I'm Detective Judy Ovido, a public information officer with the El Paso Police Department. The following information is intended to provide details as an officer involved shooting that occurred on June 1st, 2025. Transparency and accountability are key to our ability in serving the El Paso community. The following video you are about to see is from officers bodywn cameras. Bodywn cameras are used by officers assigned to patrol and some specialty units. Per policy, they are worn at torso level and capture the view of the line of sight from that perspective. It is important to note that the camera lens is fixed and does not capture everything seen or experienced by officers. When activated, both audio and video turn on. Bodywn cameras have a buffer video without audio for 30 seconds prior to activation. This feature is designed to capture events that happen suddenly when an officer does not immediately have time to activate the camera. The information and images in this video may be disturbing to some people. Viewer discretion is advised. This incident began when officers responded to a family violence assault in progress at the 6400 block of Paso Villa. Upon arrival to the scene, officers were directed towards a residence down the street. Officers walked towards the residence when the offender walked out of the house with a gun and pointed it towards officers. Gunfire was exchanged and the offender was shot. One of the officers sustained a gunshot wound to her right leg during the exchange. The officer was transported to a local hospital and the offender was also taken to the hospital where he died. Wait a minute. Let me see your hands. Let me see your hands. Stop. >> No. I'm hit. I'm hit. >> [ __ ] >> [ __ ] I'll put my target. Okay. [ __ ] [ __ ] hell. The following video is from the same incident with the other responding officer's bodywn camera. >> Yeah. [Music] Shots fired. Shots fired. >> Put the gun down. >> Put it down. It's going around. Put it down. >> Get down. Get down. >> Subject down. I got an officer who shot. >> Both officers involved are two-year veteran police officers. The El Paso Police Department Crimes Against Persons Unit is investigating this incident as well as independent investigations by Internal Affairs and the Texas Rangers. Conclusions about whether the officer's actions are consistent with the law and the department policies will not be made until all facts are known and the investigation is complete.
