Shoplifting isn't legal anywhere, but watching these suspects, you'd think it was a personal right. Here are five cases when dumb shoplifterss think they're entitled to steal. Number five, man tries to steal steak and sushi and thinks playing dumb will erase the charges. On June 4th, 2025, Hoboken officers were sent to a local shopright after staff allegedly caught a man attempting to steal. According to store employees, they caught a man in the act, led him to the security office, and called for help. Here's what the officers walked into. What's going on, >> what's up, man? How are you? >> Uh, long story short, gentleman here came with a scooter with a bunch of bags inside, put multiple items there. Um then he went to the register. He paid for $110 worth of items but failed to pay for all that $70 worth of items. >> And um then we tried to do our paperwork and he's not complying with >> Okay. So each whether you sign it or not, just know that you're not allowed back here. That's what that is for, right? >> Does he comprehend that? >> You understand what they're saying? No, I mean >> maybe there's I don't know what's going on. Maybe I just forgot to put some items, you know, to maybe it's there's a broken bags or something. Maybe I didn't really, you know, retreat the items out and forgot. And then this guy just approached me just so okay, there's some items not showing up. And I Okay. So they brought me over here and kind of like okay you have to sit down if you don't sit down I'll call police and they didn't read any the paperwork or anything to me or inform on my rights right and they just like keep threaten me so oh I don't know what's going on here >> okay so >> and just keep threaten me just okay which part was the threat >> you sitting down >> sit down if you don't sit down Yeah. You say not >> I will I will just you know keep you here. The tone you're saying just like >> you're not very polite. >> You wouldn't cooperate. You wouldn't sit down. >> Well, I I follow you up here and you just told me you sit down. Sit down. No place whatsoever, right? >> And you don't sit down as well. And you don't talk to me. It's just like okay, you sit down. According to the suspect, it was all an oversight, but to the staff, it's a familiar trick. The sushi and steak were deliberately hidden, showing clear intent. Despite that, the suspect insists he meant no harm. >> Can't talk if you wouldn't say. >> See his attitude. I don't know what's going on here. >> I'll explain to you in a sec. >> Sure. No, unfortunately I don't. >> He first came in at 6:21 p.m. >> went out just like after work. >> He grabbed the sushi here and >> concealed it in the back. He buried that very deep with show intention and it was deliberately shoplifting. >> Um, >> put it in bag. >> Then he went straight to the meat department where he grabbed some steaks. Same thing, he buried that deep in different bags. Then he went to others. Long story short, he went to the register at 6:44 p.m. >> 6:44. >> Self check out or register? >> No, registered too. >> Registered two. >> At 6:44 p.m. >> And he was apprehended at the rest of your at 6:46 p.m. >> I said, "We're going to need your ID to fill up our paperwork." And then he somehow decided to call his lawyer or whoever. Do you have any ID with you? >> No, I don't. I really don't. I just come out and do the grocery shopping. Just bring my my phone. That's it. >> Okay. Well, regardless, you know, you have to give provide a name to us, right? >> Yes. >> Okay. Cuz you're going to be placing. >> Yeah, I know. I Yes. >> Okay. Can you stand up for me, please? >> You can put your form your just put your hand back. The officer issues a formal trespass warning before transport. After today's stunt, the man is permanently barred from setting foot in the store again. So, basically, to summarize, cuz I've done this for a while already. >> Okay. >> Basically, this is just telling you that you are banned from Shopright that they basically you come in here, you're trespassing. That's just the acknowledgement form. >> Okay. >> Okay. That's basically summarized. They're just telling you that you are no. >> Whether you sign it or not, me telling you is enough to arrest you for trespassing whether you sign that or not. You understand? >> Why is that? >> Because in the statue it states trespassing, I can verbally tell you that you are not allowed in shop right now. >> Okay. >> You understand that? >> Okay. >> Okay, cool. So, he can take the photo, right? >> Yeah. Well, he's not going to sign it, so that's okay. >> That's fine. Well, at least he has this as proof that he's heard this. No, you just like I walk in here and >> you know there can't fill this out without an ID anyway. So it's irrelevant >> regardless he's going to get a phone. >> That's cool. All righty. >> Well, you know this paper I look for paper. >> Yeah. One second. I was >> right here. You got it. >> Yeah. I called my lawyer. >> This is the one, right? >> Yeah. Correct. That's the one. Okay. >> If he won't sit down, I can't talk to him or proceed without actually threatening to us. >> Mhm. >> We don't know who we're dealing with, what they have on. >> I got you. Yeah. >> And that scooter's his right there. >> That scooter's his with those items in the back. Yeah. >> With the items in the back. Okay. All right. You flip them. Just check them real quick. >> To the left. 149. This is right. Yeah. was made contact with that party. Uh they were trying to get an ambulance for parents. >> So make sure there >> it's no I'll give you a case number. >> Yeah, I got I should have your mom or anything. I know your last name, so it's okay. Mother, I almost hit you in the face. Even without any ID on him, officers were later able to identify the suspect as Jinbo Yang. >> Ready? >> All right. Let's do it. >> No, we I'll take you. Let's see if if we can put it in the trunk or something. >> Is that able to be told? >> Uh, yeah. >> Uh, so yeah, let's let's talk over there. Let's just get out of here. It's like an ugly thing. All right. be right here. Right behind you, you doing? >> Look, you're right behind you. I didn't realize The items he tried to steal totaled $69. While he paid for the cheaper goods, the sushi and steak were left unpaid. That decision now has him on his way to the station. >> So, how how I'll turn it the other way. >> Uh, you have to turn this the other way. Yeah. >> Completely. >> Yep. >> So this way it is turns this way. >> Yeah. >> All right. Yeah. So his handle actually turns. He said he can fold it the other way. >> Go same way. >> Just go to it out. >> Yeah. You have to Yeah. Yeah. You have to open it. Yes. >> Completely. >> Yeah. Completely. >> Oh, okay. >> And then go out >> like this. >> Yep. Yep. Yeah. And then try. Yeah. >> Okay. She's thinking that she's going to take her to the ambulance. She's fine. Everything's going out. >> Place it down. >> 48185 48185 down 20. We're walking down towards the >> good you have a bigger chunk. >> Yeah. Yeah. a long proud moment worth sharing and table and whether it's a raised >> he was officially charged with shoplifting and later released with a summon to appear in court. Number four, shoplifter learns that offering to pay after getting caught doesn't erase the crime. On December 15th, 2024, officers were called to a local Target after store employees caught someone hiding merchandise and trying to walk past the registers. Here's what happened when they arrived to confront the suspect. >> Um, spell your first name. >> Give me a different name. I wasn't listen I want to shoot straight with you. Okay. >> If this is not your real name, >> you have one chance >> to tell me the truth or you're going to catch another charge which is providing false information to law enforcement officer >> which going to keep you in jail even longer than you're going to be in there now. >> I don't I don't want to like is there any way that I can just like >> fix this like without a charge cuz I really I cannot. >> Okay. So what is your real name? Jordan. >> I go by because it's my preferred name. >> Okay. What's What's your legal government name? >> Try twice. And >> as soon as I get my uh sooner guy comes, I'll we'll have mine confirm. >> Okay. Um >> do you have a driver's license? >> I have a driver's license >> in Florida. Okay. >> These are the items in receipt. That's yours. >> Okay. >> U right now. And then >> Yeah, you got time. They're they're on their way. So the guy just like I told him I was I was in the area. So I'm like well let me stop over here and help him out a little bit. So >> appreciate that. And then I search the bag. Make sure all the mine. So >> yeah. This is your bag here. >> So what's the deal? Why'd you have to do what you did today? >> You're on hard times. Don't have a job. What's going on? >> Yeah. Like I have a job. I've just been struggling recently and like I'll be honest like um like I really didn't have to and I I can take full accountability with that. >> Um and like like I am sorry. I I don't want to like I won't return to this target again. Like I won't >> When was the last time you arrested for this? >> I've never been arrested. >> You never been arrested for this? >> Yeah. >> Have you ever been stopped here at Target at this Target before? >> No. According to the suspect, this is a first offense, but store employees recognize the face. They've dealt with her before and they haven't let it go. >> Have they been here before? >> Yeah, we uh caught me like on the camera, but I've never been in this office before. >> October in October. So doing the same thing just >> that's the name date of birth. >> That's one I initially got >> and they got one >> a different one before this one. >> Do you have a ID on you or no? >> No. Heavy door. >> Can you tell me how you spell your name, please? >> Which one your driver's license? >> That's the one of my driver's license. >> Do you have a picture of your driver's license? >> Um, yeah. >> Thanks. Got trash can here. >> Um, >> trash. No can. Trash. No liner. >> Peanut butter. No jelly. >> Ham. No burger. What movie? Come on. >> What movie is it from? >> Come on. You got never You ain't never got two things that match. Ham, no burger. Peanut butter, no jelly. I've heard the saying, but I don't know what it's called. >> Friday. >> Friday when uh Smokey when when Smokeoky's inside uh inside his house. >> Yeah. No, please ham. No booger, peanut butter, no chili. >> Can you open this right up for me, please? >> I got it. I got it. >> Oh, you got it. I'm not. >> All right. You guys good? Yeah, we're good. >> All right. See you, Jess. See you guys. >> The officer pauses the process to gather a statement from staff and review the store security footage, which leaves little doubt about what the suspect did. >> At one point, it's a little difficult to see, but at one point, it's in her hand and she kind of does like a motion and it disappears into the bag. We'll provide you video with the that room where I took I opened the bag up and kind of took everything out. >> All right. Thank you. All right. This is just standard procedure. Okay. I'm going to read you your rights. All right. Just after every every sentence, you've got to indicate that you understand. Okay. You have the right to remain silent. Do you understand? So, why are we here today? >> Because I shot this, too. >> Okay. What did you what did you take today? >> Um the items um >> Okay. Why did you take these items? >> Um I didn't really have a motive. It was just kind of an impulse. Um I know I shouldn't have done it and I do regret it. Um, I really don't like I I don't want to like incur any um charges or anything and I'm willing to like um I'm willing to like give back or like um like do a formal apology or like anything that just like I don't want to lose my job or Okay. Where do you work? >> I work at autism center. >> Okay. >> Um I've just I'm just been struggling financially recently and I like I just haven't get many hours. Um >> yeah, and I know it it wasn't right. And um >> yeah, I'm I'm sorry. I just I don't want to like um I just don't want like my life ruined over like a stupid mistake. The officers approached calmly, recognizing the suspect's cooperative behavior, but that doesn't mean she'll be walking away from this. >> Do you shop here often? Like how much how how often would you say you come here? >> Um honestly, not that often. Like >> how many times would you say have you been here? Um, probably like less than 10 times if I were to estimate. >> Okay. Have you ever shoplifted from here before? >> Yes. >> Okay. >> All right. Stand up for me. Put your hands on your back. Turn around. Face the wall for me. >> Face that way. Sorry. You're good. They too tight or they good? >> It's okay. >> Okay. Um, am I allowed to like write down a phone number or something? So, when we get to the jail, you'll be able to get phone numbers out of your um out of your phone. Okay. We'll grab all that stuff for you. All right. You want your drink to come with you or you want to stay there? I'm going to be honest. I don't think you can bring it. So, anything in your pockets? >> No, sir. >> No. Okay. What's in your bag? >> Um, like personal items. Um, I think I had like some drink mix and like just random stuff. >> Okay, you can sit down. reply. I will let you know you're going to be trespassing the store for a year. Okay? I'm going to put your trespass in your bag with your belongings. Okay? Can't throw that in there. With everything processed, the suspect is now escorted to the waiting patrol car. stand up [ __ ] tire. >> Thank you. >> Just wing your stance for me. >> Do you have anything in your pockets you're not supposed to have? >> No. >> Do you have any items at all like money or anything like that? >> Not that I know of >> that they remember. >> Um if you want to check, you can. But >> yeah, we have to because we're going to put you in the patrol car and you know you're under arrest. So, we have to make sure you don't have any weapons or >> Okay. Um, yeah, I don't I don't have anything in my pockets in my lunch. >> You don't have anything in your socks or anything? >> No. >> Yeah. We'll let you know. I'm not accusing you of anything. Okay. >> But if you have any or anything like that on you and you go to the jail and they find it, it's a felony charge. Okay. >> I don't have anything on you. >> Okay. >> Step back just an inch for me. Widen your stance. One more. More. There you go. Anything in your pockets? >> I know. Okay. Good. >> In the end, the suspect was charged with petty theft and was transported without further incident. Number three, when one vigilant customer prevents a shoplifter from getting away. On March 17th, 2024, officers were called to a Bath & Body Works after a concerned customer reported seeing a woman hiding merchandise in her bag. Here's what happened when the authorities arrived. >> Hello. >> Sorry about that. >> Oh, no worries. >> How you doing? >> Good. >> All right. So, what's going on or what happened with >> Did somebody know a customer? >> Oh, it's them. >> Oh, because she saw the those No, we didn't call them. A customer didn't call. We didn't call. >> So, they didn't take anything. >> We didn't call. We promise. No. >> A customer told us that they were going to call. >> She one of the girls call. One of those she saw, >> but we never called. >> So, customer. >> Okay. Okay. I need one person to talk at a time. Right now, >> one of the customers came and told me that she used to work for a retail company. She's like, "This and this." I can tell that they're already they're stealing. I was like, "Thank you for letting me know. We're already aware." >> Hey. >> Hi. Did he tell you to come in here or >> No, I'm trying to figure out what is they all whispering about and saying. >> Okay. Can you step outside for me? I'm trying to figure that out with them right now. Okay. >> Why they got to whisper behind people back? Okay. >> No, they have. They was doing it all while we was in the store. >> Okay. All right. Well, I'm trying I'm trying to talk to them to figure it out. Okay. Well, you're not letting me do my job now. Can you please step outside so I can talk to them? And then I will come explain everything to you. Okay. But I got to talk to them first. >> They wanted to give me a sample. >> Okay. All right. I'll figure it all out. I promise. I promise. >> Okay. You were saying >> so one of the ladies, Boo Spider, I do remember her. I was trying to look for a manager because I know even she's like even she saw she's like I saw them put stuff in their bag and I was trying to look for a manager like to see if we could do something because someone >> someone that wasn't a worker saw them. So, I'm guessing that's the lady that called. >> Okay. She told me before she left, she's like, "I just want to let you guys know I'm going to call my cops so they can deal with that." >> Yeah. You said that's what she told me before she walked. It was >> You said you guys can't call the cops. >> According to staff, the theft wasn't her only move. The suspect also tried to scam them by taking merchandise off the shelf and pretending it was eligible for a refund or exchange. >> Okay. So what? So we think that they put stuff in the bag, did a exchange and did it? >> They did. They took stuff from our wall. >> Our walls, our gift sets, our >> Okay. But so then did they go up to the front and like exchange something >> to rechange, but we know they were took it. So she was upset right now that we changed the prices, which we did because she wasn't going to get merch full price merchandise for something she tried to steal. >> Okay. >> So did they I I'm trying to just show you. So they walked in with merchandise, took more merchandise from over there, and then went to the front and tried to exchange. >> Yeah, they were grabbing candles. It was grabbing a bunch of stuff. >> Okay. Do you guys do any transaction exchange? Anything. >> They were they were dealing with them. I don't know why they ended up taking and not taking because they weren't happy with what they were getting back. >> I was just trying to acknowledge them. Every time they were in, you need any help? And they're like, "Nope." I'm like, >> "Gotcha." Okay. Well, I will go see what they got. So, what? Yeah, I'll need to figure out what any transaction that did happen up front. What? Like what if they exchanged something? If they bought something, whatever they did do at the register. >> So, what merchandise they exchange? I mean, how is that how is that going to help? >> Because I need to know what I we have to be able to look in their bags and figure out what theyought. >> Yeah. What they bought, what they came in with. Like, I got to Otherwise, I don't know what they stole. There's no way. >> With no new details from staff, officers head outside to speak directly with the suspects involved. >> Can I just talk to you over here? Just want to You can set those down if you don't want to carry them. They look heavy. >> Okay. All right. So, you said that you you're admitting to to doing something. What happened in the store? Well, >> what's $54? >> $54? I don't even >> I paid I paid I thought I paid her money. Okay. What What did you go into the store with? >> With >> Well, I right here. Yes. We was returning a lot of stuff >> and I purchased some stuff separately with a gift card because I wanted it done separately. She rung up my stuff with my gift card. Then when they went to return my other stuff, she rung everything up for $5 cuz I didn't have a receipt for it. So she rung everything up for $5. I'm like, "Why is you trying to give me $5 for everything?" And I told her, "I'm not going to take no $5 for it because I put this stuff in my baskets and been selling it for the last 15 years." So I know you How is everything $5? Every single item you just put $5. So basically, she wanted to rip me off. I told her I'm taking all my stuff back and to put the stuff I purchased back on my cart is what I told her. I gave her like she put on the car and um I just ordered that $5 >> and she put it back on this card right here. >> Okay. So, what if there's footage or witness saying that you guys put some of this merchandise you took off the shelves and it wasn't involved in any transaction? So, is there any merchandise in there that you didn't pay for or that you, you know, wasn't involved in transaction? >> Well, I guess I was exchanging for but I didn't want to limit. >> Yeah. So, obviously there were some things that weren't exchanged. You guys have a lot of merchandise. So, I'm saying is did any of this merchandise come from the shelves in there? >> The only thing came from the shelves is what they were. >> The woman claims most of the items came from earlier purchases and that they only spent $5 this time, but the bags are full and the receipts don't line up with what they're trying to return. It's clear that the officers aren't convinced. >> Then they run up a whole bunch of stuff. >> So, you're saying this came from this store? Correct. They run kiss candles up separately and then they rung up a whole bunch of stuff for me and then I returned it and told them to put it back on my car. >> Okay. So they left it. You left it at the front? >> Yes. I told them to return what's in this bag. >> This is all of the stuff I was bringing back. >> All the stuff you're bringing back. Is it okay if I look in there? >> No. >> Okay. Well, there's a good chance we're going to have to look in there cuz it looks like that might be some of the items that they're saying that you guys took from the shelf in there and put into your bag. >> What they say we took? >> Or some gift sets in there. I don't have any gift set. >> That's a lie. >> That's a lie. This is all online to return to. So, and then I have receipts for the gift sets that I was returning. So, >> okay. Do you guys do you like buy a lot of this stuff and then you like resell it or something? >> Yeah, I make this and I've been making bags. >> Gotcha. Okay. Um, let me hang tight. I'm going to go talk to him again and try and figure out >> exactly what's >> And then my my partner also was here. She bought stuff, too. >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> I got you. >> That was done on the February. >> They have like four or five different bags. >> So, and the big one that he had, the strawberry one is where he was loading all the gift sets. >> Gotcha. Okay. And that is the only thing we're worried about is the gift sets. They cuz they have a lot of merchandise. So it's trying to figure out what did they walk in with >> exchanges and after a certain amount of time like there's certain we kind of IP we scan it to tell them what they can get in return and they don't like the answer and if they don't have the receipts then they try to find >> that's what she was talking about with the $5. >> Okay. So but the gift sets is the only thing we think that they took and we think. Yeah. >> Okay. All right. Well I will go >> she identified herself yet. >> No I didn't realize we didn't have that. >> I I told Carrie ID and she's refusing. So we'll just take her for that. Okay. >> The officer heads back outside to collect the bags, temporarily bringing them in to verify whether the receipts actually match the items and to make sure nothing inside was stolen. >> Okay. >> What do we got in this bag? >> Uh the bag the bags I came up with. >> All right. >> One, two, three, four. >> All right. Can you just take that stuff out for me so we can make sure that none of that came from inside the store? Who is they trying to say to like what is they trying to say >> that you was going to bring back? >> Right. These are the bags that I had already. >> You're saying you came in with those bags >> because it's cheaper now instead of getting a bag to do the box you get. So >> give that picture. >> Okay. So you're telling me you came into the store with those bags that you didn't take them off the shelf? >> Yes. You have a receipt for those? >> Um, I came in the store just >> these items. >> Are these Bath and Body Works product? >> Those are >> So, you came into the store Bath and Body Works product. >> Were you looking to return to exchange them? >> Did you bring that up to them? >> You Now, they talking about because he was over there looking at them. That's because we was matching the prices for what they was trying to tell us. When she returned the bag, she hung the bags up for $5 and I think $125. I told him, "Go over there and see how much they is." >> Mhm. >> And then I told her to We didn't want I didn't I told her to put all my stuff back on. >> Let's just You told my my boss that, you know, she wasn't involved. Just be honest. Did you take these off the shelf and put them in your bag? >> No. >> Okay. Cuz we've got someone saying, "Did you have them in your bag? It matches with the ones missing off there. This is gonna get sorted out so much quicker for Dishonest, you know. >> Well, I mean, no, I didn't. I don't think so. >> Okay. >> Do you actually have your ID on you? >> I don't I'm asking you about today's purchases and you don't have any. >> All right. We're going to bring these in the store. >> Got this sort out. Figured out these came from this. >> The employees now start scanning the merchandise, compiling an itemized receipt to confirm what was actually in the bags. You guys, when you ring these up, are you able to see that they're from this store or just >> No, they all match the same price. >> They don't match, >> right? Are you able to ring these up and get a receipt by any chance? Just showing the value of them. >> Like, believe me, >> just like a training receipt to show the retail value. I'm just super excited that you guys, a customer called and you guys were out there as they walked out because we knew from the getgo when you walk in two huge rumpled bags in your arms. >> Well, they know it makes it difficult for us to sort through and figure out, you know, okay, what did you actually >> Exactly. Exactly. And she might have more stuff, too, because the cashier that was helping her was trying to do the return and most gift cards. That one's missing a lotion. >> Falling apart in the bag. So, >> wait. They're They're getting arrested though, right? >> $40 a piece basically. >> And then who was it that actually was watching? Um, >> well, all of us. We're all doing all had a nice watching, but we're all >> Yeah, I know. Somebody said the strawberry bag and they saw him putting it. Was that the person that left? >> No, she's she's there. >> Okay. She's down there. the strawberry cupcake. >> She'll have >> Okay. But Oh, so >> she has the individual ones, I think. >> Okay. Um and you saw them putting these into one of their bags. >> Oh, the guy. Yeah. >> Okay. Cuz yeah, he had a strawberry bag out there. I know you had said. >> So, yeah, >> you saw him grab these and place them into >> Oh, yeah. He was putting them in there. >> Okay. Um, he was just like, "Could I get your information?" >> Once they receive the itemized list from the store staff, the officers run a background check on the woman only to learn that the name she gave them was fake. Now, with her real identity confirmed, they prepare to make the arrest. >> All right. Can you put your bag on the ground for a second? >> What? >> Okay. You're going to be placed under arrest right now. For what? >> For obstructing a retail theft. For obstruction? >> Yep. You gave a false name to us. My name is You keep playing your game. >> Oh my god. You want my picture to bring you my ID? I got my ID on my phone. >> And how what retail stuff? What did I steal, man? >> Huh? >> What did I smell? Bath and Body Works products. >> What did I steal? You were in store. >> I was What? >> Okay. I >> Hold on. You're in custody right now, so I can't ask you any questions. So once we get down to the jail, this officer here will talk to you and interview you and read you your rights, and then she can answer it. >> All right. For you, >> Wagman. What about my stuff? We're going to put it all in this car right here. It's all going to come with you. >> Okay. So, what is that saying, man? >> We're going to write this car. We can talk about it all at the police department. >> Huh? >> We can talk about it at the police department. >> Do you know when I walked in there, I told them to hold my bags, my exchange. So, how am I What did I do? I never even have to register. >> The case ends with a woman being processed and booked for obstructing identification and retail theft. Number two, officers watch as two shoplifterss try to blame everything on each other after getting caught. On July 25th, 2025, officers were called to a local Kohl's after reports came in about two suspects concealing merchandise and attempting to leave without paying. They made it past the registers and out to their car, but before they could drive off, officers intercepted them. Here's what happened. >> Hi, >> can you step out? >> Hey, my man. I saw you. Can you come back here? Yeah, come back here. Hi. You know why? We might be here. >> Um, no. >> Okay. >> Um, you're on camera taking stuff. Okay. >> Um, I think I >> That's fine. Uh, I didn't say anything's going on right now. Can you go talk to my partner over here for one second? >> Over here. >> What's up, man? You good? Can you step out? >> Were you just in Cole's, man? >> Yeah. Be straight up with me. >> I'm not going to lie. >> What happened? >> I didn't take nothing. I didn't walk out with nothing. >> Okay. >> So, I was with my friend. She >> All right. >> I didn't take nothing though. I didn't walk out with nothing. >> All right. You got ID, honey? >> Yeah. Okay. Do you know why we might be trying to talk to you? >> No. >> Okay. Please don't try to play dumb. >> And call for everything. Okay. Do you know why we might be going to call then? >> No. >> Okay. Were you trying to take stuff from Kohl's? >> No. I didn't have a wallet. That's why. So, I only had cash and I only had $6. >> So, what what do you mean by that? I just put gloves on when I talk to people. Don't worry about what I'm doing right now. Okay. So, what do you mean you only had $6? >> Cuz I was going to buy me something, but I didn't have no money. >> So, did you put it back? >> Yeah. >> Okay. Where would it be in the store? >> Be by the by the charging store. >> Okay. Do you have a driver's license on you? If not, I'll just take your name down. Okay. >> You got anything illegal in the car? >> No. Not that I know. >> Do you have a license or no? >> Yeah, I have a license. >> You got nothing illegal in the car? >> No. No. >> No. >> No. >> No. >> All right. Who else is in the car? Who's that? >> Oh, that's my cousin. >> All right. You guys were you guys staying out in Aurora now or what? >> No, we stay in Chicago. >> What are you guys doing here? >> Just driving, taking a ride. Um, my mom needs a car part so I just came out for a car part. Like, huh? >> Where? >> But my friend was like, "If I could stop that coast for come in." I just went in and I was walking around. >> The woman's anxiety is easy to spot. She keeps glancing at her male accomplice as the officer questions her, unsure of what to say next. >> What are you doing on Aurora? >> Ma'am, what are you doing in Aurora? I was coming here to go to the mall. >> Okay. What's your zip code? >> You're not going to be on camera taking anything. >> No. No. I I didn't walk over nothing. I didn't steal nothing. >> All right. You didn't. >> We're just We're I'm just trying to be transparent with you cuz I already know what happened. >> Um so I'm trying to have you be honest. >> Oh yeah. I I didn't steal nothing. I didn't walk out with nothing. I didn't take nothing. >> So you're saying you don't have anything on you? You guys didn't take anything out? >> Okay. We putting stuff in anything? >> No. >> No. You didn't grab anything off the counters or any clothes or anything? >> No. >> I grabbed maybe like two things. >> Sorry about that. Name, please. >> She took you think. >> Um, not that I'm aware of. It's cuz like we're kind of separate. So, I don't know. >> You guys walked in together then decided to walk out separate? >> No, no, no. We like she had walked in first. Um, I had you could see like I had pee right there and she's the bathroom and then I walked in after. You know what I'm saying? >> Okay. So, where would the merchandise be? >> It's in the car. It's all the way by the clothes and stuff. I didn't feel anything. >> Okay. Okay. So, there's nothing in the car? >> No. >> Whose car is this? >> It's my mom's car. >> Your mom's car? Okay. >> Why was he driving? Or why did you get in the back? >> Me? >> Yeah, >> cuz I can't drive. Well, I can't, but I got a ticket recently. So, >> are you suspended? >> No. >> Okay. >> I have a permit. So, it has to be somebody. >> How old are you? >> 19. >> Okay. >> My permit doesn't remove it till like 08. >> Who is Who is the dude in the car to you? >> That's uh my friend. >> Okay. Who is he? >> That's my friend. >> Okay. Oh, wait. Are you good for a minute? >> Yeah. >> Okay. Stay right here. Okay. Don't go back in the car. >> That's all right. Hey, what'd you take from inside? >> Nothing. I put it back. I only had cash. I only had $6. >> So, there's nothing in that car that was from Kohl's. >> Cuz we're going to check. Just let you know. >> It's not my car. So, you put it search the car. >> Okay. There's nothing in that car from Kohl's. >> It's a question she doesn't want to answer. And the hesitation is clear. And now both suspects start scrambling to talk their way out, but the male suspect breaks first, hoping to protect himself. >> You can look at each other all you want. We're end up figuring out. And we see that we have the cameras. So I I rather have you be honest with me so I can make this process easier and we can get this over with. All right. So we'll do what you got to do. But what but once we do find out, then we're going to make sure that I'm going to take this investigation to the fullest of his extent. >> It's all good. Huh? >> Yeah. >> No, >> no, >> it's all good. >> No, I You want to help? >> You have to look at each other. It's fine. We're going to figure I'll figure it out for myself. I don't want to ask you if you want. >> I don't I didn't walk out with nothing. Whatever. It's in the car. Mom's going to >> That's fine. That's fine. I'm just going to I'm going to go go ahead with the I'm going to go talk to Kohl's. >> I'm going to watch the video again cuz I already saw half of it, but I'm going watch it again and then we'll figure it out. >> I got lights off, too. >> I just want to tell him. That's what I'm telling you. >> What do you want to tell me? >> That's in the car. What's in the car? >> Back. >> It's cuz she It's the stuff she took. I didn't take nothing. I didn't walk out with nothing. Nothing. >> What did you take? >> A lot. Is it a lot of stuff in that car? >> I didn't have I didn't see you walk out. I pulled up later. >> What? Weren't you the one who put up on the side? >> Oh, I saw you walking through here. >> You can check it with nothing. I didn't walk out with nothing. Okay. >> How do we pronounce your first name? >> Magros. Okay. So, remember when I said they have amazing cameras? >> Okay. You're on camera leaving with the bag. Okay. Is that the bag in the passenger seat over there in the back seat? >> Be honest with him like you just told me. >> I'm going to grab that. Okay. >> No, I didn't say you. I'm going to grab it. Okay. Something just happened. We were in close and um >> Is there anything else in the car that we're going to see? >> No, but not that I'm aware of. both. >> You said what? >> Caught on video with no room to deny it. Both suspects are now scrambling to explain, hoping it's not too late to soften the outcome. >> I know, but I have a son. I didn't want that. >> They're going to buy you then. >> I know, but I'm almost I'm >> going I have my son My son's birthday's in two months. I have my sixth anniversary next month. >> Repeat the >> So, what happens if I'm on probation in a different county? >> Probation. >> That's again, that's two probation. That's two violations. That shit's dead. They're not going to keep letting me out. >> That's the thing. >> It depends what the amount is. So certain amount. I'm on parole, friend. I need to get off in September. I'm on papers. I I'm on to the joint. I'm not going to see my son try one month, son. >> Come on. You know this. >> I'm not going to say two years. It's going to be a different It's a different county. They have >> But you're on probation. >> They're not going to release me. >> It I don't know. I'm not sure how much it took. It was a lot. Those are bad. >> So, what usually happens if you're on probation and they >> Everybody has a different case. >> I was just going to say they're going to probation. >> Sit 2 years. Mark, this is secondary probation. That means I got to sit two years after. >> It doesn't matter what you guys who wants to take charge of who doesn't. We're going to watch the cameras. If both of you guys did it, both of you guys come in. One of you guys did it. One of you guys comes in. It don't matter which y I mean whatever yall discussing right now it don't really matter. I was with her but I didn't I wasn't like freeing her up. >> We're gonna watch the cameras and then we're gonna see what happened. >> Master had J. One more. >> Yeah. I got to think about this like before coming over here and doing it. Especially over here like this probably the worst spot to come around and do something. >> It's cuz we didn't like Can I talk to you again one more time over here? >> Me? >> Yeah. You >> to get a clearer picture. The officers separate the suspects trying to determine whether one person was responsible or if both were fully aware of what happened. >> Okay, let's go. Let's go further over here. Okay. >> Okay. So, whose car is it? Cuz remember when I asked Okay. So, why is he saying it's his car? >> His car? He didn't say it was his car. >> He said it was his car. >> No, it's her car. I'm on the phone with her. >> Okay. So, but do you remember that's why he said it's his car and that's how he knows the door handles broke. >> What happened? >> I didn't hear none of that. You didn't tell me none of that. >> We were all right here. Mark's saying that it's his car. >> Okay. So, it's your car. You just don't drive it. Okay. Do you mind if we search the >> driver said Driver said we search the car? >> Your mom said no. >> Well, they already found they already found the makeup. >> That's her car. >> Okay. So, you're saying it's your car, but you're saying it's his car and it's his car. >> No, I said it was his mom's car. >> Okay. So, you're saying what what was your story with the merchandise and how you left everything? >> Okay. But it's not in the store, right? No. >> Okay. This what we're going to do. Give me a phone and I'm going put your hands behind your back. Okay. >> Can you >> No, cuz you're technically in custody. So, I'm hanging it up once we're done with it. >> How am I in custody? >> Cuz you're going to jail. You're under arrest. >> You're You're on video, bro. I wasn't kidding when I said they have 5K videos. Okay. >> So, I'm hanging it up and we're putting on an airplane mode as well. Okay. No, just shut it off cuz my phone's going to die. That sounds >> so I'm the only one being arrested. >> H I I have no idea who's being arrested other than you. I just got here, so I'm not the one that's arresting me. I'm not going to give you the wrong answer. >> And at this point, I'm not going to tell a lie when I'm I'm 2 years two years signed my life to probation. And you're telling me I just I'm going to catch another case and you're getting off in 3 months. You're getting off parole. You could sit in a joint. You could do a program for a month and you'll get out. compared to me. I gota sit faithfully two years down there not doing and nobody helps your mom but your brother everything comes on me. I do everything to support help and do everything. That's why I'm sitting here looking at him. I'm not taking no blame for nothing cuz you were on camera too. >> Now neither of them is holding back. Each suspect is quick to shift the blame onto the other. >> Back and forth. He I like how every cop wants to be rude to me when I'm being blat and then they let the person that did the most of the work just have his phone no can cut like you're against women just say that. >> I don't think that's what it is. >> I feel like it is. I really do because it's a lot of men officers that done that to him and it's always the other person that gets more freedom and everything. He had his phone most of the time. Most of the time I even did I had my phone. I talk to the person that own the car. He snatched my phone put on the phone and say you're you're detained. That don't make no sense how if I'm detained, he's detained cuz at the end of the day, he walked away from me. I stood and just >> gotcha. I understand what you're telling. >> Okay, Marco. So, at this time, turn around. Put James on your back. You're on video doing it. Okay. I wasn't I wasn't messing with you when I said they have the best cameras. Okay. >> I told you I had passenger, but you could see I was >> right. But you said one thing and I counted at least four or five. Okay. >> No, no. I'm saying like I can't grab it one time. >> Right. But now, now it's you grabbed one thing and you're on video grabbing four or five. Okay. >> See? See? That's how I don't like it. See how he arrested him? Now, the whole time this could have been you. You arrested both of us. We're both under arrest. Don't do that. That's why I do not like that. >> Yeah. I That makes no sense. >> I'm not the one that's >> You treat everybody the same way. Even under arrest or not, tell me not. You treat everybody the same way. You get I'm getting handcuffed. He's getting handcuffed. You don't just handcuff me first. Do it all. >> Do you have anything on you? >> No. >> Okay. What's in here? >> I'm not going to lie. Okay. Oh man, I had lost half of my siblings and that anniversaries next month. >> Oh, you know I Is there any way like it's cuz I didn't want nothing, >> right? But you're you're on video, my man doing that stuff. Okay, does that make sense? >> Despite being clearly recorded by highde cameras inside the store, the man continues to deny everything. The officer though has already seen enough. >> You have anything else on you that's going to post me or hurt me? Gone. >> I I was being honest with you. I had >> you you were honest with me after the handcapes came on and you said you took one thing and I I kind of meant like I grabbed it and like >> do you want him to take the bag with you? >> Okay. >> One more time. >> I was being >> you Yeah, but do you remember when I originally started talking to you, you said no, you didn't do anything. You had no idea what I was talking about. >> I I wasn't kidding when I said they have good cameras, man. Okay. And then let me say one thing, right? But but when when I when we asked questions, I promise you nine times out of 10, we know the answer. Okay. It's not It's not to see if you're going to lie. It's just got your partner. I told him I told you I had put just one time. I put some stuff in the back. I told you that it was just one time. Remember >> that's literally all I did. >> I I got you, man. But you're still on video doing it. Okay. And when I asked you, you said no originally and then right now is when you said I'm going to be honest. I did one. >> Uh, what are you going to do with the car? They're asking. >> Uh, if whoever could come get it could come get it. Okay. >> Are you cool with him for one minute? Why not? Bill, >> did you read her stuff or No. No. >> Okay. You want me to do it real quick? I got it. Okay. >> You have the right to remain silent and >> I got to read it to you. Okay. I already know. >> You watch TV shows or what? >> Yep. I watch criminal What is it? Like criminal show. Mind. >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> Um you said you didn't know what she was doing. >> The reason is cuz you said you didn't know what she was doing. You didn't know she came out with anything. >> But um what are you guys charging her for? >> Huh? >> What are you guys charging? >> Be retail theft, too. >> Retail theft. >> Both of them. We just got to add up the amounts. I don't know how much it is. walk out with nothing to check it. >> I know, but it's concealing items, too. >> If I had another case in another county, how does that work? >> I I don't know yet. I got to call them. I got to see what the conviction is. When you said a year ago, >> you said a year ago. >> And how long are you on probation for? >> 2 years. So, I just got on it in March. >> Okay. >> With the itemized list in hand, officers now know the full value of what was taken. And unfortunately for the suspects, the total is high enough to bring serious consequences. >> The value of the stuff >> like 4,500. >> But they're making they're charging both of us with it. >> I'm going to have to ask him, but that's >> I know. But is there any way you could be like, "Look, keep him compliant this whole time like this." >> Yeah, I know. I tried to tell him, but at the end of the day, it's whatever was on camera and they going they going to figure it out. be like, "Look, you know, on camera, it does show him grabbing the four or five pieces, you know, >> cuz like he might find each other." >> I'll ask I'll ask him what he uh it depends like the the courts might see it that way. It's like, "All right, dude." Like, he only took a couple items and >> but a lot of times, >> no, but it's really up to like how the officer is going to write up the report, too, you know? >> Oh, he's going to write the report how he saw it on camera. That's it. Whatever's on camera is how they're going to review it. They probably they're going to read our report, but they're going to watch the camera footage. The state attorney will read that. They take our camera footage, put it on about like what they're going to charge. >> I'll ask them right now what they're gonna do. >> What's up, man? >> I understand, you know, I'm getting charged what I'm charged for, but the only thing I was asking is like the four or five items that I grab, like I was like if that like is that what I'm being charged for? >> It's it's retail stuff. >> What's the amount? >> Oh, I I don't know. But it's the whole thing. >> It's it's going to be everything. Okay. It's it's the intent. And so I'm going to interview when we get there. She said a lot of stuff. Okay, >> does that make sense? So we're going to re we're going to talk in an interview room once we get there. Okay. >> The case ultimately ends with both of the suspects being charged with grand theft. Their case remains ongoing. Number one, a couple that shoplifts together gets arrested together. In this final case, officers with the Eatontown Police Department were called to a Target after loss prevention spotted a couple concealing merchandise in their bags. Here's how things unfolded once officers arrived. >> So, each of them had their own merchandise on them. Um, she's going to split up. I can show you the video right here. It's under 200 combined, but I just wanted you guys I didn't know they're messed up or not, so the video. He opens the package. PSD underwear. They're like $25 each. You grab two of them. You just open the package and dump the empty package right there. And the actual concealment comes in a little bit. Open it. And then bring it over to this rack right here. There's like there's like a handoff that happens. So, he has it in his right hand. He goes over to the rack, puts it in the like holds it in the pants right there. She comes up, grabs it, and you're going to see like the motion to the bag. She puts it in her purse. >> You guys have licenses with >> Mine's in my car. >> I have their name I just got on paper. I don't know if it's true or not, but spelling is a little horrible, but I can tell you. How old are you? 18. >> It's 21. >> 18. What's your name? >> Nadian gardener. N A >> You're not going to lie, are you? >> I'm not I'm not even from out here, so I a >> n a short. >> G A R I N E R. >> You guys like middle name? Not >> A >> birthday social. >> How do I spell that? >> D S H A W N. After verifying their information, officers identified the suspects as 21-year-old Naen Gardner and 18year-old Deshawn Brown. >> What brings you guys to New Jersey? >> I'm visiting. >> You live here? >> Yeah. >> Where do you live now? >> In Lakewood. >> I'm sorry. >> Lakewood. >> Lakewood. Do you uh You've never had a permit or anything like that in New Jersey? No, >> I was just starting on >> You just moved here? >> Yeah. Okay. So, obviously, if you guys haven't realized it, um, in effort to leave, you're subject to a shoplifting investigation. One of course target me another one other form. With the store handling the documentation, the officers take a moment outside to plan their next steps. Right now, there's a uh male and female shop in there. Okay. Um I don't have any driver's licenses or anything like that with them. I didn't get the whole story from prevention, but they got stopped after consuming some merchandise. What's that? He's going to press. >> He's going to call us. >> He said he already filled since he already called us. He submitted the case number. He has to. >> Okay. >> What they walk out the store? >> Yeah. So, he kind of opens up the package and did like a little exchange with her where she stuffs in her purse and then they try to walk out right here. He stops. So, where that lady's walking out right now? >> Stop right there in the foyer or past them. They were passed off once a car. >> Yeah. >> Where were that lady that had a sand >> and they concealed it? >> But I can't you can't really see on camera besides them. >> 41 41. >> Yeah, I guess. Well, so that's 60 something dollars for 60. I thought it was 200. No, it's less than the guy was 43 something and it was the remainder of it. two shops. I think I don't have the film. Do they live here or do they live in Ohio? accountable. She's a valid Ohio card. >> Cool. Thank you. Can you just >> In total, Naen attempted to steal $62 worth of merchandise, mostly clothing, while Deshawn tried to get away with about $44 in merchandise. Mhm. Are you guys out there busy today or >> making yourself busy? >> Yeah. >> So, it's NG. Okay. If you can't read it. sale 43.99 female 62. >> Yeah, he was 4323.99. What were they getting? All apparel t-shirts. >> It was whatever is in by that underwear zeppelin. I'm assuming t-shirt wrangler Zeppelin PSD. You did the place for what? Yeah. >> All yes. Get an actual one. >> What? Let me get an actual one. >> This is the only one I have. Now that the paperwork's done and statements are secured, officers move to wrap things up. The store has no intention of letting this slide. Yeah, >> definitely. I appreciate that. >> Thank you. >> Good. You want to stand up for me? >> Just take the bag off and put it in if you don't mind taking the hat off, too. >> Yeah. >> You want to throw your keys in there? Just honestly, take everything out of your pocket. Okay. Sure. That's all I have. Good. Thank you. >> I'm going to place this in your bed. >> That's fine. You go now. >> No. Run away from me. I'll let you We're going to come out here and make a left. We're going to go to that first car. With transport just ahead, officers complete a final search on Naen before securing her in the vehicle. >> Door. Hold on. Kind of searching for you in a minute. Anything on you? >> No. again. Are you going to hand the slide in? With the female suspect already secured, the officers now turn their attention to escorting the male suspect out of the store. >> Uh, sure the rest. >> I'm going to take these off. Okay. >> Um, I'll take it off. Yeah. Turn your hand this way out. Palm out. Thumb up. >> Is this just a strap here? >> Yeah, it's just magnet. You got any of your pockets? Is there going to stick me or poke? Uh, no. Any of your pockets at all? Um, you could try it out. I'm not sure if I got it in the bag. Is there any bags to go real quick? Um, I would What's up? I wouldn't play like history in there, but it's on like the front wallet. >> Wallet? >> Yeah, your wallet. >> Uh, yeah, it's in there as well. >> Yeah, grab all that. >> Which uh So, basically, we're going to bring you back to the police department if uh what you guys stole was was not a uh significant enough of amount to go to jail. Okay. So, it's a disorderly person's offense. He went photographed, fingerprinted. Both suspects face shoplifting charges, but with no prior offenses, they were let go with a summon to appear in court. Do you think these people learned their lesson? Let me know what you think in the comments down below, and I'll see you in the next one.
