This community briefing is intended to provide you with information about an officer involved incident that occurred in San Jose. We are still at the very early stages of this investigation and our understanding of the incident may change as additional evidence is collected, analyzed, and reviewed. The case is being monitored by the San Jose Police Internal Affairs Unit, the City Attorney's Office, and the Office of the Independent Police Auditor. We'll walk you through relevant video footage and evidence related to this case so you can have a better understanding of what occurred. Based on what we know right now, we will not make any conclusions about whether the officer involved acted consistently with our policy and the law until all facts are known and the investigation is complete. I ask that you use caution when viewing the community briefing and be mindful of young children or sensitive persons who may be watching. What you're about to see may be disturbing. Uses of force and violent confrontations can be difficult to watch. There also may be strong language used by those shown in the video. Viewer discretion is advised. This community briefing provides additional information, evidence, and context beyond the initial update provided shortly after the incident occurred. On January 17th, 2026, two suspects engaged in a crime spree that spanned from Sacramento to San Jose and involved multiple other jurisdictions. The suspects were initially unknown, but were later identified as Muhammad Hussein and Edward MSAS. The series of crimes began with theft of a red Corvette from a dealership in Sacramento. Later that same day, the suspects committed an armed robbery of a convenience store in San Monteo County, followed by another armed robbery at a liquor store on McKe Road in San Jose. The next day, they committed two more robberies, one in another surrounding city and another in San Jose on Coleman Avenue. On January 21st, SJPD's real-time intelligence center flagged the stolen Corvette in our automated license plate reader system and provided patrol officers with recent locations in San Jose. San Jose officers located the vehicle and engaged in a brief pursuit before losing the vehicle and locating it unoccupied shortly after. Again, the suspects were still unidentified at this point in the investigation. Later that same day, at approximately 2:01 p.m., San Jose police officers responded to a car dealership in the 900 block of Capitol Expressway for a report of an armed carjacking. One of the suspects, later identified as Muhammad Hussein, brandished a firearm at an employee, stole a green Corvette, and fled the scene. >> 10 of the emergency. >> Hi. Hi. Uh, uh, somebody just held on by a gunpoint and it was stealing a Corvette at the moment. >> What kind of gun was it? >> Uh, what kind of gun was it? It looked like a pistol. I think it's a pistol. >> By the time officers arrived, the suspect was gone, but they immediately began searching for the vehicle. Shortly thereafter, the San Jose Police Department's helicopter, Air3, located the stolen vehicle traveling southbound outside San Jose's jurisdiction. Air3 monitored the suspect vehicle and working with SJPD communications provided realtime updates to law enforcement partners in surrounding jurisdictions. Officers with the Hollister Police Department and deputies with the San Bonito County Sheriff's Office were notified that Air3 was tracking the vehicle as it entered their jurisdiction. Air3 continued to provide updates until the Hollisher Police Department and San Bonito County Sheriff's Office located the suspect vehicle and engaged it in a slow speed pursuit. The pursuit ended when the vehicle became disabled at which point the suspect exited the vehicle armed with a handgun and an officer involved shooting occurred in the city of Hollister. The suspect fled but was located again where a second officer involved shooting occurred. The suspect then carjacked a white Honda at gunpoint and fled the city of Hollister. No San Jose officers other than those in air 3 were involved in the Hollister incident. The officer involved incidents in Hollister are being investigated by the Hollister Police Department and the San Bonito County Sheriff's Office. As the suspect fled northbound back towards San Jose, officers from multiple agencies pursued the suspect as he drove at high speeds on the freeway, endangering motorists while attempting to evade capture. As the suspect re-entered San Jose, our officers assumed control of the pursuit on city streets. At approximately 3:53 p.m., the suspect collided with a stopped vehicle near the intersection of Julian Street and Notre Dame Avenue. After the collision, the suspect exited his vehicle and charged at an arriving San Jose police sergeant, immediately firing multiple rounds as the sergeant exited his vehicle. In the body worn camera video, you can see the sergeant's hand being struck and begin to bleed from the gunfire. A bullet also struck the sergeant in the head, fracturing his skull. In response, the sergeant discharged his weapon at the suspect. As the suspect continued shooting at him, the suspect's bullet struck the sergeant's police vehicle while the sergeant returned fire, all while bleeding from his head. The suspect then entered the driver's seat of the police vehicle in an attempt to flee, but was unsuccessful. Moments later, the suspect exited the vehicle and fled on foot toward another vehicle, stopped at the opposite intersection. As the suspect ran toward occupied vehicles, still armed with the handgun, additional officers fired at him. This intersection is directly adjacent to an elevated portion of Highway 87, which made gunfire acoustics disorienting, as described by individuals interviewed during the investigation. Officers firing from multiple positions heard what they believed was gunfire coming from the suspect as he ran. The suspect fell to the ground as officers fired at him and immediately after falling, he was struck by a responding patrol vehicle. Video analysis later determined that this vehicle collision dislodged the firearm from the suspect's hand, sending it into an embankment. While on the ground, the suspect could be seen continuing to move, and officers believed that at this time he was still armed with the firearm, prompting additional officers to fire their weapons. The firearm was a 9mm semi-automatic pistol with a 33 round magazine. The source of the gun is under investigation. As a result, the suspect sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The suspect was unidentified until this point, but was later confirmed to be Muhammad Hussein. The sergeant was critically injured and was rushed to the hospital by other patrol officers where he was treated and later released. Fast-paced detective work identified the other suspect in the crime spree as Edward MS and he was arrested within 24 hours of the shooting event. He has since been charged with multiple robberies. Some of this incident was captured overhead by a police helicopter. Portions of that video and bystander video have been posted online and replayed in news reports. In total, three sergeants and six officers were involved in the use of force during this incident. Their experience at the San Jose Police Department ranged from 4 to 19 years. All their department issued bodywn cameras were activated at the time of the shooting. This was the San Jose Police Department's first officer involved shooting of 2026. The subsequent investigation led detectives to identify several other armed robberies that match the suspect's methods and physical description. These incidents are still under investigation. As with all SJPD officer involved shootings, a thorough investigation is being conducted by the department's homicide unit and the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office. The incident is also being reviewed administratively by SJPD internal affairs, the city attorney's office, and the office of the independent police auditor. An independent determination of the legality of this officer involved shooting will be made by the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office after a thorough review of all the facts and evidence. Their findings will be publicly released in a report at a later date. You will now watch bodywn camera footage captured at the scene. Viewer discretion is advised. Another vehicle. >> Big 10.
