >> She controls her own life and her own actions. >> So if she wants to run her mouth, he wants to run his mouth. You can't stop them and neither can I. The only thing I can do, >> right, >> is clean up the mess when they're done. Right. >> Correct. >> Those are their choices cuz they're grown adults. And that's the problem. I've already told you what the options are, >> right? So, we've got to figure out how to make this work to keep everybody, you know, safe and out of basically out of jail and and and uninjured. So, I'm willing to work. We're all willing to work and figure out how to make this work within the perimeters of what I can do. >> But it's very obvious that he he's not going to want to hear it anyway. >> Somebody to talk to me. >> Please talk to your sergeant that is talking to my mother as we speak right now. >> What did I tell you? He will come talk to you. >> It is when he is available to talk to you. Not when you want to talk to him. is when he's available and you keep acting this way is why you're in handcuffs. When you first came out of the door, you've been on 100% go mode and then you didn't really want to talk to us, started trying to walk away, had a hard time identifying you. That's not how an investigation works when we're here for what we believe was a domestic. >> You understand what I'm saying? Listen, you're done. It is on somebody else. Don't know about confrontation. >> You want you want out of the handcuffs, but then you're acting like this >> because I'm in handcuffs. I'm in this hot car. I got the air condition blasting. It's coming. >> It's not blasting for real. I don't want you. >> Hey, sit on this side. He keeps sitting on the side without the grate. But he will talk to you like I told you before. >> Let me out. >> Hey. Hey. >> No. No. No. No. No. >> Hey, let me get another one. Relax. >> No. Cuz now y'all playing with me. You taking my stuff. You taking my stuff and allowing her to use my stuff. >> You're allowing her to use my stuff. >> What are you talking about? What? >> I don't want her using now one of my charges, bro. Er, no. Cuz I in the tank. I'm getting locked up for some. She want to be petty, bro. No. Use your charger. Y'all want to help her out? Use your charger. >> I tell you her charge I gave to you the other day. >> I don't care. >> That's mine. >> So, did you hear that? That's why I tried to explain to you in the vehicle, but you refused to listen. Just like you've been the entire time we've been here. Your mother gave it to her, and you refuse to listen. I told you that before you start banging your head against the cage. You just don't want to listen, man. >> Are y'all locking me up? I want to go for a walk. I'm leaving >> right now, man. Bro, that's going to be completely >> Let me see your forehead. >> Look at me. I told your son that >> you gave her the charger and he refused to listen to me and he started to bang his head against the cage. >> I gave her that. >> I just want to go for a walk. I'm not being locked up right now. I don't want you acting up. >> Well, y'all just send me to a mental hospital. Go ahead and show you my mental side. Come on. >> You good, man? Hey, Mr. Brandon, what are you doing? What are you doing, man? >> Bro, I want to get out of this car. >> Hey, man. Calm down. You got to be calm for a little while. I can let you out. Okay, >> bro. I'm getting coach, bro. I don't want to be here. >> While he was still acting erratic, they transported him straight to the hospital. But the drama was far from over. >> I don't want no help. Don't want no help. I'm refusing help. I'm refusing help. Let's go. I refused it. Can we go now? Since I'm getting locked up for a m >> I'm refusing medical help. I don't want it. I don't want to sit down. I don't want to ask you. >> Okay. I still have the right to stand. I have the right to stand. >> I have the right to stand. >> Sit down. >> I have the right to stand. I don't want >> You don't have any rights right now. That's what being under arrest means. >> It means that you're That means that It means that you rights have been removed. >> Sit down. Sit down. Sit down and stay there. Who are you? Who are you? >> I'm I'm a nurse. That's Stop. Stop. >> Bro, you're choking me. Let go of my neck. Let go of my neck. >> Stop your neck. Stop. technically is >> and let go of my shoulder. I've been shot my shoulder and there's still a bullet in there. So, I would like to see if you release up off my shoulder like an adult. >> Released up off my shoulder. I don't want no medical help. >> When you learn to behave, >> man, I was behaving. >> Stop banging your head against my >> I'm good. I don't want to sit, bro. What you going to do? >> You can add felony obstruction to that. >> Stop. Stop. Stop. Stop. Okay. Stop. You locking me up, right? >> Stop. >> Stop. So y'all allow this. This is what we do. >> It's called felony obstruction. Stop. >> How am I obstructing? How? How? Cuz I told you I didn't want to sit. I refuse help. I don't want the medical help. >> Then all you have to do is comply and we will let you go. >> I said it. I I comply. I said I don't want no help soon as I came in here. So anything else is unrelevant. >> Hey, listen to me. >> Anything else is unrelevant. I don't want medical attention. I don't want medical attention. So since I'm being detained and getting locked up for some >> because I said I don't want >> So that's what you want to do. Let me just have a doctor come over. >> Oh. Oh, y'all can really take me to a mental hospital >> and then you can refuse. >> I I'll go to the mental hospital. I I'm mental. >> You said you want to do it. >> I'm mental. Y'all going to charge me with a felony, but I might as well go ahead and get my mental medication. So, I want my medical medic. >> What's your name? What's your name? >> I don't know. >> In the end, he was charged with simple battery, obstruction, and disorderly conduct. Up next is when deputies mistakenly took the life of a two-month-old. They meant to save. Please, I couldn't sleep on her. I'll try to resuscitate her. Please don't. Please don't leave. >> What? Blowing. I'm squeezing her. >> Can you come out here, please? It's not a good idea to let the baby. You're bobbing the baby's head around. Please don't do that. >> Get the baby. Get the baby. The baby's dead. >> On October the 25th, 2024, deputies of the Independence, Missouri Police Department responded to a 911 call from a woman later identified as Mariam Pike, reporting that her infant was not breathing after she had mistakenly slept on her. They hurried over to the scene, not knowing that they're about to be caught in a race against time. >> The bleeding. >> Yeah. Where is she a little bit from her mouth? >> All right. So sorry. >> 6 months. Please. I couldn't sleep on her. >> Okay. Look, you're going to you're going to go to the hospital 643. You've got control coming out. Maybe sit a little more forward. >> Baby's crying. Pull her head forward. >> Is there anything there? >> No. I have mouth to mouth. Don't die. She's good. She's good. Hold on. He's got to look. >> Okay. The back of this throat's a little red. [Music] >> Hey, Ro. >> Why is he bleeding? >> Hey, we need to take some deep breaths. Okay. >> Hey. Hey. Hey, >> ma'am. >> Hey, look. Look. Baby's here doing good. What's her name? >> What's her name? Little tiny baby. She fell asleep on it. [Applause] >> He's breathing. Got some blood coming out of his nose. >> A little bit more. I was looked inside. I didn't see an airway, but I couldn't tell if it was further. I'm not sure. So, >> hey, ma'am. >> Let's get him in the back. You got >> I got it. I got it. >> While the medics accompanied by some deputies took the infant away for further medical examination, they decided that it would be a good time to ask her some questions regarding what had transpired before their coming. >> I need you. >> We need you to stay here. We're going to do some things. Okay. >> Ma'am, let's get >> We got to talk to you. Okay. >> Let's get some information. All right. We'll get it from you. What's your name? >> Okay. Hold on. Ma'am, >> wait. >> They're not taking her away. They're helping her. We're going to get you to her. Okay. There is nothing you can do right now except talk to us. Okay. >> Do you have a camp back there? >> You got to stay still and talk to me. >> She was asleep in the woods. >> Yeah. >> Hey, come over here. The are you doing? >> There's nothing you can do. Let them do their thing and we're going to take this. >> Hey ma'am, you got to talk. Okay. What happened? >> After interrogating her, they decided to check out her sleeping spot in the woods. Somewhere along the line, they began to doubt the authenticity of her story. But before the doubt would settle in, she put up an act to dissuade such a line of thought. And for a moment, her antics seemed to be working. >> That little shack her little ram shackle cam. >> It's posted. So, I mean, hopefully they take this kid away from her. >> Nah, >> probably not. >> Living out here in a >> They'll call her and they'll do one of those sit down meeting things and call it day. >> Hey, look at me. Look at me. Look at me. Did you hit her in the face at all? In any way, like trying to trying to help her or anything like that. You accidentally struck her in the face. >> No. When I was trying to figure out >> We're just trying to keep her on this side of the road. >> From where? >> Her nose. her mouth. I'll try to resuscitate her. Please don't leave. Please don't leave. What? >> Boom. And I'm squeezing her. I'm shaking her. Trying to wake her up. >> She said she was shaking. >> Yes. >> Slightly shaking. Baby, >> listen. Listen. >> Okay. They're going to take her out. Make sure that she's healthy. Okay. >> She has to go to the hospital. >> I'm sorry. >> It's okay. It's okay. Listen, >> Mariah. Hey, Mariah. >> It is fine. What's important right now is your baby going to the hospital. Okay. >> Okay. Listen to me. >> Listen to my words. >> Hey, let go of this car cuz they're going to go towards your daughter. Okay. Let's let go of this car. >> Let's let go of this car, Mariah. We need to let go of this dude. >> We're fine. Stop. >> Right now, you need to pull your together for your daughter. >> I know you are. So, hey, we need to try to get a hold of your dad so that we can figure this out. What is your dad's name? [Music] >> If you can be somebody else, >> her eyes are she's tired. bad combined with postpartum combined with shock. >> The holy trinity. >> When it became clear to them that she wasn't ready to be cooperative, they decided to find another way to get the information that they needed. >> Yeah, Destiny is the kid's name. >> She was eventually placed under mental health observation while her baby was taken to a foster house for that night. A week later, deputies were dispatched to her residence, but this time around, they weren't responding to a call from her. Who is it? >> Police department. >> Okay. What do you want? >> Uh, we're just coming to check on uh your daughter, I believe. >> Fine. >> Okay. Well, until the division now says come check on her. >> Okay. >> Can we just see her real quick? That way we can get out of here. >> You have a warrant. >> Maria, we're not here. Nobody's in trouble. We just need to check on Destiny. >> This is ridiculous. For the record, you're being recorded. >> Okay. You're being recorded, too. We just need to see the kid >> cuz what they're doing is illegal. They're trying to take all my parental rights and I have full copy. I have the paperwork. You want to see the paperwork? >> Just need to see the kid >> just real quick. >> Okay. Don't jump in real quick. >> I'm already triggered. >> You can bring it right in. Okay. >> Thank you, >> honey. Can you just bring it right here? She's going to be staying here with her dad. >> Who's her dad? >> You're the father. >> Hello. >> Okay. >> Appreciate it. You guys got food and everything, diapers? >> Yes. Can I have badge numbers and names? >> They gave her their names and badge number and left, only to receive a call 5 days later from a social worker reporting the suspect and her partner and expressing very disturbing concerns. >> The baby is in the house. Um I I believe the parents are inside. >> Okay. >> They are not opening the door. They have mental health concerns. >> So what is what are you wanting from us? >> Um is there a way that like we could try to open the door? >> They just let two home app. >> I was sitting right there while she was out there >> and my son opened the door and and he shut the door >> on my baby. Yeah. I mean, unfortunately, >> um >> I'm not saying that they're making good decisions, but they're allowed to have who they see fit in their house. >> About a week ago, they actually um their baby got into our custody because I got >> mom ran out of the house because of the domestic violence. Um and mom kind of mentioned it, but then she pulled it back and she was downplaying it. Okay. >> And she was >> The baby still in your custody? >> No. So, we brought the baby back to them. >> After knocking several times without any response, they left the residence because they weren't sure anyone was in harm's way, and breaking into the house would be an infringement on their privacy. For the next 24 hours saw the deputies back at that residence again. This time, a woman who happened to be the child's grandmother had called, reporting that she was assaulted by the female suspect. Following the report, they went straight to the suspect's apartment, not quite sure whether they would get a response or not. >> Did you do something illegal? >> No. Okay. So, can we come and talk about what's going on? >> Uh, I accept your terms. What's up? >> Hi there. >> What's your name? >> Can you come out here, please? >> Please. >> I got her in the closet. I don't know what happened in the >> Are you okay? >> Are you hurt? >> Okay. Can we put the baby down? Come here and talk and figure out what's going on. >> While they were trying to talk her into coming out of the closet, they called for backup because of their previous encounters with her. >> Hang on. Can you stay right here, please? You going to give her the bait? Okay. [Music] [Applause] We just want to help out and we don't want that baby to get hurt. That's all we care about. Okay. We don't want that baby to get hurt. Do you want the baby to get hurt? That's okay. I don't speak sign language. I I caught the first one. I get the rest of it. >> Hey, Mitchell, does she speak or is it sign language only? Don't sound language. What can you tell us what she's saying? >> She writes some things down so I can talk to her sometimes. >> Are you able to understand what I say? Do you understand me? >> Yes or no? Do you understand me? She's >> not from this continent born. >> Does she understand what I'm saying though? You would know. I mean, does she understand you when you talk >> sometimes? I feel like we're having games, too. >> No, we have like communication skills that we have problems with, too. But we communicate. >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> That's not a good idea to do that with the baby. You're bobbling the baby's head around. >> Please don't do that. >> Yeah, I'm with you. Okay. Here comes that. >> Yep. I will go with her. You go the baby. Okay. >> Can just stop. >> Go. >> As she charged towards them with the knife, one of the officers fired shots in her direction. But that action was about to cost them the life of the one they desperately wanted to save. >> Uh 32 fired. Someone just I don't mean how they're in the apartment. >> Oh my god. >> Get the baby. Get the baby. Get the baby. The baby's kid. And the baby. What the [ __ ] >> Stay down. Stay down. >> I am. >> [ __ ] him up. Cut him up. >> I didn't do nothing. >> 135. The baby's dead. I need AMR immediately. >> What did I do? Just >> relax. God damn it. Give me that. Give me that. Give me here. Get her. Take the baby. Get the baby out. Get the baby out. >> And you killed baby. You baby, too. I remain myself. Okay. >> And you killed. You What the hell? >> And the baby. >> The backup finally arrived, but the situation was already at a point of no return. Get >> I didn't officer >> officer that officer her >> and the baby else to do with her. >> He her calm >> the baby son. >> Okay. Hey, we need to get the puss off her. She's going to uh stop >> puss off of me too cuz I didn't do nothing. >> Quiet. >> Get over here. Get the puss off. We're going to start CPR. Baby, >> what are you doing officer? >> Well, she's trying to stab me, guys. So, >> dude, >> you live. >> You good? You good? >> Yeah, I'm okay. All All I could see was the >> Shut the up. >> It's okay. All I could see was the knife. I didn't even see the anymore. >> Is Chad good? >> Okay. >> She passed on at the scene while her child passed away at the hospital after efforts to save her proved to be unsuccessful. Following extensive deliberation, it was determined that there was insufficient evidence to prove that the officer had used excessive force, and as a result, no criminal charges were filed against him. In yet another 11th hour rescue, officers whisked and abducted toddler to safety just by a hair's breath. >> Hi. >> Yeah, I got the child in the parking lot. >> What was that? >> You just keep saying my daddy. >> You don't know where your daddy's at. We're going to get you to your daddy. Okay. >> I know. I know. It was scary, wasn't it? On March the 1st, 2024, a young boy was asleep in a pickup truck while his dad stepped out to buy groceries at a nearby supermarket with the vehicle still on. While the boy's father was away, an unidentified felon stole the vehicle and fled the scene with the toddler inside.
