we've got a car being tracked on cameras
let's figure out why you can see the
first hint there crossing the
orange left side fog line with their
tires
this is in the north metro
north of 694 if you're from outside
minnesota that'd be the north east metro
you're kind of heading into
more of the northern suburbs or exurbs
heading out into lino lakes forest lakes
area and a lot of
bedroom communities if you take this and
you keep going further north you go into
i-35
which takes you up to duluth and lake
superior i would imagine several calls
about this call into the state patrol
911 center and they're really struggling
to maintain their lane position when
this originally went out over the radio
they said that the car was
driving in the ditch or and you can see
they're pretty close to driving in the
ditch or
really spending a lot of time
drifting off the left side of the lane
then drifting right and kicking up a lot
of dust on that shoulder maybe they're
getting yeah you can see getting onto
that soft shoulder there where they're
into the gravel a little bit
state patrol working to catch up on this
driver this is during daytime hours
obviously this was part of this was
before noon or right around the noon
hour
in september 2021 like so many of these
videos it's
a little unsettling to watch i can let
you know
this one has a pretty good ending as far
as these things go but let's take a look
hard to watch some of this sometimes
they get so close to those high tension
median cable barriers we've seen time
and time again these barriers which are
very cost effective
relatively easy to repair
doing amazing things in terms of
preventing cars from
crossing that median things are not
always as they appear
like you i assumed this was a dui driver
who was driving during the day i thought
this was a drunk driver
spoiler alert
and it's tough to watch
when they drive off the road like that
but in this instance i believe it was a
medical issue no sobriety testing is
done if it is a medical issue or if it's
a diabetic issue again not positive not
saying it is but this does happen
sometimes in minnesota
a driver who is insulin dependent is
required to submit a doctor's statement
regarding their ability to drive safely
within 30 days of diagnosis of course
the vast majority of individuals and
americans with diabetes are perfectly
fine drivers
and you know when a trooper is pulling
out like that they mean
business
there they are closing that gap they're
going to pick their spot to pull this
car over in this case they want to get
them stopped pretty much right away
they've got a pretty good shoulder there
on either side of the road so what
happens in this situation if state
patrol decides it's not a criminal issue
it's not a drunk driver
they can refer this individual for
what's called a driver evaluation
this is an option that not just troopers
or police have but in minnesota any
civilian can refer another driver
based on a medical condition for
evaluation that's called a driver
evaluation lots of states they all do
everything slightly differently but most
states are going to have a parallel or
similar process some type of medical or
driver
reevaluation referral that you can
submit to
the agency that issues driver's licenses
in your state
one last thing there is a rare condition
called hypoglycemia unawareness
hypoglycemia unawareness i think it
deserves more awareness we all can do
our part to raise awareness about it
which means blow sugars can hit you
suddenly very abruptly out of the blue
please i'd be interested to hear
anyone's stories like share comment and
get the word out
