Hello, I'm Humble County Sheriff William Hansel. I'm here to talk about a deputy involved shooting that occurred on June 5th, 2025 at the Bear River Rancheria in Lolita. When we have a critical incident such as this, we release as much information as possible as soon as the investigation allows. On June 5th, 2025, at approximately 2:16 p.m., Humble County Sheriff's Office Dispatch Center received a call for service at the Bear River Recreation Center located at 266 Kaisner Road in Lolita. Dispatch was advised that a male had entered the recreation center with a bandaged bloody arm and was dripping blood inside the building. >> 911, what's your emergency? >> Hi, I'm I work for Bear River Band Road Rancheria. I got a guy that up here in our rec center. Um he showed up with a big old bloody bandage on his arm and now he's in the shower and I asked him if he need medical attention. He said yes he does. >> Okay, let me >> and then now he's just dripping blood everywhere. >> Okay, let me transfer to medical. Do not hang up. >> Ill River deputy Corporal Brown was the first to arrive on scene at 2:27 p.m. Minutes later, emergency medical personnel arrived. Corporal Brown contacted a male subject who had an obvious serious injury to his arm. The subject identified himself as a Thomas Johnson and said he had been in a car accident, but refused to provide any further details. >> You It's been wrapped like that. >> He said he'd rather have it be sewed up, so I'm assuming it's cut good. >> You probably need some stitches. >> Okay, >> sweet. I'll go let them know. How old are you? Mike. >> Why does that matter? >> They're going to ask you and I'm going to tell them. >> Okay. What's your first name? >> Thomas. >> Yeah. >> Okay. His >> name's Tommy. >> Deputy Bradford Anderson also arrived to assist with the situation. Paramedics treated a severe laceration to the man's left arm and advised he should seek hospital care for his wound. The subject refused further treatment and he walked away from the recreational center. Approximately 10 minutes later, employees located a vehicle in a nearby parking lot that Anderson was possibly driving. Deputies Brown and Anderson located a 2015 Lexus sedan and it was determined to be registered to Nicholas Anderson. It was determined that the subject falsely identified himself and his real name was in fact Nicholas Anderson. The Bare River Tribe wanted Anderson to be removed from the property. Deputies then informed Anderson that if he stayed, he'd be trespassing on tribal land. >> Something's going on. >> Okay. What's your actual birthday? >> Don't you know that? I mean, >> I know your full name, but I don't know your birthday. Does >> that matter? >> Okay, here's the deal. They don't want you on their property. Their property is all of this, including the casino and down the hill to the freeway. So, you're going to have to get in your car and take off or you're going to go to jail for trespassing. All this could have been avoided if you would have just gone to the hospital or given your real name. I don't know why you were walking away from your car. >> Well, you guys there >> Say that again. >> You had many men over there and I >> I mean, if we didn't want you to leave, we would have stopped you trying to leave. >> I'm good. if they want to, you know, say that I'm trespassing. Okay. I'm going to still use So, there's a couple things I need to grab >> from your car or something. >> And then I'll leave. >> So, do you need a super? Why is this super important? >> Because they want you off of the property. >> Okay. >> Is there private property? And they want you trespass and say you can't be here. >> That's private. >> Yep. >> The whole owned by the tribe property. >> This contact was not adversarial and it ended with Anderson agreeing to walk away and leave the property. A short time later, corporals Brown and Anderson parked near the north end of Kaiser Road, still on Bay River Renta property. Nicholas Anderson drove past them, turned around, and stopped at the end of the roadway. At that point, both corporals got out of their vehicles to speak with him again. As seen on bodywn camera, Nicholas Anderson exited his vehicle, reached into his pocket, pulled out a folding knife, opened it, held it above his head in a threatening manner. The corporals immediately gave repeated commands for him to drop the knife as they moved backwards. Nicholas Anderson ignored all the commands as he continued to walk directly towards Corporal Anderson with a knife still raised in a threatening manner. Corporal Anderson fired three shots in defense of his own life, striking Anderson in the chest. Nicholas Anderson then fell to the ground. Deputies contacted Nicholas Anderson, secured the knife, and immediately rendered emergency medical aid, including CPR. They did this until paramedics arrived. As a warning, some viewers may find this video disturbing, and it's not suitable for children. >> Camera recording started. Yes, sir. >> Huh? >> Put that down right now. Anderson was transported to Ray Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. He was later identified as 29-year-old Nicholas David Anderson. The investigation revealed that Nicholas Anderson was from out of the area. He had suffered that injury the day before and sought treatment at a local hospital. He was subsequently transferred to Providence St. Joseph Hospital. It was learned that Anderson then walked away from Providence St. Joseph Hospital earlier that day prior to receiving treatment. A total of two deputies were involved in this critical incident, one of which fired the weapon. Corporal Bradford Anderson fired three rounds. The number of gunshot wounds sustained by the suspect was two. While processing the scene, investigators did locate the knife associated with the suspect. When we have a deputy involved shooting, multiple investigations are automatically launched. The Humble County Critical Incident response team is investigating this incident with the Humble County District Attorney's Office leading the investigation. An administrative review is being conducted evaluating the actions of the involved deputies and identifying necessary training and policy improvements. This video is made due to California state law requiring the release of bodywn camera footage associated with deputy involved shootings. It also gives us the opportunity to provide a better understanding of the events that lead to these critical incidents.
