Some people deny everything, but these ones went the extra mile with stories so ridiculous that they almost deserve points for creativity. Here are five cases when cops couldn't believe these shoplifters lame excuses. Number five, shoplifters swore she didn't steal until the store showed her HD footage. In our opening case, officers were dispatched to a mall after reports of an active shoplifter. With a suspect already being monitored through HD surveillance, the store's asset protection team guides officers to the scene. Here's what happened next. >> You have to go right back there. >> Okay. Where'd it go? >> You're good. >> Hey. >> Hello. Hello. >> Come on in. >> Y'all got right now. >> Yeah. She got some kind of >> Where's she at? She's up in Polo. If she come out out the door here, take a left, go straight down, take a right, she can be right there. Actually, >> so it's on the second floor. >> Yeah. >> Oh, yeah. This is going to be >> Have y'all seen her already stuff items >> or do anything >> in her in her bag? She's We think she's got some sort of tool. She's fiddling with the sensors. She keeps going back into her bra. >> Okay. >> Do y'all want to wait for her to pass anything or how do y'all >> do y'all want us to make contact now? Yeah. >> Preferred to wait until she leaves. >> Wait till she leaves. That way. Yeah. She She going to court. She can't say, you know, I didn't pass my phone. >> Hey, so she's going to be on the second floor. It's going to be a black female heavy set stuffing items into her bag. Um they want to wait, white shirt, black pants. They want to wait until she uh leaves. So um then we'll just go ahead and make contact with her then. But we got eyes on her. She's in the children's section on the second floor. >> Okay. >> I don't think it's going to be super high dollar just the fact that she's got a tool with her. It's going to be >> She's taking ball though, which is pretty expensive, too. >> Yeah, >> she's taking a decent The bag's definitely getting a lot bigger as she's going. I just don't know how much longer she's going to be in here. >> So, those are Old Nate. Is that Old Navy on the bag? >> Yep. >> Y'all got some good cameras. It's like some CIA FBI kind of story >> that you see on TV. >> With how openly the suspect is stealing, even store security and responding officers are left stunned. She seems completely unaware that the cameras are catching her every move. >> I wish I had the popcorn so we can >> She She's not very slick about it. Picked her out right away. She's looking around for other people, but she's failing to look up and notice that there's cameras here. >> She just It's 2021. Every place has cameras. They could zoom in and read your text messages. Don't do anything illegal. >> What is rather >> she stuff into that Old Navy bag or her purse? >> Also, one pan in a purse. >> She's put items in both bags. >> Yeah, she keeps going up behind the rack. So, we we've caught like partially concealing it, but we know what's going in the bag. She's coming out without it. >> Have you guys actually seen the tool? >> It's It's like some kind of curve hook or something. >> What do you mean like she using that? Oh >> yeah, she does something. >> She's sticking it in the top. It may be It's not uncommon or it's not super common, but sometimes they use razor blades. >> You see, she's sticking. It's like some kind of hook that she's stickers off >> and she's concealing them. >> She keep going in and out of her shirt. >> Crazy. This is how criminals do Christmas shopping. >> Oh yeah. You just had to cut two people. I got to work an extra few hours and then go on a random day off and go. That's how I do my Christmas shopping. >> Got two people the other day who said they were in here doing some early Christmas shopping when we asked them why they were in here stealing. So >> Wow. >> They actually said that. >> Yeah. >> Do you know that actually that black ball came from there working? >> It's not like attention to them when they're doing that whole looking around and they think they're being sus like not suspicious but they are. Removing security tags isn't easy without the right tool. But the suspect seems to have one. And that tells officers this shoplifting wasn't a spur-ofthe- moment decision. >> I don't know where she's dropping the sensors. If she's putting the sensors in her shirt, she's going to dump them later or something. But >> So, is that usually what y'all do is y'all wait for them to leave so you can go ahead and >> Yeah. Because the company have it like u you get sued because you get stopped before they leave and they said oh what's going to pay for that. >> Oh yeah you have to show >> because you have an exit and then it's so easy if they leave cuz they just didn't pay for when they left. >> She just passed the last point. So your intention was not >> Yeah. >> Right now I'm going to say she's probably around the $300 mark. But I'm not positive cuz like I said, you can't see everything she's concealing. >> Yeah. But >> Oh, yep. >> She just put something else in the air. >> Yep. >> She's nervous. I think she might go out upper. I think she's just going to look for the closest door. >> Small. She's on that escalator heading downstairs. >> She's walking towards the entrance. >> Inside of the mall. >> Yeah. Like going into the mall. >> The moment she heads for the door, officers spring into action. >> 41 to 44. She's going back to the Abricorn side. Stay over there. She She walked out. 414. She just walked out. >> All right. You give us all the merch. Have a seat. >> Do you have your ID with you, ma'am? Is it in your bag? >> Is it in your purse? >> Yeah, we got it. I >> think that's everything. >> Put that back in there. >> I think she Well, we going to be looking at that, too. Stand up. >> What's your idea? >> This right here. Turn around. Pick your hand back. >> Is this what we saw? >> Yeah, that's it. >> Like, >> this is supposed to be toenail cutters, but snip stuff. And then this goes inside. >> Yep. To take the sensors off. I I guess I'm going to come over with the camera here. >> Okay. >> Oh, okay. >> You'd think getting caught red-handed would make her come clean, but wait until you hear what she tells the officers next. >> Okay. >> You have a receipt that's dated and time stamp for today. for today. >> It was bought. No, it wasn't for today. It was just in that bag. But I got the receipt for that. It was I swear to God, it was bought off my car. You can pull my card. >> You paid for that? >> How long ago? When when did you buy this? >> 4 days. >> 4 days ago. And it happens to be in the same bag with the merchandise that you stole today. >> I bought that bag in here. You can look at your camera and see. I bought that bag in here with that in there because I was returning I came here originally to return a purse that I bought off the if you purse. >> So, okay. >> Look at my purse. You'll >> still be able receipts can be. >> Do you have proof that you did already buy that? >> Besides >> from our from our debit card and it's it's been paid for. I promise you. >> I know. But I understand >> because you have a Diller's merchandise. >> Doesn't say that these pants are bought. It just says a random charge from Diller. So, we have >> No, those pants were both >> pants from Dillers and an Old Navy bag with merchandise that you stole from belts today. >> She had a receipt in her purse that she pulled out, tried to tuck in into that bag to look like she was paying for it. She probably used it at another store. >> I came in here with a purse. Okay. I had that in the Old Navy bag with those pants in it. And I had that purse in here. I returned that. See, that's proof of the purchase right down the back. The yellow sticker. No, look on the back of the bag. You just looked back. >> That's proof of purchase. That's what they put on there. >> Purchase required for return. >> Yeah, >> that's when you steal it and you go in and you try to say, "Hey, I bought this, but I lost my receipt, so can I return this?" And then they It doesn't matter. She's already going to jail. It was over a felony amount. >> It doesn't matter. >> Yeah, I know. It's not I'm not making a big deal out of it, but she's just asking me a question. >> Officers now have the final tally. And the bad news, she's just crossed the line into a felony charge. >> 6192. >> Hold on. 562. So that's the amount that you have to >> Yeah. Which one? >> The subtotal, not including the tax, but >> it's still a felony. Yeah, it's it's on here. I was just looking at the wrong amount. You're good. >> It's okay. You're going to be able to keep the pants. It's just gonna go in the uh storage bag while you're in jail. >> Just tell her don't go into jail for uh for shoplifting and build. >> No. So, your purse is going to go into the property room for safekeeping. When you get out, you can go there and pick it up. But this stuff, your phone, your cards, ID, and keys, I'll take with you. So, you'll have that. Most people need that stuff with them. You got kids or you trying to sell that? >> I have kids. >> Did that stuff was going to go to? No. >> What do you want? >> You work? >> I really was going to sell it. >> Did that Uber lift job? Get a few extra dollars in the legal way. It is a learning experience. >> How she going to get keys to get in the house and stuff? That's just awful. I'm so stupid. And I got >> She doesn't have her own keys to the house. >> Well, she somebody stole her, so she just lost everything. But >> I got a cousin that live in Savannah. But >> 56250, [Applause] >> felony shoplifting and also possession of tools and a commission of a crime. Just take it as a learning experience and try not to let it happen again. I mean, everybody makes mistakes. >> As mentioned, the woman was charged with possession of tools for the commission of a crime and felony shoplifting. Number four, designer bag, crocodile tears, and a felony. In this next case, officers responded to a department store after a woman was caught trying to steal a Tory Birch bag. According to the staff, the suspect concealed the item in her shopping bag and headed for the exit. By the time police arrived, store management was already confronting the woman. And here's what followed. >> Call 397. >> Hello. >> Hey, how's it going, man? >> Uh, so just let you know, we um we picked up um this lady with a with two very large shopping bags. She went over I believe it's Tristan Burch uh clutch. Um she grabbed it, saw her walk up, grabbed the selection, um make the selection, then she went over, looked around a little bit. Um and then she concealed the bag um in the the Nike shopping bag. Um and then we can we watched her walk out the store past her last point of payment. Um we recovered the merchandise. She was very cooperative with us, walk back with us, and now we have her over here. >> How much was taken? >> Uh I don't have the Hold on. No. >> Yeah. And you have the BC 448. >> 448. >> 448. >> Yes, sir. >> So, and we're approating next door. So, you would like to prosecutor. >> We're going to verify the information. >> Hello. Hello. >> And then from there, we'll figure out whether or not we're going to press charges or if we'll just do a trespass. Um the unfortunate thing just to let you know uh the price value of the purse is of a level that we usually prose. >> Hello. Do >> you uh do you have a driver's license? >> No, I have it on me. >> You a Florida driver's license, right? >> Huh? >> A Florida driver's license? >> Yeah, I have it on. >> The information you gave me is true and correct? >> Yes. >> You show me 97 on that 22? This is all yours, right? >> This is all yours. >> Yeah. >> And shockingly, this isn't her first runin with the law for shoplifting. >> Have you ever been arrested for shoplifting >> in the past? Have you been prosecuted? >> Like, have you ever been convicted? >> How many times? >> What? >> Like two or three times? >> You been convicted two or three times? One time. >> For one time. Okay. And that was for a theft. >> For theft. >> Petty theft. >> Petty theft. Like like like from business, >> huh? >> From a business. >> Okay. Do you remember which one? >> We have a whole different white. >> We're just waiting for my partners to get here and then we'll proceed with the paperwork. >> Okay. >> Um, yeah. Decision hasn't been made yet on what's going to happen, but when they get here, we're going to figure it out. >> Okay. >> Good. Um, so we asked her to shop there not too long ago. Um, she approached purses with a large two large bags and a shopping bag, monkey bag. Um, she selected a 400 $440 or $448 Tristan Burst clutch. Um, soft clear selection. Um she walks around a little bit with it and then conceals it in her shopping bag and we continuously observed her walking towards the mall entrance, walked out, passed the last point of payment, made the stop. She was very cooperative with us, guided her back and now she's in the office. >> Okay. And you guys want the possibility to go to jail for this? >> Yeah, you guys can see the video if you want. D1 or >> prosecution, right? Prosecution. Yes. >> Okay. Um, you guys have video and video. >> Have you guys had officers send you the link like the email link >> and then where you guys attach the video to the link or you guys burning us CDs? >> Right? We're burning CDs. >> So you guys >> right now are they're doing some upgrades for system. Sorry. >> Have you have ID her? >> Given the value of the stolen bag, felony charges are on the table. And with the store's decision to press charges, the officers move forward with the arrest. >> So, um, >> she qualify for anything. >> I'm running our commission history right now. She says she has prior history. >> So, here I'm waiting for that right now. >> If there isn't, they're called an NTA. >> Yeah. Well, they that's not their choice anyway. >> That's not their choice. But >> I have everything right here. >> Do you going to take it? >> 100%. I want to go to jail, by the way. >> How you doing, man? >> Um, so I I kind of want to get your side since we're taking the report here. I want to get your side of the story. In order for me to even ask you any questions because you're not free to leave, I have to advise you your constitutional rights. So, all I need you to give me is a verbal yes or no. Okay. You have a right to remain silent. Do you understand? >> Yeah. >> Okay. All right, ma'am. How about you tell me your side of the story? What's going on? did some walked in, picked up a purse. >> Walked out. >> Okay. Did you Did you pass Did you walk out the store with it on you? >> No. >> No. Did they c Did >> I mean we're going to cuz we're going to go watch the camera. I'm just giving you a chance to >> Yeah. I just walked off and they caught me right up. >> But So, did you have any of the proper anything that you didn't pay for with you? >> Yes. >> Okay. Uh anything specific? No, just the purse. >> Okay. So, just the purse. Okay. Um, >> when he came to me, I just just gave it back to him. >> Okay. All right. Well, um, whoever ends up saying this, they're going to they they told me you've been very cooperative. Um, the fact that you're very honest with me, I know goes a long way. Um, we're trying to see if you, uh, apply for NTA, but, um, I pretty sure that you've had, you said you've had convictions before for theft. Um, so >> did you give this officer your ID? >> I did. >> I'm going to send it to you. >> But you have her um >> She may be crying, but with almost $450 in attempted theft, the outcome is already set. >> All right, ma'am. Yeah, I know this is hard for you now, but uh just just sit with and deal with us. We're going to whatever we end up doing, we're going to make sure it's done as soon as possible. So, uh, folder here with you guys. Appreciate them. And they're just out. >> These guys are a little more squared away than some places we go to. They're very nice. They give us a little folder. So, let's make sure we have everything. Um, we we don't really need a whole story from her. She basically just admitted to walking out the store with the purse. >> Yeah. >> Um, >> do you have a Is the receipt in here? >> Yes, sir. >> So, let's confirm what what she stole. So even >> this looks like a Fleming soft chain wallet of $440. >> Yeah. Hold on. >> Good. >> I mean, do you have any property with you? >> Huh? >> Do you have any property with you? Like your own property? >> Yes, your own. I have >> like is this yours or? >> Yeah, that's all purpose back. >> Is there like stuff in here that you like you need this box? No. >> Okay. So, we're not going to bring What about those shoes? Those look like they have receipts on them. Okay. All right. So, that's some trash. Um, and this is your stuff? >> Yeah. >> And it's your handbag? >> Yeah. >> All right. We'll go we'll go through that. >> And did you have an ID? >> No. >> No. Okay. You're Latoya of Manning? >> Yeah. >> Okay. Just put that to the side. Um, >> all right. Ma'am, do me a favor and stand up. Put your hands behind your back. Can you do two? Is my my ring? >> Yeah. Yeah. You're cool with that. >> Yeah. So, the last person we put two on, took advantage of our kindness, and slipped it to the front. >> No, I can't do that. >> Okay. Just saying if you do that, >> no. Then we're going to take it off and we're going to do one and it's not going to be comfortable. >> Though she's cooperative, the officers aren't taking chances. One step out of line and things will go downhill fast. >> This Can I twist it around? Okay. I got arthritis in my hand. >> It's tight. >> Which one is this one? >> Yeah. >> All right. >> All right, ma'am. Um, last we're going to we're going to search you out by the car. Um, do you have anything on you that if you get introduced to jail would result in a like right now you're being charged with a miss like petty theft? >> Mhm. >> If you introduce something to the jail that's not allowed to be in there, that's a felony. >> Okay. >> Um, so that this is like a opportunity to to squash it right here. If you have it like hidden in your garments or anything like that. Okay. All right. Uh, you ready? [Applause] That's why I didn't see you. Okay. Papa cross 34 black you [Music] Latoya was ultimately charged with felony shoplifting. Number three, undercover cops watched this trio steal, then pulled out the handcuffs. On April 19th, 2024, undercover officers observed three women working together to shoplift from multiple stores, grabbing merchandise and walking straight out. But what they didn't know was that the authorities had been watching all along and officers were already preparing to move in. >> Yeah, they're right there. >> Okay, let's make contact when they uh when they're heading out. >> All right, we're moving the contact. The one with the black shirt. >> I'm 102. I don't have nothing. That's cool. >> I don't have anything, sir. >> What? What do you mean you don't have anything? >> I don't know. What else could you be grabbing me for? >> Okay, you have this. >> My phone for me. >> Listen to him. You're being detained for a theft investigation. >> So, just comply. Just comply. >> Just comply. You're being detained for a theft in the phone. I'm going to call my job. >> Okay. Go with him. I got her. Okay. >> I got her. Thank you. >> You have ID on you? >> Um, not in this bag. I don't think so. No, >> in this bag. You don't have ID? >> No, it's in the car. >> In the car? >> I got one. >> Yeah. >> And red. What happened? >> You're being detained for a theft investigation. >> Okay. >> Stop. Stop. Give me a minute. >> All right. So, we're about to find out your hair. I think you like got all three good things. With the final two suspects now detained near the store, officers officially have all three women in custody. The next step is searching each individual before ushering them into the transport units. [Music] Coffee transport. >> Yeah, let's go ahead. My car is out here. Where where is your car at? >> Way on the other side. Okay, let's go up here to our car. >> Hey Josh, that's 104. Meet me in front of the uh T-Mobile booth in the front. Do they need to be searched? >> She needs to be searched. >> Yeah. All All of them. >> Those are the bag off. Is that what you see? Step up here. You going to listen to the law direction. >> We're going to lean up against the car. Okay. >> Just just hang up by the car. >> It's kind of hot. caring. That's why I keep moving. >> That's her property. >> I haven't. >> As expected, all three deny the allegations, but the evidence speaks for itself. Surveillance footage and their bags full of stolen merchandise leave little room for doubt. Even so, none of them is ready to admit what they've done. [Music] >> I gave it to the black man already. Oh. No, she didn't have Nike because she had this purse. I didn't check it. >> [ __ ] >> Yeah, they were they looked really sketchy. Oh, >> she's okay. Um, >> group texted they have felony charges. They need an approval real quick. >> Felony char? What are they? >> Yeah, I don't know. They said they have felony on the guy on the guy they took. So, approval. >> Okay. All this is bad. >> This one. >> You want it all? >> Delta. >> Um, she wants to sit in with you guys. Let me take the seat belt off and you guys can just all It's going to be a little uncomfortable just to do it. >> Do me a favor. >> Yeah, please scratch it. >> Scratch. >> All right. >> Put the windows down. >> Yeah, I'll put the windows down. >> The one that uh from earlier had uh two prior convictions. >> Just FYI. >> The guy that they caught earlier. Uh, he had two. >> That's why I was feeling it. >> Thank you. >> Yeah, that's why I was feeling it. He had two prior hours. >> All right. So, now I see a few questions. All I need is a verbal yes or no. >> All right. So, you have the right to remain silent. Do you understand? >> Yes. >> Anything you say maybe use against you in court? Do you understand? >> Yeah. >> Reading your rights. Do you want to talk to me about today? >> Do I want to what? >> Do you want to answer some questions I have to you about today? >> Um, other than what I asked you. No, not that important though. >> So, you don't want to talk to me? >> Huh? So, you don't want to talk to me? Okay. >> With the first suspect keeping quiet, the officers don't waste time and turn to the next, hoping she'll break the silence. Speak to you first. >> All right. So, ask some questions. All I need is a yes or no. You have the right to remain silent. Do you understand? >> Huh? >> You have the right to remain silent. Do you understand? >> Yes. >> Okay. Anything you say may be used against you in court. Do you understand? >> Yes. You have the right to talk to a lawyer before and during questioning. Do you understand? >> Yes. >> All right. Do you after reading your rights, do you want to speak to me about today? >> No. Okay. >> You want to get out of that? Sorry. >> Okay. Oh no. All right. So, standing to the other two people, you have the right to remain silent. Do you understand? I have verbal yes or no. Verbal yes or no? >> Yes. >> Okay. Anything you say may be used against you in court. Do you understand? Yes. >> You have the right to talk to your lawyer before and during question. Do you understand? >> Yes. >> So, after reading your rights you wish to speak to me about today. >> Just a few questions I have. >> It's up to you. >> You said you have a few questions. >> I have a few questions. Microphone on off. >> Huh? >> Microphone on and off. >> Yes or no? You don't want to talk to me? >> You talking about before or after you ask the question? >> Huh? >> Before or after you ask? >> Whatever you want to do. >> The third suspect seems willing to answer, but just like the other two, she won't give the officers as much to work with. >> So, if you want to hear my question, ask my question. You can choose the answer right or not. >> I want to hear a question. >> So, you agree to that? >> Yeah. >> Okay. So, what did you guys go to the store today for? >> Nothing. >> For nothing. >> Okay. So, why are you here right now? And why was there a magnet in your pocket? You like my questions? Are you Are you done with my questions? Okay, sit back. Altogether, the three suspects attempted to steal a staggering $826 worth of merchandise from multiple stores across the mall. All three were charged with grand theft. And with two of them found carrying magnetic detachers, they also face charges for possessing anti-shoplifting devices. Number two, serial thief got away too many times until this encounter. Next up, in Princeton, New Jersey, officers responded to a CVS at around 7:30 p.m. after the store staff reported a woman shoplifting multiple items. Even more concerning, they claimed it's not the first time she's done it. Here's what happened when the police arrived. >> Yeah, like our bags are on the outside. >> No, it's not too small. Bring it back. Return it. No problem. >> All right. [Music] You don't need the receipt either. So, if you just bring like your card that you paid. >> No, I'm waiting for somebody to come. >> They contact you before? >> Yeah, cuz I was sitting waiting. >> That's why I haven't seen you. I've been sick. >> Wait, so you've been waiting for like 6 hours? Yeah. >> Okay. Where you come from? >> I live in Oh, well, I was at um I don't have a phone right now, so that's why I'm like waiting. But my friend is picking me up at She gets out of work at 8. >> She gets out of work. >> What? When did you make those arrangements earlier today or that she was coming at 8? >> Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Okay. Um I guess my my concern is that um is there anything that you've been taking in the store or that you haven't? No. I believe you've been coming inside. >> Okay. >> Have you Have you consumed anything in the store? Taken anything without paying for it or anything else like that? No. Five more. >> So if I were to watch the video cameras, because there's video cameras on every aisle in the store, it would show that you >> didn't take anything like food wise eating anything or >> Sure. >> What do you got there? >> Despite the report, the woman insists this is all just a misunderstanding and that she had every intention of paying. Unfortunately, the officers aren't buying it. >> You have a foot bag. >> Mhm. >> Okay. Okay. >> Yeah. I have to go to the um wait where she already said she's going to pick me up. >> A digital display has been sent to you. >> Did you have stuff with you? >> Bag. >> I have a bag already. Like I have like my book bag. Like not my like my like a my clothes. >> Okay. >> From the bed. >> Okay. Did you have food in that bag? Is that like where did you get the food from? >> No. No, because the employees are saying that you were finding something inside the store. >> I might have ate cashews. >> Okay. From where? >> Yeah, but like that were from your bag or from the store? >> No. >> Okay. Did you pay for them? >> No. Okay. See? So, that's a problem. >> Call any5. >> Do you have money to pay for? >> Yes. Yeah. >> Was your plan to pay for those cashews or what was your what was going on next? >> You were extra careful with my wallet. >> Please stand back now. >> So, I went to get my wallet. >> Okay. So, you were here. You were eating the cashews here. You left and came back. >> Mhm. >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> Anything? Did you take anything else? That's right. >> Just the cashews. >> Yeah. >> Any like one of those firearms trucks? >> Do you have you have a driver's license or ID at all? >> Um I don't think I have I I might have It's expired, but >> The suspect is later identified as Casey Helms. >> What time is it? It's 7:43 right now. [Music] >> How long you been here at the CVS? Not too long. >> Mm- >> Where's your friend coming from that's picking you up? >> Someville. >> Somerville. You said they get off at 8. I got to go wait for her where I decided I was going to meet her. >> Where are you supposed to be meeting her at? >> Um I forget which uh one of the gas stations >> in Princeton right here. >> Yeah. [Music] Go to the bathroom. >> How you doing? >> How are you? >> I'm okay. >> What's your name? >> Casey. >> Casey. Just come step outside. Let's go outside where it's nice. Do you have any belongings in here? extra card. If you can scan it now, please scan it. Now, >> with the formalities out of the way, it's time to address the shoplifting claims. And Casey is more than ready to explain her side. >> Casey. >> What's your first name? >> Casey. >> Casey, I'm sorry. So, Casey, I don't know if the officers explain this to you. We We're up here because the manager thought you were shot up against >> Oh, yeah. I think it's just because I kept coming back and forth cuz I'm waiting for my arrival. I don't really have anywhere to like sit. >> I understand. >> And I was sitting over there before. Like I forget somewhere over there.
