Megan Kellman had asked a Taco Bell employee to call the police after her car was rear ended by 53-year-old Jason Williams but what seems like a simple fender bender quickly turned into a nightmare when Williams stepped out of the vehicle approached Kellman and in a chilling act took her life before turning the weapon on himself as was later revealed Williams had been recently arrested on a weapons charge in Summit County and was out on bond he wasn't supposed to have access to any Firearms while awaiting trial but that restriction clearly didn't stop him from carrying out this horrific act how much have you had to drink tonight enough to be bad okay on March the 26th 20124 he had been arrested for drunk driving after officers spotted him swerving erratically on the road during a search of his vehicle they discovered a nearly empty bottle of Captain Morgan and a loaded Glock 30 pistol which he had allegedly stolen he was taken into custody for driving under the influence and improper handling of a firearm stop the car what are you doing put your hands on the wheel for me put your hands on the wheel on the wheel what are you doing sir you're driving the wrong way on a further defying law enforcement all right I'm going to run you through some tests okay to see if you're okay to continue driving 128 okay yeah I don't want to do that you don't want to do that no you're not going to do my tests no okay you're not going to let me check your eyes or anything like that okay is there a reason why I don't want to do that you don't want to do that nope but you don't have a reason why no okay are you okay yeah I'm good okay all right well based off my observations of your driving behavior my observations of your behavior standing right here M and your admission to drinking more than you should have yeah I'm going to place you under ARR if you're not going to do my tests sure if you're going to do my test it'll give you a chance to show me that you're not impaired yeah okay do you want to do the test no I don't want to okay turn around then okay okay turn your wrist for me just like this y easy does it have a seat right in here okay thank you I started into the chilling case of 42-year-old Melvin bilbro a psycho whose Twisted actions drove him to set his girlfriend a blaze in a horrifying cover up after taking her life you got somebody hit in the window third floor tell them tell them we'll talk in a second you're under arrest don't move you had that piece of paper that we talk to in your pocket with with the blood on it blood is that on August the 26th 2022 police officers were dispatched to a residential neighborhood after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting an apartment fire upon arrival officers and firefighters heard desperate screams coming from the apartment spurring them into action to save the individual trapped inside did you guys hear anybody yelling no yeah they said they hard they said she's up there they said they yelling I'm yelling that one I don't hear anything I tried running up there you couldn't get in oh you can't see you can't get up there it's but somebody's still in there they said they said someone's in there but yeah it's thick black can't see can't see we got somebody hitting the window third floor them them the window top corner on window on the third floor top right corner coming we're coming they're coming we're coming we're coming they're coming they're coming we got one up there he's in the window anything no we he's in the window right there in that window no no we don't we know we know they're going up and they going to get them but they couldn't get in because you can't see Panic note oh my [Applause] God two people in theg and that's their car a lady and a woman heads up there's supposed to be two people that live there and a possible dog but there might be two people dog probably there's two dogs over there there might be two in there so there's a male and a female should be there should be a male and a female up there tragically the officers were unable to rescue 43-year-old Shena Renee who they later discovered had suffered stab wounds raising suspicions that the fire had been a mere cover up for a possible homicide in the course of their investigation they uncovered blood stains on Shannon's boyfriend Melvin bill B bro on her clothing and shoes back at his apartment additionally they found shanon's dog soaked in the smell of smoke in B bro's unit yet he was nowhere to be found the officers quickly named Melvin Bilbo as the prime suspect and launched a man hunt to locate him a day later the police finally caught up with him hiding under an overpass we'll talk in a second you're under arrest don't move you guys yeah you want to grab him over there yep my left yep what's your name Melvin all right Melvin this yours all right well like I mentioned before um I guess like to talk about you being in the bridge a little bit how did you how' you end up there I was just there man seriously I got nervous as hell all I know moving on the left side of me mov on the right side of me so I was just sitting in the middle so I both sides I don't know what it was but I just wanted to move when I felt a little comfortable CU I told you I smoking really okay you quit qu a long ways away from North St Paul I guess under that brid first time it's a pretty decent walk I think and it was like a 10minute drive for us I usually job see that no no no I usually when I'm working out I job so I've been further than that how long were you on a trail for I have no idea I just Pace I don't count time I don't even count steps what time did you leave the apartment your apartment I don't even remember cuz uh I went right across the street I into jail start smoking we how come you didn't stay at the apartment when people were telling you that cuz I called I call I making phone calls so I let him like look what's going on I went back upstairs I went to the store came WR back but I was here you went to the store yeah what store uh holiday holiday did you buy anything cigarettes cigarettes okay and where'd you go after right back around the area what do you mean what area the street from my house you know yeah coming right back down I'm like you know want to go around you know everybody thought I went in the building and start so how come you weren't hanging out when the fire department and police department around cuz everybody else wases I me pretty much everybody that lives there was there I don't be at home I'm usually work for this guy yeah I understand that um you know I guess the the kind of question that I'm struggling with is that you've got a friend right probably a pretty good friend it sounds like that you have some sort of relationship with and um you realize that her apartment's on fire and then you just leave well like I said it's happened before so I'm thinking that's that's what it was you know she cook a couple pieces in the damn oven and they caught fire in here so okay and you didn't think to go check out her people were telling you there was a fire inside her Apartments I'm guessing it's probably flame sh I would dare for a roef you know what I'm saying I don't want you were there for no was outside when it came a bang on my door so why' you have surpris when we asked you or told you that there was a fire there I surprised at all I'm really struggling with with why you wouldn't stay I mean I I think the average person a reasonable person would have stayed in that situation if they're friends they're close friends um their apartment was on fire and probably something could have happened to them during the interrogation Bill bro attempted to weave a Web of Lies to try and escape the situation however the overwhelming evidence on covant is apartment made it clear that there was no way he could talk his way out of this one youd stay around because you're concerned right you want to be with your other friends and help them deal with it and vice versa okay so I'm struggling with why you chose to believe I want smoke that's why I I going to go smoke and just sit back and see what happens it's like you know I can't do nothing you know about it I'm going be way you know okay then we end up finding you and arresting you and you had that piece of paper that we talked about in your pocket with with the blood on it blood is that that's mine that's yours where's your cut at that blood right here told you I work with a corrugator at work where show me where the cut is on your knuckle yeah okay I work with the coronator if you ever familiar with that so that's what I mean there's a fair amount of blood there in that piece of paper so when we test the DNA on it it's going to be yours okay all right so I want to go back and let's just forget about the I know you said that that uh nobody saw you in the window I understand that we want to forget about that okay um that's really not super important here to be honest with you um we've got this other evidence that we already discussed okay and this other evidence is blood evidence um and like we talked about already blood is going to show belonging to a specific excuse me specific individual and that's going to be her blood the problem that we have is that you have her blood un clothing in your apartment with her dog that's going to have soot on it um and we're going to test that and we've got this woman in her apartment you see how that's a problem in the end he was taken to jail and charged with first-degree homicide second degree homicide and first degree Arsen next we turn to the heartbreaking case of 27-year-old Janet Garcia who took the life of her 4-year-old son and then dumped his body on the side of the road got some blood drops on your shoes you're not you're not lying we got there and um but we didn't he didn't I didn't wait enough for him to get checked out what's looking like what it's looking like right now is that we're going to need to stay with you until we find him on March the 27th 2024 deputies from Stow Mish County Sheriff's Department responded to an urgent missing person report the last signing of 4-year-old Ariel was at 7:00 a.m. in Everett Washington his grandparents growing increasingly frantic by the hour reported him missing by 400 p.m. under suspicious circumstances the initial investigation involved question in neighbors and checking nearby areas several witnesses reported seeing Ariel with his mother Janette earlier that day one neighbor mentioned seeing Janette and Ariel leave the house around 8:00 a.m. the deputies find Ariel's mother Janette at an alcohol rehab center in Seattle far from her ever at home her family has been concerned about her escalating and alcohol use and today those concerns seem tragically Justified as the interrogation began the deputies noticed a small but crucial detail that they immediately recognized as a potential sign of guilt you got some blood drops on your shoes janette's initial explanation exhibited classic signs of deception overly elaborate details and a narrative that didn't quite add up this is often an attempt to make a fabricated story seem more credible so my son fell this morning earlier oh no yeah but I was able to take him to the doctors and everything was okay I took him to with another lady so she can watch him for me cuz I was I wasn't staying at home I had problems going on with my parents and they didn't let me in the house so I um I was saying with another lady she was super sweet that's where my son fell and then but but we left so I was like okay you know um so I went to another lady's house and I told her if she could watch him for me I wanted to come get you know I wanted it to fully recover I'm an alcoholic so um I was like if you can watch him for me for 12 months that'd be amazing because I'm not talking to my mom and she's the one that has like just like a notorized paper saying that she has legal custody of them but I have legal custody of them she's not letting me see my older son so I'm a little that would be really hard yeah I'm a little bit upset about that one so I'm here now and everything's okay the mention of Alisa triggered a common tactic in interrogation pressing for specific details Liars often struggle with consistency when forced to elaborate on fabricated elements of their stories we want to make sure that he's safe and know where he is who's the friend that you left him with um I left him with another lady I don't have her information oh well that's that's not going to cut it we got to figure out where he's at where can you like tell me the location where somebody could go and check on him and make sure he's okay in um like CAC area Okay Seattle more specific I don't have address nothing who's the friend how do you know the person that how did you pick the person she's a long time friend that I know okay what's her name um ala that's all I know Alica bone Alica bone okay and you've known or anything okay but you've known her for a long time so how did you reach out to her so I reached out to her um because I I needed help how did you reach out to her um I found her number on my old Facebook but I no longer have a Facebook anymore there something you sign back into and no no you just deleted all I delete it all the time so yeah you found it today on your old Facebook and her name is Al ala bone Alica bone like b o n e mhm okay and she lives in the CAC area janette's lack of concrete plans regarding her son during her rehab stay revealed a potential disconnect from parental responsibility a red flag in cases like this so how do we find Alica I don't know can you describe to me how you got there from Providence so I just drove from there to Seattle and then that's it you drove from Providence to Seattle to alica's house yes okay um did you drive on the freeway or mhm okay um how how long did it take you to get there like 2 hours 2 hours and what car were you driving my car so just like 1 hour or so and what kind of car do you have um I have a Nissan okay where's that car now I don't have it with me okay so where's it at um I left it at her house and then I came over here on the bus okay seat mhm okay what um do you remember what exit you took I don't know so just to clarify you go from Everett to the hospital in Everett you get him checked out you drive to your friend in seax you leave the car there you leave him there and you take a bus from CAC down here mhm okay can that all happen today yeah so pretty expensive ticket get a c bus come down here no actually it was only like 30 bucks oh really yeah okay what's your first name again Janette the timeline questioning is a strategic move to expose inconsistencies the memory of true events tends to be more more stable than fabricated ones janette's responses painted a picture of confusion or perhaps even deception you're not you're not lying you have a longtime friend that you reach out to to leave your son with who you obviously care about I love him with all my and you're expressing how upset you are about what's going on between you and your mom and the custody of him and your older son M think that's so I know that you're not going to go leave your son with somebody and you don't know where he is is yeah no so you do know where he is no I know where he is I know where he's at tell me where he's at I don't have the address for him okay how can we find the address for I don't know did you put it in your phone no to get there okay Alica you know where your son is because you're a mom who loves her son very much and you didn't I'm not ala I'm Janette I'm sorry Janette yeah you took him somewhere and you're going to go back to him and you know where he is so tell me where he's at so we can make that he's okay or what's going on so he's not I mean he's there he's with her but he's tell me how to go check on him I can give you an address okay what's the address I don't know you have to write it down okay I can do that thank you when he fell where didd he get hurt just he on his head but he fell on the ground and he hurt himself heads are the worst yeah I'm just trying to find I don't even how old is your son he is five so I don't know if this is the right [Music] one and Seattle Washington so 57 57 01 yep 23 two I mean 232nd Avenue Seattle Washington where did you get that address from just now from the top of my head okay yeah okay so that's where you remember leaving him so yeah Alica that's your name 571 yeah 5701 okay perfect yeah okay alah mhm how do you spell that a l i c a okay um last name is b o n n b o n n yeah as the questioning continued Janette revealed a troubled history that added context to a current situation tell me about your alcoholism how long have you been dealing with that I've been drinking alcohol or if you don't mind telling me you don't have to I've been here this is like my third okay I've been here like this was like my third year here okay so I did 11 months in recovery because I've never I was never like an alcoholic I was more like of a drug user so I the only drug I ever used was yeah and I used it for roughly like five four to five years okay um I came to finally get clean on and off on and off right I I tried it one time and then years pass and then I do it again and then years pass sure so I'm here now um I did a full year recovery 11 months and then I did my second year like coming back and like you know doing the group and stuff like that so two years this is my third year clean I started drinking a lot because I was like okay I'm not a drinker I'm like I was you know I was a I was a so alcohol is okay so alcohol's fine I'm like it's a socialized thing that everybody does I'm going to go out I'm going to have dinner I'm going to do this well I drink to the point where I can drink a whole bottle of Just Like Liquor so I'm like that's now I'm an alcoholic gotta so I started to have all kinds of problems and then now I'm back here hoping I can get clean again I just well I'm glad you're in a space where you feel safe that you feel like that can work for you I hope it does yeah getting into janette's history serves dual purposes building Rapport and understanding potential motives substance often correlates with impulsive and destructive behavior however the deputy's questions about Ariel's supposed injury exposed serious inconsistencies in janette's account her inability to provide basic details raised serious concerns he jumped from the from the bed that we were sleeping onto the ground and then he just got blood on his head and so I had him take him to the doctor and so he's doing good okay okay how did what did he hit it on just on the ground okay how did it start bleeding just it's just started bleeding can you show me like what side of his head do you remember what side of his head it was um I don't remember exactly what side of the head it was but it's starting to rain a little bit yeah it is okay so you don't h what time did it occur today like early like at 10 11: 10 or 11 okay do you know what time it is now it's already 6 6:30 or about to be 700 so how long were you guys at the hospital we were only there for a little bit he I don't even think he got check we got there and um but we didn't he didn't I didn't wait enough for him to get checked out so so he didn't actually go back and get checked gotcha did you actually go inside and check him in MH okay and then did you tell him you were leaving or did you did okay you just said he's not going to be seen and left yeah okay and how is he acting he's okay yeah what happened to him when he fell nothing he just cried just cried mhm she was moved to the back of the squad car due to rain drizzling however her inability to provide consistent details about her son's injury was true memories have sensory and emotional components that false narratives often lack do you remember when you walked in like can you describe to me when you walked in what it looked like it just the hospital just the hospital okay but can you describe like when you walk in the door where was the check in in the front like the I walked in as soon as I walked in the front desk was checked in right there and I just I said my son had a be seene for something and then I just his name and everything okay you're going like this so you wrote it down or was that like a check-in thing or there was a check all but I think they checked me in no okay yeah so you didn't write anything on there okay have you been there before no no that was your first time that was my first time when you checked in the desk was it just an open desk or just an open Des was it behind a like a did they have like a glass wall or just an open desk okay was there a lot of people in there yeah that's why you didn't want to wait cuz it was too long do you think he needed stitches or anything no he's fine okay you didn't remember where his injury was mm-m is it front side back do you remember it's the side it was the side definitely one of the sides that you the front yeah okay front you're kind of pointing above the eyebrow okay being taken to the back of the squad car is a change in environment that can destabilize a suspect's composure janette's next question here might have been a subconscious reveal of guilty knowledge so if you guys don't like locate my son what's going to happen that's what we're working on at the moment why why do you think they won't be a to locate them I mean you got the address to where you you be because like I'm I don't know I'm just saying if you guys are not able to find him like what's what can happen what's looking like what it's looking like right now is that we're going to need to stay with you until we find him cuz it sounds like you said you know where he is you know where you left him right so it shouldn't be an issue right should be able to locate him okay so that's what we just need to stay with you until till we locate him because it's raining and it's cold and I'm shivering and we're going to be with with you I think for a little bit are you listening to me yeah we're going to be with you for a little bit would you mind we have a Precinct right at the road it's comfortable and dry that we can all sit in so we can chat um so we're all out of the rain would that be okay where is it it's right by the prrs yeah just on 179 yeah and then we can give you a ride back and all of that if that's okay can I can I get a coffee from here before we go we we got coffee there we have coffee yeah oh we got coffee coffee you can't grab that seat belt around your back side this this one and the only too when he travels I just got to put your purse on the front seat right there he's not going to get into it but we don't like we don't like bags where we can't see him and stuff thank you yeah wor rolls to make us go by then that way we can all be dry and comfortable and sit you can get some coffee welcome Hey I appreciate it absolutely with Janette facing the consequences of her contradictory statements the interrogation reached its final phase we ordered food earlier we have do you want some tacos and stuff do you want me to get you some water with them okay do you like ice in it or no no ice okay be right back so I think um Tanya detective Johnson had told you that you going to go to jail tonight okay um I want to take a picture of your hand cuz you had said you had hurt your nail or broke your nail or something so I want to get a good picture which one were you talking about do you remember um I don't remember it okay I'll just take a picture of a day after Janette was taken into into police custody Ariel's body was recovered several hours south of where he was last seen Janette was charged with First Agreement domestic with a weapon and aggravated domestic with the circumstance of a vulnerable victim following up is the disturbing case of 73-year-old Philip Snider who ended his wife's life and later disposed of her body in the Tennessee River hoping his crime would vanish with the current your story doesn't make a lot of sense you need to be truful okay so I feel so bad so why did you throw her into the room I didn't want her to I didn't I didn't want her to be cre here on January the 9th 2018 Brian Heiser made a report to Harville police his sister Roberta Snider was missing little did anyone know this seemingly routine missing person case would soon turn into a chilling tale of deception and after taking Brian's statement officers quickly set their sights on Roberto's husband Phil Snider they arrived at Phil's Home expecting a straightforward interview instead they were met with a story that would change multiple times over the course of their investigation you guys okay I'm okay yes okay my wife passed away she ched on on her slam she kept she'd been for quite a by year she wanted to go down one more time before she died she thought I she knew she was going to die so where's your wife now what happened to her they took her to a place where they create people okay and you don't know where that is either Phil initially informed the authorities that his spouse had passed away 3 days prior during their trip to Graceland he claimed that upon realizing she was dying he attempted to signal for medical assistance but he was told by responders that she would not survive and he took her remains to a crematorium this account poses several investigative challenges the absence of a precise location for the body and the involvement of unidentified emergency Personnel makes confirmation challenging investigators would typically seek to substantiate this narrative by examining travel documentation and reaching out to emergency services near graceand soon after their preliminary questioning law enforcement searched Phil's residents they examined Financial records and even inspected Roberto's handbag for evidence before ultimately sitting down with Phil for a second round of questioning you remember the checkers passing the checkers I think it was could have been Checkers maybe we're trying to find your wife you know Kenny Kenny's worried about where his mom is here is I've been a cop for 40 years I started in 1977 what I can tell you is that your story doesn't make a lot of sense so sir it's time for you to tell us what you haven't told us so far I haven't told I've told you everything I can tell and right now your wife is a missing person you say during the ongoing interrogation Phil's Behavior began to exhibit signs often associated with deception he deflected questions provided ambiguous answers and tried to steer the conversation these tactics are frequently observed in individuals attempting to conceal their culpability it's apparent that the investigators are skeptical of Phil's account of the events seeking additional insights they conducted another interview with Roberto's sibling during this conversation his brother mentioned a phone call with Roberto on New Year's Day after considering the information provided by Roberto's relatives the authorities decided to question Phil once more however in this subsequent interview Phil's narrative took an unexpected turn it was at that moment that it dawned on the cops that the they had been looking for had been with them all along you need to be truthful it's it's it's that time did you leave yes yes is that where her body is is it BRAC yes can we go down there and get it you I don't know where come on buddy I'm so sorry you guys I'm so sorry feel so bad but she was on the way down I'm going to admit that that's the reason that you didn't see me her on the videos because she was already so why did you throw her into the room I didn't want her to I didn't I didn't want her to be Premier I wanted it to be with nature during the interrogation Phil changed his account he now confess to disposing of his wife's body in the Tennessee River asserting that she had passed away during their Journey it is not uncommon for individuals to modify their stories when their initial falsehoods became unsustainable the revised story often incorporates elements that the person believes will correspond with the existing evidence the investigation took a tramatic turn when law enforcement introduced kadav dogs to determine if Phil was concealing any information he is looking at a red bin there's no body here but there's a very bad smell in this tote he came back to a three he came back to it three times during the house search theab dogs indicated the presence of human remains in a red container these specially trained dogs are capable of detecting the odor of decomposing human tissue their reaction to a red container provides compelling physical evidence that conflicts with Phil's previous accounts although no body was found inside laboratory analysis of the evidence revealed the traces of human blood in the container as the evidence accumulated Phil became the primary suspect leading investigators to conduct a formal interrogation I didn't cut the shirt I didn't cut any shirt off well the science says that's not true I carried her out of out of the house over your shoulder yeah dragg her no dad do you understand what's going on here where is Roberto in the Tennessee ribon and the floor of your truck looked like a constellation it was so bright you're guilty of something I'm not I didn't my wife the questioning became increasingly challenging for the investigators as Phil introduced a third variation of events in this version he claimed his wife succumbed to natural causes after which he wrapped her body in trash bags and discarded it in the Tennesse River repeatedly changing narratives often signals dishonesty with each new account typically incorporating elements the suspect believes align with the evidence gathered by law enforcement the officers grew more skeptical of Phil's later story due to luminol test that revealed blood traces in the vehicle they also informed Phil of his failed polygraph but he maintained his position with conventional interrogation methods Prov ineffective the investigators opted for an unconventional approach they recruited undercover officer Joan Bower to wear a wire establish a friendship with Phil gain his confidence and record any confession this strategy sometimes referred to as the Mr Big or Canadian technique is employed when standard questioning tactics have been exhausted it capitalizes on the human tendency to confide in others over time particularly when a trusting relationship has been formed did they have good coffee here really yeah I just got divorced in cety I got two grown kids I take care of her um in the afternoon then all night and she needs a break for me we have a f seat you do don't you don't get friendly with him oh really with with that guy there he's the one his life's missing somebody was telling me about that that's yeah they can't find the body so they can't charge do you think he did it he said he did and then he it's not well drive for an hour I'll drive for an hour okay so Phil what do you think of the donuts oh very very good Joan assumed a false identity and initiated contact with Phil at a local fast food restaurant their initial exchanges were casual and light but gradually evolved into more intimate conversation Joan and Phil began to meet on a regular basis with Joan going so far as to purchase Donuts fulfilled to celebrate his birthday this approach allowed Joan to slowly build rapport and trust with Phil over time what I did first was I said the paramedics and [Music] memph she wait minut oh Okay I lied to right so they figured it out yeah so but they since I lied to them they spent all that time searching for her like you said as long as they don't have the body they can't they can't tell what do you think they're going to find it though no cuz I don't think she's in the Tennessee room no what do you think she is I don't know I'm to know I didn't do anything she come on she so what do you think I hit her in the head with a hammer or I could if I got mad enough but I didn't do that I said what do you do with that trash yeah you said take it to the dump oh you put her in the dumpster that's a scenario I know but okay oh then she's buried 10 ft deep in garbage now so you think I W did you if you roll your mom over in bed and she's asleep yeah you push your head down yeah and she yeah she smokes you aren't working for the heart police are you are you kidding me no yes there was a little bit of blood but it was on the plom they didn't find and then the lamp had this is scenario mhm this is all scenario right the lamp that she was looking on had some specks on it that I noticed you got rid of the lamp said put it in there and the Fly wood was in the back of the truck put it in there that's the reason the dog didn't find it I want you to come back tomorrow so I'm not going to tell you any no say there's a marriage of convenience then somebody gets interesting bizarre it's just an idea I had had enough it was a pretty good argument the night before yeah but I didn't kill actually I kind of did yeah kind of kind of yeah did you feel any guilt in a way kind of but I didn't tell anybody anything can you imagine a hammer this big in this B around like a mallet yeah 2 lb okay just scar right say I bonked her in the head right and her tongue came scenario right I put a bag over her head and put it in a rubber M scenario right contain put it in the back of the truck and a separate one than you put her separate okay as a relationship developed Phil gradually disclosed more information to Joan about his wife's disappearance he presented various hypothetical scenarios describing her death including one involving a hammer and placing her body in a plastic container such what if scenarios of could include details that only the perpetrator would possess investigators typically compare these specifics with physical evidence they've collected such as injury patterns on a recovered body or trace evidence found in the home or vehicle the situation intensified when Phil suggested he and Joan relocate to Cincinnati together Jones seized this moment to press for the truth making their move conditional on Phil's honesty finally Phil revealed that he smothered robera with a cloth while she was sleeping then struck her with a hammer he admitted to covering her head placing her her body in a plastic container and discarding it on route to Tennessee this confession obtained through an undercover operation provided Vital Information about the method and Body Disposal the mention of a hammer correlated with Phil's earlier hypothetical scenario adding credibility to his admission after numerous one-on-one meetings Joan finally gathered sufficient information to justify an arrest coming up on hky gory King Step Up you're kidding right L of games are over all right Phil you have the right to remain silent anything you say Canon will be used against you in court in the end Phil Snider pleaded guilty to and was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison next we uncover the case of 37-year-old Tony Peralta who after 15 years of harboring a dark secret finally confessed to take the life of his landlord his guilt had weighed on him for so long that he could no longer bear to live with it and I because give me no money and I Buri him in his house I confess I don't want to live live life anymore without on May the 1st 2023 the Roswell Police Department in New Mexico received an unexpected call Tony perala a 37-year-old local man borrowed a phone to confess to a he claimed to have committed nearly 15 years ago the victim his former landlord William Bill bloodette had mysteriously disappeared in December 2008 responding officers found perala emotional and intoxicated despite his condition he insisted on turning himself in this is a long time ago is what he say I'm just trying to cover you up you try to cover it up yeah okay tired of living with my life sir the guilt hell yeah yeah go ahead would you show me where it's at what if I took you would you be willing to show me where it's at do I have to go there right now well that will we know where the the house is okay I'll let you finish your your thing let's go okay you don't want to finish it you're good there yeah watching anyways all right just hang on okay the police took him into custody and transported him to the station for further questioning as detectives prepared to interview Peralta they couldn't help but Wonder was this a genuine confession to a cold case or something else entirely the interrogation began with Tony Peralta visibly intoxicated and emotional his sudden confession to a years old caught the officers off guard prompting them to tread carefully you know I speak I told you my name why' you asking I'm just trying to start a conversation man okay my name Tony Tony yeah I back I'm sorry I've been drinking you've been drinking yeah okay it's my understanding you called us the crib hell yeah you want those off [Music] yeah so you called us but it's kind of mix messages you had handcuffs in I you okay um you here are you making do do you feel like you're able to leave if you if you want it or do you want to be here hell yeah I confess to okay how much have youed today a lot a lot yeah wa when you find his body do it'll make feel better Z's house that'll make you feel better hell yeah okay I don't want to live with this shame anymore okay I understand that all right well um understand you're you're willing to Jesus yeah my understanding you're willing to take us to the house yeah yeah did it happen at the house it did it did I was I was on really bad okay and I because he didn't give me no money and I buried him in his house in his house do you remember his name his name was Bill name was Bill everybody talks about it all the time okay how long AG go I don't know you don't know too long too long don't don't no that you don't have to okay all right Tony well tell you what give me a sec going to go go for a car riding you want to do that as the questioning continued Peralta's story showed signs of inconsistency experienced detectives May recognize these discrepancies as potential indicators of deception or memory Distortion due to time and substance to to his yeah yeah let's go now before do this you understand if when we do find this body you better find his body it should be right there okay hey I confess man mhm I confess I don't want to live live life anymore without confessing okay just for good measure like you say you brought you got brought here and handcuff I know I know you called us I know you want to do this because it's it's a strain on yourself I I just want to make it clear that I'm not going to be that person yeah I I mean I want to make this perfectly clear that you're telling us it's it's good on you for doing it but it it'd be my job I would have to prosecute this when we discover this you understand that right so I'm I'm I'm going to go ahead and advise your rights just cuz it's kind of the state I don't you don't have to tell me my rights I know I'm [ __ ] I don't even care if I go to jail forever or get to jail I should have never sand and that's it oh man I got you but just just let me get through this it's something that's it's something on my end that they want me to do okay so okay you have the right to remain silent anything you say can and will be can and will be used against you in the court of law you have the right to an attorney to the attorney present before any questioning and during any questioning if you can't afford to hire an attorney one will be provided for you and it cost to you and if you choose to answer any questions or make any statements you're free to stop anytime okay you understand all that yeah I know you said you drank a little bit hey I wanted to right I understand all right cool all right so we're going to go get in a car we'll drive you to it you show me I'm will he turn on the air conditioner so hot in here we're going to go downstairs we're going to get in a car and I'm going to turn that AC up I hate it up here all right well let's go cuz anyway when press about the victim and crime scene Peralta's responses became increasingly vague this lack of specific details is a common characteristic in false confessions where the Confessor May struggle to provide accurate information Tony yeah here's the deal brother we need some more details all right what do you want to be able to prove it okay so let's start at the beginning okay what year do you think this was I don't remember how old do you think you were I don't remember what does the victim look like or what did don't remember what do you mean you don't know I don't remember I just know that I why do you know that because I know that I kept it a secret okay why did you keep it a secret cuz I didn't get how long you been keeping a secret for a long time like how long years maybe yeah you see how all your answers are I don't know that's what we're having a hard time with well I said I did it yeah but we need a lot more detail than that in order to get the full picture of it right and if this person's in here and has been for a long time they got a family right yeah yeah so the family's probably missing them okay they probably deserve answers on what happened right yeah so you want give him that I was high and I didn't okay what were you high on smoke it or I how much did you use a day a lot a lot are you still using no sir no that's probably why I'm confessing so why what was the reason that I don't I have a reason you didn't have a reason so were you guys arguing no I just felt stupid one day I guess you just felt dumb what was he doing when you being a good man was he sitting sleeping standing reading watching TV I don't remember you don't remember but you him in a tub no that's what you said earlier I didn't say that earlier what' you say I said that was it no you said in the bathroom and it's tell how' you you said that how' you I said that was it no you didn't told me how earlier well he's right there well we're got to go see if he's in there good but how' you I how did you no did you hit him with the bat how'd you I don't remember did you st I don't remember you did earlier I did earlier you're just repeating the things that I'm saying now you see how I don't believe you if I just came to you and I just said it all the time I don't know I don't remember would you believe anything I'm saying he said Hey sir what's the law that inside I don't know you think you trust me that's why I'm having a hard time trusting you I know I said person in the house yeah we're going to go try and find them okay but I don't have the details on where he's at I told you where he was at where's he at inside the house I don't know huh the interrogators detecting potential deception shifted their approach they employed a classic technique to designed to assess the veracity of baral's claims by challenging his commitment to the story where did you burying on the side house right there okay what part the part right there yeah yeah but what part of that room the left side the left side yeah if you dig in if you pull the board up and dig them up okay on on the left side of the building yeah so that's towards the courthouse yes okay which way is his head poined I don't know which way are his feet point I don't know how is he laying in there he's just how deep is he buried not very far not very far no are we talking like inches yep or like feet inches inches yep you'll find him you think he decayed hell yeah how long you think it's been too damn long too damn long yes sir what was he wearing I don't remember was he wearing clothes yes or did you bury him naked I buried him with cloes with cl he have shoes on I don't remember did he wear glasses I don't remember what what type of person was he white was he Hispanic uh I think it was what black I don't know you don't know what he was and you don't know his last name no sir how old do you think he was old like how old I don't know like if you had to guess how old are you old uh 37 is he older than you yeah how old your parents my friend how old would they be I don't know you don't know over 50 I don't know anything okay are you under the influence of anything right now yeah I'm drinking aloh you've been drinking yeah you want to wait and talk to us once you're sober uh yeah can you take me to the police station or what no we're going to leave you here for right now what do you mean cuz we got to do this so you're going to stay here okay if we find something then obviously we'll have more to talk about all right cool but we need details to start working on this so if you can already gave you every single detail right but there's a lot of I don't know so I'm saying if you start to remember those things let somebody know all right okay first thing okay okay otherwise you're going to stay here for a little while okay okay and if this is a lie you're going to be charged with false reporting okay okay a new officer Gino took over the interrogation his change in demeanor was a calculated move aimed at building Rapport and potentially lowering Peralta's psychological defenses do you like onions I got them cuz I hate on I didn't I know how some people are you either hate them or you love them have you been here for a little while at the police department mhm my name is Gino by the way they they just called me in yes me too you too sir is that good is it hamburger good it's McDonald's but is what it is right so they um they already read you your Miranda Rights you're aware of all that stuff I'm going to I'm going to let you know again okay something I we had to do but um you have the right to remain silent anything you say can abuse against you in the court of law you have the right to talk to a lawyer and have her her present him or her present with you before during questioning and if you cannot afford to hire one we'll be pointed rep you no expense all right you understand all that okay what time did you call the police department yeah yeah okay tell me what happened man I somebody a long time ago okay all what happened I don't know sir i' I've been told his name is Bill uh but it's really William right I don't know you were living with him at the time okay back then um you guys had some kind of issue was it about a wallet no do you remember what what happened why why I just remember I just needed to confess that was it okay how did you do it do you not remember or you just don't want to say it I just don't want to talk anymore okay okay well it's off your shoulders now man you're welcome Gino is probing let out to provide crucial information about the weapon in True Confessions such specific details often emerge as a subject's guilt compels them to unburden themselves you know I wasn't I wasn't around back then 2009 so you know my own curiosity is you know I I want to I want to know you know I can read the reports from from back then and that's why I said the wallet thing cuz that's what we were told I know he was an older guy I know that you were living with him right you guys were roommates he owned the place right but he would he allowed you to stay there like you were kind of renting did you pay him money to live there or I don't remember he just okay but you guys were living together all right so what happened man do I look familiar to you uh-huh no you look real familiar to me I feel like we maybe I've just seen you around town did you use a I okay how about this one why don't why don't you tell me why you decided to come for because my heart hurts okay he been eating at you for a while yeah okay I know this is probably the a a big hard decision you had to make you been thinking about it for a while they been in that position but I can imagine how hard that decision was to to step up and at least nobody does have to worry anymore yeah I mean I can imagine his family you know he he was an older guy but you know his family never knew what happened and that's kind of that's kind of where I stand because I want to be able to to tell them you know what happened tell them that he was a good man andless she did what I did you know okay yeah it was his son is the one that reported it to us back then about not being able to get a hold of his dad why didn't anybody say anything after that why did everybody just let him Slide the conversation took an emotional turn as Peralta explained his motivation for confessing his words painted a picture of a man tormented by his past but was it genuine remorse or a calculated performance genuine remorse can manifest itself in various ways and trained interrogators look for physiological and verbal cues to authenticate such claims what do you mean okay the cops talk to you back then I assume mhm yeah give me a little details Tony what happened do I have to speak or what no you don't have to man I'm just talking to you you don't have to tell me anything you don't you don't I just I just want to know the story I'm sure the family wants to know the story you know things he was he was always good to me and I took his life for no reason and I don't have excused what did you a lot of people have an excuse I don't have one what did you use to I don't remember do you remember if it was some type of weapon or your hands I don't remember all I know is that I buried him and I should one of the officers told me that you had said it was some type of sharp object maybe like a knife or a screwdriver or something okay and again you you don't talk to me but please don't lie cuz there's no reason to lie anymore right with the screw driver okay and is that screwdriver around anywhere no okay cuz it's been I mean I know it's been a long time yeah you got family in town here yeah that's why he wanted to confess they don't you know nothing Happ to him it was my fault for my S you know nobody else should suffering except this your parents still around no no okay so no reason all right in the final moments Peralta made a statement that significantly impacted the case investigators knew that such last minute Revelations can either corroborate the confession or expose its falsehood I kind of went back there and looked at it in the area there's some crossmembers on the floor were those there when when you put them in there no okay so it was just an open space at the time I don't remember you don't remember it was in what like cross numbers you know like if you were to pull up the floor there's like Joes like braces uhhuh you know what I'm talking about like Deco diagonal that the floor sits on no those weren't there I don't remember okay did did you have to let me say this did you have to dismember his body to get him in there or did you just put him in their hole I don't remembered anyways already confessed man no well see I'm I want I I need to know this information because I'm going to go and dig them up all right and dig up no no no we we went over there and looked at it we haven't even got started yet that's that's a are they going to take me to jail it's a process I don't know man I don't know we have to talk to the district attorney's office some be stuck here all night or what no not all night no no but we got to talk to the Das there're they're the ones that ultimately make the decision but those cross members you know like there's no there would be no way to put him in the ground without dismembering them that that's my just my curiosity is what I'm facing all right is there anything that that you think I should know that you want to tell me before I take off everybody knows everything all right okay I'll come back in a little bit Tony and let you know what's going to happen Okay Okay despite his confession detectives initially doubted Tony peral's Story suspecting he might be fabricating details however after verifying his claims they confirmed his involvement and arrest him Peralta was charged with first agreement for the 2008 of his landlord in 2023 he was sentenced to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty
