On April 29th, 2024, officers responded
to a call of a battery between two
neighbors with the victim being 68 years
old.
>> What's going on?
>> Guess you guys are the other part. Was
it over here? The orange jeep.
>> It was No, it was over there.
>> This one. Okay. All right. You [snorts]
guys sit tight for me for just a second.
>> No, no, no. That's okay. I just saw them
on the phone and I figured they were
probably going to be the other people.
So, I wanted to make sure they knew that
I didn't want them going inside the
house or anything until I got a chance
to figure out what was going on.
>> I mean, they don't listen.
>> Well, here. Let me let me get a little
closer to you, ma'am. I can't hear you.
>> Huh?
>> I couldn't hear you. Let me get closer
to you. Hi. My name's Officer Smith.
Ma'am, how are you?
>> Oh, fine.
>> Okay. You hurt anywhere?
>> I see you got some soda and stuff.
>> Well, let me show you.
>> Let me before you let me before you
move, I want to take say you got some
soda and everything on your face.
>> You hit me real hard in the face here.
With the can of soda
>> with the soda can.
>> Yep.
>> Okay. Let me ask you this. Do you want
to press charges for
>> I'm about ready to
>> Well, I mean I I need to know.
>> I want to show you the can that she
literally came right up to my door and
she said I says she said
>> I see the soda.
>> You know you're a
>> Okay.
>> And I go, "What the hell? That's her can
smashed in my face. Went all over my car
over me."
>> Okay.
Where were you? Where were you at
whenever?
>> I was sitting in my car. I
>> like Were you driving?
>> Well, I was coming back from north of
town
>> from So, you made the right on there and
then coming this way. Okay.
>> And I was coming down this way and one
was with the bike out there. Another
kid, little kid in the thing. And the
kid with the bike,
you know, start looked like he was going
to make a turn to go back in. He didn't
turn. He just kind of circled around.
And they do this all the time. Uh there
was a little kid last year. I mean he
was this little on one of these little
tight bike things and see how all of our
driveways go downhill.
>> Yes, ma'am.
>> He had a car. They had a car parked on
that side. I came around the side. Thank
god I keep looking all the time for
those kids. That little kid went on off
the driveway on that little bike went
zoo across into the other person's
driveway on their side.
>> Okay. So it came from their driveway and
kind of went and you were driving along.
Yeah. And I stopped one time
>> and told told the kids, I says,
>> "Please don't be out on the highway." I
said, "I'm scared you're going to get
run over." And just [snorts] like I told
this lady now, I went to my mailbox,
came back, and that's she met me out
here.
>> And she said, "You know, you're
and I go, you should not have your kids
on the road. Do you want them to?" And
then what was the other thing she said?
I was just I was just furious. I mean,
and then uh I said I said, "Oh, that's
what the sidewalk is for." I said,
"Everybody else uses the sidewalk with
their kids."
>> Why are you in the road letting your
kids in the road?
>> I mean, I don't get it.
>> Okay. So,
>> I mean, I'm I'm just
>> Just so I recap so I understand. So,
you're coming down the street, kid rides
his bike in front of your car.
>> I never know when. And then so you
rolled down your window and you yelled
out like, "Hey, get your kids out of the
road."
>> Yeah. I says, "You need to get your kids
out of the road or they're going to get
run over."
>> Okay. And she was still in her garage,
right?
>> I didn't even know she was there. I
thought it was just a husband.
>> Okay. So, you yelled out to the husband.
Yeah. And then you What' he say in
response?
>> He didn't say nothing. And I thought the
lady I actually thought that was one of
their kids. She's so young. I think
she's got four or five kids of her own.
>> Sure. So then you came on down here to
go to the mailbox.
>> I went to my mailbox.
She met me way over there.
>> Then she walked down there.
>> Oh yeah. Yeah. She walked down
>> and then she called you a [ __ ]
>> Put this can on. She goes you know
you're a
>> And you said
>> and I said you can't let your kids be
out on the street. I said they are going
to get run over.
>> Okay.
>> And then she called me another and I
called her a
>> Okay. And then she struck you in the
face with the soda can.
>> Yeah. She just went
>> Okay. Did she throw it or did she hit
you with it?
>> No. She literally came up from my window
and smashed it into the side of my face.
>> Okay. And what do you want done?
>> What do you think I should do? We have
trouble with them all the time.
>> I can't I can't speak to that. I you
know, but I can tell you that if it's
something that's got you pretty fired up
now.
>> The only thing I can really do is offer
you is if you want to be the victim of a
battery charge, cuz that's what it
equates to,
>> you can be the victim on it and then we
you can press charges against her for
battery. That's that's what I have to
offer you. Now, understand that that
might cause further riff in the
neighborhood, but
>> God knows what else they're Did you know
I mean the male person, the other people
on the street, they've all said already
to them about watch your kids in the
street. Well, [clears throat]
>> watch this. And and yet they can they
never are in their backyard ever.
>> They only use the front to do play ball,
do anything. Mhm.
>> The one day the one little kid came over
with the dad and the dad seemed to be
nice.
>> He tried to help my daughter.
>> I'm just making sure. I'm checking to
make sure my partner's not sitting down
there so I can communicate. So I can see
him taking off.
>> Oh no, my partner. I just want to make
sure cuz they're all coming here and see
my car a couple houses down. Yeah, I saw
I was like, "Oh man, I I don't I bet you
cuz they're all out there. They're on
the phone and she seemed animated." I
like, "Well, let me make sure she
doesn't go hide in the house."
>> She smashed it in my face. I said, "I'm
calling the cops." And she said, "Go
ahead.
Hi folks. Hi.
>> I'm Officer Smith, my partner, Officer
Salama. I guess some stuff happened,
huh?
>> Yeah.
>> All right. Well, how you doing, sir?
>> Good.
>> So, what can you guys tell me about what
happened today? [clears throat]
>> So, my son was
>> talk to her first.
>> Well, I mean, I could talk to you guys
together if you'd like. I mean, it's
it's fine. at the same time.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. Okay.
>> So, my son was riding his bike and you
know, they're all kind of at the age
where it's I'm trying to teach him you
stay on the side. You stay on the side.
Stay on the side. My one son that's
inside was currently riding in the
middle of the road. So, I stepped out
and I like get off, get out in the
middle of the road, get out the middle
of the road. He kind of started going to
the side. So, that's when she had
stopped. And this this hasn't this also
hasn't been the first incident. My
daughter, she's been videoing them as
she's driving by, stopping stopping
right here in front of our house. She
wants to take videos and
>> for whatever reason, she's been videoing
outside. She's like, "Where's your mom
at?"
>> Yeah. Where's your mom at? Even if I'm
like in the garage. She's, "Where's your
mom?" She's stopped and taking videos.
So, this has kind of been going on for a
while. And so, she stops right in front
of my son where he was, my
seven-year-old who's inside lays on her
horn, sits there for a while. I just
kind of sit back. I told my son to go
inside. I'm like, "Okay, let's just go
inside."
>> Mhm. Then I stayed out with these two.
And then I saw her just sitting right
there. And I had just walked to about up
about about to there behind.
>> When you say to there, I I can't see
>> about where that second car is. The
second police car is.
>> Okay.
>> And I was trying to figure out where she
lived because I didn't know cuz I also
have a situation going on with my
ex-husband where I I know if it's
somebody that knows him, maybe he's got
him videoing or what's going on. I'm
like, "Does she even live in the
neighborhood?"
>> So, you didn't recognize her from living
two doors?
>> I had no idea if she even lived in the
neighborhood. And he said, I I heard him
say, I think she's checking her mail,
which is when I saw her coming back and
we kind of met and I had just kind of
stopped next to the car and I said, you
know,
>> still next to at that point. So,
>> a little maybe
>> like by the red car up there kind of by
the mailboxes or
>> uh No, probably by that trash can, would
you say? Maybe. Or
>> so at the corner almost. Uh, not quite.
No, but probably like part of that trash
can right there.
>> It's a trash can. It's between the
police cars and that gold car.
>> Yeah.
>> Okay.
>> So, I stopped there. I'm like, you know,
what's your problem? She's like, you
know, I've seen these kids out. They're
going to get hit by a car. I've I have
videos of them on my phone. I've been
videoing them. They're not on the side
where they should be. You know, you're
privileged. And used a couple words that
not going [clears throat] to say. And
then she, well, didn't get to that point
yet, but she's like, you know, you're I
don't know if you're
>> a boyfriend back there. And then she's
like, all your kids are white trash. I
don't know if there's six or seven of
them, especially the little blonde ones,
white trash. He's always in the middle
of the road.
>> Very friendly at all.
>> And I says, "You're not going to call my
four-year-old white trash." And she's
like, and then at that point, she kind
of started opening her door like she was
going to get out and she's like, "I'm
gonna
Oh, by the way, you're a you're a that's
what you want." And that's my drink. And
then I started kind of going back to my
house and I started kind of motioning
him to come over.
>> Okay. Well, so she's got some pretty
good swelling and bruising to the side
of her face.
>> Um,
>> she already had that. So her her account
is similar but a little different like
you know and that's that's where I'm at
right I I'm here for a moment in time.
Um she stated that
>> she has some swelling here. She has
>> well yeah so this is so definitely she
got hit in the face with the soda can
and that that force that was used was
good enough to where her face is
>> jumped it on her and then I tossed it.
>> Well, so the way she states it that it
was kind of like taken and then smashed
in her face. is cuz I was already
walking.
>> There's there's sod all over her.
There's sod all over inside of the car.
And like I said, her cheek where she
said that she was struck is already
swollen and it's actually it's
discolored. It looks like it's just in
the time that I was talking to her, it
was getting worse. [clears throat] Um,
>> at that point like I thought she was I
thought we were like I thought we were
getting into a fullon
>> I thought she was getting out to fight
me.
>> So you were concerned that the lady with
the walker was going to fight you?
>> She was in her car sitting in her car.
Never seen her out with a walker. She
got that out. I've actually never
>> All right, guys. So, here's the deal.
>> She wants to press charges. Okay.
>> Okay.
>> So, what it boils down to, it's a
felony.
Okay. Uh, essentially what it comes down
to is she's 68 years old. So, the state
looks at her as being a protected party,
which enhances the charge. So, you do
have to come with me. What's going to
happen is we're going to take you back
to the Waterl Police Department. We're
going to get some information. We're
going to take some pictures of you and
then you're going to go over to the
county. You'll be placed on a 48 hour
investigative hold pending charges. The
state's attorney is going to review it
and make a determination on what to do.
My hands are tight.
>> Okay? I want you to understand like I
see you guys all the time. All right? I
know how this looks. Unfortunately,
though, this is what it has to be.
>> Okay? I don't want to do anything in
front of your kids or anything where
they can see,
>> but we there's there's going to be
handcuffs involved.
>> Okay.
>> So, do you have everything that you want
to make sure, you know, maybe take off
jewelry cuz all that stuff you're not
going to be able to take with you?
>> So, when would I be able to bond her
out? There is no bond
>> at at this moment. Correct. There's no
bond yet because she hasn't been
formally charged. So, once the state's
attorney looks at the case, if they
decide there's there's three ways this
can go. One, they don't decide not to
charge her.
>> Yeah. and just just let her go. Two, she
could be charged and then they would
probably they might set a bond. Usually
they don't set No, they won't set bonds.
There's no bonds anymore. Yeah.
>> Yeah. There's no bond in the state of
Illinois. So they would just
>> Oh, so there's not anymore.
>> No. So they would make the determination
as to whether or not
>> it's called a free travel.
>> Yeah. They would decide if she needs to
stay or not, which
>> So I have to stay for 48 hours
regardless.
>> No, no, no, no, no. So here's so within
the next 48 hours the state attorney is
going to look at it and it can make the
determination on how so it could be
tomorrow morning it could be up to 48
hours it actually work tomorrow.
>> How old are your kids?
>> Eight five and four.
>> Okay. So four kids involved.
>> Yeah. He's not even their dad. So I
don't know.
>> Tomorrow morning.
>> Do you have your ID?
>> Can somebody's being chased by dog? Can
he grab your ID for you, Amanda?
>> Can he grab your ID for you?
>> Is it in your wallet?
>> Yeah, we're going to go over. Are you
ready? And I know it's as ready as you
can be, but
Okay, let's go. We're going to go to the
other side of the car. That way, nobody
can see.
Oh, careful. Don't fall.
Okay, go ahead and have a seat.
