These squatterers thought finding an empty home meant free rent, but the officers were there to remind them how the law actually works. Here are four cases when squatters think they can live in a house rentree. Number four, man tried to turn a Hilton lobby into his bedroom, but the police immediately shut it down. On March 3rd, 2024, officers from the Melbourne Police Department responded to a call about someone sleeping inside a service elevator at a local Hilton. By the time they arrived, staff reported the man had moved to a sofa in the hallway. Listen to what the staff had to say. >> Yeah. >> Hi, how's it going? I'm officer Reed, Melbourne Police. Obviously, everything's recorded on body cam. Okay. >> Okay. Yeah, no problem. >> So, what's going on? You guys find this mail? >> No, we didn't. Um we got a uh we got a call from well the housekeeper came downstairs and had informed us that there was a guy sleeping in inside the thing um sleeping inside the um >> elevator >> the the service elevators like the the pillows and everything. So she said he was there like 6:30. She thought he was like a night um person. Um so when we went up there we saw him. We you know asked him, "Yo, what you doing in here?" He was just like, "Oh, I'm with somebody. I just wanted to get some pillows." So we're like, "Okay, what's the room?" He said, "I don't know if I can give you that information." you have to give us something. And after that, we was like, "You walk with us to front desk." So, he was just like, "No, I don't want to." So, he started putting his stuff on, started walking. I had my guy trail him and I was like, "I'm going to call the non-emergency number. You just keep telling him, but he end up letting him get on the elevator and then I stay with him." So, he end up losing him from there. He might have stayed in the hotel and probably went to another service landing, but that's when I called you guys. >> Okay. >> So, he had a um >> There's no way to track him with the cameras. Uh yeah, if I go down there, I can probably see if he's like somewhere in the area, the last known um area he was in. Um but he's wearing a Cal Calvin Klein um sweater, blue jeans, black sneakers. Um he has a uh navy blue coat jacket. >> So he look like he could be a guest or he look homeless or >> he looked he looked like he was probably homeless. >> Okay. >> Yeah. So um um he looked like he was scared. He had uh the Hilton um rags, like the wash rags wrapped around his wrist, both of them. So, >> okay. >> He seemed real timid. So, >> you said probably like the fifth floor. >> He was on the fifth floor last known and he got on the elevator and went down. So, as I'm moving towards the elevator to see my guy, he said, "Yo, he got on the elevator." So, >> okay. >> So, he's probably still in the area cuz there was only two areas to go, which either would be down, but we have that blocked off cuz the construction. So, it would either be this back entrance right here or the main entrance. >> Okay. So, I'm going to go ahead and look like um low cut uh goatee. >> The staff attempts to bring the officers to where the suspect was last seen, but he's already moved. Still, security footage confirms he hasn't left the building, and it doesn't take long before they track him down again. >> Anything? No. Perfect. >> Sir, what's going on? >> Nothing. I'm waiting on I'm waiting on my ride. >> Okay. >> Who's your ride? >> Just let you know you're being recorded on body cam. All right. >> What's your name? I don't want to give y'all that. >> Why not? >> Cuz I said so. >> Okay. What are you doing here today? >> Waiting to go home. >> How'd you get here? >> Uh just a Uber, bus, train. What? >> I don't want to tell yall that. I'm waiting to leave. So you leaving with an Uber then? How are you leaving? >> I'm over by transportation. >> Where are you heading? >> Away from here. >> Where's away from here? Going home? >> Yeah. >> Where's that at? >> I don't want to tell you that. >> All right. So, you guys want him off? >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> All right. So, obviously you can't stay here. I'm not saying I'm waiting to leave. >> How long till your ride's here? >> I don't know. I don't have my phone on me. >> Okay. >> The man shows no real urgency to leave, but the officers make it clear that he can't stay here. If it comes down to it, they're willing to give him a ride to the train station or the bus stop. [music] Still, he doesn't seem ready to go. >> I can give you a ride to the train station. >> No, thank you. >> All right. Look, the issue here is you can't be on this property. They don't want you on this property. >> They understand me that though. >> I'm telling you right now. >> All right, that's cool. >> So, you have to wait for your ride somewhere else. >> The mall's across the street. I can bring you over there's a bus stop and you can wait there for the bus. >> Nah, my ride already on their way. I'm I'm I should be leaving soon. >> How long? Sorry. How long? Cuz like I said, they don't want you to stay here. So, you got to leave. >> All right. I heard you. >> Do you have a contact number for your ride that we can give it they can give you a new location, the mall? >> Nah, they already know where I'm at. >> So, how'd you call a ride if you don't have the phone? >> What you mean? >> You said you have a ride coming. How do you have a ride? >> You already know where I'm at. >> What's your first name? >> I don't want to give you that. [snorts] Leave. >> Well, you're not allowed to be here. So, we just need to lease your name to put in the system. >> I don't want to give that to you. All right. Right now, you have to leave. >> No, I don't. >> Yes, you do. If you don't leave, you will be you will be under arrest. >> No, I don't. I didn't do nothing. I'm waiting. >> They don't want you here. >> I'm I'm out of exit. I'm I'm out of exit door. Waiting to leave. >> Do you not understand? You can't be on this property. >> All right. I heard you. I told you I'm about to leave. Y'all come back. I I probably won't be here. That's not how it works. >> There's no aggression from him yet, and the officers are willing to let him go without consequence. But that offer won't stay on the table for long. >> So once you're informed that you have to you're being trespassed, which they're telling you right now, you can't be here. >> If you refuse to leave from there, you can be placed under arrest for defined trespassing. >> So I'll just make this easy. We'll bring you across to the mall. You can figure out how they're going to find you later. I If you have a phone number for somebody, I'll let you call them. >> But either way, you can't stay here. So, let's start making our way either out this way or out the front entrance. >> No, he's coming up. >> All right, I'll leave. I'm not leaving with you guys, though. >> We're not leaving until you leave. >> You can you could walk. We could follow you till till the >> till you're off this property, >> where that's off the the property. >> All right. You >> after that, you can do your thing. >> All right. Y'all can go that way and I can go this way. >> That's not how it works. We have to make sure you leave the property. That's it. >> No. >> All right. Well, you can either leave the property, like we said, you're going to be placed under arrest. >> No, I'm not doing I'm not doing that. >> Why you going to make this harder than what it is? It's literally as simple as you just leaving and then we'll all be on our ways. But you can't stay here. >> No, I'm good, sir. >> All right. Well, then stand up. What's your option? You either leave right now or you're going to be placed under arrest. >> But I didn't do anything. >> You're being told right now you can't stay here and you're refusing to leave. >> All right. I heard you already. >> So, let's go. >> You heard us, but you're not listening. >> At this point, they've given him every opportunity. However, the next thing out of his mouth confirms that this conversation is over. >> I'm about to leave. >> Okay. So, let's go. Let's leave. >> No. All right. Y'all can go that way and I'll go this way. >> All right. Stand up. Stand up. Let's go. >> Are you touching me? Stand >> because let's go. >> Stand up. >> Stop touching me. >> Let's go. >> All right. >> Stand off. >> You leaving or no? We gave you so many tries, bro. >> What's the deal, man? >> No, man. I'm waiting to leave. >> Now we're coming up. So, >> is this theirs, too? Their towels. >> Yeah. Hey, is this your guys towels? You can keep them. >> You can keep them. All right. Now, you can keep those here if you guys don't mind. >> You have any ID on you? >> No. >> Okay. What's your name, bro? This point now we have to know your name. You're going to get inquiry fingerprinted either way, so you might as well just tell us your name. All right, >> Alpha 9, dispatch. We got one under. Now it's time for the search. The officer begins a routine pat down before getting him into the back of the patrol car. >> Is there anything on you that's going to poke or stick me when I search you? 119. You good up there? You need another unit? >> Yeah, we're good. I'm about to load them up. Any weapons or anything like that on you? What's all this stuff? >> Stop touching me, man. >> I'm searching you if I have to. You don't have your phone on you. Is there pockets in these in these sweats? These have pockets on them. Yes or no? Come on, man. Why are you making this trip about that? >> He doesn't put up a fight as they walk him to the cruiser. Something the officers don't take for granted in a case that could have gone differently. >> With the belt, >> it'll move. I'll move. Got it. Watch it. You good? All right. Those are definitely from here. I'm about to check now. I think. >> Yeah, I'll throw them out when we get down. Can't over here anywhere. Yeah, I shouldn't put those. They should all fit anyways. Thanks, sir. All right. Alpha 9 transport one mail under from the Hilton to headquarters starting mile when you're ready. >> In the end, he's charged with defiant trespassing [music] and obstruction. Two charges that could have been avoided with just a little cooperation. Number three, officers check a supposedly empty home and find an uninvited guest. On January 4th, 2025, officers responded to a report [music] of potential trespassers, possibly armed, inside a vacant property. What followed was a careful [music] search through the unknown. >> Go behind the door. >> Huh? >> Behind the door [snorts] gun smells like here. It does. It smells like here. Do you guys smell it? [snorts] >> It does. But also, this plant was not there last time. >> No, it wasn't. >> Are we going down or we want to go up? >> We'll hit We'll hit the basement first. >> All right, I'll stay here. What's up? It goes through. [snorts] They probably busted in to grab whatever they wanted and got the hell out. >> Get it. All right. >> Tie that. >> Yeah. >> Third floor. We got to go third floor. You guys went all the way down? >> Yes. >> All right. Is that camera? >> No. I don't know what it is, but it's not camera. >> Oh, don't forget there's a There's mice in the kitchen to the right, Joe. >> The building is massive, and early into the search, they spot dangerous weapons stashed inside. With that discovery, officers proceed with caution and eventually find someone hiding in one of the rooms. >> Stand up. >> A little bit. >> Slowly. Keep your hands off. >> Is that Presto? >> Who else is in here? >> Just me. >> Walk this way slowly. against that wall back. [snorts] >> Pardon me. >> Nothing on you is going to poke me. Sick me savvy. >> No, sir. >> No. No deal. Nothing. Nothing. Here. >> How'd you get in here? >> One of the doors was open. >> The um the one on top of the building just >> Yeah. >> Just changing your pocket. >> Yes. Yeah. >> Two officers remain with the man while others continue to search the rest of [music] the property. He insists he's alone, but the officers still need to confirm that for themselves. In the meantime, the officers ask the suspect more questions. >> There's no one else in here. >> How long you been in here? >> About a week. >> A week? >> Why here? >> Nowhere else to stay. [snorts] You can't you can't just squat here, man. This is private property. Someone owns this. You can't just come in and lay down and make a bed for yourself. You can't do all that. >> That's why we get sent here so often. >> You know anything about that window out there? >> About a damaged window? >> No. >> No, that wasn't you. >> Do you know if other people have been trying to come in here outside of you? >> I know somebody else did. I don't know who it was, though. >> Okay. No one's been in here since you've been here for about a week. No. >> Okay. >> [sighs] [snorts] >> I'm just going to go to the hallway here. Go over here. >> You have shoes. You have shoes in there. In there. >> Okay. Brown boots. You just slip them on or what? Watch out for the glass, dude. >> I'll just slip them on. >> Anything else you need from here? >> Huh? >> Anything else? >> No. >> No. All right. >> Work it out? >> I'm good. >> You been working out? >> No, those aren't mine. They were in here. >> All right, we'll go. >> All the stuff was like this when I came in. >> Yeah. No, I fine. coming out. [snorts] >> See one second. Where'd he go? >> I'm going to check if they're back there. >> Where you guys at? Schmidt. All right. Well, I don't know where it went. He's been calm and cooperative. So, the officers return the favor, giving him a rundown of what's ahead as they lead him out to the patrol car. >> Where else are you standing at, man? >> What's that? >> Where else you stand? >> Where else? >> Yeah. >> Chicago train station. It's going to be a phone number. >> Well, we're going to do the uh >> Yeah. notice. >> Fight sight notice. Let's >> Yeah. >> So, let's that out. I don't think we need to hold do that, >> right? >> Yeah. I'll go to the car. >> I'm not I'll uh I'll call Schmidt, see if he's good with that, and then we can we can knock [snorts] that out of here just so we can get back to it. Hey, uh you good if we do this site notice uh trespass and then cut him? >> Okay, we're going to get going on that then just so we can um get him out of here. >> All right, let's do that. All right. >> Are you able to Is this just push out? >> Yeah, push out. >> Throw them in the back of your squat for now. >> So, basically get court date. >> Pardon me. >> You going to get a court date? >> Bridge view. Yes. >> 1220. You can close me out. >> I'm parked right here. >> Put them in here. I don't got a cage. That's the only thing. >> Oh, we'll put them in we'll put in uh >> Yeah. I Otherwise, I wouldn't sto in mine. >> Mine's all the way up there. >> Yeah. So, at least you're not cold, man. You know, >> it'll be about 10 15 minutes and then you'll be good to go. All right. >> You're not going to the station or anything like that. >> You good? >> Yeah. >> All right. Watch her. The man was ultimately charged with trespassing. Number two, woman chose the wrong place to sleep and made it worse by fighting officers. In this next case, officers responded to a call on December 5th, 2024 about a woman reportedly sleeping in front of a store entrance. Here's what the officers found when they arrived at the scene. Good morning. Carol. Carol. [snorts] Carol. Carol. What time is it? >> We need you up. All right. >> What time is it? >> We're getting complaints that you're sleeping here. Why you bother me tonight? >> It's not up to us. >> What's your date of birth? >> What's your date of birth? >> Why? >> Okay. You say your last name Monado. >> Yeah. >> Frank. >> The suspect is identified as 62year-old Carol Maldonado. But when officers try to confirm the rest of her details, it quickly becomes clear she's not going to make it easy. >> Let me think it's getting ripped up. Leave me alone. >> Your last name for me. >> No, >> you figured out how to spell it. >> All right. Well, you have to get up. >> Carol, you got to get up, Brian. >> No, I'm not getting up. >> I'm sorry. You got to get up. Come on. >> No, [snorts] >> you have to. >> Why? >> Because you can't sleep in front of this building. >> I'm here last night. I'm here today. I'm here every day. You want you want to get taken over to the warming shelter? >> No. >> All right. Well, you got to get up. All right. Trying to help you. Okay. >> Not trying to help me. You can bother me. >> Yeah, you could. >> I'm here every night. No one bothers me except you people sometimes. >> Go to the hospital. [snorts] >> Excuse me. >> You want to go to the hospital? >> No. >> You get a warm bed there. >> No, you'll be in the hospital. >> Carol. >> And if you buy me ticket, I'm going to rip it up. >> Come on, Carol. We're getting complaints from the business people that you know have business here. They don't want you sleeping here, so you have to go. All right, we ask you nicely, do you need medical attention? You can go to the hospital or do you want to go to the warming shelter? >> We probably could see if we could take you to the woman shelter in Kney. Would you like that? >> Come on, Carol. >> Listen, you can close your ears all day. You got to go. All right. According to these stickers on here, they're all class two bikes. She >> all she has to do is leave. However, Carol refused immediately. She's standing her ground and turning what could have been a quiet exit into something more difficult. Yeah, she get the place under. >> Yeah, that's where we're trying to get up with her. She got her hair scuffed right now, but I'll explain that to her. Yeah. So, I got um write it down. Just give it to me over there and then I'm going to try to get her social for you. >> I'm not I'm not taking that. >> All right. >> And it's not illegal. She's outside. I'm not taking that. >> You can't sleep in front of a business. You're trespassing. [screaming] >> Stay here. Carol, >> leave me alone. >> You go somewhere else. Just not here. Okay, >> leave me alone. >> Just not here. >> All right, Carol. >> No, just [snorts] I wish I could, but I'll stay here. Okay, >> I'll rip it up. >> I got permission to stay here for number one. Say I asked him if I can stay here. >> Harold, what's your social? >> Go yourself. How about that one? >> All right, listen. You got two options. You provide me your social, you'll be issued for define trespassing or you can be placed under arrest. Which one? >> You want to be placed under arrest for Henry? >> Okay. You want to be placed under arrest? >> I know. >> I know. >> Why? I know they know the answer. Yes, sir. She's denying it. She's found us that it's not illegal to sleep outside and she got her hands. She's saying she doesn't even want to listen to anything ever saying to her. Um, we're trying to help her, but she's denying our help. Carol, listen to me. What's your ass? >> Well, she was warned about >> Carol. Carol or No. Carol keeps quiet, refusing to answer even the most basic questions. At this point, the officers have had enough. They're making the arrest. And now the real challenge is getting the cuffs on. >> You going to provide your information or no? Okay. >> All right. Come on, Carol. >> All right. You going to >> touch me? I'll speak. >> You going to provide your information or no? >> Carol, if you don't give us your information, you're going to you're going to get arrested. Don't touch it. >> Let's go. >> All right, we're going to have a female 1025. >> Put your hands behind your back. >> Stop resisting. >> Carol, stop resisting. >> Stop resisting. >> Carol, stop resisting. >> Walk for me. I'm allowed to sit down. I got it. >> Stop resisting. >> Take it easy. from me. >> Get on me. >> All right, cool. Face the wall. You got anything on you that's going to poke us or stick us? >> No. >> Okay. >> Stop kicking on me. >> Do not kick me. [sighs] >> 32. >> Do not kick 48 94. >> Don't spit. >> 109. She's spitting on us and she's kicking us. >> You have anything on you that's going to focus or stick us? >> Do not spit. >> I'm out of here. Calm down. >> No. >> Be a lot easier if you stop resisting. >> My stuff. >> She's now in restraints and the officers carefully walk her toward the cruiser. A female officer is on the way to handle the search. >> My stuff. >> We'll get it. I got it. >> You don't belong. >> Yeah, I got her. You want me? >> Get in the car. >> No. >> 3 2 1 You heard me. Stop. You Even from the back seat, Carol isn't done shouting at officers to retrieve her belongings from the store entrance. Despite the trouble she caused, they collected her boxes and bags. But before loading anything in, they check for anything dangerous inside. >> We're going to get it. >> Carol, what's wrong? Just got to search. >> Can't look through here. We have to bring it towards her. >> Oh yeah. Okay. Got it. >> Search your mirror. What happened? >> Huh? >> What happened? Be nice. Be nice. They gave you they gave you ample chances to comply. >> No, don't worry. They're they're >> And this is every day with her. The last time she told me, "Yo, go you." Like, >> she was sleeping in there, right? >> Yeah. She just curses us out all the time. Can't keep my ass slide. >> Don't worry. They're taking they're taking care of your stuff. Don't worry, they're getting all your stuff together. Relax. >> You're not allowed there. [snorts] >> Don't worry. Now I just have a few more officer meters I had for us to search a third more. [snorts] >> So we're heading for that quarter now. >> I know. But The officer gives her a chance to speak up about any medical concerns, but Carol uses it to take a jab at the officers. What follows doesn't help her case. >> Carol, do you need any medical attention? >> No. >> You'll be You'll be in the hospital. >> Okay. Thank you. >> Terrorist attack. >> And I tell you, you'll be the >> Okay. without it. >> You got me. >> What's up? 202560.2560.2 20 I'm just going to put my mask on so he doesn't spit on me. >> All right. Come on, Carol. You want your shoes on first? >> Yeah, please. I'd like to have my shoes first. >> I'm going to give you the courtesy for that. Okay. If you start kicking, we're not going to put on your shoes. >> All right? >> So, think wisely. >> Shut. >> I'm doing this for you, okay? >> You're lucky I You're lucky I'll kick you. I heard you. >> You're in the foot. The search goes smoothly under the female officer's lead. With that out of the way, Carol is taken into one of the holding cells. >> Yeah, you should >> undress them. Why don't you >> finish it in here? >> So, we can just cover her to the bench when she's done. >> She got to take off those jackets anyway. >> Over here. Over here. >> Just watch it, please. Face the wall, Carol. The wall's that way. >> I don't care. >> Face the wall. You're going to face that way. It's not what you want to do. I don't care what you care about. >> You're addressing me here. >> Yep. We're taking off your jackets. Everything's coming off of you. >> I got on me. It doesn't matter. Yes. >> I need to take [snorts] >> my I told you I never on the wall. >> On the wall. Put the hand on the wall. Put the hand on the wall. Just put the hand on the wall. >> Hand on the wall, too. That one, too. It's got to go on the wall. >> Put it on policy. Put on the wall. >> It's not that It's not that hard. >> I'm going to give you a hard time. You know that, don't you? >> Okay. >> All right. Well, there's going to be more charges for you. >> Take off this. >> What are you doing with my jacket? >> I'm going to give back to you. >> No, you're not. Listen. >> Give me back my stuff. Is there on this one? >> To keep things under control, the officers secure one of Carol's wrists to the metal chair. In doing so, they spot the accessories she's wearing. Following protocol, the officers ask her to remove them. But instead of complying, she suddenly makes it clear that she's not done being difficult. >> I got somewhere. >> Second. >> You got to take off this. Hold on. >> No. >> You got to take it off. You have to take it off. >> No. >> You have to take it off. >> Take it off. >> You have to take it off. You have to take this off. >> We're not We're not going to break it. You have to take it off. You have to take it off. >> I'll take it off. Don't break it. >> Take it off. We're not going to break it. >> We're not going to break it. You got to take it off. >> MY FRIEND THAT DIED GAVE THIS TO ME. >> You got to take all this off. You got to take off the watch, too. >> You have to take it off. Carol, >> Carol, you got to take it off. Okay. You're going to get it back. All right. >> You got to get it back. That's your problem. >> When? >> Once you get released, we'll give it back to you. >> When? >> Today. When you release? >> Yeah. When you release, you will give it back to You got to take it off. >> Carol. Carol, listen. >> My friend gave me >> I understand, but you have to take it off. Carol, Carol, look at me. Carol, [laughter] listen. I'm gonna PUT IT RIGHT THERE. You don't gave it to me. Don't die. >> I know. I'm sorry. Listen. I'm going to put it right there so you can see it. Okay. I'm put it right there. >> He gave it to me. >> Okay, girl. I'm sorry. But look, look. I'm going to put it right here. Right here. Okay. It's not going to go anywhere. >> Come on. >> All right. It's going to be right here. [laughter] We'll get it off. >> Carol's initial charges included only one count of trespassing and resisting arrest. However, things escalated quickly. After being cuffed, she was also charged with aggravated assault and with throwing bodily fluids at law enforcement. Number one, officers confront a man's disturbing behavior and shut him down fast. In our final case, officers responded to an overpass where a tent had been illegally set up. With the area clearly being used as a makeshift camp, they move in to address the situation. Here's how the encounter unfolds. >> Get out of the tent. >> One across the trash, the other bridge. I got one over here in the tent underneath the overpass, buddy. Come out of the tent. Let's go. >> You're going to piss me off. Come on. Come out of the tent. 1016. >> All right. I'm going to give you one chance. Come out of tent. Otherwise, you're getting tased. Oh, he's not even in here. Well, that means he ran this way and he's hiding over here. >> No, that means he ran this way. He's hiding over here. Walk that side of the tracks. >> Walk this side of the tracks. parallel me >> this side. Cody, this brush here, >> can you call them back and have them make >> the tipster's details give officers something solid to work with still in a place like this? Finding one person in the dark is far from easy. >> No, he was wearing all black. >> All right, I'm going to cut up his tent. >> He's clearing fired out of granite. >> Believe the other suspect ran to 4,0001.
