What began as a routine emergency response to a traffic collision in Novi quickly escalated into a dangerous and highly unusual chain of events. Shortly after 300 p.m., police and fire crews responded to a multi-vehicle crash near the intersection of Novi Road and 10M Road. Among those involved was 33-year-old Changllin Lee, who was being evaluated by paramedics for injuries sustained in the crash. MedStar ambulance personnel were actively treating patients at the scene with one patient already inside the ambulance receiving care. >> According to investigators, while first responders were focused on medical treatment, Lee unexpectedly entered the driver's compartment of the ambulance and drove away from the scene without authorization. A paramedic and a patient remained inside as the vehicle left the area. Officers quickly initiated a pursuit while MedStar used its tracking system to provide real-time location updates. Authorities say the ambulance traveled at high speeds, reportedly exceeding 70 mph, and passed through active construction areas before sustaining damage to one of its tires. Don't do that. I'm going start heavy smoke coming out of the ambulance. Police say Lee attempted to flee the crash site on foot and resisted officers during his arrest. Authorities allege he tried to reach for an officer's firearm during the struggle. >> A second attempt to grab an officer's weapon was reported later while Lee was receiving treatment at a hospital. Officers also recovered a concealed knife during the investigation. Lee is facing multiple felony charges, including unlawful taking of a vehicle, fleeing and eluding police, assaulting and obstructing officers, attempting to disarm a law enforcement officer, and carrying a concealed weapon. His bond was set at 5 million.
