It starts like a simple grab and go, but these clueless thieves have no idea how quickly their luck is about to run out. Here are five cases when rookie shoplifters learn a hard lesson from the cops. Number five. Shoplifters go from confident to desperate in seconds. Police respond to a Target after reports of a man and woman caught trying to shoplift cameras. Officers approach the pair outside the store and begin standard procedure, checking for weapons and verifying their identities. Hey, what's up? What's up, sir? How are you? How you guys doing today? You doing all right? Take your hand out of your pocket for me, bud. You got any weapons on you or anything, guys? You do me a favor, sir, you can stand up and come over here. I'm just going to make sure you don't have any weapons on you, okay? Put your hands on the wall for me. This is a vape, my phone, and my wallet. Hold on, sir. Keep your hands on the wall. 10-26, 10-31 in the office. Fingers. Definitely going inside the bag. Weapon or anything like that? Ma'am, can you stand up and come over here for Put your bag down over here. Put your hands on the wall. All right, there's two officers present here. We both have our body cameras on, okay? I'm not going to touch you in any appropriate way. I'm going to use the back of my hand to brush your waistline, okay? I got it. I know there's nothing in there, so I'm not Have a seat for me. So, what's going on today? Um [Music] Somebody Well, hold on. Are we Can I talk to you outside for a second? I just want to confirm um if they're taking any of you guys on personal charges. So, I'm about to go get the dollar amount is 100 or not we prosecute, but all I'm verifying is from my recollection they're repeat offenders where they stole from another Target >> Okay. before coming here. So, I'm about to confirm with him now and if that's the case we're going to prosecute. >> Okay. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But I think the dollar amount if they each the dollar amount they each took is 100 we'll prosecute them regardless, so Okay. I'm going to find out right now. When we talk about it, just say like if they confirmed it at the other store, just be like, "Hey, I already confirmed that at the other store." That way I know it's fresh charges or if it's dollar amount over 100, just say what the amount is. If it's over 100, then I'll know that. That way we're not we're not going to play around or anything. The officer begins by reading the couple their rights before taking statements. All right, so I'm going to advise both of you of your Miranda rights, okay? Cuz I'm before I ask you any questions, so if I was taking you to jail, you'd be in handcuffs, okay? Before I ask you any questions because you have the right certain rights and these are not self-incriminating questions. I want you to understand what those rights are, okay? You both have the right to remain silent. Do you understand that? Yes? Yes? Okay. So, what am I doing here today? What's going on? So, basically somebody was going to give us some money to You get some cameras? Okay. How many cameras were you supposed to take and what kind? What kind of cameras were they? Okay. Who is this somebody? Like somebody you know, a friend? We did meet her maybe like 3 weeks ago. Okay. And she was looking for like those specific cameras. You guys live around here? Um I don't live around here. I live in Claremont. Okay. What are you doing all the way over here? Well, I we work over here, so we just we got off on our break and We were going to go get lunch and stuff, but Okay. So, what are you guys doing here? You guys are both young, right? You got jobs? Jobs? What do you do for work? Um right now we're doing um Okay. Is it going okay or What about you? Same thing? You guys together? Dating? Okay. How long you guys been dating each other? Is this the first time you've done anything like this or have you done something like this before? [Music] Okay. Um How old are you? And you are? Okay. You guys have IDs in your bags or on your person? Do you have your wallet on you? You can grab that for me. I don't have my ID on me. Okay. Um but I can give you my name and That's fine. Ma'am, I don't need that, okay? Do you guys drive here? Yes, sir. Whose car is it? Yours? Mine. Registered to you? Yes. Well, it's registered to my dad. When asked if they've done this before, they don't exactly deny it. Yes, the first Um Where did you Where did you guys say you were from originally? You're from Claremont. >> Yes, sir. So, you guys are dating, but you don't live together. Okay. And have you ever been involved in a shoplifting at all before? No, never. Never in a different store, just not caught? Um my ex, he got like he he was doing something like in a Walmart a couple years ago and like we both got in trouble with the trespass from the Walmart. Okay. But the charges got dropped, I believe. Okay. Can you do me a favor? Can you stand up and walk over here for me? Walk over here. Stand up for me. Try not to put your hands behind your back. You're being placed under arrest. Don't fight or try to run cuz you're going to get hurt, okay? For the shoplifting here, okay? Yeah, but if you try to conceal it, Listen, we're past the point of arguing about it, okay? I don't want you to catch additional charges. Let me get these double locked for you so they don't lock up on you, okay? Yeah, we'll we'll get we'll get all that. Sir. Is there anything that we can do? Can we pay it or something if we maybe get our family to pay for whatever we have to pay for? Problem is is that I have a daughter, man. I understand, okay? And I don't want you to think that this is your intentional or has anything to do with you personally. The problem is is that I don't think that this is the first thing that you guys have been involved in. All right? There there's some evidence out there that shows that you guys have been involved in multiple ones. There's only we we took one more thing from this store. Mhm. And that was it. >> What was it? A PSP. Okay. And then somebody the same girl told us to come get it. The man openly admits they once stole a PSP and got paid in cash. Okay. They paid us in cash for it. Okay. I can lead you to the But that's that's the problem, right? Is that your it's it's it's an often occurrence. So, Target from their perspective, their policy is, "Why are we going to let these people that are stealing from us keep stealing from us and then leaving?" You know what I mean? You can you can litigate it in court. You guys will have bonds. You're looking at misdemeanor charges right now. You guys are both out on bond? I thought I asked you if you'd been arrested and you said no. Not for this. You guys are both out on bond. You? Um yeah. Do you have any money that I know about in your bra area or underwear cuz they will find it at the jail. I'm not going to search you, but Why would you guys be doing this out on bond? You guys know even a second-degree misdemeanor will revoke your bond on your first charges. And you So, why would you be doing this? Unfortunately not, okay? You guys are both under arrest right now. All right? I'm going to try to see as far as charges to make sure you don't get charged with anything additional you're not supposed to. And uh I'll I'll let you make any phone calls you need to make, but yeah, you guys are under arrest, okay? [Music] We're not going to get out? This stuff you can't take. What is this? It's candy. What kind of candy is it? Baby bottle pop. Got them. Turn around. As I was saying, because of the situation that you're in, you know, you you you guys are going to go to jail for these charges, okay? Um like I said, I'll help you try to arrange everything you can. I don't want you to think it's personal and I don't want to argue with it cuz I don't want to give you some sense of false hope that you're being let go today. You will have a bond. It doesn't look like you're out Are you Are you Never mind, you're still out on bond. And then yeah, you guys So, you guys most likely will not have bonds for your first one until you go to first appearance. Then they'll set a bond based on the the previous bond. They'll look at the severity of the charges. You're looking at misdemeanor charges. What were they What was the amount? Uh individually they're They were both They're all like I mean Total combined was $599.97. Yeah, so you're still misdemeanor, luckily for you. All right, so the judge might take that into consideration. With the pressure mounting, they panic, offering to pay and smooth things over. But by now, it's out of their hands. But Oh, I'm so sorry, man. But that's where we're at right now. You know what I mean? 10-4, man. 10-15 on a whiskey mic in a hotel talk shop. In a hotel or a correction talk talk shop. My apologies. Yeah, that's different. We could have gave you like a notice to appears like that, but because you're out on bond, it's we have to take you. Yeah, so it doesn't matter. Yeah, just the bond status. Let me just add his ID. Let me find it for you. I'm sorry. You're asking like what the process would be? Well, depending on when we get in, there's two first appearances during the day, one at 8:00 a.m. and one at 2:00 p.m. Depending on when you get in the jail, you might make the 2:00 p.m. Probably not if I'm being honest with you. Uh you'll see the jail first thing tomorrow or see the judge first thing tomorrow morning. You will have preset bonds for our charges, but they'll revoke your bond based on the previous charges. No matter what? No matter what. It's like instant like that. If you're out on bond, right? There's bond stipulations like don't occur any new trap or uh law violations. That's one of them. You violate a new law. So, the judge will have to reset your bonds based on if he sees fit to give you a bond um based on the violation. With processing done, officers secure the suspects' belongings and arrange transport to jail. Their car is left behind since it's legally parked with their items locked safely inside. How's it work with their car? Is it going to get towed or can they keep it here? Yeah. Okay. So, we'll leave your car. Yeah. So, if we if we detect detect there's nothing in here, we'll go to your vehicle before we leave. We'll lock your stuff inside of your vehicle besides your wallet, stuff like that. >> I don't have my wallet. Yeah, but larger bags like this this is the jail kind of frowns upon you guys taking that into a jail, okay? So, we'll swing by your car and drop it in there and lock it up. Now, before I search your bags, is there anything inside the bag that I need to know about? This is the part where I have discretion to charge you or not to charge you, okay? >> thing I might have in my bag is aluminum aluminum Okay, just aluminum foil? All right, cool. Can I grab my phone? That's my phone. That's your phone right here? Yep, I will grab that phone. And then there's my keys right here. Yep, we're going to give you the keys here. The other officer is going to transport him. Okay, and then we'll make sure that your property goes in your car, okay? So, the keys will be taken out of the property. Well, we're going to search it outside. Because All right, no possible 195. Um as far as the property who are we leaving this with so they can get back in the car? Like the large bag and stuff. We're taking the person, the phone. The other recruit. >> Okay. So, we'll leave this with them. >> Yeah. All right, how are you? Um your keys are going to come with you to the jail later, okay? Go ahead, lead the way. Sorry, I don't know where I'm going. All right. You want to get inside the car? Okay. For sure nothing in your bra area, underwear area? We're not going to recover it, but just let me know now that way I can tell the jail staff to get it. >> No, I don't have anything. Okay, have a seat for me, okay? What's up? Um for my bag in my my truck like it'll like they're not going to tow it for No, they just told us that. Yeah, they're not going to tow it. They're not going to tow it? Okay. Yeah, they're going to leave it there. So, you'll be able to come pick it up. >> be able to tell the other officer that they could put the like my bags in the trunk? >> Yeah. Yeah, I'm going to search it first and then we'll we'll put it in the trunk. Okay. All right, watch your feet. Officers then ask a few more questions to wrap up the report. Question. How long have you been with your boyfriend? What's his name? Christopher. Christopher? I've been with him for about like 7 months or 8 months. Okay. Before you guys met, were you alone? I just Hello. Okay, how long was the relationship? I mean um I think I don't know if he was lying at first to me, but I wouldn't have done anything like that. Are you Do you think you're addicted to it? I don't think so. Yeah. Right there behind that gold Gold SUV. There's a white Ford SUV. Um What do you know about this lady that Um I'm pretty sure that's not her real name. Like I know like you know people use like a like fake names, but like from what I know her as her name is fake name. She's a like an older Um She's usually always on OBT. Like I don't know hotel some like uh some type of hotel. Um She's never at the same spot. Um Okay. What'd you ask her? All right, man. Wish you the best, man. Hope things get better for you, man. All right, this way. Got anything on you that's going to stick us, poke us? Place this down. Hold this for a second. Finally, the male suspect is searched and secured in the vehicle. All right, I'm going to ask ask everyone this, but do you have anything on you that you're going to bring to the jail cuz if you do that ain't finds. If you do it's an additional charge, introducing contraband. Okay. All right, have a seat. [Music] And that's the price you pay when you're already on bond and still try to shoplift. Number four. When you don't pay and try to make it the cashier's problem. Police respond to a Dollar General after staff reported a woman shoplifted a bag of chips. When officers arrive, the suspect claimed she left because the cashier tried to assault her. Here's how things play out. Which one? Him? Which one? Which one? Which one of them? Him, what's up? Okay. The bag of chips that she's eating, she walked out of the store without paying for. Um she assaulted me and I left cuz she tried to assault me. It was out of my aggression. Nope. Who was it? Put her on the ground. Hands up. All right, is there anything in this we need to know about? >> I don't know. Anything else that we got to get this off of her? [Music] No, I don't think so. All right. We'll take the bag in a second once we get her loaded up. You want to take care of that? I'll get her all loaded up. Wait, Liz, just do a quick pat down. Anything on you we need to know about? No. Black ma'am, ma'am. Okay. Anything on you we need to know about? Any knives, anything like that? Anything sharp? Yeah, no, we all going to go to jail. Thank you. Thank you. Yes, she got her. Thank you. Yeah. Thank you. Yeah. Thank you. Yes, and they are too. >> Yeah. Thank you. And I walk with God every night. And I walk with God every night and no evil. I got 3 months, you guys going to have years. I got 3 months for a dollar, you guys going to have years. If they cut me, they will cut them. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you, that's fine. Thank you. Officers thoroughly search both her and her belongings before moving forward. Instead of showing remorse, she carries herself with arrogance as if she hadn't just been caught red-handed. Thank you for going by. Thank you. Is there anything inside of your hat? No, probably Thank you. Anything inside of the hat? No, no hat. Thank you. You want this way? Oh, this way? I'll grab it all up. Whoa, stop. >> Oh, I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Let's go. Come on, let's go. Whoa. Ma'am. Thank you. You want to load on this side? She already searched her? Yep. Yeah, that's fine. Yeah. All right, I'm going to grab her stuff. Yeah, let me just go through it. You got that water. [Music] Let me just go through it. Let me just go through it. Make sure everything's good in it. [Music] With her secured in the patrol car, officers returned to the store to get the cashier's account of events. Here. I'm trying to locate it. I don't know. Cuz it happened at my register. So, what happened? Okay, she comes in, goes shopping. I've never had a problem with this girl. Like what? Miss I don't know, she's Where's your Where's your I'm assuming that she's talking about this to check the price. Cuz that's how we were heard that, you know. Well, the next thing I know, she's like, "You're sick. You're sick. You're sick. I'm not You're not touching my stuff. You're sick." And she goes to reach over my register and I block her. And now, if she wants to call that assault, so be it. Don't reach over my register. That's not not assault. And then what happened? And then she proceeds to walk out the store. I was like, "If you walk out that store, I'm calling the police. You're going to go to jail for shoplifting." Okay, cuz she had the chips. >> Cuz she had the chips. Okay. And she was going to pay for them. Or she was at least at the register asking you for >> Yeah. the gun. And then saying something about you're sick and Yeah. >> And then she just took them and walked out. Pretty much. This is her. The line wasn't ever really that long. >> She's one person. Yeah. >> Yeah. I was helping this lady right here cuz Roberta had an issue with the digital coupons thing. She was the only one there. But when When I got done with her, I grab I told her to come on now. I'll wait on you, you know. You did on the other one? Yeah, I'm on the far side over here, by the way. I think you have a better view. This is the only camera that shows that area. The car ride to jail is filled with contradictions as she rattles off excuses and tries to justify her actions. You sure are. You sure are. We're not the ones that press charges, they are. [Music] Yeah, you'll be just fine. We're going to transfer you to another car. The primary officer that take you to jail. Sure are. Shoplifting. All right. Oh, did she now? Okay. All right. Well, the officer is doing the Sure. Sure. Yeah. We're going to get in the next car. Okay, awesome. Excuse me. I think you know where you want me to go. Thank you. Show them the way we're going. You want to step ahead? Okay, we're going straight ahead. Can you not hold me so roughly, please? Thank you. Thank you. We're going to go to a different car. You want to go on which side? On the other side. Awesome. Thank you. Thank you. No problem. Okay, do we go this way? All right, no answer. And you guys don't understand I can't understand. Okay. Um this is too small. This is smaller than the other one. How How do I >> car. Get in. Yeah, I don't understand. It's too small. >> You'll figure it out. You just sit sideways. >> Okay, so can you give me Can you let me go so I can go >> Yep, go right ahead. >> Okay, awesome. Thank you. This is dangerous. It's not making any sense. Okay. Bye. Okay, that's perfect. Thank you. Can I grab this again? Bye. Hold it up. Yeah, go ahead. Thank you. I can't even fit in there. Thank you. Thank you. Yeah, sure. This is hurting. Thank you. Thank you. Let me help you out. Bye. Thank you. Bye. Officers don't let it derail them and continue with the arrest process. Thank you. Yeah, I'll I'll do I'll take care of all of it. Thank you. Stop. Something about an argument. Okay, so I'm going to read this to you. Can you just say yes or no out loud? You have the right to remain silent, do you understand? Yes. Anything you say may be used against you. Do you understand? >> Do you understand? >> Yes, do you understand that? You have the right to talk to a lawyer before and during questioning, do you understand? Do you understand? Okay, You have the right to talk to a lawyer before and during questioning, do you understand? Yes. This is This is not really making any sense. If you cannot afford a lawyer and want one, one will be provided for you before questioning by the officers, do you understand? >> Yes, ma'am. >> All right, has anyone threatened you or promised you to get you anything to get you to talk to me? I'm sorry? Has anyone threatened you or promised you anything No, you guys are not making any sense. All this on your on your body is not making any sense. Has anyone threatened you or promised you anything to get you to talk to me? What What are you talking about? I don't understand that. >> threatened you or promised anything to you for you to talk to me? >> Um I I don't understand what that means, but >> Has anybody threatened you or promised you anything so you can talk to me? >> to say no now, but I do not understand completely what that means. So when I understand what that means, it doesn't matter. I'm trying to >> I guess that's no. I said no, I don't understand, but I said no. It doesn't matter. Has anybody threatened you? >> said no. It doesn't matter here cuz you're not real police anyway. Thank you. So what happened? What do you talk about? I just said no. >> What happened at Dollar General? Um what happened is I was in the line I was in the line waiting in the line to buy something. Yes, I had food in my bag. I had food in my bag. And what happened when I had food in my bag, I was going to steal but I did not steal. I put it down. I put it there. But I could have paid for it, too. And I was actually I'll be be honest, I was going to pay for it. That's why it wasn't funny. Yeah, I was going to pay I was going to pay for it. I changed my mind. I was going to steal but I didn't. So I was going to pay for it. You did not steal. Uh no, I I didn't steal. >> You walked out the store without paying. Thank you. And when I told them, let me tell the truth. Okay. So what happened was I was thinking about stealing, but I did not do it. So what happened was I was thinking about stealing. When pressed for her explanation, she flatly denied shoplifting, instead claiming she was just being careful about germs and that the situation was overblown. I had a dollar fifty vanilla cream. Um I have another fifty vanilla cream uh cookies. I had a a dollar sixty-five of a Pepsi. And I had two chips. So what happened I was going to steal but I changed my mind. So what I did, I put it down. And I went and I went and go pay for the potato chips. Yeah, for the potato chips. So when I went and I put it down, I changed They got mad cuz I did not want to steal. So they got angry when I was in the line and told me to move over. They told me to move over to the next line. And when I told her I did not want her touching my food cuz she is she is unhealthy. She wanted to grab me by my hand and scratch me on my hand. >> She didn't grab you. I saw the video. What happened was I just told you. So what I did was Thank you. And what I did was I told her I didn't want her to touch my thing and when she tried to grab when she when I told her I let me just help her out so she doesn't go to jail. And when I told her that, she went and went and grabbed me. Mhm. Thank you. Went and grabbed me. And I said I'm leaving cuz she she was too aggressive. It's only a dollar. It's only a dollar. Yes. >> That still doesn't give you a right to take the chips without paying for them. Um if you if you are She Look how she ran from behind Look how she ran from behind the register trying to attack me. You're stealing. It's a dollar. It doesn't matter. >> I was I could pay I have a dollar in my bag. I have food stamps. What are they talking Why didn't you pay for it? If you didn't like her, you could have went back to the line and went to the other female. She was trying to help you out. >> Uh no, she ran she ran across the street for a dollar. All she had to do was call you and tell you tell you where I went. She should not be running running after me. >> she did. She told us. Yeah, she ran after. Who runs after She even accuses the cashier of escalating the situation by chasing her. She has her her employment which Yeah, who runs after somebody for a dollar? It doesn't matter. >> any sense. It's just It's just chips, right? Even if it is, it's still something you need to pay for. Um I have no problem paying for it. Do you want to go back over there and pay for it? >> No, it's too If you had an issue with her touching your food, you could have dropped the chips and gone out left the store. You didn't have to take them with you. >> Um if she's It's I I have no problem in my head I said I have no problem paying for it. You guys listen to my head, too. I said yes, I'm I'm not going to sit there and let her attack me. She almost scratched me on my hand. >> Okay, who's who's sick? You have no You have no right to put your hand behind the register. She blocked your hand. >> if she's trying to sicken me, what Why if I'm trying to eat food, why would I let her sicken >> in a plastic bag. You know how many people touched that food before No, I do not care. It doesn't make any sense. Regardless, that's not an excuse to take chips. If you didn't like her, you could have went back to the other line to the other female. Thank you. Bye. She's eventually charged with petty theft. Number three, shoplifting at Walmart ends with a ride in the back of a cop car. Police are called to a Walmart after staff report a woman shoplifting. Here's what happens next. Hi. Oh, hey, what up? Did you tell them where you were yet? No. Okay. It's um 15. Our suspect will be Janay. Stand by on birthday. Hey, when were you born, Janay? Uh All right. I mean, Y'all don't have me in the >> giving me her birthday, but she is in locals if you can just check her. What'd you say? Y'all can look me up in the system. I'm saying where you're going to get into the jail. Well, I got you. You're a pretty recognizable person. Um all right. Then why ask me for my birthday if I'm already in the system? Well, it makes it easier. What happened today? I stole some food. That's what happened. What'd you steal? Food. What like what specifically? Food. The kind that you eat. Oh, okay. Careful. All right, you guys got You guys want to pursue charges and stuff? Yes, we How much is it? Well, it's a lot more than just food, so the clothes she's wearing are ours. Okay. And then we didn't even want to We didn't feel comfortable going through that cuz that car out there is hers. Mhm. I wear these at normal actually. Normal I wear the same type of clothes at their Walmart. And it's more of our stuff in there. We didn't feel comfortable going in. What? It's covered in blood. Or urine or something. What's up? No, there's the clothes that were already in my bag. Those were already mine to begin with. Hello. I am homeless. That's why they smell. Yeah. All right. So, those clothes that were already in there is because I just started my period. So, that's why there's blood on there. Yeah. So, all those other clothes in there, those are mine. All right. And the clothes you have on right now are from here? >> from normal. Yes. From normal Walmart or here? Normal. I don't know how many how many times I have to repeat myself. Normal, normal, normal. All right. With the staff's help, officers track down and collect the stolen items. Uh yeah, but she's meeting with somebody. She's what? She's meeting with somebody. Okay. So, you guys got video of her taking the stuff today? Yeah. >> Do you know how much approximately it would be? Um I think it's under Oh, yeah. Under 300. All right. You You don't I mean, if you guys aren't super concerned with the bloody clothes, we aren't either. Yeah, no, it's fine. But, I think the clothes Yeah, yeah, yeah. All right. Okay. So, she came in wearing a the jack whatever outfit costume or pajamas or whatever that are on the top of the car. Okay. Yeah, but then I got to step out so that I could change. Oh, okay. [Music] Retail thefts. Those clothes are stolen. There's some stolen items here. Yeah. So, we got to get her out of those clothes and back into those clothes. Cuz those are her clothes. Probably stolen, too, but at least you came in here with them. [Music] The costume I came in with has a bus pass in it. Please So, that was already mine. >> What'd you say? There's a bus pass in the costume I came in with. Okay. It was in my pocket. So, that was already mine. The bus pass? And the costume I came in wearing. Okay. That's why there's blood on it. That's why there's my bus pass in it. Yeah, did you have like a switch or anything? Yes. I just told you. I don't know how many times I have to repeat myself. All those clothes that were in there Yeah, we're going Because I keep You have to repeat myself. All right, stand up. Stand up. Stand up. I'm repeating myself now. You see how that works? Stand up, Janay. For what? You're being arrested for retail theft. [Music] Look at Am I actually getting locked Can you pull my shirt up cuz I'll go naked without that on. There you go. Thank you.
