I'm Assistant Chief Christy Smith of the Houston Police Department. This critical incident briefing is intended to provide you with information about an officer involved shooting that occurred in Houston on May 16th, 2025. You are about to see video footage that is related to this incident. HPD conducts thorough investigations into officer involved shootings. These typically require investigators to interview multiple witnesses, view numerous hours of video footage, and analyze a significant amount of forensic evidence. It is important to note that we are in the very early stages of the investigation and we continue to review additional evidence as it is collected and analyzed. The videos you are about to see can be graphic and may be difficult to watch. These videos may also contain strong language. Viewer discretion is advised. At approximately 3:25 p.m., Houston police officers responded to a robbery in progress call at a retail store in the 5100 block of Almea Road. Officers encountered Mr. Ernest Duke Harrison, matching the suspect description and carrying a machete. He was crossing the Southmore pedestrian bridge. Officers gave Mr. Harrison verbal commands to stop. Mr. Harrison ran toward one of the responding officers with his machete raised. The officer discharged her duty weapon, striking Mr. Harrison once in the head. Officers immediately began rendering first aid until HFD paramedics arrived and transported Mr. Harrison to the hospital. No officers or bystanders were injured.
