I gave the tissue back to her. Well, you took it out of the store, so that's a theft. So, you can either cooperate Listen to me. You can either cooperate with us or we'll take you to jail. All right? So, give me your name. I'm cooperating. I did not take the tissue out. I gave it back to you. So, regardless of whether you gave it back to them or not, it's still theft. You still took it. I didn't take it out of the store. Okay. Took it past points of sale. Okay? I had a paper paper towel. Explanations are fine for after. Right now, I need your name. I had paper towel and I had tissue. What is your name? Monique. Monique, what's your last name? Smith. I ain't trying to hide. I'm sitting down. It's hot out here. I don't need to be yelled at. I don't need to be doing that cuz I know I gave the tissue back. I had a roll of tissue under me and I had paper towel and I priced it and I forgot the tissue. Well, we have a huge theft problem at Kroger. Okay? If you didn't steal anything, we'll be out of your hair here in just a few minutes. Okay. But while we're doing our investigation, you do have to provide us the information we're asking for, okay? You just Why do I have a warrant? Why do I have a warrant? I don't know. I haven't been able to get that far cuz you haven't been straight with me. I mean, you didn't let me know it. You're doing this to me. I'm You're doing this to me. You're moving around, that's why. Stop moving. I'm trying to loosen them up. Okay, wait a minute now. Relax. I am relaxing. Look, let me put my arms together because I've been through this. Okay. Now, let my arm go. You are not going to trip me. Okay, I'm not going to trip you. I'm preventing you from moving cuz you have not been cooperative from the jump. All I was trying to do is investigate the theft investigation and you have stopped me at every turn. No, you said I got a warrant for my arrest once I gave you my ID uh my uh thing. You may have both. You do have a warrant, but I was trying to figure out the theft thing before. Based on your reaction and how you're behaving towards us, I'm going to say you probably stole I haven't been doing this job I've only been doing this job for a few days. All this is from home. So, until we can determine that, they're going to be theft. I'll tell you what, you have a big bag. That's all from home. Cuz we gave her Where is the soda? Where is my soda? Then I I'm not going to give you a drink cuz there's a chance you stole it. I'm not going to give you a drink cuz it's something you stole. a lot of stuff with me. Come on now. Stay right there. Stay right there. Stay right there. Stay right there. Stay right there. Did you pay for that? No, she wouldn't let me. Who? The lady at the register. Ask her. Okay. Oh, she got to have that. You're going to be detained at the at the moment, okay? Okay, that's fine. Okay. That's fine. You want me to drop this? You want me to drop this? Yeah, drop. This is my bag. This is my bag. Okay. Like I stood there for a hour, like almost an hour. Okay. So, again, so you're just being detained at the moment, okay? Doesn't mean you're being arrested. So, we're just trying to clear things up. Okay. What's up? Look at that. So, Yeah, I want to press charges. Okay, on both of them? Both of them. Yeah, they have all that is ours. Okay. So, so apparently she they're saying that No, she want me to come to the car to the door to pick up a card. I'm like, I'm not going to the front door to pick up no card. She want to pay for it. Well, she already bagged it. Yeah, okay. She already bagged the merchandise. They're claiming that they were that they wouldn't let you guys wouldn't let them pay, apparently. No, she See how long when we called you guys? They've been at the register and I saw her stuff that bag. I was looking at her from here and I saw her stuff the bag with our merchandise with the hangers. Okay. So, they they didn't pay for any of that. They didn't pay for nothing. Okay. She said she have a return and she have and she need a card. Okay. So, I said, "Where's your card?" Oh, it's by the door. If I could go get it. I said, "I'm not paying by the door to go get no card." No. Okay. And she want one of my ladies to go get the card. I said, "No, we're not going out there." Right. Now, okay. So, So, at this time you are under arrest for shoplifting, okay? Oh, wow. And now that the shoplifting is confirmed, the officers decide to officially arrest the woman. So, it sounds like you didn't pay for any of this. Okay. You got ID on you? Um, no, I don't. You don't have ID on you? I don't have my ID on me. Okay. You want to grab a seat? You want to grab a seat somewhere or something? I don't want to have have you stand the whole time. Yeah, if you want to go over here. So, before we start, I'm going to just I'm going to read you your rights, okay? And since you are under arrest for shoplift, you have the right to remain silent. Do you understand each of these rights I've explained to you? And then, having these rights in mind, do you wish to talk to us? What? What? Having the right Having your Miranda rights in mind, do you want to talk to me? Oh, yes. I want to clear the air. Yes. Okay. So, let me get your your info first, okay? So, you don't got ID on you? No, I don't. What's your last name? Davis. Davis? What's your first name? Tichina. T I C H I N A. Say that again. T I C H I N A. I don't see how I'm being arrested if If that lady told me to get out, how am I being arrested? Go ahead and tell me what happened. What happened? Yeah. Okay, so when I walked in the store, I asked the guy that works in the store, "What time do you guys close?" He said, "12." And I was like, "Okay, I got a little bit of time." So, I was like 10:40. Maybe like 10:50 when I walked in. And so I 10:50? Yeah, it was like 10:50 cuz I asked him what time they close, he said 12. Okay. And I was like, "Okay, cool. I have a little bit of time." So, I'm just shopping, shopping, shopping. And then, I guess it was 11:30 when they closed and I didn't know that because he said 12. The lady that I guess she's the manager, maybe, the black lady up there. Good. Yeah, so the lady That's when she comes to the back where I was at and she's like, "We're closed. We're closed." And I'm like, "You're closed? You guys said you guys close at 12." And I'm like, "What time is it?" She's like, "It's like 11:30. We close at 11:30." Okay. And I'm like, "Okay." And so, I started, you know, going through what I was going to get. I'm like looking through my stuff. She's like, "We're closed. We're closed." And I'm like, "Okay, so The woman explains her side of the story. And so when I get up to the front, this lady was already up there and she was like doing whatever she was doing with the lady up at the register. There was only one register open. And so when I came up there, I was standing stand I stood there quietly, didn't say anything. I'm just like letting them do whatever they're doing, waiting to get my stuff. And so the lady she's just going back and forth like instead of opening up another register to let me pay for my stuff, she's just going back and forth yelling and yelling like like what is that going to do? We're closed. We're closed. We're closed. saying? She's like, "We're closed. I don't know what you're doing." Uh not me. She wasn't talking to me actually. She was talking to that other lady. She's like, "I don't know what you what you're doing." You don't know the other person? No, I know her but I don't I don't know her like I don't know her like that but I know her. I know her but I don't You didn't come with her? No. No, I came with my friend. And so um so I'm sitting there and I'm like, "Okay, so I'm like can you open up another register?" And she's like, "All registers shut down." And I'm like, "Okay, so you're just going to keep going back and forth yelling instead of trying to help the situation." And she's like, um what did she say? Then she went in the back She went in the back, came back out and then yelled said something else to the girl and then um and then that's when I think she was asking to get her card. And so she the lady wouldn't go get her card so she could pay for the stuff. She's like she want her to leave so get her card or you know go get her card. And she's like, "I'm not going outside. I can't go outside." She didn't she wasn't asked to go outside. The problem was coming to the door. And that's when I came and looked I that's when I was like, "I'll just go get it." And I brought my car with me because I had my my bag in there. And so I brought it to there and I came out and I looked. And then that's when I went back in and she's like, "You You guys get you can get out. Just get out." And I'm like, "What are you talking about?" So I'm like I'm taking I'm taking my stuff. You don't You don't want to pay for it? She's like, "Just get out." I'm like, "Okay." So what would you take that as? To just get out, right? Well, I mean to me I would I I wouldn't get out with unpaid merchandise, right? I mean, what store do you know But if she's if I said, "You don't want me to pay for my seven." she said, "Just get out." What would What would you take that for? Take that out. Just leave, right? The officer digs deeper trying to get to the whole truth. So, what they're saying is that you both were saying that your card was outside. I never said just right. I never said that. Never once said that. So, you can ask her if I said I never once said my car was outside. I asked lady if you want me to go get the card for her because she was just standing there yelling not getting the not getting the card. So, that was just prolonging the situation. Yeah. So, why wouldn't you just go grab the card and let her pay for and then let her go. That didn't make any sense. So, why would you go grab a card for someone else you already know? Because she was standing right there in the front of the store. She walked She was walking to the front of the store, too. And I was going to hand it right to her behind me. Like I wasn't going to take your card or anything. And when I came out here I didn't see anyone like I don't see anyone out here and then I walked back in the store. Do you have anything else to add? Um no, that's No, after I grabbed the seven she was like, "Get out. Just get out. Get out." I grabbed the seven and I left. Meanwhile, the other woman involved is also questioned. Hey, how are you doing? I'm okay. Hey, I'm Officer Hang. So, just so you're aware this is audio video recorded, okay? No. Yeah, okay. Um just for the record though, can you just state your name? Kira Hampton. What's that? Kira Hampton. You know why you're being talked to, right? Um for a theft, right? What's that? Theft. Yeah, so at this point you're So, you're under arrest for shoplifting, okay? I'm going to read you your rights. Do you understand each of these rights I've explained to you? No, sir. What's that? No, sir. Okay, and then having these rights in mind, do you wish to talk to me? Yes, sir. What occurs? So, we were in the shopping and then um I went to the register and um you know, I started putting my stuff up there and then I realized that I didn't have my card. And so I asked her can she walk me to the door to get my car, you know? And she said she couldn't walk me to the door to get my car. And I said Yeah, I see. The lady in there? Oh, okay. Mhm. It was two of them working the uh behind the counter at that time. And so I said, "Can you walk me to the door to get my car?" And she said, "I can't walk you to the door to get your car, but you can walk to to the door to get your car." I said, "Okay, can you walk with me to the door, you know?" Because I know how this works. And I said, "Can you walk with me to the door to get my car?" And she said, "No, I cannot walk to the door to get your car." She said, "You can go, but I can't go." So, I said, "Okay." So, I walked to the door and that's where I stopped right there at the last door because I know how this works. Yeah. And sure enough, yeah. What do you mean you know how how this works? how this works. I know how I I know like she's telling me to basically go outside to get my car, but you can't come with me. Yeah. Well, I mean they they probably have policies against that, right? Unlike the first suspect, she's more cooperative and honest about what happened. I just know like from my point of view like from my side as a as a um the person on the other end of the stick like I know that I shouldn't walk out the doors with nothing, you know what I mean? So, I knew that that wasn't a Right. So, that's why when I walked, I stayed right there and I don't know how long I was there until you guys came. So, I already knew. That's it. So, if you I mean, if you forgot your card, why didn't you why didn't you leave like leave the items and go grab your card and come back? No, cuz she told I was walking to the cuz she was supposed to be at the door and then she says, "Just go ahead, go to the door. I don't care. Go ahead." And I knew she was on the phone. I said, "You're on the phone with the police." I said, "Oh my god, why?" You know, you called the police and all. I said, "You don't even have to do that." I'm going to wait for my stuff. And so she said, "Go ahead, go Go ahead. Go ahead." So, in my You go ahead. Go go to the door." So I went to the door and sure enough So I mean I would say to your daughter, I um I'm not going to try to pull your sleeve or nothing because I know what it is, but to be honest, okay, maybe I was I did put a couple of things in the bag that I wasn't going to pay for, but cuz I know being honest is your motto. So and I'm just going to be honest with you. No, and I appreciate it. No, I I'm going to be honest with you because I'm not going to I'm not going to try to insult you like that, but I had a couple of things in the you intended to pay for most of it, but you did put a few things I'm not going to lie to you. What was What What did you put? What did you put in your purse? Nothing. Nothing's in my purse. You can look in my Okay. You can look in my purse. Nothing's in my purse. I didn't detain nothing in my purse. I only put stuff in the plastic bags that you can have when you're in the stores. I didn't detain nothing on me cuz that's that wasn't my mission, but like I said, I was going to try to not pay for a pair of shoes I wear in there and this Nike outfit. But other than that, I mean, it's just hard times and that's what I was going to do, you know? No, I understand. a lot domestic violence and stuff, so But other than that, like I've been doing good for 5 years. You know, I have a I'm a single mom. I have a daughter and I take good care of her. Where's your Where's your daughter at now? She's with my auntie right now. My auntie is a paraplegic, so she has one leg. Okay. And so I don't you know? Yeah. All right. Well again, I appreciate you being cooperative. She tries to explain her actions, appealing to the officer's emotions. So I am. So again, so it goes back to like so if you knew kind of what was going down and you knew she was on the phone with the police, I mean, why why even risk it? Because I wasn't going to I wasn't going to steal the stuff. I was going to pay for it like I told you. So I was you What? Why just not leave Why just not leave the items and go grab your cart and come back? You You kind of You said you kind of had an idea of what was going down, right? Yeah, yeah, I did. I did. I did. But yet you still went through with it. Because I wasn't going to come outside. You know, that's why I stayed at the doors. I know. I know this stuff. I know like what to do when So, I'm like I'm not going out the doors with this stuff. Like you told me to go, but I'm not going out the doors. I'm going to just go to the door and if she doesn't read my card, then here, you can have it. And that's why your security guard was right there. He was trying to follow me outside. So, I knew she was on the phone to you guys. I You probably heard me say you were on the phone to the police. Yeah. Where was Where's your card at? Where were you trying to get your card at? I don't know. It's It has to be in the car somewhere because it's not in my wallet. Where's your card My My friend Alicia's car right there. Where? Alicia's car down talking to the police. Which one? The straight right there in the Whose vehicle is it? My friend Alicia's. Oh, okay. Yeah. Okay. She's over there. All right. And so, I looked in my wallet and stuff and my card wasn't in there. So, it has to be there because I just used it not too long ago. The key is in there. Okay. But that's why I say I'm not like your supervisor said like don't lie to you and whatever. I'm not going to because Okay. I have too much to lose and um All right. Do you have Do you have anything else you'd like to add to your statement? No, just that I've came a long way and that I Like I said, I knew that that you know, I knew what not to do. So, that's why I didn't go past the doors. And However, it's up to the store to decide whether to press charges. Okay. asking you for like whatever. Um Like after dealing with my own mistakes and choices, Yeah. I will, but I'm just asking you to make whatever you decide to do, you do. When I'm taking to jail, can you just write me a birthday? My auntie has a one leg. So, So, ultimately, Burlington's right going to decide that. So, we'll go chat with them again, but She has a one leg and then tell me like the other. Yeah. I promise I'll go to court. Okay. Yeah, well, you'll get a court hearing. Just make sure you go to it, okay? I promise you I will. That's why I I will. I just need to get to my baby. She All All she has is me. Yeah. I've been doing so good as a single mom and being beat on, you know? Domestic violence and stuff. I've been doing so good. Yeah. I'm tired. You know, tired. Not saying I don't Yeah, I believe it. All right. But at the end of the day, right? So So their story and they're the victim and that's their They're wanting to pursue charges, right? So Well, yeah. No, I understand if they if they, you know, pursue a charge and stuff. I'm just telling you like if they do that um cuz I know it's up to you guys. I will come to the court date. If you can just write me, you know, cuz I need to just get my baby or they take me with my baby. Okay. And then I can drop her off. Okay. So we'll end the the interview, right? So have any threats or promises been made to you while we started this interview? No. Okay. And at any time during this statement did you request for an attorney? No. Okay. No. I'll give you my phone. Okay. It's not that big of You know, it's not that it's it's simple, you know? Just tell the truth and just like it's not a big Like you said, it's not the end of the world. No, and again, I appreciate you being cooperative, right? And being honest. Store staff, however, provided different story. in the white t-shirt. She was the one saying she didn't have a She was the one that was saying she left her credit card outside, right? And I was asking you guys to go get it. blonde, the shorter one. Yeah. Yeah. With the Yeah, and she wanted me to go get her card from the you kept saying no, no, no. I said we're not going outside to go get it. She said, "Oh, just by the door." And I said, "No, we We can't leave here to go get your That's your responsibility." So what about the one She was She was waiting behind. She was behind. She said So I asked her if she wanted me to ring her up first. She never even got to register. She was saying that she was getting impatient cuz the girl in front was like you guys she walked up with her merchandise. But she said that you said go ahead just do it. Do what? her to just go No, I did not. I did not. said that she was asking to pay but you guys were saying there's only one register. There's only one register so I told the the the first one if she want to step aside so the so we can ring up that other customer. Yeah. And she says she start using um whatever word Yeah. um at me and I said ma'am we've been closed for um 5 10 minutes. Yeah. And I need you to cuz you know I can help take the hangers off and scan but she says you're effing this you're effing that. I want to I want to pay but I need you to go to the door to go get the and I go what? Cuz I've never heard any nobody ever asked me to go get their credit card from somebody else. Yeah. I said no. We're not letting anybody else in the when the store closes we don't let anybody else in. Right. I get that. Yeah. We don't want anybody to go out to the car to get anything. Yeah. Yeah. So saying she was getting frustrated with the girl up front and then They're they're together. Oh yeah. Yeah. Probably but right. No, she can say whatever cuz I have witness here. Okay. They're with each other. All right. I just want to make sure. So Yeah. We didn't tell them that we can I said um ma'am cuz she's she went down on her and she starts stuffing the One of the women tried to use the excuse that she needed to go to her car to get her card but the staff refused to let her leave and return. And I was standing right there. the one in the pink? one the short one. one. The one with the pink blonde hair. Yeah. The one that was um with the bigger bag outside. So she's good. I mean she's admitted to it right? Right. And the other one was standing behind her and I said ma'am do you want me to ring her ring you up while she's um deciding what she wants? Right. You know while she was stuffing her bag and she's um she says no she'll wait on whatever. I said well it's it's going on past 10. We're not supposed to have anybody here 30 minutes after we close. Yeah. Yeah, so there there were she wasn't doing anything. And I said, "Ma'am, we we open tomorrow. You can come back tomorrow. We can hold it. You can come back to You can come back tomorrow." "I have to leave on a plane tomorrow. I'm not coming back. And you're And she cursed the heck out of me." Okay. And she said, "I want to pay, but you have to go get my card." And I'm like, "No, I don't have to." "Well, send one of your girls to go get um get the card." I said, "No, we're not. We close." Right. Nobody pass that door coming in. And we got witnesses here. She concealed the slippers and the white pants inside of the fitting room. I was there because when she came out, the merchandise was gone, but she didn't She wasn't feeling sure about it, so I was like, "Okay, let's just let her That's what she concealed inside of it. Okay. She's putting it in her Yeah, she put it all in the pink bag. The red one? Uh yeah. Did she buy something, too? Yeah, so she paid for a couple of things and then with her merchandise. Check. Can I help you? Initially, she acts calm and denies having anything to do with it. She even tries to hide the fact that she has her car keys. Okay. What kind of car is it? All right. So, here's the deal. They have They have you on video surveillance putting other children's clothes into the car. So They what? Okay. Whose car is that? That was my aunt's car. Can they come bring it back? Otherwise, what's going to happen is they're going to be accessories after the fact. Okay. And what about all these other things? Oh, yeah. Yeah. Can they bring that stuff back? Can you tell them to come bring it back? We have to bring it back? Yes. Did you buy it? No. Otherwise, they're going to catch felony charges. You don't want that. You're really making this harder and harder on yourself. We asked you earlier where the keys are. And what did you say? I don't have any keys. Okay. So, where Where are your keys? I'm nervous. Come on, nice guy. Where's the keys? You have them on you. Nice. You just lost all the trust. Good job. Give me the keys. You're nervous. Give me the keys. You're like a pro at this. Where's the Where's the bathroom? She's putting her big person there, so I didn't want to bring it back. Yep, he's going to bring it right back. You're not kidding. Here. Why don't you stand? Huh? If the mall wants to, they can, but Once we get to the jail and once you get booked in, you can call. I don't know. I do not know. Nope, you lied to us. You lied to us. Okay, well Okay, even if you were nervous, you still lied to us. When you're nervous, that doesn't mean you lie. Okay. Like I said, once we get to the jail, once you get booked in, they will let you make a phone call. We'll see. I I'll tell you what. If we get to the jail and you do not pee in my car Okay, once we get to the jail and then after we let you use the bathroom, I will call her while we are in there. So, she can pick up the car. It's not going to be late. The jail is like less than 10 minutes away. Ultimately, the woman is charged with felony grand theft and later sentenced to 2 years of probation. Number one, police catch woman red-handed after $1,000 clothing theft. A woman in Ohio was caught shoplifting at a sporting goods store. Here's what happens when the officers are called to the scene. She started taking off, um, knocking into things. So, she was running away from Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. You know what I'm saying? I'm just wondering what made them call the police. I was out there trying on all the clothes. Cuz you're walking around with stuffed bags. This further complicates their legal troubles, as the officer explains. It's kind of an indicator. I mean, you had them. You had a thing of Timberlands. How do you conceal Timberlands? I just put those in the bag before they walked in the door. Well, you get what I'm saying. You had a bunch of stuff. All right. So, let me get this straight. It's coming up that you have a warrant for resisting arrest and you have a traffic warrant. Yeah, they already got me for that. They got me for that, put me in jail, and instantly they sent me off to Canton. Plus, you have a resisting arrest warrant out of Akron. That's what I'm talking about. They caught me down here in Akron, and then I stayed the night in Akron, and then they said they didn't want me. They took me out to Canton. Okay. Why did they tell you to release you? What?
