Sovereign citizens believe they're untouchable. But as these cases reveal, being entitled doesn't erase handcuffs, citations, or a ride to jail. Here are five cases when entitled sovereign citizens think they're above the law. Number five, when claiming to be a sovereign citizen doesn't stop an arrest. On March 5th, 2024, officers in Florida noticed a vehicle parked at a gas station with an obstructed license plate. Not long after, they clocked the same car speeding 10 mi over the limit, prompting the authorities to conduct a traffic stop. Here's what came next. How you doing? >> How are you? >> Good. Can you roll down this back window, please? >> Um, there's a bunch of stuff that's going to fall out, but >> it will. Okay, you can put it back up. >> You can put it back up. I'm just I want to figure out your driver's license situation. Okay. >> Why you? >> Cuz I want you to step out of the car. >> You're not going to let you step out of the vehicle. >> You ain't going to step out of the vehicle. >> Why can't I stay in the car if you look at my electric? >> Excuse me. >> Step out of the vehicle. I ain't playing this game. Let's do what about? Step out. Hands behind your back. >> Keep your hands behind your back. Face it from the door. >> Just minutes after the stop begins, she's restrained in handcuffs, and the officer wastes no time showing he means business. Come here. You got weapons on you? >> Come on. Take a seat. Take a seat. Step out of the vehicle. The train's mind back. You're just being detained. Okay. >> Okay. >> I appreciate your cooperation. >> All right. >> I'm just along for the ride. >> I I got you. >> Who push you? >> She's a friend. >> Sit back. You got any weapons on her? >> No, sir. >> Yeah. 104. But all it does is start another argument with the officers. >> Show me your badge. >> No, you're not stepping >> your badge and your ID. >> No, you're not stepping out. Okay. >> Show me your badge and your ID. >> She's trying to Samantha. She's trying to >> I would like to see his badge and his ID. >> First of all, keep >> No. Listen. >> No. Listen. >> All right. So, you're you're admitting you're admitting drinking alcohol. Just wait. Wait. Just wait. Let me finish and then I'll let you talk. >> That seems to quiet her down, but it doesn't mean she's actually listening to what the officers are saying. >> I pulled you over cuz you don't have a tag attached to the outside of your vehicle that's displayed outside the vehicle. Okay. >> You can't see it, right? >> So, I smell alcohol. I saw I don't know what she I don't know. Um I smell the alcohol, >> but you can't see it's covered up cuz I'm moving right now. >> Yeah. In the state of Florida, you have to have registration on a motor vehicle on the outside of the vehicle on the rear of the vehicle. Okay. >> I was not aware of that. >> So, I can smell the alcohol. I saw the uh front grip of a what I thought to be a firearm. It was a BB gun. You refuse to step out of the vehicle. Um I am going to take you to jail. Okay. She wants to exercise her right as a sovereign citizen to exit the car. >> Why? >> Uh, no. Samantha, you're going to jail for multiple charges. I can explain to him later. Do you have anything on you or in you that I I couldn't search or I couldn't feel whenever I patted you down? In the end, the woman was charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance, possession of paraphernalia, possession without a prescription, and resisting without violence. Later, she also faced an additional charge for smuggling contraband into prison. Number four, officers quickly show a couple that arguing the law doesn't work. On April 6th, 2024, an officer stopped a red Pontiac hatchback with an expired license. And almost immediately, the driver's behavior made it clear this wouldn't be an easy encounter. >> Hello. Hi. Deploy County Sheriff's Office. He advised that he might not be traveling with a license. >> It's broken. The handle's broken. >> Yeah. You having a good night? >> So far so good. Are you guys aware that the vehicle? >> Uh yes, I allowed that to happen. >> You allowed that to happen? >> Why would you allow that to happen? >> Um because this is our private conveyance. This has nothing to do with the uh state any longer. >> Okay. Okay. For me, it's because it cost so much. >> Can you just go front to front with a car? Are you a sovereign citizen? >> No, not a sovereign citizen. >> Uh, you're portraying the normal amenities of a sovereign citizen. >> I'm not a sovereign citizen. >> Okay. >> But that's your no. >> Okay. Don't Don't >> step out of the vehicle. I'm asking you. I'm going to step out. Take your hands off of me. Step out. I'm not asking anymore. I'm telling. Step out. >> Excuse me. And he still seems ready to make it worse. >> Under duress. >> Correct. Correct. Cuz you're required to identify yourself in a traffic stop. >> Correct. Let's just sw a statue. >> That's pretty. >> Do you want her to get this? >> Um, yes, please. That would be possible. >> You've been arrested before? >> Uh, yeah. >> Same thing. >> Um, >> yeah, same thing. I mean, >> driving mis confusion. I mean, >> I don't need Everyone's confused. What are you confused about? >> Well, I mean, driving isn't a Well, it's a commercial endeavor. I'm I'm not out here in commerce. You need to find arrangements for this vehicle. Start calling around to see who can come get you in the vehicle. Um, legally can't be driven on the road. So, keep that in mind. Otherwise, we're going to have to tow the vehicle. Okay. [Music] Hey, >> sir. >> Sir, I'm not going to give you a Christmas card this year. Really looking forward to that. It's expired two years ago. That >> can't drive. >> Oh, really? >> Yeah. So I they passed us. I pulled out of the Circle K and they immediately turned down Long. How about what's your name? Do you want to know why I stopped you? Do you speak English? Interesting conversation. There we go. >> Do you remember what I asked you? >> Anything you want? >> Well, I asked you for your driver's license and you handed me a vape pen and then you dumped out your purse and then you looked at your driver's license and didn't hand it to me. So, that's where I'm at. At this point, the driver simply won't respond, choosing silence over answering the officer's questions or acknowledging the stop. >> Is this your car, Caitlyn? >> Hello? Is this your car? >> Do you know why I stopped you? You made a right on red at Hillyard Madison, floored it, went through the red light at McKinley. Then you turned on the Riverside, didn't use a turn signal. Then you started making a left turn and then turned your signal on kind of like as you were making your left turn. Made a wide right turn around the curve and I smell alcohol. You can't tell me where you're coming from. You're handing me a vape pen instead of a driver's license. So, I'm going to have you step out. We're do some field sobriety tests. Okay. >> No, thank you. >> No, thank you. Okay, go ahead and step on out cuz you're under arrest for DUI. Please. >> You want to go through the questions with her? >> No, I'm not dealing with her. She's old. There's no dust. >> When the officer is finished handling her, the woman sits in the back seat of the patrol car where it seems the weight of her mistake has finally hit her. But tears won't erase what's already been done. >> I need to go look somewhere. >> No, I think this is probably old. >> Yeah, it's old. >> She's a winner, though. >> You're right. I'm sorry. Please. Please. >> I'm really sorry. Please. I'm really sorry. Please. >> I just want my mom. Please. Please. Please. It hurts. It hurts. Please please please. I want my mom. I want my mom. I want my mom. I want my mom. >> No, I want my mom. I want my mom. You can't tell me to do anything. I want my mom. I want Lana. We're not. >> Well, you can call her from the station. >> No, thank you. >> Let me out of the door. >> Oh, nothing. Maybe try to read that. >> No, she already told me to off and she wants an attorney, so I don't even think I'm going to read her rights. It's not really worth the uh >> the conversation. Well, then jump on out. >> All right. Well, I really don't know how to jump on out without being rude. >> The officer now escorts her inside the station for booking and processing. >> Stand up. >> Thank you. Stand up. >> I'm trying to. It's difficult. >> I know. I'm going to loosen that. >> Well, I'm trying to. We're going to do it this way. >> Stand up. >> Oh, wait. Wait. Hold on. I can stand up all by myself. >> I know. I'm not going to argue with you, sir. >> I was not speeding. Is the camera on? >> Yes, the camera's on. >> I was not speeding, sir. >> I got you at 55 and a 40. So, yes, you were speeding. >> Can you show me that on? >> No, I don't have to show you that on the radar. >> Okay, sir. You >> wasn't speeding. >> Yes, I was. >> I'm not going to argue. Can I have your license, please? >> I do have a license. I wasn't speeding. >> 57 back up here. I wasn't speeding up. >> Yes, sir. You were not. >> I'm not going to argue, sir. >> Can I get the supervisor, please? >> I'm I'm calling a backup right now. >> You have a license, sir? >> Can I get the supervisor? >> Can I see your license, please, sir? >> I don't have a license. >> Can you have any ID on you at all, sir? >> I don't I don't have ID myself, sir. >> Yes, sir, you do. >> No, I do not. >> Yes, sir, you do. >> I did not commit a crime. >> I'm sorry. What? >> I did not commit a crime. >> I didn't say you committed a crime. I said you committed an infraction. A civil infraction. So, don't make it worse than what it is. That's all I'm saying. >> I didn't commit a civil infrastructure. >> Yes, sir. I got you show you on the radar at 55 and a 40. >> Can I see the radar? >> No, sir. You cannot. >> Then how can you prove that I was speeding? >> We go to court and the judge hears my side. Here's your side. That's how we prove it in the state of Florida. In the state of Florida, I'm not allowed to lock the speeds in. There's nothing that shows on my radar right now. State of Florida right now. >> Roby, back up. Give me a supervisor. Jesus Christ. A traffic ticket was all he was facing until he chose not to cooperate. Repeating that he did nothing wrong. At this rate, the stop could end with far more than just a citation. >> You're talking to me. Yeah. I'm sorry. Go ahead, sir. >> You were saying I didn't hear what you saying cuz you're talking to me. I was not. >> Yes, sir. I have you on the radar. And that's my I'm saying you were you saying you weren't. So, what we do is I give you a ticket and we go to court. That's what we do. That's the way it works. That's what's going to happen. Give me one pretty quick here. Supervisor, please. >> Sir, do you have an ID? I need to see your ID. >> I'm not going to identify myself. I did not commit. >> Sir, I didn't say you committed a crime. I said you committed a similar crime. >> Yes, sir. Okay, that's my side. I legally pulled you over. So, that's what I'm allowed to do. You're required by law to show me your license. You have a license. >> I'm sorry, sir. >> Why am I being detained? >> Yes, sir. You are. >> Why am I being detained? >> Cuz you you're speeding. That's not a crime. >> I didn't say it was a crime. >> You You're being detained, sir. Don't try and leave that. You'll then commit a crime then. Actually, not not identifying yourself after I asked for it illegally. It's actually a crime. So, yeah. So, you want to identify yourself or not? >> You're saying that I I failed to identify myself as a crime >> because I legally stopped you. Now, you're interfering with my investigation. See? >> So, who are you investigating? >> You >> then how do you know? Then who am I? >> You won't identify. Are you I'm I'm just asking for an ID. That's all I'm asking for. You want to give me an ID? >> I mean, really, you want to go this route? >> What route? >> All I'm asking for is an ID. >> Crime. I didn't say you committed a crime, sir. I didn't didn't say you committed a crime. I said you committed infraction. And now you're refusing to identify yourself. So now, what am I supposed to do? >> I'm I'm I'm being open and honest with you, you sir. I'm going to give you a citation. You can take it to court. No problem at all. That's what we're going to do. So, the next step is up to you. That's what I'm going to do. What's the next step? So, what do you want to do, sir? Show me some ID, please. >> I don't have no ID, >> I'm sorry. >> I don't have no ID. >> You don't have an ID. And you're driving the vehicle. >> I'm traveling. >> No, sir. You're driving the vehicle? >> I'm traveling. >> With additional units on the scene, nothing changes. The driver keeps repeating that he's not driving but traveling while refusing to give his name only worsening his situation. >> Okay. >> He's saying he's traveling. >> So you have no ID. What's your name, sir? >> I didn't commit a crime. What did I do? What? What's your reasonable suspicion? >> He's refused to identify himself. It says he's traveling. >> So, you don't want give me ID and don't want to identify yourself. Correct. >> You don't want to identify yourself. I'm asking you if you want to identify yourself. You You're refusing. I'm just asking. It's on camera. So, you want to identify yourself, sir? Unless you suspect me of committing a crime, officer, I do not have to identify myself. >> Yes, sir. You do. You're required to in the state of Florida. Provide me ID when I pull you over illegally. You've been stopped for speeding. I've explained it to you. >> But I have a witness here. I have a witness here that says that I was not. >> And I've got a radar that says you were >> Where's the radar? >> In my car, though, you're not going to see my car. >> Okay. I'm not required by law to show you my vehicle. Okay. So, now we've got five cops here. the road all blocked because you want to identify yourself. >> That's all. Simple. All you got to do is identify yourself. I told you what I would do. I give you a ticket when you go to court. That's that's real simple. >> Write your ticket. >> I can't write ticket. Let you identify yourself, sir. >> Your ticket. Write your ticket. Go ahead. Write your ticket. I'm stopping you from >> And I want to see your ID, sir. You have an ID. You >> really want to escalate this? That's It's a simple thing. That's all it is. A simple thing. Simple thing. All you do is identify yourself. I can just take care of you beyond the road. Boom. No problem at all. But you don't want to identify yourself. >> Both continue to insist they weren't speeding and had no reason to be stopped. But the radar tells a different story. To keep them from fleeing, officers place a stopper under the wheel. >> Are you refusing to identify yourself? >> I'm sorry, ma'am. I I'm sorry. I can't hear you. Really loud. >> Yes, ma'am. He was. >> Yes, ma'am. He was. >> I was not excusing. I was not speeding. You pull up behind me. I pull out there. Pull out in front of a car. I pull out. I turn my indicator on. I move in front of the car and I went back on the same in the same lane. And then you pull up behind me. I was not speeding. >> I have you on the radar at 55 milesPH. Sir, >> don't have me on the radar at 55 because I was not going 55. I was going I was going 40. >> That's your That's your side, not my side. Okay. My side is you were speeding. So that's my side. >> I was not speeding. >> Okay. >> I was not speeding. I was not speeding. I was not speeding. >> Okay. >> I was not. >> Then we can go to court on that, sir. >> I was not speeding. Then write a ticket. You go to court. I was not >> And I need your ID to be able to write ticket. That's what I'm saying. ID. Yes, sir. I do. >> You said you're conducting an investigation. You must know who you're investigating. >> You must know who you're investigating. If you don't know when to do your investment, >> what's that? >> The officers have had enough. With cooperation nowhere in sight, they're ready to do what it takes to remove him from the car. >> Get out of the car, sir. >> Get out of the car. >> Out of the car. >> Get out of the car. Down court. >> Get out of the car. Get out of court. Why you arresting me? Why you arresting me? >> Why are you arresting me? I'm not even resisting. >> I'm not even resisting. >> I'm not even resisting. >> It's not even the seat belt. >> I'm not even resisting. >> I'm not resisting. I'm not doing nothing. >> Watch out. Watch out. I'm not resisting. I'm not doing nothing. What? >> Paul, grab this. Just >> Yo, I'm not resisting. I'm not resisting. >> I'm not resisting. I'm not resisting. [Music] Just get a good search on the ground. Rolling. >> Are you kidding me? You going? You going? You going? You going to me like that? Yes. I won't. Yep. Stand up. >> Look at my Look at me. Look at me. Look at me. >> He's no longer just dealing with a traffic violation. The driver's defiance could now bring a felony charge. >> All of this. >> You drove it, sir. >> All you do is identify yourself. >> Let me get my question. Hey. Okay. Walk with them. We'll get your shoe when you get in the car. Get in the car. >> What am I >> put in the car? >> What am I being arrested for? >> Obstruction. >> Obstruction of what? >> Hey, the windows are wind up in the car. >> I'll be suffocated in this car. I'll be suffoc I'm suffocating. Put your foot in. I'mma suffocate in this car. Put your foot in. I'm going suffocate in the car, bro. Okay. Well, we got your ID now. So, >> if you would have just given the ID, we that that would have been an issue. >> But I wasn't speeding. I was not speeding. The officer is lying. He can't prove that I was speeding. >> He he can prove that you were speeding. He has radar in his car. >> And I was not speeding. I have a witness who was right there beside me. I was not speeding. >> That's that's something that you had to fight in court. You can't fight on the side of the street. >> I wasn't fighting it on the side of the street. I was asking him to articulate what his suspicion was. >> But you failing to identify yourself. >> Okay. That is a crime. >> How did I fail to identify myself? Am I Am I accused of me committing a crime? >> You were speeding. It was a civil infraction. >> Not a crime. >> It's a crime not to identify yourself. Yes. >> Is speeding a crime? >> I don't think you you're not following along what I said. >> It's an infraction where you would that he was going to write you a citation. Okay. But you then failing to identify yourself, that is the crime. That is what created this whole mess. If you would have just given your ID, you would have been on your way right now, but now you're going to go to jail. Okay? And you actually got a felony as well. Okay? So, I'm trying to explain to you what's going on and that's that's what's going on. Okay? We have now we have your ID. Okay. So, now you're going to get booked into jail along with your same the same citation that you were initially going to get. More silence follows, showing he has no plans to cooperate any further. >> All right. Where do you where do you live at? >> Sir, are you done talking? Okay. Oh, good luck to you, sir. You just roll out the door. >> Who's this? Who's this guy to you? >> Who is this guy to you? >> That's my boyfriend. >> It's your boyfriend. Okay, cool. So, he's going to be going to jail. Okay. >> So, >> well, first off, he has no valid driver's license. Okay. He failed to identify himself. So, it's obstruction and also resisting with violence. Okay. So, he's going to go to jail for a felony and a couple misdemeanor. >> For a felony and a couple misdemeanors. Okay. So, all he had to do was identify himself and he would have got a ticket and been on his way. You both would have been on your way. All right. Is this your vehicle? >> Yes. >> Okay. So, we're going to be impounding your vehicle as well. >> Okay. >> Why? >> Because it was used in the commission of a crime. >> What crime? >> It's the resisting with violence, the driving with no license, the obstruction. >> All right. Where do you guys live at? I live I live down the street. >> Where's down the street? >> Um Drew Street. Okay. >> Drew Street is a street. What's your address? Drew Street. Does he live with you? >> His address different from mine. >> What's his address? >> I don't know. >> How long have you been dating? >> Over a year. >> Over a year. And you have no idea what his address is. >> He lives in Megan or something. >> I don't know the exact address. >> Is he married or something? I don't think so. >> Not only does the man refuse to comply, but his partner also shows no willingness to cooperate with the officers. >> You've been dating for a year and you don't know if he's married and you don't know his address. You understand how that makes absolutely no sense? >> I don't know his address. >> Okay. >> All right. So, here's the deal. We're going to be taking your car. Okay. We're going to be impounding it. Um, and has this ever been impounded? Has ever been a felonious impound before? >> No. >> Okay. So, what we're going to do is we're going to do a felonious impound on it. Okay. So, if this is ever used in the commission of a felony again, we're going to seize it. Okay. Which means it then belongs to the city of Clear Water. >> Okay. So, uh did you just get off of work? All right. Do you have any friends or family in the area that can come pick you up? >> No. >> No. Okay. Well, there's Uber or taxi, something like that. Okay. So, do you have anything in the car that you need? Ma'am, you're not going in the car. I asked you. Is there anything in the car that you need? >> Yeah, I got to get my keys and my purse. >> Okay, then you're going to stay in there and we're going to grab them for you. >> I'm sorry. >> Go to the car. >> The incident concluded with a man facing charges of obstruction without violence, resisting with violence, and driving with a suspended license.
