Hello, my name is Agent Matthew Longshore and I'm a public information officer for the Aurora Police Department. This critical incident briefing will provide you with information about an officer involved shooting that occurred on Monday, May 12th, 2025 in the city of Aurora. As part of our commitment to the community, you are about to hear 911 recordings and see video footage so you have a better understanding of what occurred based on the information we know right now. A word of caution, what you're about to see may be disturbing and difficult to watch. Strong language will be used. Viewer discretion is advised. At 2:58 p.m. Monday, May 12th, 2025, Aurora 911 receives a call about a person trespassing at an off-site airport parking lot located in the 19900 block of East 56th Avenue. The caller notes the suspect is not wearing any shoes and appears to be under the influence of drugs. The caller also notes the suspect does not appear to be injured, is not in possession of any weapons, and is not threatening violence. Due to other higher priority calls for service, the call is placed in the pending queue. Between 3:14 and 4:59 p.m., Aurora 911 receives additional calls from employees of the business. The reporting parties informed dispatchers the suspect is still on the property, is now trying to open up car doors at the parking lot, and they are concerned about the safety of customers and other employees. During the 911 call at 4:59 p.m., the reporting party tells dispatchers the suspect is becoming more aggressive and now trying to fight employees. Here's a recording of those 911 calls. Tell me exactly what happened. So, we have a guy that we've g uh given a couple waters and he's just sitting in the office, but he seems like he's off some type of drug or something and there's another lady in there that's working and she's feeling uncomfortable. Do you think he needs an ambulance or just somebody to come out and check on him? Just somebody to come and check on him. I don't think he needs an ambulance. Trying to get him to get off my lot. He's not talking. He's just he's walking in and out of my office trying to unlock people's car doors. I've placed a call to you guys already about a gentleman on my lot. He's trying to fight myself and a couple of my other my employees. They told me to call if anything changes with this gentleman. I don't know if it is. Okay. So, he's trying to fight with you now. He's trying to fight me and my employees, a couple of my other employees. Due to the suspect's unpredictable behavior and increasing threat to public safety, Aurora 911 dispatchers upgrade the priority status of the call. At 5:18 p.m., a solo officer is dispatched to the location and arrives at 5:27. At 5:28 p.m., the officer locates the suspect and begins speaking with him. About 1 minute later, the suspect charges the officer. The officer attempts to control the suspect using a collapsible baton and a taser. Both are ineffective, and the suspect takes the officer to a ground. At 5:29 p.m., an employee again calls Aurora 911 to report the responding officer was just tackled by the suspect and is in trouble, initiating a citywide help call. Here is a recording of that 911 call. What's going on? The the cop that you guys sent over to take care of the gentleman on my lot, he is in trouble. He's What do you mean the cop's in trouble? The cop is in trouble. Okay. What's happening with him? He got he he came over here to talk to him and then he like heard something yelling and screaming. He got tackled by he got tackled by the devil that I sent for you guys to come look at. Okay. The cops has a gun on the guy or the guy has the shot. At 5:30 p.m. the officer gets back to his feet and draws his firearm. He gives the suspect multiple commands to get on the ground, but the suspect doesn't listen and walks towards the officer. The officer fires two shots, fatally wounding the suspect. Denver police officers are first on scene to assist. Officers provide first aid until medical responders arrive at the scene.
