Scammers are used to tricking people, but in these cases, they walk straight into a trap they never saw coming. Here are five cases when scammers take the bait set by police. Number five, scammer tries lying his way out of trouble, but the police already knew the truth. On January 17th, 2023, Florida officers were sent to a Chase bank after reports came in about a man attempting to pull a scheme by impersonating a customer. Unbeknownst to him, internal warnings had already been circulated between banks, alerting staff to his pattern. Officers later spotted him in a nearby parking lot. And here's how they moved in. >> How's it going? Someone by me. I didn't know you were pulling me over. >> No, we trying to talk to you. So, how's it going? Good. What's your name? Well, we got a call from the Chase Bank about you in there trying to withdraw money from an account that is not yours. >> No, I was with my friend that was in the parking lot as well that they tried to withdraw money, but I was with them. >> So, where's your friend now? >> Uh, in the parking lot of Chase trying to get money. I guess they were trying to take money out. >> Hey, let's get another unit to the Chase bank. Supposedly, the subject is still there. >> And this one saying that that's his friend. >> It wasn't me. According to this guy, he's going to be a red Honda boss. That was second party driving out of here. >> All right. Um I know him from full sale. I went to full sale with him and I hadn't seen him in a while and he wanted to buy a PlayStation that um PlayStation 5 that um I was selling because I have two of them. >> I was waiting and waiting. I said I want to do it at a public place and when I was at the public place um at the public place um he was waiting too long and then I pulled out and left. >> Okay. >> Well, we'll get this straight out. All right. >> That's fine. >> Why not? That's all it took. >> Can you roll this window down too? >> All the way so I can see inside. >> Why do you want to see inside my vehicle? I'm not doing anything. >> I want to be able to see your hands while he's busy. >> My hands are right here. >> No down here. >> No, I'm not playing games. You He's He's This officer is being nice to me and you're telling me he was telling me there something about taking money out of a chase. I'm like, I didn't take any money. I got my chase right here. >> That's fine. But for our safety purposes, I need the window to come down cuz your window tent is too dark. >> My hands are right here. And the windows aren't too dark. They're illegal. Maybe my hands off. >> All right. Just relax. >> Thank you. >> You'll be all right. >> Pulling you over scared the out of me. I don't get pulled over. [laughter] I've never been arrested. I don't do anything like that. So when I see cops behind me, I'm like, "What the?" As officers question the man, a separate team remains at the bank, coordinating with management and arranging for someone to confirm the suspect's identity. >> Description on the guy. >> Um, we don't have access to the video requested. >> He's 5'7. He's thin build. >> He's like around his height. >> Yeah, my height. Um, and it's probably early 40s. Early 40s. >> Like orange type tan, you know, like >> a spray tan. >> Spray tan. Spray tan. Blue dress shirt. Floral pattern. >> Yeah. It was a F. Okay. It was floral. He's saying floral. >> Yes. Uh he's got a Jeep. American flag on the color. >> That's a Jeep though. >> A red Honda. >> Who was in a red Honda? Was there another person in a red Honda? >> I think that's a bogus story. He said >> just try to get us somebody else. >> Um he's wearing a black hoodie and he has catchy pants. Uh catchy pants and black. >> But I did join the bank, too. I was in the bank as well. long jeans that are like washed. They're not dark. They're lighter color shoes yet. >> They look like white. >> Maybe not clean them though. >> You want to go take a look at this guy and tell me if it's him or not. All right, jump in the car. >> All right, I'll take care of you. >> 631 or 639. Just signal 14. He's probably telling a lie. >> As in there is no other person. >> That's 104. 104. Yeah, I think you just said that. Just try to get out of it. >> Yeah. All right. You complete a statement for you guys have access to your video. No, we don't. >> Okay. We know of requested or something like that. Have to request you. >> We will complete a statement real quick. >> Statement for you. >> Sure. >> 636. I'm in route with one manager for a show. >> I get in the back. >> Yeah. Sorry. >> Bank staff say they have no doubt about who he is. And with surveillance footage on file, they're ready to prove it if he tries to claim otherwise. >> So people in the bank could verify that you were there with somebody else. >> Am I missing? So the one guy I was talking about my I was talking to him about my account um with my Chase um Southwest card and then um Jeffy was talking to another guy and then he went to the drive-thru and then when I came outside um I said, "What's going on? What's taking so long?" Um and then he was in the car still. I pulled out but he was still there. So I assume he was still there dealing with them. I don't know. The last I saw him, he was in the car outside cuz he was going to go from the child. >> He said that he needed a check in like a check made out for $5,000. Gave me the temporary ID and kind of right away. >> You give me a second and make a phone call, right? So, I I just want to clear something up. I wasn't asking you to roll the window down to be mean or to be rude. For our safety purposes, it is so dark I literally cannot see through it unless I'm looking over. That's why I wanted you to roll it down. I wasn't trying to be a douche. >> So, I don't I So, here here's the thing. I don't want to have to sit forward this far just to be able to see on the car. >> Be a black Toyota versus a Chevy. Negative injuries in the parking lot. Hey, Antonio. Can you just do me a favor? I'm just just going to ask you to step out of the car real quick. You >> just said to me, "Don't talk to the police. That's on you." >> That's okay. We'll take a look at it. >> Sure. >> Step out of the vehicle, >> huh? >> Yeah. Okay. >> And then uh just finish that way. Does >> Yep. That is >> That's a positive ID. >> All right, you're good to go. Have a seat back in the car. Hold on, hold on. Because before you get a caught, let me take a picture of you, sir. >> For now, the suspect insists he's done nothing wrong, but the officers aren't rushing. They're carefully collecting the evidence they need. >> I'm wondering now what that text meant from. And uh once you get in the car, >> Yep. >> I'll put my hands right out there cuz he keeps when you went away, he was like trying to tell me to like throw up. I'm like, I'll put my hands right out the door. >> Just let me see the text he sent you if you don't mind. I'm not even going to let it back some >> texted other people. >> Yeah, I texted my mom. She said, "What are you doing?" >> Let me go back to my text. So, you want to take a text from here? This is the text that I got after I said, "What's going on with uh somebody else text me?" Um, if you talk to the I know what that polo, but I know what that means. It's on you. So, I'm not sure what that meant. >> So, can you can you clear that so I can see who was a sender? >> These are the texts that I got from him right now. What's this number? >> I did that. It's just about all I can remember. Um, I don't know. I don't know. >> Is this sufficient? >> Thank you. >> Oh, you haven't seen back. >> I can write him back and be like, can I say should I not do that? >> Ah, don't do it. That's right. >> Now it's weird. Put on. >> Yeah, he didn't sign that. Leave that in there for Kyle. >> Sorry. >> Oh, look. See, look. Um, and stay out of my And stay out of my This is Brian. And stay out of my business if you know what's best, bro. >> So, obviously he's hiding something. >> Yeah. >> Why don't you guys call him? >> Um, I don't know what they've done so far. They've been doing other things. Well, we we've been over here talking. >> I was going to say that. And that just came in just now. 428. just now and stay out of my business if you know >> Hey German, he just texted him again. >> He said stay out of my business if you know what's best, bro. >> Look, right when I'm right when I'm on the phone with somebody else, look. And stay out of my business if you know what's best, bro. And I don't even know what that's supposed to mean. What business? >> The man claims he was simply there to meet someone else for a transaction, denying any knowledge of bank related activity. He even insists the man is texting him until officers trace the number to a medical facility. And to make matters worse, bank footage shows he walked in alone. >> See, at my business, we know what's best. But >> so I'm like, that's obviously shady. >> See, the problem I'm having with that number is I I do a cross reference and it's coming to a medical facility. >> Medical facility. >> Yeah. How they texting me from it? >> Well, these officers will be with you. >> No problem. No problem. >> Medical facility. How? >> Sir, you do me favor. Step out of the vehicle. >> Read this person to ask your question. >> All right. You have the right to remain silent. Do you understand? >> Say that. >> You have the right to remain silent. Do you understand? >> All right. Anything you say can and will be used against you. >> While you're doing this, >> you can turn it off. I'm not going to look at it. >> Do you understand? What's up? You have the right to talk to a lawyer before and during questioning. Do you understand? >> You can afford a lawyer and want one. One will be provided. >> Speaking of race, am I am I getting arrested or something? >> He's going to have to ask you questions. >> Oh, I was like, sure, >> but he has to advise you legal rights to me for now. Okay. >> If you >> I've never had this happen. That's why I'm asking. I've never been in trouble with the police in my whole life. That's why I'm asking. >> If you cannot afford a lawyer and want one will be provided for you before questioning without charge. Do you understand? >> Yes, sir. >> Has anyone threatened you or promised you anything to get you to talk to me? >> No. Okay. He >> texted to say not to talk to you, but that's >> while I was talking to police officer. >> Okay. So, I'm going to be the main officer on this call. Yes, sir. >> So, can you just tell me what happened today? >> From the beginning. >> Yeah. >> Um, from the beginning, um, I went to full sale, um, for two years. I knew some I have a PlayStation 5 that I was going to sell. Um, had a couple of them that have already sold before since they've released. Um, so I I posted in the forums on the, um, uh, alumni forums uh, Reddit thread um, about having a laser sale is going to sell. So, um, >> um, Jeffree said that he wanted to buy one. He messaged me. At first, I didn't know who it was. Um, and then I said, "Oh, I know who this is." Um, because, um, I've known him before, like four or five years ago when I went to school. In passing, I knew who he was. >> Meeting an old acquaintance at a bank isn't the most common request. But for now, it's the version of events the suspect continues to push. >> I said I wanted to meet him at the bank. Um, I at first I said I was going to meet him at Bank of America. Um, but then he said they need to move over here to this bank because he had to get money out. I got here first and then um he got there, he went in, I went in. I was talking to one um teller at the window about my account um my Southwest Airlines Chase rewards card that I have and then the other window he was dealing with him. He got out of the bank and then he went through the drive-thru as I stood inside. He was taking forever and stuff. I came out of the bank and I said to him, "What's going on?" Cuz he pulled back around. I said, "What's taking so long? What are you doing?" He goes, "Oh, never mind. Never mind. U never mind about the deal. Never mind about the deal." I'm like, "But what's going on? Why would you say that when you have me drive all the way here?" He goes, "Never mind. Never mind." Okay. I pull out um to the right over here this way. He was still there at the bank um in the car. Um and then as I'm pulling out this way at the light to make a right on this street um the officer, I think it was this officer had the lights on and pulled me over and was asking me um what if on did I try did I try taking money out of the bank? And I said no. >> You said okay. You said you were doing business at the bank. Um, I did not take any money out of the bank and I did not try to. I was speaking about my Chase rewards card. I think I have it or you have you still have it or I have it. But I was speaking about my Chase account. Um, my Southwest Airlines rewards card. Never asked to take money out or nothing. But I was there with him. And then at first it wasn't suspicious to me. That guy's always suspicious, but now what's suspicious about it is as I was talking to the officer, I'm getting the text messages in saying, "Oh, if you talk to the police that's on you. Um, talk to the police that's on you." Um, and I forget what else. Um, it's in the phone. He denies making any check transactions at the bank and for the moment officers let him speak without interrupting his story. >> It's on you and all this dumb stuff with when it's like I told him if you have so please talk to the police. If you're being honest, why can't you talk to the police? So that part >> at any point today did you fill out a check withdrawal? >> A check with >> a check for withdrawing of money. >> No, I did not fill out any check withdrawals. I had my card though there. I had my card there and I wait a check withdraw. No, no, but I did my um I was dealing with my Chase um Southwest Airlines card, but I did not do that. >> You didn't any paperwork or >> I think I did sign for my check um for not a check, but for my Chase rewards um to get my loyalty um reward balance. I think I did sign something to get my balance, but not a check. Not nothing for a check. I signed >> to withdraw any money. >> No, absolutely. >> Not signing a physical check, but to withdraw money from an account. >> Withdraw money. I did not withdraw any money from my account. No, I did not. I think the only thing I signed was my um was my Chase rewards um to check your loyalty balance. When you're a Southwest member, you can do that. Yeah, but I did not withdraw. That's what he asked me at first. I said I did not withdraw any money. >> What What ID did you use today to present to the bank? >> I didn't I didn't have an ID. Wait, did I have my Oh, wait. Um I don't think I did my ID, so I slid my um I slid my rewards card. I didn't have I didn't have no ID. I just have Chris ID. But I don't even think I showed them my ID. I just had my rewards. Um, >> I you had my I showed him though. I did show the officer my my chase. >> You can keep your hands out of your pocket for now. Okay. >> And all I did was slide it on the thing and then um that was it. But I did not withdraw any money or anything like that. No, I did not. I was actually hoping that he would so that I could sell the PlayStation and he was following me to my house. But it just felt weird um to me when I was um talking to him. He goes through the drive-thru after after he's inside and then I come out and he goes, "Well, never mind. Never mind." So I'm like, I don't understand. But then now it all makes sense. >> All right, sir. So So we spoke to a different branch manager today. Okay. >> Sure. >> In Orlando. >> Sure. >> They described you. They didn't describe your friend. They described you same way they described you right now. They said the person with a with a tan comb over here and the the flower shirt. >> Once he realizes he's been identified by a manager at another Chase branch, his calm starts to slip. The man now backtracks on his earlier denial and admits he tried to make a withdrawal. >> Why would anybody not? I did not go to any I went to this bank. Wait, did I go to any other branch? No, I didn't go to I went to another bank today, I think this morning, but I didn't go to this I didn't go to this bank. >> I'm not saying I'm not saying this bank. >> Oh, >> you went to you went to another bank in Orlando. >> I withdraw money. I have money in my pocket. I did withdraw money today. Um I did withdraw money today from my bank of um this morning. I did withdraw money this morning cuz I have cash on me. But um no, I did not um go to any I did not go to this bank ever before. Just now with him and that's it. And I did not withdraw any money from this bank whatsoever or even try to. >> Okay. >> Um I did go in Orlando near my house though to a bank um this morning. I did. >> Yes. By myself. Not with anybody. By myself. >> All right, sir. So at this time we're we're going to place you under arrest. You understand? >> For what, though? >> Okay. We have enough uh enough evidence right now to place you under arrest. >> And I didn't do anything, officer. >> For attempting to take money right now. Okay. >> No, I really didn't. officer. You guys are supposed to be the ones that if you don't do anything wrong and you tell the truth. I've never been in trouble in my life and I didn't take any money from anywhere. >> They described you to a tea >> and I took money out of an account. >> So did the other bank location. >> I took money out of an account. >> Oh, you attempted to. Okay. So, do me a favor. Put your hands behind your back. Turn around for me. >> My car off. >> Oh, we'll do we'll take care of that. Just turn around. Put your hands behind your back. >> Why am I getting arrested? >> Turn around. Put your hands behind your back. I'm not asking you. Okay. >> Oh my god. >> Can you help your fingers for me? >> Yeah. I don't understand why I'm being arrested for something I didn't even do. >> Can I call my spouse to come get my vehicle and leave it so it's not towed? >> We could work on something like that. >> Yeah. >> The car is being parked right now. So >> Well, can I roll up my window and put my car off so nobody goes into my car? I don't want anybody. >> Going to take care of that. Okay. >> Well, can I do it? >> No. >> No, you cannot do it. >> Well, can I watch you guys turn off my car? >> You can do that. >> You can watch from here. >> Thank you. It's a stick shift. So, I have to roll up the window right here. And that thing has already been broken. Um, I don't understand, officer, why are you guys arresting me when I really didn't do anything? Oh, >> I really didn't. >> He may sense that his story doesn't hold up. But he still believes that sticking to his innocence will somehow clear his name. But with cuffs already on, it's clear that the plan isn't working. If you guys can do more research or something, I swear to you, please do your research cuz I've never been First time in my life I'm getting arrested and it's going to be something I didn't do. I swear to you I didn't. I don't lie. >> Who could we call? >> Um, you call my spouse. Brian, >> how do you unlock your phone? >> It's a passcode or phone. >> Well, what why do I want to unlock my phone now? You want to call your wife out? >> Oh, yeah. Let me see. Yeah. Make sure we do a pat down. >> What? >> Do a pat down. >> You're not going to talk to him right now. >> I can't talk to him. >> No, you'll get a phone call later on. >> But as of right now, I'm >> doing my phone then. >> We're just calling in regards to this. Okay. >> Rex, we're just calling in regards to your vehicle, right? We're trying to help you out. Okay. >> No, you guys are not. How rude is this? I'm going to call a lawyer then. >> I don't need you texting anyone. >> Well, because you guys are going through all Now's being rude to me. Do >> you know her phone number or who you want to come pick? >> Yes, my spouse. >> All right. What's the phone number? >> One second. cuz just then it looks like you want to text in again. >> Well, I was going to text him, but they're not supposed to. >> No, we're trying to call and get in here right now. >> Okay. Call, please. >> Can I ask why everybody's going through all my things in my car and all my wallet when >> your phone? We're trying to help you out right now with the vehicle. Okay. >> I'm not getting anybody permission to go through my vehicle without a search warrant. Please, I don't want everybody going through my stuff >> right now. >> But I'm not doing anything. >> Do you want me to call her or not? >> Yeah, him. >> Yes. Okay. >> But can you ask him not to go through all my stuff, please? Seven. >> I don't want anybody going to all my things. This isn't right. You guys one more time. >> And why does he keep going in my vehicle, sir, when I don't want anybody going in my vehicle without a search warrant? I'm not doing anything. >> He was the officer that was being mean to me at first, but now you guys are being rude to me for no reason. >> Hopefully, he picks up. >> Can you ask him why he's going without a search warrant in my vehicle? >> Back out of the vehicle. >> And I would like him to be out of my vehicle. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Okay. So he we're allowed to search the vehicle because you're being arrested and the vehicle is being towed. So he'd search the vehicle. >> It's not being towed. He's probably never requesting for someone to help him get up. >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> The officers are done questioning him. At this point, they're just waiting for him to call his supposed spouse to retrieve the car. But even that simple moment raises another concern. >> Still being searched incident to arrest. >> I don't understand why when I talk to you guys and I'm saying that you told the truth when somebody doesn't call. You want to leave a message? >> Brian, I'm with the police. Call me. >> All right. I'm going to put my vehicle. Come with me. I >> don't understand why I'm in the mailbox when I didn't do anything. >> Patient. >> So, here's another suspicious thing. That number he had he had you call called as Brian. >> That's a different number than he gave us for Brian earlier. >> And I didn't take anything from anyone. >> It's like if you're going to get in trouble first time in your life, you should at least get in trouble for something you do. And I didn't do nothing. >> Okay. You >> sure? Cool. >> I'm going to place you in my vehicle now. Okay. >> No. >> Step inside. Do you want a seat belt on? >> No. What about my money? Do I put it in my pocket? >> I have your money right now. >> Thank you. >> And it's on video camera that I'm receiving it. Okay. >> I'm going to put it into a bag. >> Get a bag. We'll get his phone. >> We'll let you make another call when we get over there. Okay. If you want to call anyone else. >> What do I I've never What do I do to get like What? Does somebody bail me out? I'm 30. I'm going to be 40 40 years. >> So, right now, right now, here, listen. We have uttered false instrument. Okay. >> What does that mean? >> That means you signed a deposit slip >> requesting for money. >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> But I Well, you didn't sign. >> Okay. >> You guys have We do. And we have two people that positively identified you. >> I signed a deposit slip. >> That's what we have. Okay. >> You need a withdrawal slip with Yeah. I'll clarify what it is, but that's what we're working with right now. Okay. And where are the keys to this? >> I know. >> Okay. >> I'm going to keep a lawn card key. >> Yep. >> And the rest you can take. >> All right. Just going to buckle you in right quick. >> The man faced charges for uttering a false instrument and misusing personal identification. But that wasn't the end. Just 8 months later, he was arrested again. This time for attempting an $800,000 withdrawal. Clearly, the lesson didn't stick. Number four, officers show a fleeing driver exactly why you don't try to run. On February 1st, 2023, officers in Milbour, New Jersey, followed a lead from a recent vehicle theft after the suspect reportedly started using the victim's credit card nearby. By tracking the transactions, they were able to close in. Here's what happened next. Interaction is being recorded. Body warn camera. Detective Royce detective Dros Melbourne. Police. You got ID on you? >> Yeah. >> Confirm street. >> You want to read it here? >> Yeah. Fair enough. I'm going to give you all all around. Listen, you got the right to remain silent. Anything you say you could be used against. Okay. I didn't do anything. All right, that's fine. Let the wait a minute. >> The director remain sound attorney >> 1113 pursuit. [ __ ] PURSUIT. GET ON THE GROUND. GET ON THE GROUND. PLEASE STOP. Hands behind your back. Put your hands behind your back now. Put your >> Put YOUR HAND BEHIND YOUR BACK. >> ALL RIGHT. I'M GONE. I'M the peppers for you. I'm put my head behind my back. Put it behind. >> What did I do to lock up now? What you did talking? I'm scared to go down. >> Yeah, well you got you. >> I don't have >> I'm not moving cuz you put the puss on me. I can't give me a second. You going to lock me up? >> I'm scared. I see. I know, man. I'm holding you. I'm scared. Yeah, I understand. I just came out my house. >> Trying to flee only made matters worse. And to make things more complicated, he's clearly not interested in cooperating with the officers. >> Hey, hey, I don't mean no harm. I'm nervous. >> Yes, I know >> what I'm going to jail for. Just tell me we're accounted for. We're good. Yeah, just constell down the block. I don't know. I got to go back to my car. >> Get up. >> What happened? T A F T. >> Stand up, dude. >> What did I do? >> You away with him, huh? Can you get It's >> Yeah. Can we get it? Yeah. Can you give us a car actually to Grove Street? And uh >> Yeah. Can you give me the ride to my car? Yeah, sure. The stolen vehicle is found not far from where the suspect was spotted. However, when confronted, the suspect gives a strange claim, saying a man in a ski mask gave him the credit card just the day before. The officers aren't buying it, and they make that clear. >> Yesterday, when the guys came up to the supermarket, >> your boy that you pounded, >> he said Monday or something, >> he gave you a credit card. >> He gave you the credit card. You went in, you rang the credit card up. He said he ain't had no ID. >> So he gave you his credit card to run it. >> Right. I just went and used it. >> Okay. Well, that does that make any sense to you? He's wearing a scheme mask. He gives you credit card says run it for me. I don't have ID. >> Right. Right. >> So you used a stolen credit card. That was from a residential burglary. >> I don't know. >> Well, you're getting charged with the credit card fraud. You're getting charged with resisting my flight. You're getting card with the possession. And I don't know what's going to happen yet for my partner's knees, but you might get charged with aggravated assault. >> Please don't. You always just got >> I know. I rather. Please. I just want >> Do you have warrants? >> No. I got to go to court and all that. I just lost my sister. Please. I understand. You should have ran with it. >> Wait. You used a stolen credit card, >> right? I don't Oh my god. >> You knew it wasn't right. >> I did not know. >> It looks like a duck. Quacks like a duck. It's It's a duck. >> I didn't even think about it. He said, "Use this credit card." >> Yeah. He's wearing a ski mask inside of a stolen car. Says, "Use this credit card. You run in there. No problem. Swipe the shit." >> It was a kid I knew. his father. >> Who? His name Lamar or something like that. >> Where's he live? >> I don't know where he live. >> You want to help yourself out? Where's he lay his head? >> I don't know exactly where he lived, though. >> You know his name. What's his last name? He wasn't with me. >> When I get back to headquarters, you can talk more about him. Okay. >> He's a 17-year-old kid. I don't even >> Okay. Well, clearly you know his name. Maybe you have his phone number. But when we get back to headquarters, we'll talk. You want to go home today with a court date or you want to go ask the county correction? >> I need to go home. >> Talk when we get to court. >> Did you call my girlfriend for me? >> Uh, the phone's in my car. >> Yeah, we have the phone. >> You just put us through all this. I'm not gonna bend over backwards for you right now. >> Right. Right. Understand? >> Right. Right. Right. >> Happens. Sometimes you win, sometimes we win. >> We will talk. >> We got a cage coming. >> Yeah. Forward. >> We're just waiting for Milbour to get down here. >> We're going to take you down to Milbour. You're going to get processed and you're going to go from there. >> Yeah. Milbour.
