Get away. >> Tell where no get. >> Officers are meant to protect lives. But what happens when the very people sworn to safeguard the public end up taking a life? And even more disturbingly, they seem to do it for fun. I think she went up on the hood, hit the windshield, then when he hit the brakes, flew off the car. But she is. [laughter] >> No, it's a regular person. >> Here are some incidents when body cams exposed evil cops for fun. Starting off with a crazy incident where an everyday patrol turned dead as officers were forced to take a quick judgment call as they confronted 26-year-old Albert Odum at a parking lot. Hey, let me let me see your hands, partner. >> Hey. Hey. Hey. >> What do you got? Hey. >> On May the 7th, 2018, Tulsa police officers Chris Bea and Shauna Hickeyi were patrolling the extended [music] stayin parking lot, a known hot spot for narcotics activity and violence. They spotted a group of men sitting in a parked van and moved in to investigate. Hey, how you doing, sir? I'm >> all right. >> You stay out here. >> I'm just dropping him off. >> Hey, let me let me see your hands, partner. >> Tension spiked the moment the officer confronted 26-year-old Albert Odum. Because this wasn't just any officer. This was a cop who was dangerously trigger-happy, and it showed within seconds. >> Hey. Hey, >> what do you got? >> Hey, >> William 236, hold traffic fired. 8,500 East 41st Street, EXTENDED STAY. GET ON THE [screaming] GROUND. >> GET ON THE GROUND. >> HEADS. LET ME SEE YOUR HANDS RIGHT NOW. HOLD ON. HEY, PARTNER. DON'T MOVE. DON'T MOVE. HE'S STILL GOT in his hand. Don't move. Hickey, back off. BACK OFF. HEY, DON'T MOVE. THE EXCHANGE OF gunfire ended badly for Albert Odum. It was already wanted on active felony warrants. The confrontation underscored the split-second decisions officers faced in high-risk environments. Up next is another victim, Janabi Kandula, a 23-year-old college student whose tragic case exposed the shocking lack of empathy shown by a pair of Seattle officers. $11,000. She was 26 anyway. She had limited value. On January the 23rd, 2023 in Seattle, Officer Kevin Dave was responding to a possible overdose call. But on his way to the scene, he was about to be involved in a shocking and completely unexpected incident, and one that would reveal the kind of monster he was behind the badge. 3 Mary 2 started supervisor start fire for a struck pedestrian. Is it the same location, sir? >> Negative. I'm going to be on Aurora. >> Officer Kevin Dave struck 23-year-old college student Janabi Kandulla as she was crossing the street. And shockingly, he showed no visible panic or remorse. Soon after, officer Dan Odira, vice president of the Seattle Police Officers Guild, arrived to assess the scene. >> All right, brother. Well, yep. Um, I'm sure uh TCIS is. And I Oh, he's good. He says, "Well, normally we don't give voluntary statements." And I said, "Hey, you're going to have to decide if you wanted to give a statement or not, but it does not seem like there's a criminal investigation going on. Otherwise, there would be other What's that? Yeah, otherwise there might be other people arriving. Correct. >> It was safe to say that the response from both officers was infuriating. But what happened next is something even more heartbreaking. >> Yeah. I mean, he's going 50. That's not out of control. That's not reckless for a train driver. >> Yeah. Lights and seconds. Yeah. Yeah. Well, there's some the initially uh he said she was in a crosswalk. Uh there's a witness that says no, she wasn't. But that witness could be different because I don't think she was thrown 40 ft either. Uh I think she went up on the hood, hit the windshield, then when he hit the brakes, flew off the car. But she is >> [laughter] >> No, it's a regular person. Yeah. Yeah. Just write a check. Just $11,000. She was 26 anyway. She had limited value. The lack of empathy displayed by officer Dan Odira was jaw-dropping, but the dark truth didn't stay hidden for long. After the body cam footage surfaced and public outrage erupted, Seattle police announced that Odira had been reassigned to a non-administrative role. If that incident wasn't crazy enough, we have another example of cops turning hostile by turning a routine welfare check on 19-year-old Win Rosario's house into a fullblown life-threatening encounter. >> Whoa, whoa, whoa. No, no, no. SEL, GET AWAY. ON March the 27th, 2024, 19-year-old Wyn Rosario called 911 during a mental health crisis at his family's apartment in Ozone Park, Queens, asking for help. Two NYPD officers identified as Salvatoria [music] Longi and Matthew Chi and Froco arrived within minutes and were met at the door by Wind's 17-year-old brother. [snorts] >> What's up, man? >> Did you call? >> Not my brother. >> Brother? >> Yeah. >> On who? himself. >> Hold on himself. What's [music] going on, bro? >> Um, he's having an episode. >> What kind of episode? >> Um, like >> is he a bipolar skitso? Like >> no, like he just >> kind of episodes. Yeah. >> Basically like he was just going crazy. Like he don't he don't even know what he's doing to be honest. Like >> How old is your brother? >> He's 19. >> How old are you? >> I'm 17. >> Where's your dad? >> He's not home. He's at work. >> So who I speak to on the phone? >> I think it was my mom. No, I spoke to a guy. >> He called on himself. >> Yeah. >> The officers entered the small apartment and confronted Wyn, who was standing beside his mother. What started as a call for help shifted from calm questioning to something dangerously extreme within moments. >> I don't. >> Is he diagnosing anything? >> Uh, I'm not sure. >> All right. Oh, you told him second floor. Hello. >> What's up, pal? >> Anybody else in the house? >> Yo yo. Whoa. Whoa. WHOA. GO. HIM AND BACK UP. LET GO OF HIM. Please don't mother. >> Why not? Tell him to get the [ __ ] out of the way. >> GET OUT OF THE WAY. >> MISS, but don't give me another call over here real quick. >> Miss, get away. Get away. >> Get out of the way. >> Get out of the way. >> Get out of the way. >> Get out of the way. Get her out of the way. >> I'm so sorry. >> Get her out of the way now. No. No. S get. >> In those frantic seconds, the officers had multiple opportunities to slow the situation down or reposition. but instead they chose the most extreme option. So far, aside from a departmental investigation, no criminal charges have been filed. However, the Rosario family has sued the city in a wrongful death lawsuit and continues to demand both the firing and prosecution of the officers involved. Those officers were forced to take an extreme step. The next case shows how a pair of Las Vegas cops were caught completely offguard during a routine patrol and one of them chose to use a firearm when a taser could have easily done the job. >> Hiccups. Hiccups. Hiccups. >> On July the 27th, 2019, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police responded to the 2200 block of Cascade Street after a body was found nearby. But as officers canvased the area, they had no idea what was about to unfold in the next moment. Damn, it's the police. >> Here he comes. Here he comes. Here he comes. Here he comes. Here he comes. >> Okay, >> that's good. >> The encounter ended quickly when officers failed to use the catch pole to restrain the dog and instead resorted to their firearm. The family criticized the police response and indicated they may pursue legal action once the internal review is complete. Here's a shocking case where a burst of chaos by an officer ended with three shots to the back of 28-year-old Shalem Tindle. >> What happened? WHERE WHERE [screaming] >> on January the 3rd, 2018, BART police officer Joseph Mateu was dealing with the evader near the West Oakland BART station when an unexpected commotion erupted. a white female 123 97 out of Arizona. >> What happened? >> Where where where call 33 got shot by the west open fired. Moments later, a frantic BART officer sprinted toward the sound of gunfire outside the station, only to find 28-year-old Shelene Tindle locked in a desperate struggle with another man. >> Chester, something gesture. LET ME SEE YOUR HANDS. LET ME SEE YOUR HANDS NOW. BOTH OF YOU. BOTH OF YOU, LET ME SEE YOUR HANDS. AMID THE CHAOS, Officer Mateu jumped in to break up what looked like a fight for control of a But he did it in the most bizarre and extreme way imaginable. >> LET ME SEE YOUR HANDS. LET ME SEE YOUR HANDS. >> Let me SEE YOUR HANDS. >> LET ME SEE YOUR HANDS NOW. >> 28-YEAR-OLD Shelene Tindle did not survive the incident. Tindle's family filed a lawsuit that led to a jury finding excessive force and awarding millions in damages. No criminal charges were filed against Matteo as prosecutors deemed his actions reasonable under the circumstances. Moving on to another case of officers using excessive force. A routine traffic stop turned violent unnecessarily as the evil [music] officers clearly overstepped their limits. >> I can't I can't I can't I can't offic. On the 1st of July 2023, [music] two officers were on a routine patrol when they suddenly spotted a Ford Edge with a warrant on the driver. They followed the car into a parking [music] lot. However, instead of confronting the seemingly cooperative man, they did something more. >> What's up, man? All right. Come on. Hey, come here, man. >> I'm doing this. I'm doing this. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please. Please sir, the [ __ ] ground. >> Please, sir. Please, sir. On the ground. >> Please, sir. Please. Put your hands BEHIND YOUR BACK. >> PLEASE, SIR. PLEASE, SIR. PLEASE, SIR. PLEASE, SIR. Please don't do this to me, man. My son in the car. Please officer. >> It's almost ironic that the officers are telling him to put his hands behind his back when they are literally holding his hands down. The situation is already chaotic. However, this was only the start of it. >> I can't, man. I can't. I can't. I can't. I can't. Officer. Oh my god. Put your hands behind your back. >> Oh my god. >> Hands behind your back. >> Keep it down. Stop. Resist. Let go of your hand. Let go of your hand. >> I got a hand here. >> Okay. >> He's still pulling on me. I don't want to fight. >> Stop. Stop. Put your hands behind your back. >> I just want to talk to you, >> dude. Put your hands there, >> put your hand behind your back, >> dude. I'm going to hit you again, bro. Dude, >> hands behind your back. Behind your back. >> Put your feet back. >> I can't breathe. >> I can't breathe. >> I got breathe. I got asthma. I can't breathe. I can't breathe. Officer, I can't breathe. I can't breathe. >> Stop it. >> Even though the man is clearly letting the officers know that he isn't able [music] to breathe, they just continue without a care in the world. >> I can't. I'm sorry. I was just >> Let me see, please. Officer, I got you. I just want to see that. [music] >> Supervis. >> I just want to see that one. >> Stay right here. [music] >> Stay right there. >> You got uh 32 to supervisor. >> I got supervis. >> I got to go to the hospital. I'm overdose. I'm overdos. Please. You'll >> be all right. I'm not stay safe. >> Oh my god. Please stay here. >> Having a hard time breathing because of the onslaught he had just been through. The man starts panicking. >> I can't, man. >> Just relax. >> I got a lot going on, man. >> I want to die. Just kill me. >> No. >> No. >> No. >> Stop, dude. >> Stay right here. >> No. No. >> No. No, no, [cheering] no. [music] >> Search him. >> Go ahead. Stand up, man. >> Stand up. >> Stand up. >> Stand up. Put your feet under you. >> Stand up. >> Stand up. >> Jordan. Hey, >> Jordan. Get up. >> Get up, dude. >> Stand up, dude. >> They're going to lift up on your arm. Beat your feet up under [singing] there. Stay up. >> What makes this even more disturbing [music] is that the man's one-year-old son was in the car watching everything unfold. kid. Okay. >> Car hasn't been searched. I don't know if >> he's got a bunch of warrants. If you still carry [music] 159 with a gun, [music] >> I bet there is. He's got warrants for it, >> too. [music] What is it? >> Stop. >> Well, your tag's expired, man. You got a bunch of warrants. >> So, if you just listened to us, none of this would have happened. >> None of this would have happened, man. >> I was trying to talk to you. >> Yeah, I bet you were, man. >> I was trying to fight you. I didn't >> That's ridiculous, man. >> I had a hard time. >> You're going to be a rape truck. >> We're going to work with you, man. that this was all. >> It's almost comedic hearing the officers say that the man wasn't being [music] cooperative when they quite literally got out of their car and beat him up. >> I didn't do nothing. >> I'm not trying to be do nothing wrong. >> Are you ready to go? >> Are you going to stand up now or what? >> I was just scared. >> I don't care if you're scared. >> Y So, listen, man. It's all over with. All right. Let's have you take a stand up. Okay. >> All right. >> Let's go. It's all right. Swing your feet under. Get up. >> Let's get your shooters back on. >> Oh my god. >> Outside your mouth. Anything else? >> Keep him away. >> Come on. Stand up. Come on, dude. >> I told you, man. >> You didn't swallow any drugs, did you? >> No, sir. >> Man, it's all over. As of today, an investigation [music] into the two officers behavior has been ongoing. However, no one has been charged with anything yet. Here's another incident where an ever impulsive officer let his emotions get out of control as a misunderstanding resulted in tragedy for 26-year-old Daniel Shaver. >> We are going to consider that a threat and we are going to deal with it and you may not survive it. Do you understand me? >> Yes, sir. >> I SAID KEEP YOUR LEGS CROSSED. >> I'm sorry. Hands up in the air. >> You do that again, we'reing you. DO YOU UNDERSTAND? >> PLEASE DO NOT SHOOT. >> On January the 18th, 2016, Mesa police responded to reports of someone pointing a rifle out of a hotel window, later identified as a pellet gun used for pest control. Officers assembled in the fifth floor hallway and confronted 26-year-old Daniel Shaver and a woman in an intense encounter. STOP RIGHT THERE. STOP. STOP. GET DOWN ON THE GROUND. BOTH OF YOU LAY DOWN ON THE GROUND. LAY DOWN ON THE GROUND. >> YES. >> Who else is in the room? Okay. Since apparently we have a failure for you to comprehend simple instructions, I'm going to go over some of them again. Okay. Can you both hear and understand me? >> Yes. >> All right. If you make a mistake, another mistake, there's a very severe possibility you're go both going to get. You understand that? >> Yes. >> And you? >> Yes. >> All right. >> What? >> This is Shut up. >> I'm not here to be tactful diplomatic with you. You listen. You obey. >> For one thing, did I tell you to move, young man? >> Did I tell you to? >> No, sir. >> Put both your hands. Put both your hands on the top of your head and interlace your fingers. Take your feet and cross your left foot over your right foot. Who else is in the room? >> Nobody. The supervising officer, Philip Railsford, delivered a barrage of complicated high pressure commands. Instead of calming the situation, the officer's tone only escalated the tension, something that would prove devastating just moments later. No. >> No. >> All right. So, you're not going to have any problems understanding anything that I tell you, right? Great. >> All right. >> Can I go to read? >> No, you're not going to do anything but come towards us. >> Young man, you are not to move. You're to put your eyes down and look down at the carpet. You're to keep your fingers interlaced behind your head. You are to keep your feet crossed. If you move, we are going to consider that a threat. and we are going to deal with it and you may not survive it. Do you understand me? >> Yes, sir. >> Young lady, shut up and listen. All right. You are to keep your feet crossed. Take both of your hands, put them flat in front of you. You are to push yourself up to a kneeling position. Kneeling position. Now, put both your hands in the air. Okay. Crawl towards us. >> Okay. Stop. Come. Grab a pole. >> No. Rich. Pull. >> Pull this way. >> Pull. >> Let me know when you're clear. Clear. >> No, you're not clear. press [music] and we'll be done. >> Okay, when you're done with that, lay her flat. >> Okay, I need one more cup. Okay, this is the deal. We're going to do almost like we did before. Okay, see. Okay, young man, listen to my instructions and do not make a mistake. You are to keep your legs crossed. Do you understand me? >> You are to put both of your hands palm down straight out in front of you. Push yourself up to a kneeling position. >> I SAID KEEP YOUR LEGS CROSSED. >> I'm sorry. >> Shaver, visibly terrified, tried desperately to follow the instructions, but impulsive officer Braillesford left no room for error. In the very next moment, everything flipped upside down as the situation vaulted from tense to extreme in an instant. >> CONVERSATION hand up in the air. >> You do that again. We're you. DO YOU UNDERSTAND? >> PLEASE DO NOT ME. >> Then listen to my instructions. >> I'm trying TO DO WHAT YOU >> DON'T TALK. LISTEN. HANDS STRAIGHT UP in the air. Do not put your hands down for any reason. You think you're going to fall, YOU BETTER FALL IN YOUR FACE. YOUR HANDS GO back into THE SMALL. YOUR BACK ARE DOWN. WE ARE GOING TO SHOOT. Do you understand me? >> Yes sir. >> Crawl towards me. >> CRAWL TOWARDS ME SIR. >> DON'T get up. Okay. Hold on him. One with me. Daniel Shaver did not survive his injuries. Officer Philip Braillesford was charged with seconddegree homicide, but he was ultimately acquitted after jurors accepted his claim that he believed Shaver was reaching for a firearm.
