These fraudsters thought no one was watching, but the cops were three steps ahead. Here are five cases when cops surprise the out of fraudsters in the act. Number five, duo gets busted trying to cash a fake check. On December 26th, 2024, police responded to a bank after receiving a report of two women allegedly attempting to cash a fake check. Upon arrival, the primary officer wasted no time confronting the suspects at the drive-thru window. Here's how things played out. >> How's it going? Um, does the bank have your ID? >> I don't know. >> Okay. Who Who's trying to cast a check? She was the guy that she cleaned out for her and I tried to catch her. >> You tried to catch it or >> she was hers and I was for her. She She cleaned out for him and she >> Okay. Is there a problem? >> Uh there's a problem with the check. >> Cleaning out. >> Okay. Who? Okay. So, the check was written to you? Yes, sir. >> Okay. But but you were the one trying to catch it. >> Just cuz you don't have a bank account. day. >> Okay. Okay. >> Um, >> do y'all have y'all's IDs? >> Okay. They've got both of both of y'alls. >> Okay. All right. >> Is there a problem? >> Apparently, there's something wrong with the check. I I don't >> Well, then I don't want to guess. >> I I don't know what it is. They just called us. >> I don't know. I didn't I didn't know they until we figure out what's going on. I'll just have y'all hang out for me. >> Well, I don't need no trouble. I've got to get down. >> I I understand that. >> I understand. I have my pick up the kid. >> Can you roll the window down? I I can't hear her. >> I got to go pick up. >> Okay. Okay. Well, like I said, >> just take whatever. >> I'm just trying to help. >> I I I get that. >> I know, but I don't have time. I didn't think it of a deal. I like I said, I've got another officer coming so he can talk to the bank and figure out what what the problem is. >> We were just She just worked with the guy. >> Who'd you get it from? >> They're in a hurry to leave now that the officers are asking questions. One of them claims it was a payment for a cleaning job, but that explanation doesn't quite line up with what the bank teller noticed. >> How are you doing? Good. All right. Cool. >> All right. So, talked to the lady on the phone, >> okay? >> And she do not know. She don't know a ton of lake. She told me that she wrote check 6304 for 7509 to the water company. She just noticed it because I'm like, well, I got 6304. If you can see that 7509 >> Mhm. >> it's been written over. >> Yeah. They they they found this [ __ ] and so then they did a whole new criminal. I mean, they did a whole another situation um by writing over this check and making it seem like that they the check was originally to them. So, this was for her water company. So, her water could probably possibly get cut off because it never made it and they found it and they tried to write over it. So, that's another thing going on. We do have copy of the checks. We can keep this. If you need a copy, I can give you this or I can I don't know which one. >> I need this one. >> Okay. Um >> you have their IDs? >> Yes, we have their IDs. We have make copies of those, but we did write everything down. >> Our corporate security did say that if if any arrests are made that we have to have an officer's name and badge number for our stuff. >> I'm officer 144. >> Sorry. >> So Tanya Lake is one who has an account with us. >> Okay. >> Sherry Anderson do not bank with us. So that's why you see two signatures on the back of it. Sher Anderson doesn't bank with us. and she was going to get Tanya Lake to deposit it in her account. >> Okay. >> So, I don't know how that works when you got two people. >> So, so did did she say this was stolen? >> The woman I mean basically what it being written over. >> Could I have her phone number? The victim? >> Yes. >> Name and phone number. >> What did you say? >> 144. >> 144 to the check. Before cashing the check, the teller took the extra step of calling the issuer. That decision paid off as the issuer confirmed that the check was meant for a utility payment. With that, the teller contacted police and stalled the suspects just long enough for officers to arrive. Now, the officer wants to hear it directly from the victim. >> Yes. >> Hi, M. This is Officer Rios with the Hot Springs Police Department. Yes, sir. >> Uh, so you did not write a check on the on December 24 of 2024 to a Sherry Anderson? >> No, I did not. >> Okay. There's a um this check has $300 um on it for housekeeping. Just confirming that you did not write that. >> I did not. Okay, >> that check that check went to the water department >> for $75.97 >> 116. Are you clear to copy? >> Go ahead. >> That's Tanya Lake. She validate her with a file number. She's got a parole violation as well as possession through ash blunt. [Music] 144 copy. Header to the call notes. I got another one to run. >> It's going to be by DO number. All right. So, uh Okay. You said you said that this check was going to be sent to or this check was sent to your water company. >> Yes. >> And and what company is that? [Music] >> I don't know. I'd have to go through all my papers to find it. >> Okay. >> Could I get a little bit of your information? >> Yeah. What do you need to know? >> So, uh, what's your name again? >> Janice. Okay. >> With the victim's details confirmed and her account matching the tellers, the officer now needs to know whether she intends to take legal action. >> Okay. And are you willing are you willing to pursue charges, >> sir? I don't know what to do. [Applause] >> Charges and you find them. What What happens? Oh, we have them here. >> You have the people there? >> Yes, ma'am. [Applause] >> Well, they broke the law. It's all I know. So, you got to do what you got to do, I guess. >> Yes, ma'am. We'll do. Uh, >> all right. >> So, that should be all the information I need for you right now. Uh, you may get a phone call by a detective. Um, and you know, you just tell them the same story that you write, you wrote a check. Do you remember what day it was that you wrote this check for? >> Uh, let me see. [Applause] I wrote the check. 12 23 >> of 24 for how much? >> $75.97. >> Okay, >> perfect. Uh uh but you don't remember the water company's name? >> If you can hang on, maybe I can go find it. Yeah. >> Can you hang on? >> Yes, ma'am. >> All right. >> People utility billing. >> Utility billing. >> Utility billing services. >> Yeah, that's what it says. >> Okay. All right. >> Still looking out for the victim, the teller takes a moment to warn her about her other accounts, just in case her other accounts have been compromised as well. >> Miss Raker, >> when you finish, I can I can hang. I'm going ask her to look through her other checkbook. Make sure nothing else is missing. >> Okay. I got it right here is the city of street utility village service. >> Okay. All right. Yep. Very much. Thank you. Um we're going to handle our business here on our end. I appreciate your cooperation and everything like that. Uh, you might you may be getting a call by detective. I don't know yet, but um I appreciate it, Miss uh Ram Maker. >> All right. Thank you. >> Yep. >> Could I get >> Could I get your Who's the one that noticed it? [Music] >> Okay. Can you do me a favor? When you get a chance, go through your checkbook and make sure there's nothing else missing. I mean just for discomfort, >> but I think um Officer Rios want to talk to you again. But >> talk to you. >> No, I just need to talk to you. >> Oh, okay. Well, Officer Real need to talk to me. But just go through your checkbook, make sure nothing else is missing. But if you tried to mail it off and it just got misplaced in the wrong hand, then you should be okay. Okay. >> Now, it's time to walk through exactly what happened before officers arrived. The teller begins recounting how the two women attempted to cash the fake check. >> Thank you. You have a great day and happy. >> Were you at the window? >> Uh, she's at the window, but we've switched. >> Okay. >> So, when when you got the check, the driver was on that handed it to you? >> I'm guessing. >> Well, yeah. >> Yeah. Okay. Yeah. Well, put like this. The first first time she came, the lady that's in the passenger seat, >> she was trying to deposit into her ATM machine. And the other guy who was Clovis, which was here at the time that noticed all this, >> he's gone already. But she tried to go to AT machine and we was waiting on the customer. She was basically up behind our customer who was waiting on >> foot or whatever trying to figure out why the 18 soon take the check. We told her she need to step back >> because we were waiting on the customer. So when she finally got to us, she had the check. We brought the check. Well, she gave us the check or whatever >> and we noticed that um it was made out to somebody who was not here. So we told her that we need Sherry to be here, which is in the back seat, I guess, um with her ID before we can negotiate it. And so, um, they came back or whatever and that's when they had Sherry back and they gave me Sherry driver license, whatever. He had Clovis had already left, so he was already gone. But when I got it, um, I was looking through her check profile history to see, you know, check lines and just something about me. I'm always just being nosy. But I was looking through and I realized something just wasn't right. So, I had her come over to look and I'm like, housekeeping for $300. So that's why I told her, I said, "Call Miss Ray Maker before I make this transaction because I could have easily put it into the account holder account and they would have got away with $300." But when we called and found out that she didn't want to check to her, that's when we proceed with you guys. So Sher came second, but at first um Tanya came by herself trying to do >> violation, >> which is the account holder at Regions. >> Okay. So Tanya tried to cash it first, >> right? She tried to she tried to go to the AT machine. Um, so the driver really didn't do anything? >> The driver was just >> there. >> There. >> Okay. What's your name? >> Oh, Lord. Victoria Barry. >> After confirming all the details inside, the officer steps back out to continue the investigation with the suspects. >> I appreciate your time. Always. >> I appreciate your time. Y'all need any info for me or anything? Uh, >> no. But you say you are taking away, right? What's that? You arrested the two ladies? >> Yes, ma'am. So, sorry. Just confirming that the Tanya subject she did she give you the check at the window or not or you just told her to back off? >> Oh, she did give us the check and that's all we noticed it was out to her friend who wasn't here >> the first time. >> The first time? Yeah. >> So, she gave it to you, attempted to do it, and you were like, "All right, you're not sharing." >> Right. Cool. >> And then she came back with >> Cool. >> All right. Cool. I >> I've got another officer coming to talk with y'all. >> I didn't try to help her out. >> I'm sorry. What? >> I didn't pick up the kid. I was just trying to help her out. I didn't know about that. She didn't either. >> Okay. Just just hang out for me. >> Like I said, if if y'all didn't know anything about it, It'll it'll be fine. >> But I got to go. >> You had what? >> Where they at? >> Carpenter. >> Oh, they at like a daycare or something. >> Baby, we got to get the baby. >> Where's that? Hey, we just >> Well, that's what I need to talk to y'all, but I don't know exactly what >> I do. I do. She don't need that. >> Okay. >> So, who did who did you get it from? >> Okay. They claim it's payment for cleaning a house, but their conflicting answers are starting to raise red flags. >> So, he he's the owner of the house you were cleaning. >> I don't know yet. I haven't talked to them. >> Okay. So, so a friend of the homeowners >> apparently apparently >> uh apparently the bank still has both the IDs. So, I haven't I haven't got that yet. I haven't talked to the bank yet. I've just been talking to them. Um she was the one that had the check given to her. She has a bank account here which is she was just trying to cash it for her. >> You said Chad. >> What What was the house that you cleaned? >> Okay. Yeah. So out in the county. >> Okay. >> All right. Um >> do you work for like a company? You just do it on the side or >> I did visibility. >> Okay. So So who is Chad to you? >> Okay. >> Okay. So he So Chad paid you. [Music] >> I said okay. So why why was Chad paying you? >> Let me run to the >> No, ma'am. >> The officers don't hesitate to point out the obvious. The suspects seem more focused on leaving than clearing things up. >> So, I'm gonna be honest with with with you. You tell me over and over and over, you got to go, you got to go, you got to go. It does not look good. I only had five. >> It's not even your kid. So, why are you worried about it? >> It's my knee. >> Okay. >> I'm just being honest with you. You telling me I got to go. I got to got to I got to go does not look good to me. >> Right. I understand. I'm just going to hurry anyway. >> I get it. >> You're right. >> If somebody was going to jail right now, you'd both be in handcuffs. >> I'm just here trying to figure out what's going on. Okay. >> After confirming the details and running a background check, officers find that one of the suspects has an outstanding warrant, and that alone is enough to take her in. Aside from whatever's going on with the bank, you have a parole violation warrant. Go ahead. Put your hands up there. >> They know that's good that I'm sick. Okay. >> You got anything on you? You going to poke me or anything like that? >> No. >> What's the Okay. You said what? >> I have contact. >> Oh, okay. >> Okay. You're good. You're good. You're good. Go ahead. >> Tell me that. [Music] No, ma'am. Handcuffs. >> What's that? >> Your car? >> Yeah. >> I don't care. That's what you want? Go ahead and set back here for me. >> I'm sorry. >> You're good. >> Face the car for me. >> You're just being detained right now. Okay. >> Until we figure out what's going on. Okay. You have anything that's going to poke me, kick me, anything like that? Anything in your pocket? >> You got anything in your bra you shouldn't have? >> Hang on. Hang on. Give me one sec. >> Okay. >> You're good. You're mine. Huh? You're mine. >> Uh, >> are you taking us to jail? >> Are you taking him to jail? >> To what? Are you taking us to jail? >> Uh, you're being detained right now. >> Yes. >> In the end, both women were charged with check fraud and uttering a forged instrument. Number four, man played dumb, but the cops were already two steps ahead. Up next, officers are called to a Chase bank after reports of a man attempting to cash a fraudulent check. Here's what unfolds once police arrive. The suspect is in an orange shirt, dreadlocks, and shorts. He's sitting down the lobby there. Anybody else? >> I'm 102 with the security guard. >> He says he's what? >> Sitting down in the lobby. [Music] >> Yeah, I know. Hey sir, >> how you doing? Sir, >> you're being detained. >> Second figure it out as well. We just got called here. >> What am I being detained for? >> Passing a bad check. >> Passing a badge. >> Yes, sir. >> Hold on. >> I know. I know. [Music] 14 12. >> So, can I get who called, >> please? >> Hi, how are you? >> I'm good. How are you? >> Good. So just to make sure it is the gentleman that Okay. Absolutely. So what's what's going on? >> So let me get you the paper. >> He came from uh the window trying to do a withdrawal. Um I just heard today that there was a new you know fraud where they were using the treasury checks. >> Okay. >> So I saw it was recently open like 5 days ago. So I ran it by manager Erica. >> The theft has been prevented but the suspect's troubles are just beginning. bank staff had seen enough to know exactly what kind of scheme was unfolding. >> We thought it was suspicious >> cuz I was in a manager's meeting this morning and they already told us the alerts about treasury checks that are being fraudulently deposited with new accounts that have been recently opened and then they try to get the money right away because by regulation we have to release the money by the next day. >> Okay. >> So, this is a new account. He came in to do the withdrawal. >> Yeah. It was like for 5,000 400 something. >> So, when he told me about it, I said, "We're not touching anything. we're going to let me, you know, do some more investigation. Um, we started doing that and then I I went out there and I said, "Hey, where did you get the check from?" I said, "Who's it? You know, what's it for?" And he says, "Oh, it's for my car." And I was like, "Oh, okay." So then he goes, "Hold on." I the person that gave me the check is outside. So then he's I'm watching him patrolling all through the whole plaza trying to figure he's calling them the whole time. >> 15 minutes later, he comes back in and he's like, "Oh, it's a treasury check." >> So now he knows all of a sudden what it is. He didn't know before >> it was for a car. >> Okay. >> So, hi sweetie. >> How hard? >> So, basically, they got an alert about fraudulent treasury checks and he came in with a treasury check. So, they opened a brand new account. Then, they tried to deposit the treasury check because the bank has one day to release the money. >> So, now he came in today to try to take the money out in full. And because we already aware of the situation, he came and brought it to my tent. So he did leave the first time and then she said he was walking around on the phone like trying to figure out what to do when they started questioning him and then he came back. >> Okay. >> And then so this is bogus. >> Yeah. >> And then we already restricted the account on our side too. And then it was funny because at present when I went outside some of the questions that they told us to ask was that like where did you get the check from? What's the purpose of the checklist? We get the treasury checks from July. >> That's right. That's what not for a car. >> No. So then I went out there and he's like oh it's for a car. And I was like you don't even know what's in your account right now. So that's when he left to call them and then all of a sudden he comes back. He's like, "Oh, it was a treasury check cuz he was like, "Let me go outside cuz the person who gave me the checks outside." >> So you had the check. >> He actually No, cuz that was deposited on another day. >> Yeah. Yeah. Cuz it was >> So he was doing a withdrawal. >> So deposit already made and said he's making a withdrawal of the money. >> With the truth now out in the open, officers suspect that the man may not be acting alone. And this check might be just one part of a wider scam. >> No, it is fraudulent. Like you've confirmed it with the IRS. >> Well, we've confirmed it with our chase to our restricted uh fraud department. What happened? >> What are you trying to do? Talk. >> Oh, it's uncomfortable. >> I have stuff in my pocket. You guys are trying to put me on the ground. >> I have stuff in my pocket. >> You're not on the ground right now? I know I'm on the ground. Stop reaching into your pocket. >> I know, but it's just uncomfortable. Can I take it out of my pocket? >> Keep your hands out of your pocket. >> Can you guys take it out of my pocket? >> What is in your pocket? >> My phone and a lighter and my ear and my earbuds. >> Why do you need them out of your pocket? How is there holes in my pocket? It's going to fall. >> If it falls, we'll pick it up. Okay. It'll be on the chair, sir. >> You need What do you need? >> Let him do it. >> Can you pronounce your first name? >> Nick. >> Nick. Follow me over here. >> Can I Can I get up? >> Yes. >> Stand up. Just follow. >> Are you here by yourself? >> No. Where my ride? >> Your ride's here? >> Yeah. >> Where's your ride at? >> What? Right over there in that parking lot over there. >> What type of car? >> Uh, [Music] >> what color? Black. >> I don't know. >> You got to give us more SUV. Sedan >> SUV. >> SUV. So black Durango. >> Yeah. Yeah. Durango. >> Okay. >> That's that Dodge. >> Yeah. >> Texting. >> I can see the passenger seat, but I can't really see the driver's seat. >> Uh comes back to Rockidge, which >> it's empty. the driver's seat that I looked at. I'll pass. >> He um he opened the account in Coco, >> so I don't know. >> This guy? >> Yeah, this guy in the back. >> Even the officers know the man inside isn't the one pulling the strings. But without a solid lead on the person who brought him here, they're counting on the suspect to tell them everything he knows. >> The problem is this guy can be in any of these places right now. just watching. >> I was surprised here after all of us pulled up next door. >> What's up, man? >> Mr. Buckmaster. >> Yeah, he's called Nick. >> Nick? >> Yeah. >> Okay. Is Nick >> Buck Master? >> Buckmaster. You from Rockland? >> Yeah. >> What you doing over here, man? >> Just pausing and check that happened on your face. >> Okay. Uh I'm Carlos, by the way. Oh, they got your handcuff. >> What's up, man? I'm I work up in C. They call me out here to talk to you trying to figure out what's going on. >> Um, so what's the deal? >> So I had I had a friend that like knows I like was struggling with like getting a job. >> Okay. How long you been looking for a job? >> I actually just got one like last week. >> Yeah. Where you working at? >> Pockets and putters. >> Pockets and putters. >> Pockets and putters. >> Pockets and putter. What is that? Like a golf thing. A mini golf thing. >> Mini golf. >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> What you doing over there? Uh bartending is just serving people food. >> Bartendering? Yeah. >> You're actually mixing the drinks or >> uh not yet, but first I'm gonna be serving people food and making the food and then I'll be leaving the bartender. >> Okay. So, right now you're just serving what you want to get to the bartender thing. >> How many bartenders over there? >> Uh two. >> Two? >> Yeah. >> They got it pretty locked down. Then you can slide in there. >> Might not be able to slide in there. >> Well, I just know cuz some places like hotels, some be like, "Yo, those are the four bartenders. They got it locked down and nothing else happening." And anybody else trying to get in, they're like, "Nah, >> it's not like that." >> No. I mean, there uh No, it's not like that. >> No. Hey, I just asked. I was never a bartender, but when I go to the bar and I tip, I'm like, "Yo, the people got to make decent money if I'm tipping them." >> But I've worked at places like that, though. >> You know that they got it locked down. >> You ain't getting that. >> You ain't getting that. >> Now it's time for the hard questions. >> Uh, okay. So, >> boom. So, this check. So, what's up with the Well, first off, they said the account was open yesterday. >> Yeah. Okay. So, what's the deal with that? >> So, basically what I was saying, um, I have this friend. He knows like I was struggling trying to find a job. >> Okay. >> And he was like, "Yo, I know someone that can help you make some money." Okay. >> I was like, "Okay, cool. Who?" He was like, "Ya ya ya. It's this person." >> Mhm. >> And >> yada yada yada. This person, >> it's I call him Unk. I don't I really honestly don't even know his name. >> Okay. And then who's the person you know that put you in contact with him? >> His name is Jeremy. He's more like an acquaintance. Okay. So, Jere Jeremy's like your acquaintance. He knows you you're hard on time. You're hard on money right now. You need some money. He's like, "Yo, I know a dude who can help you out. His name is Okay. Is Jeremy You got his phone number?" >> No, actually, no, I don't. >> You got it in the phone? >> No, I have him on Snapchat. >> Okay. What's his snap? You know it? >> Uh, not. Yeah. Actually, yeah, I do know it. >> What is it? >> Yeah. >> Oh, that's it. >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> How you know Jeremy? through through uh work from my previous jobs. >> Okay. Where was that? >> It was at Girls. >> Girls? >> Yeah. >> Okay. So, you met Jeremy at Girls. He knows you're hard on money right now. And he's like, "Yo, I got a boy. His name is >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> And uncle was like, I know someone that could get you some money." And I was like, "Okay, cool. How?" And he was like, >> "Aunt? You got a phone number or anything for a?" >> No. >> How do you get How did you talk to? >> Actually, no. I do got a Can I go? I I don't know his phone number. >> Yeah. Yeah, you can look it up. >> Thank you. >> Right now, the suspect keeps it simple. According to him, his uncle gave him the check, claiming it was for a tax return. Unfortunately, his explanation won't hold up for long. >> There you go. >> Okay. >> So, that's number. He's like, "Yeah." >> So, he put you in contact with >> Yeah. >> Okay. Then what happens there? And uncle's like, "I can help you get some money." >> And all you got to do is basically just deposit this check. >> Okay. >> And if they ask to say it's for your tax returns. >> Okay. >> I was like, "Okay, cool." >> But >> Okay. >> Yeah. And then >> are you expecting a tax returns? >> I've never done tax returns. >> Okay. So, you're not expecting a tax return? >> I mean, I I'm I actually No, I could be expecting a tax return, but it's it's not >> Nick. Nick, >> chill. >> Okay. >> All right. No, I'm saying the tax return is not that it's not that's not on that. It's not the check. >> Yeah, it's probably like a direct deposit. >> Yeah, but >> who gets tax returns and actually gets a check anymore, bro. >> Yeah. >> You know what I mean? We're in 2024, bro. Everything is direct deposit. >> But I was What I was saying was I should be actually expecting a tax return from >> Okay. >> from my previous job at GS. That's what I was saying. >> Okay. Did you file your taxes already? >> No. >> So then how you going to get a tax return? >> I I I thought they just come in the mail. You have to file. >> You got to file your taxes, bro. If you want to get a return, right back. You got kids. >> That's why you ain't done your taxes yet, bro. >> I lost my mom. Dude, >> get you some kids and you'll make sure you file them babies every year. >> Well, >> don't have kids just to have a tax at first. >> All right. So, you ain't expecting a check then. You know something shady with the check. Let's be real, right, Nick? But you're hard on time and you trying to make some money, right? >> Yeah. This ain't the first time I come out here and talk to somebody about this, okay? So, I'm just going to keep it real with you, okay? >> With the officer pressing the right questions, it doesn't take long for the suspect to give up key information, details that could point straight to whoever's really behind the scheme. >> Who are you paying once you got the money out? >> Who would I Who was I going to pay? >> Yeah. Who was you going to pay? Nobody going to give you a check for 5,900 bucks and not expect to get paid. >> Oh, yeah. I was going to give it most of the money was going to go to him, but I was going to get like >> to who? Unk. >> Okay. You say, "Where's Unk? Is out here somewhere?" >> Well, the guy said the guys ain't found him yet. He's in that his car is still out there supposedly is what I heard. >> Ready? All right. So, again, you you've been on a long road trip like at least twice now with Unk, right? Back and forth from Rocklage. You've known him for two weeks. You described him bald, big chain, right? Like gold chain. All right. So, the car that's out there, that's his, correct? Or at least what he came in. All right. So, I run the plate and this is what >> that him. Okay. >> Okay. >> Appreciate it. >> Um, all right. So, you don't know. You say you think you think you know you think he may have got it from someone else. He said, >> "Yeah, but I'm not too sure, but I got the check from him for sure." >> Okay. So, he gave you the check for sure. Uh, and then at the 5940260, you were going to keep >> like 2,000. >> 2,000 >> 1,500 maybe at the least, but 2,000. >> Was it Did you guys have an agreement beforehand? Like >> Yeah, it was somewhere from around uh a,000 to 2,000. [Music] >> Okay. So, no set amount though. >> Yeah. No, no specific set amount. >> Okay. Just a you want to make some money. I'll be honest with you, man. A lot of times they send people like you in here to cash. You know how much money you get? >> How much? >> Zero. In case it doesn't work. >> Zero. And not only that doesn't work. Sometimes it works, but Uncle takes all of it. >> You just the pawn, man, to be real with you. That they send in send in to go ahead and cash these checks. Why you think Uncle didn't do it? >> You know what I mean? Why didn't do it if it was that easy? >> Cuz he knew he cuz he know what time it is, bro. Uncle, how old is Uncle? >> And just like that, the suspect is out of excuses, leaving him solely accountable for trying to cash the fake check. >> Uncle looks like he's in his like >> 30s, 40s. I've been around, bro. >> He He's He essentially sets you up. If it's too good to be true, it's too good to be true. >> Huh? >> Like, what what loss does he have now? You know what I mean? >> Nothing. You guys could literally look away for two seconds. He can hop in the car and slide off. >> Well, there's people by the car, bro. We >> I know. >> But yeah, he ain't just going to walk away, though. I mean, he may walk away today, right? But unfortunately, you're the one that comes in here to pass this check. You know what I mean? You got it from him, so he possessed it. Where he got it from, I don't know. That's why I'm asking you. >> I I'm being 100% honest. I don't know what you got. >> Have you ever cashed any more of these checks for them anywhere else? >> Literally just This is the first time. >> First time. First and first and last. >> Yeah. For first and last. >> And you've never been in trouble before. >> I've never been in no type of trouble. >> You got a criminal record. >> Pick the big one. >> Yeah. >> I got in trouble one time for giving my friends free food. I was working at a store, but that was it. >> Well, that's what the store >> Yeah, that's normal. >> This is um >> All right. Um, give me a few. Let me talk to them outside real quick. Unfortunately, man, you're going to go to jail today, bro. >> You know what I mean? I'm just being real with you. You know, I can't we can't we can't overlook this, right? This is almost $6,000. >> How am I even supposed to know? >> How are you supposed to know? Let's be real. Let's Let's use Let's use our brain here, right? We just spoke about it. >> No, you're right. >> You know what I mean? >> You're right. >> You knew, >> right? You knew. You just didn't know this was going to happen, right? Cuz if this if this wouldn't have happened, you'd been straight, right? You knew what you were walking into, bro. >> I kind of did, but I didn't cuz like it was like I didn't think I really didn't think it was I didn't think it was a fake check. >> He says it with confidence, but the officers aren't buying it, and they're quick to expose how little sense his story makes. I just I just wanted to let you know because you've never done your taxes. >> You've never done your taxes, bro. Why would you be getting a tax? >> IRS has all that I've been >> and and let me tell you this, bro. Let's be real. If I got a tax return for $6,000, why the would I give half of it? >> Do you have a bank account elsewhere? >> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You got Bank of Space >> cuz I'm I'm like a little bit indebted at that bank. >> Yeah. He told me he's in debt at that bank and it's fine, bro. Hey, right now everything's expensive. I get it. Times are hard. People are trying to do anything they can do. >> But you can't sit here and say you ain't know the check was fake. How you supposed to know, bro? You knew it was fake. But you're not a bad guy. You're in a hard spot right now and you're just trying to make a living. I get it, right? I get it. If I was in your position, why not think about it, right? But >> there's a reason why Unk sent you in and Unk didn't come in. >> Cuz he knew what he was doing. >> Yeah. >> He knew he knew that he wasn't going to >> Well, and I'm not going to say he knew what he was doing cuz you knew what you was doing, too. You just didn't know we was going to be on it like this. >> This ain't county, bro. This the city of Orlando. >> Can we agree there? >> Yeah. >> Come on. Let's be real. Right. >> You're right. But at the same time, I didn't know it was a fake check, but I kind of was like suspicious about it cuz it was like >> even if it was real, it's not your it wouldn't be your money essentially. You know, I mean, it would never be real because you never did your taxes. >> Let's be real. You never did your taxes. >> $50,000. And I've been doing my taxes for >> And you ain't got no kids, bro. >> 20 something years. That's why I was That's why I didn't know like >> Well, in the future, your taxes will only arrive to you magically if you go and sit at a tax office or you do it on like an app, you know, and the federal government will say you're getting >> the officers now try to get more information about the man's so-called uncle, but it quickly proves to be difficult. >> An Unk isn't going to be the one to give you your tax return check, right? get in the mail or direct deposit like we spoke about. Nobody uses checks anymore. >> Did you happen to see did he have any other checks like made out to other people? You know what I mean? Like if he's doing this to others, is he going to scam additional? Is he going to screw with other people like you? You know what I'm saying? Like >> did you see any other checks in? >> Oh, no. No. No. I didn't see any checks. >> Did you see a printer or anything like that in the car? >> They they said the Do you They said they can see the card in there. Okay. All right. Um, Nick, right? Yes, sir. >> It was a pleasure speaking with you, man. My name is Carlos. All right. I just came here to talk to you pretty much. That's what my job is. Let me go out there. Let me talk to them. Let them know we got going on. Like I said, today you're going to go to jail, bro. Okay. Um, and then once we once we figure everything out, uh, if you got any questions or anything, I'll be more than happy to answer them for you. >> Um, am I going to the jail in Orlando? Yeah. >> So, um, >> bond amount, things like that. I'll be honest with you, bro. I don't know. When they get over there, they'll look up the bond amounts and they'll be able to tell you. And then 10% of that. >> Oh. Uh, how long am I usually like how long am I going to be in there for? Like a day, two days, three days. >> If you bond out, you'll have a bond. However long it takes you to get in and bond out. If you don't have money for the bond, >> eight to nine hours before >> they'll process you to bond out if you bond out. If you cannot afford the bond, then you make sure you go to first appearance. >> Yeah. And then you got to talk. That's between you and the judge at that point. >> Or if you know somebody, you can reach out to him. But >> he's been cooperative so far. And because of that, the officers take the time to let the suspect know what's coming next. You can call. >> Oh, they'll let me call up there. Yeah. >> What if I don't know their phone number by heart and my phone? >> They'll let you go on your phone and get the phone number. >> Do they have the chargers up there? >> Man, bro, you asking for too much now. This This is the jail, bro. >> Yeah. >> I don't know if my honest answer to you is they probably have like one charger that like if you need to charge your phone to get a number out. Yes. Now, if you ain't going to have your phone, they take your phone away from you, but they'll let you access your phone. They might have a charger for you to get the numbers out and then they probably take that charger away. >> Yeah. >> I once we get there, I don't know what happens after that. I just show up, drop off and leave. >> Are you Are you going to blow and drop me off? >> No, not me. I I drive a car that looks like that. Tell you what for right there. >> Gentlemen, that was asking questions. He's trying to type now so we can get you in and out cuz I just want to be able to get you there. And >> all right, >> the process started so it's faster. Okay. >> Another officer is going to come out. We're literally just hanging out until we get the official go ahead with everything and we're just going to take you over there. Okay? And then you can make a call. You can call any of your family members, let them know. You can call whoever you need to. And whoever if you do are going to bond out, they only accept money or no cash. >> I'll let y'all figure that out. Let me get all this stuff sorted out so we can get you going. >> Can I stand up right quick like this? >> Yeah. Okay. With the investigation and questioning over, it's time for the suspect to head to the cruiser. >> See that police car right over there? >> Yeah. >> Yeah. There. I'm sure you are under arrest. Okay. >> Yeah. kind of figured. >> I guess I mean just because you're in hiccups doesn't always mean you're under arrest. But >> I know after what they told you, >> huh? >> After what they told me. >> Yeah. On the other side. >> You good? Yeah, >> good. >> Yes, I am. >> You want to sit sideways? >> N comfortable for me. >> You want to sit like that? >> Uh, I really can't even move. So, yeah, like this. >> All right. What you can do is you can put your have your legs sit up on the seat and you slide backwards. You want do that? >> Like this? >> Yeah. No, slide backwards. Huh? Hey, Nick. Make the right call. Okay. Good luck. >> Thank you. >> What? >> And thank you for the talking. >> You got this. >> You remind me of my mom way too much. >> Well, then you better call her. >> I know. >> In the end, the man was charged with defrauding a financial institution, grand theft, possession of a counterfeit instrument, and scheme to defraud. Number three, when you're trying to trick people, but you're bad at lying. On August 7th, 2024 in Florida, officers were dispatched to Sea Coast Bank after staff reported a woman attempting to cash a fake check. When they arrived, employees were quick to explain what led to the call. >> Just the company had been seeing a lot of fraud checks going on. So, because of it, they wanted me to report it. So, I had to get the police involved on the check. I'm so sorry. Um, she came in with a check uh today, trying to negotiate it, but the check is fraud according to the company that we spoke to. [Applause] >> Is there somewhere we could talk or >> Yeah. Come just take the um, [Applause] >> thank you. So sorry. >> You have your ID on your ma'am? >> I do. >> I don't. I just explained to her I don't cash that came to me by my billing address. It was a company that I used to work for during the like before the pandemic hit. So, you know, I even reached out to the bank myself, you know, and I even said, "Hey, this was sent to me by my mailing address. I don't need to cash a fake check. I have a legitimate job." >> Okay, you ready? >> So, I'm just saying like I don't need anything on my record cuz I ain't never been to jail for no fraud, nothing. So that's one thing for sure is like I never been to a jail for fraud. I never did fraud. >> The woman quickly offers her excuse, claiming the check was mailed to her unexpectedly as a payment for a job she did years ago. >> That's like the second check I got by mail. The first one I just tossed it because it was like, you know, hey, I don't. But if you look at the back, there's no watermarks or >> So, you know, I don't deal with checks anymore. I usually get everything strictly deposit. So, that's why I'm like curious like, hey, I even called them before I came here and say, "Hey, can you guys verify this over the phone?" She said, "No, >> you still have the letter, the mail." >> It was no letter. It just came in an envelope >> for the envelope. >> And no, I don't have the envelope. Sorry, I kind of tossed it. It came in an envelope with my address >> and it took me >> Did she try to cash it or >> cash? >> She came here to try to cash it. >> No. No. >> Okay. She's saying she just came in here to try to verify its validity. >> No, she asked to verify the check. I asked She spoke to her. >> She told her that she'll verify it and what's her intentions to do check. She was she wanted to cash it with us. I we asked her where the you know check came from, but I'm mistaken. She said that she'd been waiting for it. She's >> completely disappear >> and that they magically just mail her a $9,000 check. >> Yeah. >> What is my next step of filing a complaint against the company that sent We'll be we'll get there in a sec. [Applause] For now, the officers focus on confirming the suspect's personal information. >> You still live at the address of your license? >> No, I was going to change that. Um, I meant to change my address, so I've kind of got to change that on my next day off. [Music] >> Well, that's not my license, but I'm in the process of moving. So that's the I need the process of moving. So that I got to change my license on this week. Well, next week cuz I took today to rip and run, finish my home, doing errands and everything. >> And just like I explained to the young lady, I was like, I don't deal with checks period. Like I usually have my bank to call and verify. I usually come to the bank wherever the check is issued to to have them to verify it. That's why I didn't go to my own bank because I didn't want to deposit and then have fraud hit on my own account. I was like, let me call this bank and see if they can verify it for me. >> She then said that and then I was asking some questions. I'm like, "Did this amount match what they owed you?" Just questions like that. And she's like, "Well, you know, I made about this much. I didn't really think about to add it up and stuff like that cuz that's a lot of money." >> Yeah. >> And um so her story was just not really making sense. >> Well, stay in here. Uh just sit there for us. Go try to figure this out. Right. >> Okay. >> All right. So, just start right here. Print your name >> and then exactly what you already explained us. Just write it down for us. You might be here a minute. So, if you want to have a seat, you can have a seat. >> How long is a minute? >> Like longer than 30 minutes? >> At this point, would I just be like, "Can I just take the charges and you leave?" >> Odd as it sounds, it's just the beginning of the confusing statement she's about to make. >> Even though it's not like >> So, are you admitting that you did something? >> No, I'm just saying. So why would you want to take the charges? >> Just so I can go. >> But you're not leaving. If you take the charges, you be going to jail. Leaving longer than 30 minutes. >> And if you was to see a check from that company, the signature don't even close. >> Okay. >> Nowhere near close. >> And then you know my peoples was like, um, go to the bank, check it out because you don't want to just stretch something that could be what they owed you. And I was like, nah, nah, I really don't need it. I have a I have two jobs now, you know, like what do I really need it? But then >> they got a hold of somebody at that company. >> They did. Well, I tried. Nobody answered for me. And what did they say? >> That is not a good chat. >> Yeah. So, I've been really busy moving and working wise. So, I haven't like take the time out to come to a bank or go to my bank. [Music] >> Okay. >> No, not yet. >> All right. Perfect. >> Yeah. But she 100% >> said she was going to cash it or wanted to cash it. I'm all for like if I can get you the own manager's phone number, you can probably call them, they can verify whatever you guys need. >> Yeah, we would have to get our own number through our phone. >> But EMS is trying to help make the process a little bit faster. >> It's only helping you, not me. But I'm saying like in general it'll help the situation if you get the phone number. >> If we got a phone number, not from you. >> As she pleads her case, another officer is busy verifying her story with a company in question. >> Hello. >> Hi. Hey. How you doing? This is Officer BL with OPD. >> Good. Um, so I guess a check from your company was they attempted to cash out the sea coast. >> That's what I'm saying. Like I can give you the manager's phone number. >> You gave us his name. >> Michael. >> Michael. It's a very common name. >> Oh, please don't make me try to remember the last name. It's It's >> There's probably 20 Michaels that work in our department. >> Do you guys want to press charges? I mean, somebody somebody was trying to defraud your company on $9,000. It's up to you guys. >> But I mean, like, >> so we see this a lot. People get checks from people on the outside. They're like, "Hey, go to this bank, check the C or cash the check, and I'll give you a percentage of it." >> No. >> None of that happened. >> Nobody told me to cash anything. The check literally came by mail. >> You didn't print that check yourself? No, >> you don't have a printer in your car to >> do that >> cuz I've seen that, too. >> I don't have a printer in the car. If you want, you can literally My car is like literally right there. >> You can bring that up. She has to try to contact the order. >> Oh, I know for a fact that I I don't print the checks. I mean, I wish I had the skills to, but >> you don't print the checks or you didn't print that check. Billy print no check at all. I don't have the skills to do it. >> Like I didn't go to college to do all that extra technology stuff. I just went to school with business and law and that was it. >> What's up? >> Um so this is the check. Basically they're saying like it's fake. That's supposed to be up here. >> We need to try like could you ask them if they would call the manager that I if I did give them a number? I know you said it'll be kind of like a race, but >> we can call the company. >> It's becoming obvious she's grasping at straws, and even the officers have a hard time hiding their disbelief. >> You remember the guy last night? >> Cole, Cole, >> isn't that like a desire? >> No, it's Michael Kors. Hold on. [Applause] I heard your voice in there. >> When you call for you go, >> this is what you get. >> Hey, if they if they do want to press charges, do I like email them a statement later? >> Yeah, you can just email them a statement. Just say, "Hey, fill this out." Just someone to say yes, they want to do something now. Enough to make the arrest. Okay. >> So, question. Where do we go next? >> Uh, >> I think your detectives coming out to talk to you. >> But I don't cash fake checks. Like, pants down. Like, I came and wrote down the check and I said, "Hey, I got this in the mail. >> This is what it was." And there was the lady. She came and said, "How did you want to what do you want to do with the check?" She asked me. I said, "Cash it if you can." Like, you know, it was no, "Okay, I'm here to cash a check type thing." >> Yes, I'm in charge of bring. >> She was never been She's never been employed there. And neither is Michael Cole. >> So, what happened today? I know it seems like you probably already detailed that I am, but just so you can catch me up on game so I know what's going on. Last month I got a check by mail from the company that I used to work for >> um >> last month. >> Yeah. >> Okay. What was the name of the company? >> It was um I don't even know the name. I just know it was a call center, but they had closed down >> when the pandemic hit. >> Okay. >> But >> how long did you work there? >> A year. >> A year. >> 6 months to a year before the pandemic came around. >> Okay. What she doesn't know is that the officers already got the real story from the company she claimed to work for. But they let her keep talking. >> You don't remember the name of the company? >> I know. I'm sorry. It's just I I worked so many jobs after that just trying to stay up with >> bills and everything. Um Okay. >> But >> you got direct deposit from them or did you get paid by check from them? >> From them. I got direct deposit. That was like a long time ago with an old bank like >> Okay. So, you don't bank with that bank? >> I don't bank with Chase no more. >> Okay. So, when you work for them, you bank with Chase? >> Yes. >> You got direct deposit from them via Chase? >> Yes. >> Okay. >> Um then after I left from that job, I went and started working. I didn't go to McDonald's right away. >> Mhm. >> I applied for McDonald's, but they said I don't have the qualification skills. So I went >> really >> wow. Okay. >> So I went to SeaWorld got hired at SeaWorld and um >> Yeah. So who you guys? >> Additional finance. >> Okay. So from Chase you went to Additional Finance or >> No, I went to like a different bank after I went to Los Angeles. >> Why you keep moving banks? >> Cuz like >> I had Chase Banks since I was in high school. It was like, >> you know, >> well, first I started with Bank America and then, >> you know, they start talking about how Bank America is scamming people and stuff. Then that's why I moved and changed. >> Okay. >> And my understanding is the check that you came and cash today was from this employer that you used to work at that you don't remember the name. >> No, I don't I mean, yes, but >> Mhm. >> I worked at several jobs. I'm not the type of person to scam anybody. Like I ain't never >> listen listen I don't think you're the type of person that's going to scam anybody >> but I I've had co-workers hitting me up on Facebook >> and they was like hey do you remember the company we used to work for like was like girl I don't remember half the places I worked I was like but sure what about it and they were like oh well they sent me a check for7000 >> her story may be long but the officer only needs a few words to dismantle it is not a call center Okay. For one. All right. Even if you did work at this company. Okay. I call the company. We talked to the company. >> They don't know you and they don't know no Michael Cole. >> They don't know Michael Cole. >> Listen. Listen. Listen. Ashley. Listen. Listen. Okay. That's not true. >> Okay. >> All right. So, I'm going to let you look at this chat. I'm going to let you think about everything that you just told me. All right. I'm going to give you the second one >> and I just want you to tell me the truth about the check. >> Now listen, listen to me. If you just want to stick to that story, that's fine cuz I already But hold on. I already listen. >> I already talked to the company. Okay. They don't know you or Micro. All right. So that's a lie. >> B. You just told me you knew the check was fake. Yeah. You in here trying to cash it. No, I wasn't trying to cash it. >> Okay. >> I came in here to ask him to verify >> because Hey, >> I I spoke to the teller and he said >> you came in here to try to cash a check. >> No, I didn't. I told her. I said I was really skeptical about this check that I got in the mail from a company. >> You just pointed out to me multiple different reasons and multiple different things about the check that you knew was fake. Why you didn't come in here and waste your time and do that? >> Because, like I said, >> Mhm. because of other employee anxieties to work late. Okay, >> that was the only reason why I >> look at this check. >> Process process the truth. >> That is the truth. >> I'm going to step back a little bit. >> Honestly, that is the truth. >> I'mma wait for you to tell me the truth. >> That is the truth, sir. Michael, >> who who are you talking to on the phone? This is a chance to come clean, but she's about to double down once again. >> I just text him. I said, "Hey, the company that you used to work for, they sent the check." >> And I said, "They said that the check >> Can I see what you wrote, Michael?" >> No problem. >> He said, "Didn't you cash the check?" I said, "No, cuz he asked me if I passed the check." When I got it, I said no because I was so busy working. What? Whatever. What number is this? >> That's the WhatsApp number. That's how I communicate with him. >> Is this the person who >> works with the company? Well, >> is this the person who sent you to Jen? >> Yes, we both used to work with the company. >> Okay. >> And he got the same check that I got. And I was like, and I just told him I said, >> can I see? [Music] And I just told him me and him was in a relationship up to like two weeks ago, but it was getting difficult trying to do a long-distance relationship. >> What does this person have you doing? Tell me tell me the the rundown. >> This is Michael. We both used to work with the company together. Not that company, but the call center. and he was telling me that he'll help me pay for my expenses because I was telling him that I was having little problems, you know, minor work needed to get me down in my vehicle. And he was like, "Okay, no worry. I got you. I'll send you a check by mail. You can cash it." And then like as of today, you can clearly see right here, like right here, when I had told him, I was like, "Hey, the check that you sent me at the bottom." I was like when I told him here I was like hey the check that you got the check that you got and you said >> I don't see what you're saying. What you're saying something that's not on the phone. >> No no no here. >> You're telling me something that's not there in the phone. >> No I texted him Monday. I was like hey you never responded. Never responded. >> And now the officers let her know that there will be consequences coming her way. >> I don't have nothing to worry about. All I want to worry about now is like now I'm starting to feel a little uncomfortable. I just want to go home to my kids cuz like now I'm starting to be like >> Well, unfortunately you're not going to go home to your kids right now. >> What I >> Okay, because you just tried to cash a check. >> I didn't try to cash anything. I literally came here and asked the lady. You didn't go get her. I asked her to verify. >> And then you told me the check is from this company. >> Yes. Now you're telling me the text checks from this guy that has some overseas phone number that you're saying is Michael that you've never seen this person. >> I've seen him before. We used to work. >> How do you know that's Michael that's texting me on WhatsApp? >> Because he said he couldn't use his phone cuz he's overseas. And then after that like that's literally the reason why. I'm telling you the truth honestly the truth. Like >> tell me the truth from the beginning. >> So in the beginning me and him had a relationship. >> Okay. Like you clearly see >> a relationship over text? >> No, we was really in a relationship >> like you guys would see each other in real life. >> Yes. >> Okay. >> Then he moved, you know, over there where he's at now. >> Where is that? >> In Connecticut. Overseas. >> Okay. Overseas in Connecticut. >> That's where he said he went to Connecticut. >> Okay. >> Um, personally, I was like, "Okay, we can try to make this work." >> Mhm. Did I have that thought? But I was like, I don't want to do a long >> How long have you guys been trying this long distance relationship thing? >> A good little minute. >> Okay. A good long minute is what a week and a month. >> Okay. And like, you know, it's after a while when you don't. >> She's caught red-handed and it's painfully clear to everyone that Michael is in on it, too. >> His voice every day. You know, you just be like, "Oh, I feel like they're cheating." Or, "Oh, I feel like they're doing this, that, and the third." >> Have you talked to this guy on the phone? >> Yes. >> Call. Can I talk to him? >> Oh, absolutely. What else? [Music] >> Hello. >> Hello. >> I hear you. >> Yeah, I can hear you. Um, question. >> Talk to him about the check. Honey, the the check that you sent me for my expenses since you voted the check. Um, they're saying that it's not a legit check at the bank. >> What? >> They're saying that it's not a legit check at the bank. >> Oh, I see it. >> No, honey. What I'm saying is this. He hung a pill. Oh my gosh. >> Where is Michael from? He asked if I'm still here. I said yes. >> Where is he from? >> England. He has an accent. A Indian accent. >> At this point, the lies aren't fooling anyone, and Michael's involvement is obvious. Despite that, she's still standing by her story. >> He said, "You're in the bank." I'm like, "Yes." So that's why I said he sent me with a check. He said he's like, "I'm going to send you a check to pay for your expenses." >> Okay. Well, you knew the check is fake. >> But I waited until I had a day off to say, "Hey, I came to the bank and I said, "Hey guys, I got a check in the mail." Mhm. It felt a little awkward for me to go to my bank to the deposit. I know it took a long time to process or whatever the issue may be >> and stuff and I was like, you know, can you guys verify this? I was like, I don't care. >> Tell them tell him, call me and then tell him the police don't believe that story when he calls. Like I'm honestly telling you the truth. >> I think whoever this person is has sent you on a mission to try and cash this fake check. >> Nobody sent me on a mission to do anything else. >> I'm telling you the truth like 100%. I never been in trouble. >> And that's okay because unfortunately >> But I'm telling you like honestly like >> You're going to go to jail today. >> But I can't. That's the thing. I'm not I've never been to jail. You're going to have to go to jail today. >> Okay. >> Please don't let me go to jail. >> Like, I'm I'm I'm begging you guys because like >> I never had anything to do with a fake check. >> Mhm. >> I'm telling you like 100%. >> Honestly, >> like really like I'm I'm real dealing you guys. Like I'm I'm serious. >> By now, the officers have heard all they need to make their decision. >> Before you move, >> just raise your right hand real quick. >> Wait, what? Wait one second. Please let me just >> This is real quick. I just want to swear you in just so that we can say what you told me is the truth. And then you can call your mom if you want to call your mom. >> But I really don't want to go to jail. Like that's what I I've never been to jail before. I >> Okay. I'm just going to swear you real quick just to verify I was telling the truth. Okay. Stranger. >> You saw me swear that the testimony you just gave in this case was the truth. The whole truth. Nothing about the truth. >> Yes. That's the whole truth. Like I'm so serious. Like I never been arrested before. I never had anything to do with anything and it's just like it's really difficult for me to even try to process this because it's like I never had to to do any of this before. >> All right, Ashley, stand up for us. Stand up for my mom. >> I'm sure we can we can go ahead and contact her instead. >> I want to contact her and let her know, please. Can I Can I please call her? >> Well, we'll call her in a second. Say, >> I'm telling the truth, though. Like, I never had anything. You guys don't even have to arrest me. >> Can I just call her, please? >> I'm sure it's my fault, please. >> At this point, you're going to be in the custody of those who taken to jail. I don't want to make any decisions for them. >> No, no, no. You don't have to make any decisions. Can you just let me call her on my phone, please? I'm actually doing one thing. Just watch something, please. >> We can walk and talk. Okay. >> Okay. Can I get my phone? >> We'll walk and talk. >> She go walking. >> Can I get I can show you the baby in my in >> You guys don't have to arrest me. We do. >> I mean, >> though she's being taken in, the officers give her a moment to speak with her mother. >> Okay. So, you know, I got a letter in the mail. It was a check that was in the mail and I came to the bank that it's at and they said that it's a fake check. So, they want to um take me down to the jail because they hold the phone. You don't have >> I said um I came to the bank because the they said that the I got a check in the mail. >> Oh, I just hold >> they said that the check was fake and now the officer wants to take me to the Orange County jail to talk about it. >> The check? >> No, no, no. >> You are going to jail. >> They said that I'm going >> to talk about it to get booked into the jail. Mom, can you stop on the phone? >> You can't hold here. [Applause] Star, can you explain to mom that I was trying to tell her that I got a check by mail and I came to the bank for them to verify and they said that I was over here trying to cash a fake check and now they want to take me to the county jail on 33rd, which I wasn't trying to cash the check. I was trying to get them to verify it. >> You're about to go right now. >> Yeah, I'm downtown. If you guys could come and talk to them >> or I'm not coming here. You're going to jail. >> You'll get a phone call. Jail. Okay. All right. We're We're done. >> We're going to get rolling. Okay. >> Ashley, do you have any weapons on you? >> No, I have nothing. >> Okay. >> All my stuff is in my >> What's in this pocket right here? >> Keys. >> Keys to your car. >> Okay. My car again. We're not making any more phone calls right now. Okay. >> But I was telling everybody what happened. You guys just >> You'll be able to get a phone call from the jail when you >> heard anything that happened. >> Okay. >> Ultimately, the suspect was hit with four charges, including fraudulent use of ID, uttering a forged check, grand theft, and defrauding a bank. Number two, man walked in to cash a fake $21,000 check and walked out in handcuffs. On May 25th, 2023, a call from Navy Federal Credit Union brought officers to the scene after a man attempted to cash a $21,000 check that raised more than a few red flags. >> I don't know exactly. >> What's up, man? I'm Deputy Carbon with Orange County Sheriff's Office. Do you have an ID on you? Yes, I do. >> Go ahead and hang up the phone. You're not going to be on the phone for this. >> You have an ID on you? >> Do you have an ID on you? Was my question. You said yes, you do. Do you mind if I see it? What's going on? I'll explain it to you as soon as you give me your ID. My ID is in the car. >> Your ID's in the car? Yes, sir. >> Okay. Go ahead and turn around for me. >> Put your phone on the Put Put your wallet down. Turn around for me. >> Right now, you're being detained pending an investigation. I'll explain everything to you as soon as we step outside. You understand? >> You speak English, right? >> Yes, sir. >> You understood the words that I just told you? >> Yes, sir. >> Okay. So, hang tight. As soon as I get you outside, I'll explain everything to you. Is that pretty clear? >> All right. Perfect. I'm not that. >> All right, I'll explain everything to you as soon as I get you outside. >> That's the third time I tell it to you. Go and walk out for me. >> Why am I pending an investigation? >> I'll explain everything to you as soon as I get you outside, man. What What part of that don't you understand? I'm trying to be very compliant with you, right? Because you're being detained pending an investigation. I'm going to explain to you as soon as I get you out here, man. Just give me a second so I can explain everything to you. >> What have I done? I haven't done anything for you, so I'm not read anything. >> All right. So, I'm Deputy Carbone with Orange County Sheriff's Office. Before I ask you any questions, because I have you detained, I've got to read you your rights. Have you ever been read your rights before? >> Yes. >> Okay. >> Am I able to get my information out the car? >> Take a seat. Take a seat. Stick your feet out. Cross your legs. Can we go for one secure? I might just do my >> Just hang tight, man. Let me read you your rights. If you want to answer questions after I read you your rights, we'll go from there. You don't even know what I'm going to ask you yet, do you? >> No. >> Exactly. So, hang tight for me, man. >> As protocol requires, the officer starts by advising the man of his rights before proceeding with the investigation. >> All right. So, the constitution requires me that you have that I inform you that you have the right to remain silent. Anything you say will be used in court as evidence against you. You're entitled to talk to an attorney now and have him present or now or any time during this questioning. Do you understand? Yes, sir. >> If you not if you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed for you without cost. Do you desire to consult with an attorney first or to have one during this interview? Yes or no? >> Yes. >> Okay. You understand? By saying yes, you I cannot speak to you. You understand that? >> Bring an attorney. >> You can speak to me. >> Do you want to speak to me? Yes or no? If you want an attorney, present, I'm not going to speak to you and then I'm going to go off base what the bank has told me. Okay. >> So, the bank got information that the check you're trying to cash is fraud. >> It's fraud. >> Yeah. And you just tried cash you tried cashing it over the phone. You just tried cashing it in person. >> Yeah. >> How did I try to cash? >> They got a picture of you with the number of the check and the amount for the check because you're you sold the car, right? Yes, sir. >> The car is registered to somebody else. >> So then you tried cashing that check. So you fraudulently tried cashing a check. >> Car registered to the American Americans? No, it's registered to a completely different person. It's not even in your name. >> Who's the car registered to? >> That's none of your concern. The fact you don't know proves my point. Do you understand that? >> No, I'm not saying that. >> So, where did you get the check that you're trying to cash? >> I got it from the for the buyer. >> You got it from the buyer, sir. >> Okay. Who What's the buyer's name? >> America Johnson. >> America Johnson. >> Okay. >> American American Johnson. >> Okay. And how did they get the car? How did he get the check or how did he get the car? >> How did he get the car? >> How did he get the car? >> How did he get the car? >> Yeah, >> I was. >> Okay. The car is not even in his name. So, how did he get the car? How is he trying to sell it to you? >> He's not selling the car. >> From the very start, the man's explanation raises more questions than answers. >> So, what are you trying to do? >> He's buying the car from you, sir. >> He's trying to buy the car from you. Yes, sir. >> Okay. How did you get possession of the vehicle? >> I was given the car. By who? >> Someone came and gave me the car. So, >> you don't have a name. You don't know who you do business with. Anything like that? You see how sketchy that is? >> I know who I do business with. I know that's not a fraud check, sir. The check is fully verifiable on their end as well. >> It It's not. And the bank already flagged you. That's why I was already there. >> How was I flagged, sir? >> All right. Hang tight for me, man. You're just going to run in circles. That's fine. Is this your social security? >> Cool. Hang tight for me. Can you say 102? >> Yeah. Yeah. [Music] Yes, please. >> Cody Martin to the order of Cody Martin. [Music] >> Do you have his ID? Oh, >> I do. >> Oh, that's a fake ID. That is a fake ID. >> I'm going to run it and find out. But his social matches it. >> A different color. Anyway, >> that ID is weird, man. >> Is this one of y'all's checks? >> Yeah, a different color. >> That's our check. >> It shouldn't be. >> It's a loan draft. >> Yeah. Oh, yeah. I'm thinking regular credit cash check we print out. >> So, they have Did you show them the notes? >> No, I We have a note. I told him what happened and that this is where we are. >> Okay. >> So, >> on the members account, the member, Jameson, >> um he said, >> he can't even tell me where he got the car from. >> Cuz you know, he doesn't have it. >> Yeah. >> Our member visit Patrick Air Force Base >> out in Bard. >> Yeah. Trying to cast. Despite the suspect's claim, there's not a single document, message, or detail to support the so-called car transaction. And from here, evidence against the suspect only continues to pile up. >> All the non-member still lives with him. >> The non-member still has >> He has no proof of the vehicle. >> No, he doesn't. Cuz what they do is they >> He doesn't have fake. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. No, I'm talking about cuz I asked him to pick it up cuz he was >> Let me get to >> So he already moved that vehicle 842. Can you run a 29 for me? >> Sorry. Whoever Jon America Kane is went to Patrick's Air Force Base and tried to cash the same check and got flagged for fraud. So, unless you show me proof of a title of the vehicle, registration of the vehicle with your name on it, or any sort of that stuff, you're going to go to jail today for fraud. Okay. The bank is willing to prosecute you and press charges. This is not a true check. >> So, that check, I have the paperwork with the check to show. >> What paperwork? >> Right there to show what he gave me. This is what he gave you, sir. >> It doesn't matter what he gave you. I need I need the documents I told you. >> This is what he gave So, unless you have the title of the vehicle with a proof of purchase or a bill of sale, you're going to go to jail today. >> I assure you, this is what he gave me. >> This doesn't show me proof that you purchased a vehicle from him or he purchased a vehicle from you and he's paying with this amount. >> That is a auto loan. that you got gave me. >> I get what you're saying, but it's not it's not proof. >> It's not proof. >> I'm not lying. >> Okay. Well, you haven't been truthful yet, so I don't believe you. >> To move the case forward, the officers consult with a bank staff to confirm the validity of the documents the suspect presented. >> I got to run this by you before we go any further. Yeah. Sorry. So, he's saying this is what he used to get the check. Is this what you guys would send out? Would you guys even send out a $21,000 check like that? >> So, what we would do is to the member if the member says, "I'm buying a car from this person." >> So, I feel like they definitely understand, >> right? The member knows. >> Well, that's the member, right? >> Right. That's not him. He should the member would have to say, >> "How did the his name get on the check?" because this person said Cody Martin is selling me a car. >> Okay. >> So, I'm gonna make the check payable for myself and Cody Martin. So, Cody Martin can get the check cuz he's selling me a car. >> So, he told me like this person told Navy Federal that Cody Martin has a car. I'm lying from Cody Martin. This is the amount Cody Martin told me the car is going to cost. >> So, we made the check payable so Cody Martin can cash it. >> But the car is in somebody else's name. That's the thing number. >> Okay. Go. >> Hey. Howdy. Howdy. >> Yeah, exactly. >> All right, Mr. Cody, if if you can't prove to me that you own that car, >> there's nothing I can do for you, >> sir. I have not taken a vehicle, sir. There's nothing stolen. There's no one taking or selling or taking anything. >> So, you went to the cashier, the teller, with this check and you said, "I need to cash this because I'm selling a car." >> Correct? >> Okay. The teller was already aware that you were going to try to come here because they sent an email with your picture and the other guy's picture, so they knew exactly who you were cuz this check was already tried to be cashed at Patrick's Air Force Base. Rather than backing down, the suspect grows more defensive once the officers lay out what they found >> and was flag stop talking. When I'm done talking, you can talk or if I ask you a question. Fair. All right. So, when Patrick's flagged this, they sent it to all the other Navy federal branches and said, "This is a fraudulent check. There's no proof. There's no bill of sale, no title of the vehicle, no proof at all that this check is for the sale of a vehicle, which is what you're claiming it to be." Correct. Yes. >> Okay. So, without that proof, it is a fraudulent check because the vehicle is registered to somebody completely different who is currently driving the vehicle. >> I would have been fraud on my own >> because you're cashing a check that does not work for the sale of the vehicle. So, you showed up to a bank to cash a check for a vehicle that you're selling. Correct, >> sir. >> Yes or no? >> This is a loan. >> It's a yes or no question. >> Yes or no? I have not claimed, >> Mr. Cody. Yes or no? >> I have not claimed that I'm selling that vehicle. >> You showed up because you said this check is because I'm selling a vehicle to this other individual. Yes or no? >> Come out my mouth. >> Okay. Do you want me to play back my body camera or get the camera from the from the bank? Which one would you like? Cuz they both have you saying it? >> So, I have came out my mouth saying that I am selling a vehicle. I said I have an automan check. >> You said this check right here is for the sale of a vehicle. Yes or no? >> I said that is the auto loan check. It did not come out my mouth that I >> Okay. You understand English, right? >> Yes, sir. >> Okay. Do you have a mental malfunction I'm not aware about that you cannot understand my communication? >> I'm talking to you. >> No, no, it's it's yes or no. Do you have one that I'm not aware about? Yes or no. Okay. So, the questions I'm asking you are yes or no questions. They're pretty straightforward, right? They're so that I can get further in this investigation. So, you have been unable to answer my question. The check that you are trying to cash is for the sale or a transaction of a vehicle. Yes or no? Yes. Okay. So, because you have been unable to provide the proof that either you or this other individual have the title or bill of sale for the vehicle in this check is project. You understand? So, it's making me approximate because you understand. >> Next up is a defense so weak it practically confirms the officer's suspicions. >> You have no proof the vehicle is yours. So, how is it coming to fraud on on that end when >> the bank flagged it as fraud? >> It's a loan. It's literally a loan. I had I do not have to leave. It's a loan. No one's took anything. No one's stolen anything. It's a loan. And I was just told that the check was fraudulent because there was no loan or nothing. That check had to be given to Amirus. That check had to be given. >> So, you have no proof of the vehicle making the check fraudulent. You have >> I have not printed out that check. So, I have not done anything to that check. Your attempt to cash this check with the teller today is sufficient for the bank to press charges. Do you understand that? >> I have not done anything. >> Hey, I'm getting a loan in my >> Are you a 22 car? >> Yeah. >> Okay. I already called your supervisor. It's just going to be a transporter. >> Okay. >> So, please, sir. >> Sir, >> I I just need somebody to transport. So, most >> I haven't said one time I have the time. >> Do you want to put him in your car? >> Yeah. >> Um, do you want to swap cuts real quick? >> Yeah. >> Please, sir. >> Please, sir. Oh my god. >> Thank you. >> Please, sir. Would I be able to talk to the bank, sir? >> No, you're not going to be able to talk. and verified and now my my >> Yes, they have. >> They have called and verified that the check is fraudulent. You just did and the teller in front of me. >> I have not tried to cash. >> I was standing behind you now. I have not tried to cash. >> Exactly. That one attempt is all you need. >> You said the check is been cashed. >> Yes. The other person went to attempt to cash that same check at Patrick's Air Force Base. >> How would he try to cash the same check if there's only one check out? >> Not sure. You're going to have to ask him, man. This is crazy cuz the bank already flagged that check. >> What am I doing that's fraud? >> Hold on. You guys back out. >> What am I? What am I doing that spot, sir? >> I'm not understanding. What have I done that spot? >> Despite the mounting evidence, the suspect never backed down from claiming he did nothing wrong. >> I'm not understanding >> the check. The fact you attempted to cash the check. >> I haven't stolen a vehicle. >> Who said anything about stealing a car? >> I haven't taken a vehicle. I'm not cashing the project. >> It's making the check fraud. >> I explained that to you already multiple times. I'm I'm not sure how else I can explain it to you. >> So, because I don't have a title to the >> vehicle. Correct. >> You have no proof. >> So, what's he want? >> I don't know. For you to not send him to >> Yeah. >> He don't want to go to jail. >> Well, >> Jailitis. >> What I mean, do we have an actual charge? What is it? >> Just him trying to catch a [ __ ] type. >> Okay. Where's he at? >> He's in my car. Roll the window down. Which side is he? Passenger side. Driver's side. >> Hey, I'm Sergeant Anderson. You asked to speak to a supervisor. >> Yes, sir. >> What's going on? >> So, basically, they're telling me that I'm being charged with fraud with a duplicated check. >> Yes. >> And the check that is the only check that has been given to me. There has I have not gone anywhere else and tried to cash a check. A duplicated check. Okay. >> I haven't done anything. Sir, >> who uh who gave you the check? >> Americus. America's Johnston. >> Who's that? >> He is the person who got the auto loan. So, he has to get approved for the loan. He has to go into the bank and sign off on the loan. >> This check is fully verifiable. >> Who Who's America's Johnson to you? >> He's my friend. >> Why are you going to Is it the check in your name or his name? >> It's in my name. >> It's payable to me. So basically, >> he wrote you a check. >> No, he didn't write the check. He got it from the bank. So basically, you can get a auto loan from the bank and you can turn it into an individual seller auto loan. So basically, you don't even have to have the car. >> All right. So So he goes to a bank, gets a check made out to you from a bank. >> You got the loan from Navy Federal. You got to approve for the loan and they issue a check. So that right there, >> the suspect insisted that he was innocent until the very end. Despite that, he was charged with uttering a forge check. However, the state attorney's office declined to prosecute and the charge was later dismissed. Number one, man uses fake ID at the airport and accidentally reveals his whole web of scams. On March 15th, 2024, deputies responded to Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport after the TSA flagged a passenger for presenting a fake ID. What followed was a quick investigation on the ground. >> Deputy Kelly, I was just coming and talk to you about that uh incident with your ID. >> Mhm. >> I'm just trying to figure out what's going on with that. >> Okay. Uh I had gave it to my brother right here. >> Here, you can stay sitting for me. >> Okay. >> Yeah. Your brother's here. You can sit down. >> Mhm. >> Uh do you have your You gave your brother your ID? >> Yep. >> All right. Where's your brother at? He he >> all right. You don't have to go through any of this. What is What is your last name? You can sit down. >> Okay. >> All right. I've said multiple times. Stay seated. >> Yes. Hello. >> All right. What's your last name? >> My last name is P. >> What? >> Pain. >> P A Y N E. >> Y. >> All right. First name? >> Nicholas. >> N I C >> H O L S. >> O L >> S. >> A S. Or just S. >> Yep. S. >> O L S. Y. All right. Middle initial. Date of birth? >> 1994. 19 >> 94. And your ID is going to come out of Wisconsin? >> No. It's coming out of Tennessee. >> Tennessee. >> Yep. >> All right. >> So, you don't have your ID on you anymore? >> No. >> No. >> No. >> All right. >> So, we're going to bring you back there just uh get all your information, make sure it's correct. We'll carry this stuff for you. No, that didn't work. >> You face that way. Put these on the same >> What is What is I'm getting for >> just to see make sure your ID and everything lines up. So, face that way for me. >> I'm about to see my mom. Can I see my mom? >> Well, let use your phone after all this. this first. >> I I call my mom number. >> I don't know what's the name. >> What do you guys >> Though the suspect isn't resisting, the officers know the situation is serious. The TSA's verification system confirmed his ID was a fake. This is my bag. >> That's not your bag. >> This your bag. >> This is your brother. >> No, that's that's my cousin. >> This is my This is my ID. >> You give him your ID? >> No, I get I gave my brother my >> No, no, no. ID. >> We're just because you snagged an ID at a federal checkpoint. Right. >> Yeah. So, we're just going to confirm who you are and then >> I don't see how >> So, why why what happened? What was the issue with the idea? >> I I don't I'm trying to I told my late for my flight, so I got to fight this here. >> I can't even I'm getting I can't even be on my phone. >> Uh you will eventually here. We'll go this way. >> I don't understand. over time. >> That's not That's not my bag right there. >> Why were you carrying it then? You were at TSA. >> He said out of Tennessee. That's my brother bag. I told you that. He said it right there. >> Okay. But you But you had it when you were at TSA. >> No, I ain't have that bag. >> You never had that bag? >> Because that looks a lot to me like you having that bag? >> I didn't. I told you I hold it for my brother. I mean, but can I pull on my Can I pull on my pants, bro? It's right over here. >> While escorting the suspect, the officer takes a moment to confirm the man's personal details. >> That is your name? >> Yes. Out of Tennessee. Cuz otherwise, we're going to have to bring you downtown to get you identified. >> So, I'm saying, you know what I mean? It's easier if you just tell me. >> I just got you, my man. All right. Cool. Here, I'll pull him up. >> Where were you trying to fly to? Houston, >> this is right down here. You don't give me anymore. >> So why why do you give your ID to your to your brother? >> He said one idea. >> Like what was why do you give the ID to your brother? >> He said why? Cuz he cuz he asked for it. >> He asked you for your ID. >> For what? >> Yep. >> Like for what reason? >> He said he about to go to TSA and see why they want to let me check in. He hold my bag real quick. >> Gotcha. That was bad. [Music] 5 foot five. [Music] Um, have you sit right here, man? Can I Can I take off clothes? Do you want me to pull those up? >> I can't. But >> right here, I'm going to put your phone. >> At this point, the officer wants answers, and the suspect knows there's no dodging the officer's questions. >> So, what was that guy was? Who to you? The one that we saw in there. You say who? >> The guy that we saw in there when we were walking out. What is he to you? >> It's my cousin. I told you that. >> So, you went that ID that he presented his. >> He He said uh he gave it to his brother and his brother left that. >> Okay. >> So, I'm going to search you real quick, man. >> I don't what what is my probable cause of getting searched? >> You're in custody, sir. And to be honest, you're going to go to jail for misappropriation of ID and interfering with screening procedures. You can't present false. >> So, I'm going to have you stand out face this way. >> Oh, like I said, dude, it's easier if you just tell us your name. >> You know what I mean? I'm going to blast that way more. My name is Mar. >> All right. That's your real name? Y. >> All right. What is my problem? >> You're in custody. To be honest, you're going to go to jail for us. >> This is interesting. This is very interesting. >> Find the idea when it is. >> This is very interesting. >> Leave that for now. Can one of you guys take down his actual name? >> Callie. >> Yeah. >> Stand by. >> To make matters worse, he's already wanted in another state. Louisiana has an active warrant for his arrest, and a search of the suspect's belongings reveals 155 forged and stolen checks. And you can have a seat. >> Is this your ID, sir? Is that who you are? Yes, sir. >> You have a real ID in here or not? >> No, I don't. You want it for anything anywhere else? >> No. Hey, what's your cousin's name? >> Um, we're going to not do that right now. >> No. All right. >> Hold on. >> They're going to have to wait if it's not on merge and I'll call her back. I tried and it didn't answer. We're currently in the middle of another call. Yeah, >> give me one second. >> According to the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office, the stolen checks totaled over $243,000. Of that, the suspect reportedly managed to cash 13 checks, raking in nearly $92,000. In the end, the suspect was convicted of five serious charges, including fraud against a financial institution, identity theft, and laundering over $100,000. What do you think? Did they get what they deserved? Let me know in the comments, and I'll catch you in the next video.
