What happens when kids need saving not from strangers but from their own parents? Here are five cases when cops rescue kids from evil parents. Number five, dad's Walmart run ends with police called for toddler left in car. Walmart employees contact authorities after a customer notices a toddler alone inside an unlocked car in the parking lot. Officers and medics arrived to find a 16-month-old girl in a car seat, appearing still and unresponsive. >> So, um, basically, we got informed by another, uh, customer that there's a baby. The door is unlocked on the back side, unattended. Nobody there like >> said they uh were informed by a customer that they saw a kid in the car without anyone else. Um yeah, the kid's awake or she's sleeping, but I uh rubbed her chest. She started moving. >> Who uh is the manager? >> We all are. >> All of us. Okay. Yeah, let me call you back. I got EMT here. I got to call you back. Bye. >> Um, >> so basically I got a call from my front end uh associate saying that there was a customer claimed that there was a baby in a car unattended. The customer was here but and decided to leave. Um, then when we came out to address the situation, I couldn't tell if there was a baby in there or not. So obviously I opened the door and saw that the baby was in there, but the baby's been in one piece. So basically as you found her is pretty much what we've been doing is just standing making sure nobody comes and adjusts or anything. So the baby but the baby's just been like that literally squeeze. >> Have y'all seen anyone come by the car? Nothing like that. >> No, we came directly at school in the front. >> There's a >> Huh? >> We can pull the video. >> Yeah, we can pull it and make sure whatever we need. >> Do you have your ID with you? >> It's in the >> It's inside. What's your first name? >> Hey, what's up guys? What's going on? >> What you got? >> Uh store said that they had a customer come inside tell them that they um said that they saw a kid unattended in the car. Um this front end and all the store managers end up coming out here. They walk up to the car, see if the car is unattended. No customer, nothing like that around. Signal 44 is in the car seats. >> Medics recommend transporting the child to the hospital for a full evaluation. Though not in immediate danger, she appears lethargic and under the weather, which raises concerns. >> They said that the car was unlocked. They didn't open it or anything like that. When I got here, um >> signal41. >> Oh, sorry. It's a juvenile for us. >> Okay. Okay. >> Um when I got here, she was in the car seat. Didn't appear like she was moving or anything. So, I opened the door, rubbed her chest, then she started to move around. Medics got here, they pulled her out, and she's in there checking vitals now. >> Yeah. I'm talking to my guys now. He said they're a little she's a little lethargic. Um, but she could also be a little sleepy girl. So, we're trying to figure that out. >> She also She's got like a scrape on her knee. >> Did uh anybody come out and claim vehicle or kid? >> Not yet. >> Okay. I'm sure they're inside right now making a request for the the PA. >> So, I have um their loss prevention is looking at the camera to see if they can see anyone exit the car. >> Was that mom? >> No. [Applause] >> Anybody come up yet? >> N assessing this kid. Yeah, she's she's very young, more than 2 years old. Um he's saying that for his assessment looks like she has a pretty nasty diaper that has not been changed. She's got dirt and scrapes all over her. Um she also seems like she's sick. He wants to take her to the hospital to get evaluated. Um and given the state that she's been left in and the fact that she's left alone, um he's he's willing to take off. But as far as the legality of it, having that conversation with you guys right now. >> Yeah. Give me one second. Lieutenant Greg, how you doing? Doing good, sir. >> So, where we stand right now is obviously no one's came out to claim this young lady. My medic is assessing the she's like old. Don't have an exact age on her, but she's really young. >> For the assessment, she looks like she has a pretty stale, old dirty diaper on. She's pretty dirty herself from head to toe. >> Got a few scrapes and bruises on her. Um, he wants to transport her to the hospital to get evaluated by a physician. And given the state that she was left in, he's ready to take off right now. But as far as the legality of it, again, you >> Okay, so let me short for legality. Aside from all those things, which I'm not saying they're right, but they're not immediate threat to her health. Is there anything he's seeing, fever, anything like that? >> As of right now, we're not seeing any immediate life. >> Moments later, officers locate the father and begin questioning him. >> You have your ID, you name. >> Is she in there? She's in the ambulance. >> What was the issue? Cuz he just left and >> came in. So, she was sleeping. He left and came in to get me. She was still sleeping. But he So, he was in the car with her and then he left and I'm in the middle of checking out. >> Okay. What time did you get here? >> 30 minutes ago. >> Okay. So, you you're in the car with your sister. >> Okay. And you got out of the car. >> She knows she should have done that. How old are you, buddy? >> There's the video. >> And you watched it. >> I did. They both exited. >> And that's what I just confirmed with him cuz I didn't want to tip this guy off. >> Mhm. >> Said, "Yeah, they both exit at the same time." So, >> but if he did leave him and the other kid in the car at the same time, he's still >> he's got no way to communicate, right? >> That's why he ran into >> Yeah. So, This a family member. >> That's dad. >> Why is my baby sister in my >> Well, because we was concerned about her. >> We wanted to store 20 minutes. He's been in the car the whole time. >> Mhm. You know, she not supposed to be left in there even with him cuz he underage also. So, >> so you have to be 18. >> No, but you got to be like a reasonable age. He's very smart. He just started answer. I just want to get the groceries. I got three of us. >> Mhm. >> Sir. >> Yes, sir. >> Are you the father? >> Yes, sir. >> So, this is where we stand right now, sir. >> Okay. Is she also here? >> Yes. So, just so you're aware for our assessment, while we're not identifying any life threats, she doesn't look like she's >> He explains that the child likely appeared lethargic simply because of being tired from earlier activities. Even so, officers decide a hospital visit is the safest option. >> It looks like something might be going on and all we're concerned about is her wellbeing. Now, obviously, we're very limited on what we can see, but we strongly suggest that she go to the doctor, get evaluated, go to the hospital, be evaluated by a physician, and if you don't find anything, then from there, she'll be mentally cleared. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. That's your sisters. We're getting the life vest. We were on the paddle board swimming all day, but she's not sick. Medic, if you can hear you, I just put on You got to stay with me. >> All right. Bye. Why do I have to stay with you? >> Because we doing an investigation right now. So, you just have to stay with me. It's not that you're in trouble or nothing. You just have to stay with me. >> What are they saying? >> I don't know. >> I don't know. >> Just what the paramedics told you. They people called in because they was concerned because they seen your door in the vehicle by that. That's all. And we got here, they got her. So, of course, he evaluated her. Then that's here where we are now. Do you want to take custody of the kids? >> I will. >> Okay. Firey says the little one needs to go to the hospital and get checked out. >> Okay. >> Are you okay with that? >> Um, yeah, that's fine. >> Or put me on the phone with mom and I'll explain it to her. And she >> She knows. She knows. And she said that she would take them. >> Well, but I want to make sure they get there, so I'd rather they do it and they'd be more comfortable doing it with some of the fire. No, fire rescue. Oh, >> with some of the findings they've got. >> Oh, let me call her. >> All right, >> young man. Let's go over here and talk to your aunt. Okay, >> you stay here with her. All right. >> Have you morizized them? >> I have it. >> All right. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can will be used against you in a court of law. You understand each of these rights I've explained to you? >> Yes. >> Having these in mind, do you wish to speak to me? >> Okay. Thank you. Once his Miranda writes are read, officers pressed the father for his statement. >> Why are we all out here in the parking lot of Walmart tonight? >> Because I left my son and my daughter in the car while I went in there to do some shopping and my son came in there. Did he get me? >> How long were you in there before your son came and got you? >> 5 10 years. >> What time did he finally find you in the store? About >> um Gosh. What time did he get here? 920. Maybe 9 >> 9:20 you said. >> Yeah. >> So he probably 9:30 9:35. >> Okay. How about if we back up to when this all started and you start being honest with me. >> I am. >> No, you're not. Cuz I've got you on video. I know what the time frame is. >> And it is not your time frame. >> So why don't you start by telling me the truth and read through it again? Well, then I'm don't know the exact time. What time was it? >> I I don't have to tell you. You tell me what time it was. You left two children unattended in a car. I would know exactly what time I did it, how quick, how long it took me to get back out here. And you're telling me it took you at least 20 minutes after your son found you? >> I was in the store 30, 35 minutes total. >> Let's go with 40 minutes. Okay. >> And your son was not in the car? Your son went in the car with you? or went into the store with you. >> I know this for a fact. >> Yeah. My son came into the store with >> with you when you went in. >> Correct. >> In fact, when you came back out to the car, you bailed on your son, left him in the store. He didn't know where you were for a couple of minutes. >> When they I said told him to come on and he was in the toy aisle where leaving >> and he was wandering around cuz you'd already made your way out here. >> Told him to >> Did he Was he on your heels? >> No. You left him in a Walmart unattended, even for 2 minutes. That's all it takes for somebody to snatch him. >> I'm scared to death. >> Yeah, you should be. >> They make sure he knows that even a short time in a car can put a child's life in danger. >> And I ran and he's over here doing push-ups and jumping on this car. I have three children. It It's hard to deal with. >> Yeah, raising kids is hard. I get that. >> And I have one that's healthy. >> But let let me tell you something, okay? You went in the store at about 953. Yes. >> 953. >> 853. I'm sorry. >> Okay. >> All right. That about right. >> I'm listening. >> Your son went in the store with you, right? >> Yes. >> You were in there for 35 to 40 minutes before you heard a page to come back out to your car, right? >> And I came right out. Yes, sir. >> The whole time you were in the store with your son? >> Yes. >> The whole time your daughter's out here in the car unattended? Correct. >> Correct. >> Car is not locked. Correct. >> Car was not locked. >> Did you know it was not unlocked? >> No. >> You thought you locked it? >> Yes. >> Okay. >> Cuz we had a we had a light issue in the back. >> Okay. >> So, you're telling me that you were in the store for 35 to 40 minutes with your son with your daughter out here in the car. >> She was asleep in the car. >> Was and nobody was watching her >> on the water all day. Nobody was watching her >> except for >> except for the managers and when they became aware of this stood around this car for 30 minutes watching her to make sure nothing happened because you were in the store. >> Do we see a problem here? >> I can't lose custody. >> Do you do I Custody is not your problem right now. Do you see where this is going? >> Set your cup on the truck. You're under arrest. I ask why I'm under arrest for what? >> Because you left your child in an unattended car for 40 minutes. >> Still, he pushes back, questioning the reason for his arrest as he's cuffed. >> The fact that you still don't know why you're going to jail is crazy. >> What is the charge? >> Child neglect. >> Child neglect. Let's see. >> My bad. >> You ever been arrested before? >> Yeah. >> And Florida? >> Uh, yes. >> Okay. For what? >> It was misdemeanor possession charge. >> Okay. What about in South Carolina >> for what? >> Um, violation >> of just a matter. >> So, you're I just want to make sure you're understanding why this is happening, right? >> Yeah. Never. Um, I do understand, but I just thought to let her sleep, she's exhausted. >> But you you understand the problem with that, right? >> Yes. But I just never think something would happen. >> But that's that's the problem is I've seen a ton of people think nothing's going to happen. Next thing you know, they're calling us because they can't find their child for little reasons like this. Okay. So, he got the keys on him. They in >> Do you have the keys to the car? >> Uh, >> are they still in the car? Cuz you didn't have any in your pockets. >> They're still in the car. >> They still in the car. >> They're still in the car. >> What? >> The keys are in the car. >> Still in there. >> Is it okay if she takes them? >> Is it okay if she takes the keys to the car? Your your uh sister-in-law watch. >> I got >> You won't even talk. We already told you what's going on tonight. >> I know, but still talk to somebody. >> No, we already talked to you. The next step is you going to talk to the judge in the morning. >> He's told they'll be held without bond until the first court appearance. Soon after, another family member arrives to take custody of the children. >> Did my partner already tell you you going to be without bond tonight? So you >> Well, you definitely have to see a judge in the morning. >> All right. >> The judge will, you know, determine your boy when you go to first appearance. That's normally around 8 9:00. Thomas is his dad, right? >> Right. >> Biological dad. >> Okay. All right. He abandoned her in the car. He was in the store for over 40 minutes with her in the car by herself. >> That's not good. So, he's going to be going to jail tonight and she's got she's in light of everything, the way she's acting, um, >> they're not comfortable releasing her without a trip to the hospital to get checked out. Maybe it'll be nothing. Hopefully, maybe there's something there, but she has not moved around much the entire time we've been here. Not the way, you know, all this activity. So, what is it? >> She should be moving around and watching all the flash like she's not. >> Can I see her? >> It's going to be up to them. Since you're not, Mom, I don't know. But let me check. >> How much do you know what happened? >> Um, I was on the phone when it was going on. >> Okay. So, this is what happened. Okay. Your husband pulled up here at 8:50. Your husband and I exited the car. They went into the store. Your daughter was left in the car. Vehicle was off. Front window was rolled down halfway. Car was unlocked. They did not come back out to the vehicle for almost an hour. It took us going inside making an overhead page for the husband of your name to come outside to his vehicle. At which time he ran he ran out of the store not right behind comes running about 15 seconds after he exited the store and got here running across the street where vehicles were coming on. So >> the mother is informed about everything that happened with her child and husband. >> Your daughter who is 16 months old in a car unattended by herself with the car unlocked where anyone could have came up and taken her out. He's getting arrested for child neglect. Okay. >> Okay. >> Your daughter was taken to Advent Healthcare in downtown Ogallo. >> Okay. um medics felt the need that she needed to go based off of all of their I'm not a medic so I don't really I can't evaluate a child based on that um but they felt that she needed to go >> okay >> um I'm just going to be upfront with you okay because of the situation and the charge and all that has to be notified okay um from my understanding they're living with you mom or your her mom okay grandma grandma. >> Okay. Um >> grandma >> and Levi are living at y'all. Okay. >> Um so I have that address. Um that's the address I'm going provide to them. Um right now he's going to be held without a bond. Okay. Um until first appearance, they'll go in and then see to the judge and all that point. Okay. >> Okay. >> Um go to advent. >> Do you know the morning? Okay. >> Do you have more information about her? What were they saying? >> So, what I saw when I got here, um, she was in the car, was quote unquote sleeping. She wasn't moving. So, I opened the car, started rubbing her chest. It took a little bit, and then she started to move. Um, they came, got her out of the car, and started checking her vitals. Uh, she has a couple scrapes on her. She's pretty dirty. >> Um, >> I heard y'all were at the river. Yes. I assume. Um, so they were looking at her vitals. It seemed like she was coming down with a a sickness of some sort. >> I think she's teething. >> Okay. Yeah. So, um, from what I understood there, her vitals weren't terrible. >> Officers then ensure the child is seen by medical professionals and alert the Department of Children and Families due to the circumstances. >> Um, but the longer they were waiting, they were just getting more concerned. >> Okay. Okay. >> So, they wanted to to make sure she could get checked out by a physician cuz they can only >> do so much in a ambulance here. >> She's not very um >> I told them that she wasn't good. >> She doesn't like many other people. >> Um Okay. So, is he Can I speak with Tom? >> Mhm. >> Is he want to hug him? >> Yeah. Okay. Wow. [Music] Hello. >> Hello. >> Hey. So, you're being trespassed from the property. Uh, you cannot come back onto this property. Uh, if you come back on this property, you county will be notified and you will be arrested for violation of the trespass. And there's trespasses for a lifetime at this location. You cannot be in a car with somebody waiting in the parking lot at all. >> You understand that? >> Yeah. Okay. >> All right. Thank you. >> Who's that? >> It's the manager of the store. >> Oh, really? >> Okay. All right. We're going to get going. >> Oh, you don't have any water or nothing, right? >> Huh? >> You don't have any water? Not right now. When you get to the jail, they need to get you something. >> Oh god. >> Police arrest the father on charges of child neglect before being taken to jail. The man is trespassed from the Walmart property for life. Number four. Things get serious after toddler found wandering hotel. Police in Panama City respond to a call about a 2-year-old found wandering alone in a hotel hallway. The child had been seen crying and walking near the elevators for nearly an hour before staff alerted authorities. Here's what happens next. >> Any idea what roomies belong to? >> I have no idea. My um boss just he was upstairs coming out. He said he seen little baby up there. >> Which floor? >> On the seventh floor. So when I went up there, he was just crying. >> He's all mad. Why you old mad? It's okay. It's okay. So, we are still on the second floor. >> Yep. He was on the second floor. I mean, I hate it cuz I mean I don't know who it is cuz like I said, they came the weekends. I had checked nobody that had a >> baby. He think >> we go walk the second floor and we're probably going to find a room over somebody sleeping. >> Well, well, and the thing is all the doors was closed and I didn't I wouldn't even think this baby to open the door. It doesn't take much for the but I was going to say it don't >> um when I work at the it's been about what time was he calling home? >> It's been about what 40 go when you go upstairs come out the elevator go to your right to your right. >> Okay. >> You who found the kid >> the ball. >> You have nothing to do with it. No. >> Okay. Up and down this way. Guess what? I'm going to start at 2,200. Do we know if every room is occupied? >> Uh, no. This side, some of the rooms are occupied. I will open the door. >> Yeah. >> Hello. >> Hello. Police department. >> Uh, this room is occupied, but nobody >> nobody is here. >> Hello, police department. Police department. Hello. Hello. He's not occupied. This room is occupied. >> Second floor. Take a right as you come up the stairs. He was found down here, but I don't know if he's necessarily from here. We're checking each room. Hello, police department. Hello. Hello. Are you missing a baby? >> Hello, sir. >> You don't have a small boy? >> Yeah. >> Oh, no. That's my friend sleeping. >> It's right here. He is downstairs. >> He's downstairs. >> You got some shoes on and come down. The woman who insists she isn't the child's mother is questioned by the police. >> Don't forget your room key so you can get back in. >> That's why on the book they learn quick. Thank you. >> Yeah. Little man probably got a hold of the door handle. They found him kind of wandering around right here and he's been gone for about 30 minutes. They said 40 minutes. You got your ID by hand. Can you grab it real quick? >> I should have said that the first time. Sorry. >> My brother, >> you know your >> That's fine. We'll get your information. >> He's not your child. >> No, he's not my child. My friends, I can still >> Okay. We ain't going to cancel Christmas. She'll just get you get some info in >> girl. You babysitting on the bedside. [Music] She didn't have her ID, so she'll have to give you her her info. >> Date of birth. >> 04602. >> What's the kid name? >> Messiah. >> Messiah. SI How old is it? >> Whose kid is it? >> Um, my friend. >> Where's Lia? >> She took a cab. You have her phone number. >> As the conversation continues, officers discover she has an active warrant for her arrest. >> Our Snapchat officer a she's given a date of birth of 4162, but I got her in mobile with 4163. So, um, she's staying out of She's staying out of Florida 23. >> Looks like mobile warrant has her an active one for I think BOP. >> You deal with a kid. You got arrest warrant. >> You got a warrant. >> Uh, fraud, I believe. >> Mhm. >> Your date of birth in 2003, not 2002. >> Oh, yes. Oh, >> is this your child for real or where did mom go? Where is mom at? >> Snapchat. >> Which which store is she? >> Yeah, we're going to have to do that. >> You got an elevator. Take her back up there and get the phone and stuff. Is there a elevator? >> This one's going upstairs. [Music] >> It keeps getting better and better. >> Yeah. Violation of uh Well, they're about to Yeah, they're about to tell us, but >> for sure, but we're pretty confident. >> This is obviously control. >> You supposed to be on house arrest. You're not in England. >> BC. You guess what that is, right? >> No. Um, I was supposed to be on ankle monitor for the first 6 months, but they said they they haven't monitors. >> They just issued it. >> What are we looking for? >> Phone ID. >> We couldn't find it earlier, but I have a feeling I know why we couldn't find it. >> No, probably cuz we knew we had a warrant. She's taken into custody on charges of child neglect as well as the outstanding warrant. Attention then turns to locating the child's real mother. >> Didn't know I had one, honestly. >> Okay. Where was your ID be? >> Um, in my wallet, >> which is >> Oh, it's right there. Where' you >> Yeah. >> That's not the mother. was the person that would watch him. He's got a warrant. So 10:15 are for the kid. >> Yeah. So I'm not done anything with the child lieutenant sitting there babysitting the one-year-old. >> We're trying to find the the mother, you know, like about an hour ago. >> How are we going to get a hold of mom? >> Can you do it? >> You can get us a number. We can use our phones and call her. or if if unless you want to get her on Snapchat, she can call one of our phones or however the easiest way is to get a hold of mom. You need anything else besides your wallet. >> Um um actually my information is in one of those plastic bags. >> Is that mom? >> You really need to get on with some Hello. Oh, Lea, is this you? Okay, you need to come here cuz Messiah is here and he got out of the room and I was sleeping and the police are here and I guess I have a warrant for my arrest. >> No, this is the front desk. This is the front desk. >> Oh, I'm sorry. >> What time leave? What cab company she use? Is she Uber or what? >> Metro. >> Metro. Hey, this is Sergeant McClody at Panama City Police Department. Um, we are at the days in on 23rd Street. Did you guys happen to pick up a Malaysia Johnson sometime between now and probably an hour or hour and a half ago? Her son, her 2-year-old here, is now unattended. We're trying to track her down. Apparently, she left in a cab. Officers reach out to the cab company that the woman mentioned in hopes of tracking her down. >> Apparently, she's on her way here, according to the cab company and the number I just called, who's her friend, that the cab just picked her up, and she thinks she's coming here as well. The cab company tracked them down. They said they picked a girl up from days in and brought her to Lizby and they just picked a girl up from Lizenb to bring her back to the day's end. He believes that's her. He gave me the number. I called the number. It's her friend. She said, "Yeah, I think a cab just she just used my phone to call a cab. The cab should be getting here any minute." >> So hopefully the cab and the friend are accurate and there should be a cab pulling up here soon. >> That would be great. >> I I didn't look. >> Yeah. Is that a cab? >> Are you Malaysia? >> Yes. >> Okay. Come on in here. We found your child running around. >> Oh my god. uh the hallways and we found the babysitter who has a warrant. We've been trying to get a hold of you. >> Wow. >> Wow. >> I did not know that. >> Okay, we'll step on over here. He's going to want to talk to you in just a second. [Music] >> So, where's she at? >> She's in the back of the police car. >> Oh my god. You supposed to eat or something? >> Yes, sir. >> You want to get uh >> No, I'll run her up cuz we sit over here. >> You need to talk to her, too. >> I definitely do. I mean, she's temp. >> You good there? >> If you need someone to go relieve you, anything else from us, my money? >> Absolutely not. Okay. >> You guys are phenomenal. I mean, you guys went above. Despite her absence, the mother is not taken into custody. Do you think that was the right call or should police have pursued further action? Number three, cops step in to protect six-year-old from drunk mom. Officers respond to multiple reports of a vehicle swerving across lanes and nearly causing a collision. They track down the car at a gas station and make contact with the driver, a woman with a young child in the back seat. Let's take a look at what happens next. Hello, Officer Rogers Link. Police Department driver license proof insurance. >> Any reason why I'm stopping you today? >> No. >> No. Got reports that you were all over the road. You almost hit another vehicle and I see you coming down the middle of 143rd. Is there any reason you were driving like that today? >> No, I was texting. >> You were what? >> I was texting. >> You were texting? No. >> Had anything to drink today? >> No. >> Nothing at all? >> No. >> So, if you were to submit to a preliminary breath test, you'd blow zeros, right? >> Yeah. >> Where are we coming from? >> I'm coming from my mom's house. >> Coming from your mom's house? >> Yeah. >> Okay. All right. Hold on to that. All right. Does >> she smell like anything or no? >> I got like a whiff in the car of it, but she seems like she's a little slow, too. Let's see. >> She was coming down the middle of um 143rd when I saw her. She got called in as a reckless. Got called in, almost hit another vehicle. Um I got a little bit of it in the car. Not like anything much, but she also seems like she's a little like slow. >> Okay. >> So, I might run her through fields here. I don't know if there's a spot in Shell that we can walk in there and see. But >> I'll see if he wants this. He wants to do fields on her. If not, I'm going to do fields. I'll probably bring her inside. She's got a kid in the back. So, I might >> She got a kid in the back. That's all I'm like. >> So, I might have to have you stay with the kid and just stay with my squad out here. >> That's fine. >> Can you go ask her for her insurance again? Let me know if you smell anything cuz she was still looking for it. >> Uh, do you mind if we see her insurance again? >> I think >> Yeah, he I don't know. >> Just got to check and see. >> He He gave it to you or you gave >> I do. >> Does he still have it?
