Hello, my name is Captain David Cortez with the Fort Lauderdale Police Department's Violent Crime Division. This is a critical incident summary regarding an officer involved shooting that occurred on Sunday, January 19th, 2025 at approximately 3:06 p.m. The videos you're about to see are graphic and viewer discretion is advised. On this day, Sergeant Trevor Thomas, who is assigned an unmarked police vehicle, was working an ongoing traffic enforcement plan to proactively combat aggressive driving in the city of Fort Lauderdale. Just after 3 p.m., Sergeant Thomas attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the 100 block of Southwest 27th Avenue. Sergeant Thomas activated his lights and sirens in order to initiate the traffic stop. The driver refused to stop and fled the area at a high rate of speed. At that time, Sergeant Thomas advised via police radio for other officers in the area to be on the lookout for the vehicle. Tango 210. [Music] >> You can follow it. It's going to be eastbound First Street coming up at 27. It's a uh silver Mercedes blackmail. A few minutes later, another FLPD officer advised that he had located the vehicle nearby, pulling into the gas station at 3100 Davy Boulevard just west on Davy from 27 approaching 31st now. >> Attention all units bolo for 34 tango2 at eastbound first and 27th Avenue. Sergeant Thomas was still nearby and pulled into the business to assist the other officer. >> Tango two. Shots fired. One in custody. Rescue code three. 31 in Davy. Gun in custody. Guy in custody. >> Shots fired. 31 in Davy. One in custody. Stand by for fire. >> Let's watch Sergeant Thomas' bodywn camera of the shooting. It is important to note that our bodywn cameras have a 30-se secondond function which does not capture audio. The officer involved shooting occurred during this first 30 seconds. >> Put your hands up. Put your hands up. >> Grab Grab them. >> I got it. I got it. >> Grab them. Put your hands behind your back. Put your hands behind your back. Put your hands behind your back. >> Now, let's take a closer look at Sergeant Thomas's video. We have slowed this video down and zoomed in so that it is easier to follow. As Sergeant Thomas exits his vehicle, so does the driver of the Mercedes. The suspect retrieves what appears to be a firearm from his waistband. At this time, Sergeant Thomas discharges his departmentisssued firearm, striking the suspect multiple times. Let's watch the moments immediately following the shooting from another officer's perspective. Here's that video again in slow motion. You will see the firearm in the suspect's hand. After the shooting, the suspect's weapon was determined to be an airpowered replica firearm without any colored markings or other indications that it was a replica. The suspect has been identified as 23-year-old Chad McBra Jr. He was transported by Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue to Broward Health Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is leading the investigation into this shooting. Additionally, the Fort Lauderdale Police Department's Office of Internal Affairs is conducting a thorough review of this incident. Both components are standard procedure. Our goal is to present all of the details available at this time to you in an impartial manner. Rest assured, we will continue to uphold the same level of careful consideration and transparency. This investigation will take time to complete, and we ask for our community's patience and understanding during this process. [Music]
