it's called the mother lode but you essentially take the amethyst Trail to um the first of the Peaks and then you you scale all Four Peaks into section in succession and then head back down the other side this is my fourth time there Brent and I earlier last year did rim to rim to rim in the Grand Canyon in one day I think in 2022 I may have hiked more than 250 days like I hike every day you know just around town and then occasionally do longer stuff but it's definitely within most people's capabilities what happened that day really was the weather we were pretty prepared I I'm actually proud of how much we did prepare and plan we were ready for 20 to 30 scattered showers we're not ready for Non-Stop rain you drill down to the hourly forecast and it showed two hours of I think it said like 30 or 40 percent chance we thought that meant light rain maybe it even blows over and passes by we decided uh we talked about it decided to bring you know light jackets or rain jackets and didn't think much of it but that weather came as expected or as forecasted and it didn't it never let up very wet very cold when it started raining at 10 30 it was definitely not on I mean we were all like oh wow this is yeah this is too early for this as soon as the water entered the picture it got dangerous it's to the level where I think people do bring ropes up there um you don't need ropes the idea of down climbing it wasn't wasn't feasible at least for I mean called to speak for myself wasn't feasible for me it's kind of like a one-way door like once we got past that and then the weather didn't improve it actually worsened our options from that point were no longer to turn backwards to then down climb the technical areas that we just got through seemed impossible we knew it took us two hours to drive there and then it took us six or seven hours to hike to where we were and we're looking at the sun's going to go down in four hours and so as we were talking about it we're like you know if we call for help now and they send a helicopter it's going to take them a while but let's give them plenty of time to get to US during daylight part of our conversation with one another is like how much is this going to cost us and like I can't believe we're going to be on the news like you know we're one of these tourists that they always talk about the dispatcher sort of takes the information and says you know tells us like stay put we've got your coordinates we're coming our job now is to stay put and wait and you know hopefully they'll be here before Sunset so this is still like one you know two o'clock in the afternoon they can't get the helicopter they told us the visibility was way too low so they're dispatching people on foot and as soon as they said that I mean I was like I don't think we're gonna make it I mean when I thought other people were gonna have to do what we just did and we couldn't do it we actually had doubts that another night we would survive the temps that night did drop down to 33 there was some light snow um didn't stick but uh yeah it was it was extremely frigid the space blanket I think is the differentiator from hypothermia or not I've since bought 25 of them they were my stocking stuffer during Christmas so everybody has one now all through the night when nobody got to us we just could not figure out like what why did they say they're so close and they couldn't get to us and then we learned a lot at like one o'clock the next afternoon when we got to the Pinal County team we found out after the fact that in fact expert climbers with ropes from Maricopa County Sheriff had made it up to the top of Brown's Peak at about midnight we waited till 11. we figured out how to at least make it back to the top and then about an hour and a half later we came across to Orange helmets all right so you know how to put on a harness are you familiar with them they climbed halfway up and put ropes on us and got us down the rest of the way yeah so it's two teams we learned at that time that they introduced themselves as teams four and five from Pinal County and then I think the other one is called Tonto Rim or Gila County I realized you know oh that probably means you're the backup yeah there's like three teams that couldn't get teeth their phones all rang at one or two in the morning and of course at that point I didn't even know that surgeon rescue was all volunteer um you know so then I started realizing these were just volunteers who were laying in bed and had their phones ringed they grabbed their GO bags and started driving I don't know what that downtime would have looked like with no ropes or harnesses they had like like Sawyer said water and food jackets extra jackets extra socks beef jerky yeah beef jerky I think I had a homemade um granola bar that somebody's wife made that morning glad we will get you guys and we're gonna get you guys out of here is there any sign of the weather letting up no because if so yeah we would definitely like a helicopter ride out of here ourselves but everybody was very positive I think that was we were joking with each other a little bit like oh yeah we're going to be those idiots that get rescued but they were there was no shame there was no criticism they were excited to find us they didn't have to be there we got back to the car I mean there might have been a hundred emergency vehicles two you know shade tents a bonfire McDonald's burritos were there like sheriffs from four counties they were just a completely diverse group of people many of which are either still have a full-time job with family or are retired and this is just what they do you know in their retirement because they care about it and even the groups from different counties all knew each other they had all been in similar events and trainings I mean they were there was a lot of shared experience and they all clearly had made it into a lifestyle it was overwhelming emotionally to be rescued by such a large group of people and realize how many attempts were made and how far people were coming I'm sure there are a lot of people that that we never even saw that were um that were helping it's just selfless I mean those people these people you all are just completely selfless I mean there's no way to say thank you enough
