These folks thought acting innocent would be enough to fool the officers, but they've heard it all before. Here are five cases when shoplifters play dumb after trying to leave the store with stolen items. Number five. When being caught in the act doesn't stop someone from trying to bargain. On August 14th, 2024, officers responded to a Walmart after reports of a woman stacking multiple items together and scanning only one at the self-checkout. What she didn't know was that the store's loss prevention team had eyes on her the entire time. Unaware that her every move was being recorded, she didn't know loss prevention was already preparing to confront her. Hi. Have a seat. I didn't know I just paid for the stuff because I didn't understand how to work it. I know We'll verify first and then we'll see what happens. Cuz I just was like putting it through. Have a seat. We'll go through it all and once we figure out what ain't been paid for then we'll do it. All right. Do you have any ID on you at all for anything? I just looked at this. That's all. 0414 What's your first name? Tania. Gish is your last name? That's my middle name. Middle name, okay. It's fine. I thought it like because I didn't scan anything. misunderstanding misunderstanding I I had it I know that's a A misunderstanding is one, maybe two items, not 23. No, but About $211 worth. Cuz that's not a misunderstanding. That is called theft. No. No. >> Yes. But see what happened is like holding it up, I just scanned it like I but I didn't see the tag or I just scanned it like that. >> One or two items >> said the one was helping me, but I want to go back and pay for it because I'm not that type of person. I don't get in no trouble. Y'all want my name. I don't get in no trouble. I'm not that type That's that's what everybody says when they get caught stealing. No, you you want my name, right? You want the name. I I don't get in no trouble. No, that's not what happened. Everything It just was a misunderstanding. It wasn't intentional or nothing. >> A misunderstanding is one or two items, not 23. Officer, I didn't About $211 It's just I got two small kids, officer. Please, just let me just pay for it, please. >> You had that opportunity when you were doing the self-checkout. That was your opportunity to scan and pay for the items. I I told I didn't go through. I didn't I didn't I didn't mean to do what what happened. Officer, please. I can I just pay, please? I have two small children. Please, officer, please. Like it it wasn't a It wasn't serious, officer, please. The woman insists it was all a mistake, but the security footage tells a different story. The camera clearly shows her stacking up items, scanning just one, and placing more than 20 unpaid products into her cart, totaling over $200. She living over here? No, she's a tourist. I just on vacation. It just wasn't It just a mistake. When are you leaving? I'm leaving um on Friday. What's that? Friday. It's just a mistake, officer. Just please. I have two small kids, please. I'm not from here. Well, just because you're not from here doesn't mean that you can steal. No, I'm not stealing, officer. You didn't steal. No, it You didn't scan those items and No, probably because I was I was rushing cuz my cousin keep calling to see I was on the phone. My cousin keep calling. I was trying to hurry to scan everything. Like it wasn't it wasn't intentional, officer, please. Please. Can I just pay for the missed items, please? >> You had that opportunity, but beyond that Officer, it wasn't it wasn't It was just a misunderstanding. I didn't It's not a misunderstanding. Officer, please. I have two small kids, please. You should have thought about that. Officer, like it it wasn't intentional. Yes, it was very intentional. Watch the video. It was very intentional. I was on the phone. My cousin keep asking where we was where we was. I was trying to hurry to catch and some of the stuff I just kept missed. I thought that I was driving. Like please, miss. Please, ma'am. I It wasn't intentional. Thank you. Can I just pay for it? >> for that. Just stop saying the same thing. You're just not I can't do anything. I just want to pay for it, please. As the scene unfolds, the suspect's cousin arrives and the officer calmly fills her in on what just happened and why her family member is being detained. Hello. How are you? Yeah. You want to know what? Well, we're still working out that Yeah, cuz this There's a lot of items that she didn't pay for. It was over $200. So, it's I don't I'm not sure if you you know where the self-checkout is. Yeah. There's cameras right there and on the videos it shows her not scanning a lot of items. So, it was like $230, $250 worth. Walmart just wants her to pay for it. So, yeah, we're still kind of working it out. Yeah. Yeah, we're working it out. Where Where are you going to be at? I mean I'm from the Bahamas. Yeah, it's probably going to be like another 10, 15 minutes. Okay. Where are you going to be out? Outside or something? Okay. What she saying? Oh, they're still at the store. She just I don't know. One of your family members. Just want to know how long it's going to be. That's all. She doubles down saying she never meant to steal. However, the footage tells a different story and the store is standing firm on pressing charges. Hey, tell her Don't make me yank you up. Stand up. Officer, like I said, I'm not a problem person. Please, let me just pay for it. So, they don't want that. They want to proceed charges. Press charges. So, you're going to go to jail. You could be released today, but your family members have to go to the jail and get you out. Okay? So, yeah. It's about 45 minutes I can give you the address. Where Where you're staying at? You guys staying in Orlando? Yeah. Okay. We just come last night. Yeah. So, I don't know Y'all from the Bahamas? So, I don't know how it is in the Bahamas. When you go to jail, you have to pay to get them out. That's how it is here. Yeah. So, if she doesn't pay, then she has to stay in jail until she until tomorrow when she sees the judge. She have to go to court or jail? Jail. What? So, how much you have to pay? $500. That's to get her out of jail. Correct. To get her out. So, a lot of A lot of people that come and steal from Walmart here, they always have a lot of money on them. I don't know why they don't pay. I arrested someone last week and they they didn't scan like $100 and then he had a a whole thing of cash. He just paid for it. You're going to spend more money getting her out of jail. So, Yeah. So, I can give you the address. I think um and everything that she did purchase, I can give it to you so you can take She's in handcuffs now, but that doesn't stop her from making one last attempt to talk her way out of trouble. Yeah, you can go. Okay. Please, don't press charges on me, please. Uh-oh. Don't move. All right, where do you want to go? Just here? Can I get my ID before I leave? I have your ID. No. That's my thing. You want to go get Stand still. Black female, 5'10, female, 5'10, 5'15. Please, guys. Please, just give me a kiss and don't press charges, please. I will pay for it. I'm very sorry. I have two kids. Look at this. Please. Please, guys. Ma'am. I I already told you that we cannot go back. Once you're here, you passed point of sales. We cannot go back. I didn't I didn't mean to. I just thought everything get canceled It's Walmart's rules. It's not our rules. So, >> I thought everything get canceled on one thing. But you you came in and I I'll come back to you. You copy and paste. Yeah, that's what I'm going to try to do right now. I'm going to see if it lets me cuz sometimes >> I thought everything get canceled on one thing. Now, you're okay? You guys are going to do something mean to me? No. >> So you're going to be going to jail for retail petty theft. You will have a $500 bond, which means after you're booked in you have the opportunity to bond out for $500. You can either pay $500 cash or you can get with the bondsman and they do the typically do two uh 10%. Um so it'd be nothing less than $100 with the bondsman. Could be more, could be less. All that remains is to gather the necessary details before heading out with the suspect in custody. Uh what about this um your family is here? To get the items you paid? The items that I paid. Huh? There? One of my items I didn't get because I told them I paid cash. >> No, that's the stuff you paid for. The stuff that you paid for. No, some of them didn't get I paid on my card. I paid for everything. No, you paid for everything on that receipt. You want to uh return you want to give it to the your family. The items you paid. I paid on card so I can't return it. Right? You can. Oh, wait. Just let me know. You want to give it to your family or return. Where's your phone at? I don't have it. Where is it at? It's in my bag. Okay. I'm in the store. I'm not this type of person. I live in the Bahamas. No, from what I saw you are a thief. I just watched you steal. No, I'm not. I'm getting no problem. Nothing like that. So the items that you paid for, this receipt right here which is the items behind you. Do you want to leave it with whoever you came with? Those items or you want us to return it to the car that this was purchased Those are your items. I will I will return to pay for this too because I No, no, no, no, that's what we're beyond that. What you owe. Yes, I understand what you're saying. Where do you want those to go? You want them so they're going with your family members. Do you still want to return? No, but I'm worried about what you stole. You're not paying for what you stole. Yeah. First off. Yeah. That's hers. Yeah, I already Bonds bond is 500. Yeah, I already told them. What started as a $200 theft is now costing her much more. Her bond is set even higher than the value of what she attempted to steal. So they want to know they want to know if they can get your card because you got to pay $500 to get out. I don't know if they won't accept this. They don't accept credit or debit cards. Or they got to take out money. Yeah. Do you want to know want her to know your Card number. You can't but you got to pay it to get out. If you don't pay you stay here till tomorrow until you see the judge and the judge will determine if you can you get out or not. Yeah, so you got to pay cash or they got to go to a bondsman. But he can't pay with Uh you have the receipt. I do. If you want to know. You want [clears throat] to talk to her Let's go out there in the parking lot. Okay. Oh, you already called it? Oh. My bad. Yeah, we're going there now. Yep. So you could go there or drop things off. It's about 45 minutes to an hour drive with all the traffic. And then it takes about 45 minutes to an hour for them to process her. Ultimately, the woman was booked for shoplifting. Number four. Serial shoplifters finally get caught and realize there's no talking their way out this time. On May 31st, 2024, officers in Cocoa Beach, Florida attempted to stop a vehicle linked to multiple shoplifting cases in the area. Here's what happened after the authorities made contact. Hello. Hey, can you stay in the car for me? Yes. Ma'am, do you have your driver's license? She have hers. Yep, that's who I was talking to. STOP! STOP! THEY'RE FLEEING. THEY'RE FLEEING. THE suspects took off ignoring commands to stop. Officers quickly radioed for backup and the vehicle was later found abandoned in a nearby neighborhood. That's when the foot chase began ending with one suspect in GET ON THE GROUND. 43 I WILL TASE YOU. GET ON THE GROUND. DON'T TASE ME. GET ON THE GROUND. GET ON THE GROUND. >> ON THE GROUND. I get on the ground. One in custody, the other one still running eastbound from this 10-20. Get up. Face down. Face down. Put your hands Roll on your face and put your hands behind your back. We'll get all that here in a second. 10-4, it was the last house on the dead end. They got out and ran eastbound from that house's backyards. Wait, wait. Hold on. One second. My feet bleeding and all that. >> Okay, well don't run from the police. I would never run from the officer. I would never run from the cop. What? It doesn't matter. You got out and ran from the vehicle. Not at all. You did. I told you to stop and kept running through the backyard. How? How? With your feet. I even tased you and told you to stop. Did you stop? >> There's everything on the camera. Yep. Stand right here. Stand right here. You already did. She's already in cuffs and facing charges. But she's still giving the officer a hard time. What she doesn't realize is that it's already over. Her accomplice has been caught as well. All right, we're going to walk. We're going to walk around the other side and you can sit down. Hold on. I don't even want to get in the car right now. But let me see right quick. All right. Hold on. Let me catch my breath and catch my breath too. Stand right there. I'm standing. No, you're not. Just those two. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, they fled from us in the vehicle after committing a retail theft. Oh, really? Yeah. Thank you for going after them and doing your job. That's what we're here for. The other one's in his car. One's in my car, one's in and she's the second one. She's the one that kept kept taking off running. She's the one. The other one's in the other car? Yeah. $200 ain't a lot of money. It is in my world. That's a phone bill. That's true. Especially when you got Verizon. Yeah. Especially when you got auto pay you don't think of it.
