On February 6th of 2025, two De Mo police officers were involved in a fatal shooting on the city's southeast side. After reviewing the evidence of the investigation that followed, both the Office of the Attorney General for the state of Iowa and the Pulk County Attorney's Office have issued rulings that the officer's use of deadly force during this incident was legally justified. This video has been prepared to help you understand what happened that evening. It contains still photos, audio, and video from the incident as it occurred that evening. It has been edited for time and edited of the most graphic images. The content may be disturbing for some, so viewer discretion is advised. This incident began during the evening of February 6th when De Mo Police Department narcotics control section investigators were conducting surveillance as a part of an ongoing methamphetamine trafficking investigation. During that surveillance, investigators were monitoring a vehicle connected to the investigation. That vehicle was later learned to be occupied by two people, 52-year-old Jennifer Stewart and 43-year-old David Kint Jr. Investigators watched as Stuart pulled the vehicle into a convenient store parking lot at Southeast 14th Street in Mari Street. Kins was observed leaving the vehicle and moments later walking westbound on Mari Street. At this time, Kint was carrying a duffel bag. Narcotic section investigators requested the assistance of uniform patrol officers with stopping Kint as the investigation continued. Senior police officers Neil Schaefer and Titus Deford responded to assist. Officer Deford arrives first and makes contact with Kent in the 12200 block of Mari Street. Officer Schaefer arrives a few seconds later. Within approximately 21 seconds of officer DeFord arriving and approximately 10 seconds of Officer Schaefer arriving, Kins pulls a screwdriver from his pocket, raises it, and charges at Officer Schaefer. Both officers discharge their duty handguns, striking Kent. A total of four shots were fired. The officers begin life-saving efforts until relieved by De Moines Fire Department medics. Kins is transported to a local hospital for advanced care where he later dies. During the investigation that followed, investigators learned from people close to Kint that he was aware of an active parole violation warrant for his arrest that upon his arrest would have resulted in a lengthy prison sentence. Investigators learned that Kint had made multiple statements that he was not going to go back to prison and that if officers did attempt to arrest him, he would pull a knife or other object on officers, attack them, and make them kill him. At the time, officer Schaefer and DeFord stopped Kins. His identity was not known to them and they were unaware of the act of arrest warrant. Body cam and incark recordings will begin now. Viewer discretion is advised. Take your hands in your pockets for me. All right. Take your hands in your pockets. So, we just got a call about a suspicious guy out walking around with a mask on.
