So we'll we'll ask you some questions and then we'll try to get you out. So they're calling in cuz they're saying you're trying to do a fraudulent return. Can you tell me what's going on? I'm just buying Christmas gifts. Buying Christmas gifts? >> Yeah. Okay, so are you here to return anything tonight? >> Tonight with the Polaroid which I have a receipt for. You were returning the Polaroid? Yeah. Okay, when did when did you buy that? Uh I would say within the last 2 weeks. Last 2 weeks? Okay. And I bought the tablet. Which I don't know if he charged my card. The tablet? Yeah. >> From tonight or Tonight. Okay. Uh I have to check my credit card statement cuz I can't remember if he processed that. Okay. I don't think he did. No, because he was trying to get me to sign up for the The teller was? Yeah. Yeah, and so that's why we didn't go proceed with the transaction cuz he wanted to uh run my credit card my credit report so I could get 5% off of the purchase. Okay. Yes. Now detained, the suspect claimed she was only trying to buy and return items for Christmas gifts. So why do you think they're saying it's fraudulent? Did they say? Yeah. That's why they called. This is they said you were making a fraudulent return. I have no idea. Did you buy it at this Best Buy last time, the Polaroid? I I might have been. Did it say on the receipt? The Polaroid? Yeah. Oh, yeah. It says it. Yeah. I mean, I have a receipt for it. >> Any more questions you'd like to ask? Okay, I'll block off my right side. Um, so did you bring in the vacuum and the Polaroid today? Uh, yeah. Okay. So, when we review the camera footage it's going to show you entering the store with those two items. Yes. Okay. Did you go anywhere else but then the store or did you just go straight to the customer service speak down there? No, I browsed and did the switches and stuff. Okay. Um, did you still have anything else? No, only the tablet. Tablet? Oh, what kind of tablet? Uh, the Lenovo. The Lenovo. Okay. Um, they didn't have it out on the counter so I don't think they charged you anything like that. >> Yeah, that's it. So, yeah. Uh, on the cart. The cart? I put it in the cart. Uh, like that blue shopping cart right there? Yeah, the one I had. Okay. So, it'll show those two items in there. Uh, the items should match the serial numbers on the receipt, I'm assuming. You would think so, yeah. Uh, have you opened Have you opened them before? No. Uh, have you done anything like this in the past? No. Why would they say that you have done this before? I have no idea. Okay. Have they called the police before? They haven't got a case number. They haven't got that far yet. Um, why don't you grab that case number from that folder? The suspect doubles down on her account describing how she entered the store and carried out the return. Can you give me the lowdown on this gal just all together? Um, I've seen her today. We have this. Um, I have all of Mary's stuff also has case number on her. For her doing it over there. Which is why I I got myself involved this one. I'm like, we already lost enough. I don't want to lose anymore. Perfect. And you guys recognize her from the previous one? Oh, yeah. Yeah, we were comparing. Perfect. Um So, what do we have? Cook four. What do we have? Mhm. Attempted theft, too. Uh tonight, but well, she She's listed as a suspect as well. We recognize her from the previous one. So, we have theft for that one. Um is this a statement for today? For today. Yeah, could you include in there that you recognize her from the previous theft? Can you say case number and just write it in there? Yeah. Um Have you already did that? You may have. How do I say you got it pretty much at the top here? >> the subject. Perfect. Will you put the case number? >> She doesn't need uh You know? No, well, well, you already gave us that whole thing. Yeah, I get you. You get it? Um I'll be good. After hearing her side, the officers turned to speak with the staff who quickly confirmed this isn't her first time pulling something like this. Okay, so we watched the security footage and you did not walk in with either of the items. So, do you want to change what you said earlier? Did you walk in the store with those two items? Okay. Did you walk in the store and pick up those items and then go to the counter? Cuz they have it on video and we just watched it. No. No what? No idea. No idea? No, I have no idea. Okay, so what about the previous contacts? Cuz they have a running list of you coming into the store and kind of just pulling the same thing. All within this month. Yeah, because I'm I'm shopping for Christmas. Are you But you're coming in empty-handed and saying you want to return stuff that you took off the shelves. But I have receipts. Maybe for one purchase, but the other two times that's not the case. Excuse me. You what? Tonight the cameras caught you walking in empty-handed. Wait a minute. Do you have a lawyer cuz I need to go pick up my son. So, okay, we won't ask any more questions. You can search her. I'll sit in here. Thank you. Come on. Watch your feet. I ain't got no warning. your foot. And you ain't got no reason. Here's your uh Trying to stall the situation, the suspect flops to the ground, but the officers are already prepared for behavior like this. Sorry about that. >> That's okay. So, all we were trying to do is identify her so we could give her the proper trespass. She wanted to obstruct. So, that's why we had to take her in the forceful custody cuz she kept trying to obstruct us and get away from us. So, if any of your customers complain, refer them to me. I'll explain. Hopefully, they don't Most of them are on it. blame you for it. Uh You can refer them to me. Did Did that other officer Did he have a chance to get your name? No. Okay. Okay. So, she came in. Uh And they they called me over in the deli. She went over there first. Okay. Um teammates told me that she put her hands on them and were yelling at them. Okay. So, she did de-escalated it. I finally tried to get her to check out and just leave. She kept yelling. She said she wanted to check out up here. So, I escorted her. We stopped at floral. I tried to check her out there. Then she said she paid for I didn't even care about the ticket. I just wanted her to leave. Okay. And she just kept yelling. She came back over here started yelling at teammates again. I came back over here. That's when I told them over here to call police. Just have her removed. Okay. I gave her every opportunity to pay for it and leave. So, she made physical contact with some of your employees? Supposedly over in the deli. I haven't been able to verify it. Okay. Uh do you have camera footage? >> Probably. Uh that we could review. Um Do they want to press charges for battery or do they just want her gone? She's going to get charged too. I got her charged with all of She came up and was mad with another worker about Styrofoam plates. We don't have any. But they've been out for over 3 hours. So, when she got here, they already weren't there. She was mad saying that We one she was mad at went back there and started talking about her. But she went back there to tell everybody else we don't have any plates. So, when I heard she was cussing, I came around and she was in face talking up like saying you and you up and I'm coming for you all that. The staff's statement challenges her account, making it harder for her claims to hold up. So, I told her we haven't had any sour cream on plates for a while. And she got in my face and said, "No, I got the last one. You remember I got the last one." I said, "Okay, whatever, you know." I know she didn't, so I'm not going to argue. And when she got in my face, that's when I smelled her breath. And I know she Yeah. And that's when she like shoved me and she She didn't do it hard, but she Don't touch me. Did she kind of do like this or >> like a Well, you don't know. Okay. It wasn't like a attack, but it was Don't touch me, please. Okay. And so, that's when she kept getting more mad and I could tell it wasn't going to like get fixed, and I kept telling her it's all well, and she goes, "I'm fine, but you're not." And just kept saying stuff like that. And she kept coming back and just standing there. Okay. So, I called like and once I like she got even more mad and then started doing that all up in my face again. or ma'am, and she thought he said dude. Okay. So, she went really Yeah, and then that's when told me to just walk away and I stayed away since then. What? I talked to her, so I got your information. Um I'm going to take her to the station. And uh obviously she's already on the ban list here, so she's trespassing here. If she comes back, you see her, no you know, notify us. The investigation showed that the situation began with a suspect acting loudly and aggressively, ultimately leading to charges of battery, trespassing after warning, and resisting arrest without violence. This woman's lie didn't fool the cops. On September 28th, 2024, police were dispatched after a man was caught stealing and allegedly bit a loss prevention officer during the encounter. Here's how things play out. I'm a former applicant. Champaign Police Department, what's going on, man? He just stole bottles and he he bit me. Okay, do you need medical treatment? >> Yeah, I do. Okay. All right, go and stand up for me. I'm going to put you in handcuffs for the time being, okay? Go and place your hands behind your back. You good? Feeling dizzy. Am I under arrest? Well, probably, buddy. No. Stop moving, okay? I think that 750 that is a permanent uh loss prevention officer got bit in the hand. He's conscious, alert, and breathing, but he needs to fill out a medical form, and I want to do that thing. He put me in a choke. Well, that wasn't Well, he's security, man. Why'd you bite him? I didn't I've never put my hands on him. Okay. You have anything on you that might be concerning to me? No. All right, go and turn around. I'm going to go and search you real quick, okay? Just stand right there like that. I didn't bite him. You have any other needles in there that I should be aware of? Probably in this pocket. Am I under arrest? I told you probably, man. You bit him. I didn't. So, that's aggravated battery. He put me in a chokehold with my neck. I wasn't trying I'm going to photograph his kind of wounds. Huh? I'm going to photograph your injuries, his injuries, everything, okay? All right. Just be careful with it. I'm going to go upstairs you got all my permission, right? Okay, yeah. Well, give us 1 second after he's done. I'm going to grab my phone. I'm going to take a picture of your interview, okay? Trying to justify his behavior, the suspect claims all of it was just self-defense. Is that I've never been to jail on champagne. Is that I don't know for sure. to jail or to like a ticket? >> No, you go to jail for that. What's in that pill bottle? My prescription. Am I for sure going to jail? If everything that he said >> comes true. I mean, I got to hear you on the ground. So, I got to talk to you. But, the thing is is since you're in handcuffs and in my custody, I can't ask you questions till I read you your rights, okay? So, right now I'm not going to ask you any questions. We're going to search you and then I'm going to read you your rights and then I'll ask you questions, okay? Yeah, they I saw him. I know. You got it. Yes. I was wondering But yeah, um if you were able to stop by tonight, give you the hamburger back. Okay. Also, there's no possible way that I can pick it up. Excuse me. I don't think anyone else is Yeah, you're on the phone. Yeah, here it is. As he keeps mouthing off, officers search him and come across items that raise concern. Show me your ID, man. My It's What is it? Yeah. Sounds like they're here for you right now. I'll take pictures after. So, go go get cleaned up and everything. Yes. Thanks. Do you have anything in your back pocket that we should be aware of? Wallet. Any needles, anything like that? Is your ID in your wallet? Okay. >> Now, I know you said you got choked. Do you need medical attention for that? Are you injured anyway? Can I wait to answer that? You can wait to answer that, sure. >> I'm going to wait to answer that for a little All right. Now, can you lean forward for a second? Can you put your hands up for me? Okay. All right. Go ahead and turn around. I'm going to check your back pockets, okay? Does this come off easy or not? I'm just going to take it off for now, okay? Even with the accusation of being choked out, his lack of urgency suggests a different story. Yeah, get some rags. And then, can you grab my phone that's up in the cup holder and uh taxi. All right. And then, go ahead and Lean back up against that. You can face me if you want to, okay? Is there any chance of me not going to jail? Well, like I said, man, there's always a chance. But, obviously, I got to talk to him. I got to talk to you. So, I have to do an investigation at this point, okay? So, it depends on what I'm told by both parties. So, right now, I'm going to read you your rights, okay? And then, I'll talk to you, okay? You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in the court of law. You have the right to talk to a lawyer and have him or her present with you while you are being questioned. If you cannot afford to hire a lawyer, one will be appointed to represent you before any questioning if you wish. You can decide at any time to exercise these rights and answer questions or not answer questions or make any statements, okay? Do you understand the rights that I've explained to you? Yes. All right. So, what happened? Can I wait on him? Wait on him and see what he's going to say. Well, you want to wait for him to talk? He came up out of nowhere. I hadn't even left the aisle. And one sudden he put me in a choke hold. My neck's probably red. Put me in a choke hold and slammed me up against the shelf on the ground and pulled my hair and slammed my head against Okay. So, I mean, I'm just trying to go home. I don't And where's home for you? Well, I mean, for now I got some people in my apartment. I don't have any warrants as you'll find when you run my name. Okay. And I appreciate you giving me the heads up for that. Do you live here in Champaign or Urbana? I'm currently waiting to get into treatment. Treatment? For rehab? What are you going to treatment for? Okay. Does it needles have anything to do with that? I can't say. Okay. And what is exactly in that pill bottle? Cuz there's no All right. So, you have an ID in there? As the officer moves forward with the investigation, the suspect claims he was attacked and choked without any warning. So, what you're saying is he grabbed some alcohol and while you're walking away, he blindsided you, grabbed you from behind, pushed you up against the shelf, and had his arm around your neck. How did you guys get over here? Did you try to get away and then He slammed me up bounced my head off the floor, pulled my hair, and Are you Are you needing medical treatment for that? No, I'm just trying to go home as quickly as possible. Okay. >> Thank you. I got 75029 check. First off, do you have any prescriptions? So, what's this for? What prescription is this for? Thyroid. I'm going to put your Bible with your personal items, okay? The suspect continues to describe the alleged force used on him, but without injuries or a request for treatment is a now immediately raises doubts. Is this prescription Can you stand by with him? I'll tell you what, so we're not standing in here and having a whole bunch of people look at you, I'm just going to go put you in the back of my car for now, okay? Just grab that stuff for me and I'll take him out of here. Coat. Huh? That was my coat. Your coat? On the ground. Okay. Well, I'll grab that for you, okay? We're going to walk right over here. We're in that SUV, okay? So, it's the second car. All right, man. Just stand right here for me. I got to unlock the car. All right, man. Go ahead and take a seat in the back of the squad car. And just stand Sit right there for me, okay? All right, man. I'll talk to him real quick with what he's saying is true. He has no money in his wallet. Um so, I'm more than likely theft retail theft under which would just be an MTA but the fact that he bit him, which I got to get his statement as how that happened. Um nothing that he's wanted for today. We'll book him in. Thanks, buddy. After removing him from the scene, officers check his belongings and find his wallet empty, further backing up the allegations. So, um so, I you know, seen him grab like probably four or five bottles. Uh my what's it called? One of my coworkers, Jose, I told him to detain the guy. He wasn't going, so we tried to open hand and the guy slipped and he fell. And so, I told the guy, "You know what? I'm going to just have to detain you." He wasn't going at all, and The guy slipped and fell, this guy with >> Uh the guy with the bottles, yeah. He slipped and fell, yeah. And he That's when the bottles broke. And when he tried to, you know, or run off, I slipped on the freaking liquor, and I cut my hand with the glass. Okay. And as I was trying to detain him, he tried to throw bites at me. And that's when, you know, I grabbed him, and, you know, we both fell on the floor cuz it was like slippery, so I couldn't even barely move. Both were on the floor. I had him detained and all that, and I had his arm behind his back. >> Yeah. And that's when he bit me right here in for like five or six seconds or so. Okay. And then I told him, you know, "Don't bite me again." And then I just held him, you know, on the floor. Okay. Again. Do you mind if I take a couple pictures? >> Yeah, for sure, man. You know, we we had we was in a scuffle because I was just trying to detain him for that long as he couldn't run off. Yeah, cuz I I caught you like Do you have any medical history or anything? Uh no, not really. >> Nothing like Like no asthma or anything like that? Um I You allergic to anything? No. All right. You take any medications, even like over the counter over the counter stuff? No. All right. Just go and hold it still for me. So, right here is where he bit Yeah, right here with the bump is. All right. Are you guys going to be able to pull a video for us? Uh yeah, I just had to set up the whole thing right now. So, it'll probably take like five to 10 minutes. The loss prevention officer gives his account, explaining that the suspect was the one who threw himself to the ground while dropping the items he was trying to steal. So, what would you be looking at then? Are you one of the victims of him biting you? Yes, definitely, yeah. Yeah. The loss prevention officer's account, along with his visible injuries, contradicts the suspect's claims, leaving officers to decide how to move forward. All right. Can I ask him if he needs medical attention again before just making sure? All right, I'm asking you more time, man. Do you need medical attention for anything?
