These scammers had a good run, but not good enough to fool the authorities forever. Here are five cases when cops expose serial scam artists in the act. Number five, woman tries acting innocent with a stolen vehicle. Doesn't go well. On May 10th, 2024, officers in Palm Beach County spotted a vehicle flagged as stolen. Without wasting any time, they initiated a traffic stop. uncertain of what they'd be walking into. Here's how the stop unfolded. >> Step out. Nothing in your hands. Nothing in your hands, right? Just Coke. Just leave that bottle down there. Step on over here. Anybody else in the vehicle? No. Okay. I'll explain to you what's going on. It comes back as a stolen car. >> Yeah. So, that's But that's what's going on. Okay. What's your name? Anastasia, right? >> Hm. >> Anastasia, right? >> Anastasia. Okay. You got your license or anything on you? >> No. >> Okay. Do me a favor. Just stay put right here. All right. >> Cooperative 198. >> Yep. Right on the curb, if you don't mind. >> Sorry. >> Oh, no, no, no. Whenever we deal with these things, we want to make sure cuz we don't know who's driving it. You know what I mean? We want to be safe rather than sorry. So, you know, >> I spot went ahead and pulled over. behind me and I was like, "Okay, just go and pull over for this guy." >> No, thank you. I appreciate that. >> You're very welcome. >> Do you have your license on you or is it in there? >> I don't have it on my person or in there at all. I haven't got a copy of it. >> Okay. >> At all. >> Okay. All right. >> I'm sorry. >> No, it's okay. >> My wallet was actually taken not much longer. >> Okay. I'm sorry to hear that. >> All right. >> Hey, sorry. >> So, this is Anastasia. Very cooperative. Um, she said she borrowed the car. Nothing legal here at all. >> No, absolutely not. I don't think I think there was a empty vodka bottle in there earlier, but I threw it out. I think >> not mine. I can blow. I do not drink it all. I don't drink anymore. It might be. I don't think so, though. There. Nope. There it is. No, it ain't. Pretty sure it's not. I think I threw it up and nope. She says her name is Anastasia and explains that her ID was taken along with her wallet. It's a potential red flag, but with no signs of aggression or dishonesty, the officers choose to proceed with the investigation, right? >> Yes. >> Hey, you did the smartest thing. I appreciate you being aware of your surroundings and and and you being nothing but cooperative. So, you have my kudos. Um not a lot of people, >> you know, unfortunately this is >> they see they try dodgy. >> Yeah. So I appreciate um you know what your your level of cooperation. >> I wouldn't notice you unless it's the first car. Like it didn't look like a cop car cuz our our SUVs are like those where I'm from. >> Where do you live? >> Uh in Georgia. >> In Georgia. What you doing down there? >> My cousin is here. >> Your cousin? >> Okay. Exactly. >> If it's not red, please. >> Why would they fill a car just to let someone borrow it? I don't understand that. >> It really didn't even charge. I mean, I did pay to borrow it, but I only paid like 70 bucks to borrow it. It was like a quick 70 bucks. I guess that's insane. It's a lot of hassle for $70. Do y'all mind if I stand up? >> These marks are so short and it hurt my butt. >> Just stay like over here. >> 12 days clean, y'all. >> Clean. >> So I was like, there's absolutely nothing in there cuz I've been clean for 12 days. >> Clean from what? >> Everything. Absolutely everything. >> Oh, you did everything? >> Yes. 12 days clean under my belt. That's like the most I've had in my entire life. So, I'm excited like I'm like pumped, >> you know. 12 days. 12 days. Like when I was little, my parents, they were so I used to um pull B out the microwave 5 years old, you know. So, 12 days is only 2% come back from the needle. They give her space to share her personal challenges, but officers keep circling back to the bigger issue. She's far from home, has no ID, and they're starting to question if the name she gave is even hers. >> Come back from that, >> and I'm not going to be a statistic. I refuse. I absolutely refuse to be a statistic. Will never happen. I finally had enough of it. Just walked away from it at Scotch Street. Didn't touch it. Threw everything away. Burned everything. >> Thank you. >> You have a license out of Georgia? >> Yes. What did I really know in there? >> I've been playing for 12 days. I know there probably was in it and loved it. No, I'm not good with numbers. I'm just like I'm sorry. I've never been able to remember any kind of number. It's like >> once you're at nine, >> I don't even know my left and right time. >> It's sad. I have no sense of direction. I've literally lived in the same town for 7 years and it took me 3 years to get to Walmart with without GPS. I I promise you Anastasia and she said she borrowed the vehicle from >> Red >> Red. I do you know the actual name? >> No, she just goes by Red >> down in West Palm. Where? >> Uh from uh Yeah, West. >> Tampa. Tampa. My bad. Tampa. Sorry, >> she's from Tampa. >> She said she's out of Georgia. >> The inconsistencies pile up quickly and so do her denials. She won't claim the vehicle and she won't acknowledge the illicit substances in her car. The woman's responses are leaving the officers with more questions than answers. >> All right. Um, >> sorry. >> Yeah. Red's my cousin Pam's friend. >> So, here's the thing. those those pills, right? >> Yeah, >> those pills. >> And >> we're not we're not trying to implicate you or anything like that, but we're not going to let you go with them with them pills and they don't even belong to you. I know I know you say they're your cousins. >> Oh, yes. I better know. >> You We're leaving and I'm not getting in trouble for stealing the car. I didn't steal. >> Here's what's going to happen. >> Take the pills. >> All right. Hear me out. Here's what's going to happen is we're going to take possession of those pills as as for safekeeping. Right. Sorry. >> I've been playing for 12 days and if I knew that was in there and I thought it was I would have smoked it and I'm glad I didn't >> I thought it was he stayed up on the thing and if I knew that was in there >> if it was No, I didn't see the colors of it. I just seen him sitting whenever he turned around backwards. >> What's your uh first name? >> Anastasia. An A. >> S T A S I A. >> How did you end up in Palm Beach County? >> I was in Tampa. That's not far. >> No, I went to Tampa from Sarasota to get the car from Red to go to River where my >> other Palm Beach. Where is Where is Palm Beach County on the map? >> Right here. >> No, I don't know where I'm at on the map. Like, I'm trying to think which way. >> East coast. >> S of the West Coast. You're on the complete opposite side of the state. >> The driver's license that comes out of Georgia looks nothing like you. What do you mean? The >> brown I got I got contact. >> Okay. >> So, what I'm lost >> I I don't know. >> I don't know. But what I'm I'm not trying to call you out or anything like that. >> Okay. But here's the thing is >> right now technically >> we can arrest you. >> They start connecting the dots out loud. The ID she gave doesn't resemble her and her travel timeline doesn't check out. She's cooperative, but at this point, they're done giving her the benefit of the doubt. >> Okay, if you're nervous about a suspended license, that's the least of my worries. What I'm worried about is making sure that you're not like a missing endangered person or something. So, what is your name? >> I'm going to tell you I'm going to tell you straight up. >> Yeah. >> What is your name? Because I only started last week, right? Come on now. Lowry back. >> Oh, no. Good. >> I really didn't steal the car, though. I swear. >> You have a warrant. >> I've already been three driving. I have a warrant. >> How do you spell Briana? B R I A N A N. You're man. >> I really didn't steal it though. >> Time. You're wasting all these officer time. >> I really didn't steal it though. I swear >> you could go to jail. Just lying to us. >> They tortured me in there. >> Where? What jail? >> I don't want to go back. >> Yeah. Anastasia, right? >> I know. That's not real. >> I just really don't want to go back to jail. I can't I can't >> look. Look at this resource that could be saving lives. Sorry. I don't know why 16. >> Holy cow. >> Literally, I do. I had three different jobs. I've had three different names. >> You're the most confusing person I've ever met. >> Stand up. >> Stand up. >> I mean, you can stay seated. That's fine. Put your hands behind your back. >> Stand up. >> Put your hands like you're praying. >> She's overwhelmed, but that doesn't change what's coming. She's played the game too long and now the truth is catching up. >> Stand up straight. >> You're putting strain on yourself by leaning forward like that. >> You're not going to not go to jail. So, nothing you say or do is going to get you out of it. Okay? So, let's just make it easy and get it over with. Okay? >> We're going to your car. >> Going to jail. >> I'll search your car. >> Come on. What are you charging me with? >> So, false name is one. >> What else? >> Well, false name's enough. So, >> in the end, the woman was charged with grand theft auto, fraud, and giving a false name to law enforcement. Number four, caught with a fake check, he scrambles for excuses, but none of them work. On August 29th, 2024, officers were called to a local bank where staff believed someone was in the middle of pulling off a fraud. And when police arrived, they didn't waste time laying out exactly what was going on. >> Yeah. >> Hey guys, what's going on today? >> Nothing much. >> Nothing much. Trying to catch a truck. You >> got your ID on you? There you go. They got it. What's your name? >> John. >> John, come here. John, fix it. John, >> you're being retained right now for what? >> Well, there might be an issue with the check. You're not ready to go right now. You understand? >> Okay. They have your ID. check. >> And how do you guys know it's fake? >> Because they he was in a bolo. We shared a check with everybody other than >> Yeah, you can come back if you're allowed to come back and see how bolo for the bolo. Can you buzz? >> How do I get biker? >> We share a boa with all the other branches in our market. Delta 44. >> Yes. Same flag today. >> Same delta 44. Same. >> I don't know. So tank offer, make sure you have any weapons on you on top of your head on a seat. The bank's staff gave officers enough to act on, so they detained the man while they verify who he is and gather more information. For now, he's in cuffs and headed for more questioning. >> That's 266 3518. Yes, sir. This might be fake. >> Yeah, cuz there's he got another name. >> Can you print that for me? >> Absolutely. continue on. You're not just ask any questions until I get this taken care of real. >> Put your palms together. Wait. All right. Have a seat. >> All right. So, what are we doing here today? >> Um, for the amount of what? >> 5,000 something. >> Okay. Who paid you that check or >> It was a job I did. >> For who? >> Uh, I can't remember exactly who that was for. >> So, somebody paid you five plus thousand and you don't remember who? >> It was Al Wesley Chapel. >> Okay. So, you did a job for somebody that paid you over $5,000 and you're telling me you did not remember? Who? >> I can't remember his name yet. >> Okay. Where are you from? >> Raleigh, North Carolina. What's your name? Full name. >> John Joseph Santoro. >> Joseph with a PH. >> Yep. >> What's your date of birth? >> The man insists that the $5,000 check is [music] legit and says it's payment for work he supposedly completed, but he can't name the person who hired him. And soon he's stumbling over simple details about his own identity. >> This is an easy question. My 5-year-old can give her a day to work. Why don't we Why don't we just give us your real name and birthday and we'll just solve the work. >> Just understand that if you provide false information, that's a charge. >> So, you want to rethink your information again? What's your full name? >> Brandon. I need your full name. >> Brandon. Yeah, >> pull your ID real quick. >> What a birthday gift. >> This just put in. >> All right, Brandon. So, >> came here to cash a check. Who gave you that check? >> Some guy stopped me on the streets, man. the streets of >> Tampa. >> Tampa. >> Yeah. >> And you came to this location because >> this is where he had me come. >> He told you to come to this location. So some random guy just give you a check and location and just follow through. >> Yeah. >> Don't know a name for the guy. >> I don't even know his real name, sir. >> Okay. How many times have you done this for him? >> Couple. >> Couple of time. Tampa or here? Tampa. >> Tampa mostly. >> Okay. Where'd you get that ID from? >> He He has it. >> He made it for you. >> I'm not sure. I'm not sure. I'm really not sure. >> Gotcha. So, he provides all the IDs, >> all the information, what bank to go to, here's a check, and you just follow through basically. Okay, >> at this point it's clear to the officers that the man isn't the mastermind. He's just the middleman in a larger scam likely used to cash a fake check. >> Um, how do you get in contact with him? >> He calls you. >> What's his number? >> You don't know? Nobody. >> Okay. So, it's in your phone. >> I don't know if it's right there. >> Gotcha. How'd you get here? >> They drove me over. >> They drove you? What car? >> It's a little white. I'm not sure what it is. White Honda. >> Two door. Four-door. >> Two door. >> Two door. New. Older. >> Oh, you hit that screen. >> I'm sorry. >> Okay. >> The new or older model? >> Newer. >> Newer. Okay. >> What is the agreement between you guys? >> How much do you get? [snorts] >> Brandon, you didn't mention, right? You got arrested. You didn't mention >> how you didn't let me finish. >> I said you said the last time I got arrested. >> The last time you were arrested, Rand >> like in 21 >> 2021. >> Yeah, something like that. >> So, what what's your percentage that you get from them? 18 >> 18 >> 10% of whatever you cash from. >> This is his wallet. >> Thank you. >> Thank you. >> Appreciate it. >> What does he look like? White, black, Hispanic, >> tall, short, fat, skinny, >> I guess. >> The officers try to dig for leads on who's really behind the check, but the suspect's vague answers are not enough to track anyone down. >> How old you think he is? >> Uh, 30 something. >> What's What do you know him as? What's his nickname? Whiskey 623 >> 425 >> four >> like number four >> that's all I know >> see I'm I'm homeless right now >> I understand >> so I'm just trying to make a little bit of money >> I understand I was actually getting ready to leave tomorrow where >> with my girlfriend up in Georgia >> yeah what kind of chart What? What kind of charge is this? >> I will tell you the moment I will tell you the moment I know. Okay. I don't want to say something now and then later something else and then you become upset with me. So, let me just get to that point and I'll be as clear as I can be as you being with me. So, I appreciate that. >> Yeah. I'm trying. I mean, I'm I'm working today, you know. >> Yeah. >> I'm just a bad spot, man. It's just way to make quick cash. They drive around. They're not the only ones. >> I understand. >> They drive around pick. >> But I also want to catch them. >> Homeless people. I mean, that's what they do. >> But that's why I'm asking all this info because I want to catch them, too. >> That's what they That's what they do. >> Pick up homeless people. >> Yeah. It was issued 2022 expiring. >> They say not expiring. >> Not expiring. It's not expiring. >> Well, she told me differently. >> It's permanent. >> It's permanent. It's >> a permanent injunction. >> So, I know you just got arrested for not too long ago. >> Just before they leave, the staff drops a final piece of information to the officers. The suspect also has a permanent injunction from another agency for similar fraud under a different alias. Um, >> I think he's at office [laughter] >> cuz Yeah, that was JR's. >> Kevin Clark. That's the other guy from earlier. >> Where did he where did he use that? >> So, this one was in South Tampa. So, we share the teams and they sent that over to us just to be on the lookout. >> Gotcha. So he was in South Tampa >> and that was the Kevin Clark. >> Yes. >> They put lights on. I can I can tell you. >> I'll go check. I'll go back over. >> If not, we can throw them up. See, >> thank you guys. I owe you one. >> By the end of the encounter, the man was charged with uttering a fraudulent check, possession of a false identification and fraud. Number three, when playing it cool doesn't work when you're caught in a lie. On March 21st, 2023, officers in Newton, Connecticut were dispatched to a local bank after reports of a man attempting to cash a check using a fake ID. Here's how the situation played out once they arrived. >> Hi there. >> Hello. >> Hi. Good. How are you? >> Good. >> Hi there. >> Hi. >> Trying to take some money out of the bank? >> Uh, no. Just getting a statement. >> You're just getting a statement? Yeah. >> Okay. Do you bank here? >> No. >> You don't bank here? Do you have your ID with you? >> Yeah. >> Where is that at? >> Do you have the uh >> Okay. >> Do you have a an office that we can sit and chat at? >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> For what? Where's the problem? >> Because there's a problem. They called us here with the account with yourself. >> My with my account. >> So, can you put your pen in your pocket for me? >> I put the pen down. >> Okay. Thank you. I appreciate that. >> What do we need to talk about? We're going to go talk in an office. >> For what? We can talk right here. >> So, no, you're being detained. >> Detained for what? >> Okay. >> What am I being detained for? >> What did I just tell you? >> Bank fraud. >> Bank fraud. >> Yes. >> Stay right there. Don't move. >> Oh my god. See, are you serious? >> Yeah. No, I do. I not look like I'm serious. >> I must have the wrong person. >> Do you have his ID with him right here? >> Yeah, right here. What's your name? >> It's on the ID. >> No. What's your name? >> It's on the ID. >> No, we don't play that game. >> It's on the ID. >> We don't play that game. >> Constitutional right. >> I don't care. What's your name? >> I have a constitutional right. >> We all do. >> That's right. >> And what's your name? >> If you if I committed a crime, >> then you're suspected right now of committing a crime and that's why I'm here. >> I didn't commit a crime. >> So, what's your name? >> Nothing. Nothing. >> What's your name? Do you have any other forms of ID? No, I don't. >> Do you have a bank account here? >> Yes, I do. >> You do? Yeah. >> Ma'am deceive a bank account here. >> Not that I am. >> Okay. Does he trying to cash a check? >> No. >> No. >> Is he trying to withdraw money? >> No, I'm not. >> What's that? >> No. You know what? I gave you an opportunity to speak. I'm speaking to her. >> All right. >> Right. So, you know what? I told you we would go sit somewhere and talk. You want to play the game? No, you can stand up right now. >> No, you're standing up right now. >> The bank's staff had already seen through the man's story, but he kept insisting that everything he presented was legitimate. It doesn't take long for him to realize no one in the room is buying it. >> Oh my god. >> He's trying to get statement. >> He's trying to get a statement. >> A statement >> from which account? His >> or someone else's? >> Someone else's account. Okay. >> No, my account. >> Your account? >> Yes. >> Okay. So, what's your name? >> Is not necessarily >> Yes, it is part of the investigation. >> It's part part of the investigation. What's your name? >> I didn't commit a crime. Okay. So, you understand lying to a law enforcement officer? >> I didn't commit a crime during the What's your name? >> Cuz I can guarantee your name is not this name on this ID card. >> How do you know that? >> Because I can guarantee it. What car did you drive to get here? >> None of your business. >> How did you get here? It's going to be >> No, it's none of your business. >> So, can you do me a favor? Can you print out those statements that he was asking for or give me some sort of information? >> I didn't receive a statement. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> I didn't I didn't give me a crime. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> I did not commit a crime. >> I did not commit a crime. >> You bank here? >> Yes, I do. >> You do bank here. >> I'm going to sit down, please. You can stand up for a second. You do bank here. >> Listen, I don't >> Do you bank here? >> No way. I'm sitting down. >> Then sit down in that chair right there. That's fine. >> I didn't commit a crime. So, this wrong. I didn't do it. >> So, he refuses to tell me his name. He's here to get somebody's statements. >> He This is the idea he possessed and gave to them. >> What happened? >> Won't tell me where he lives at. I didn't make a droid. >> Can you Ben, can you can you watch him for a second? >> Can I speak with >> While another officer talks to the suspect, the lead officer pulls aside another bank employee, hoping to get more clarity on how the man tried to cash the check before they arrived. >> I'm going to office. They're probably getting >> Oh, I know they are cuz I have I have a similar case. Yeah. So, >> and he just went to Wildwater branch in Ridgefield. >> Yeah. >> That's how we had much out of him. >> And that's why we were expecting that they were going to hate our branch. Okay. >> Brian Scopen is a local person. He lives in Meadows. >> So, we know how he looks. He's our Red Bull customer. >> And that's the statement. He's he's trying to get a statement. >> Yeah. So, Brian's co the post office notified us that his account was being sold online. So, we switched his account numbers and everything on Friday. >> Okay. And now they're [clears throat] here trying to get the information I need. >> I I've got a case. Same thing. Yeah. >> Um I have a warrant for them because I wasn't able to get them, but it's the same thing. And I know the earbuds, they're communicating. So >> yeah. And they're next door. >> They're next door. >> Drop him off at >> Did you see what kind of car? >> Um no, but he came from Newton car. He said that he's driving a Honda himself, but I'm pretty sure he got dropped off. Investigate whatever. got this for you. >> Are you almost here? >> Ben, turn that down. >> That's a statement and that's >> Can I have that, too? This is a photo from the previous branch. >> The evidence is piling up and with a similar complaint from another branch already on file. Officers suspect this isn't the man's first time pulling the same scheme. >> Did he get anything out of this? >> Um, he asked for the same but then left when he was questioned. Was the PD called on this? >> He was gone by the time they could do anything. >> But the PD was called though. PD local PD was supposed right now. He's communicating through earbuds and they believe the car may be over at New Town Care. >> Okay. >> So, see, um, so this is him from the Ridgefield branch. >> He left the cops getting there. >> He's presenting. He's presenting one of their customers who lives over at Gunnaw Meadows. >> Okay. >> Was had problems. They knew he was coming here. >> So, that's why they gave us been trying to get their bank statements and stuff like that. Okay. >> Ben has their his passport card. >> It's not him. >> ID fraudulent ID that he >> Oh, yeah. He's presenting a different name. He won't even tell me his name and address, but >> Okay. >> He is communicating with I similar case with somebody over in that parking lot. >> Okay. >> I don't know if you want to send somebody else over there. >> Yeah. Maybe I'll shoot over real quick. >> All right. You want to get enough for >> Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Cool. something right now that he's using >> his earbuds. >> Yeah. >> Oh, they're in right now. So, he's talking to them and getting information from them. >> Okay. >> So, guarantee he's probably from New York. The other guy, >> let's say took off already, but knowing that we're here. >> Um, they said maybe it may be a Hyundai. I don't know. But 45. >> Okay. >> So, >> yeah. Um, maybe if >> we can do that if you want to stick around and get whatever statements you need. >> Yeah, let him know. 45. I just worried about that came statement. >> Yeah. >> So, >> nobody no social security. >> Before heading out, officers complete a [music] quick search of the man, making sure he's not in possession of anything illegal. >> 45. >> Stand up. Stand up. >> What are we doing here? Hold on. >> What am I on the rest of >> Why am I on the >> fraudulent ID? Trying to obtain other people's bank account information. >> I I didn't receive nothing. >> Okay. Interfering with law enforce enforcement officer here. What did I interfere with? >> Okay. >> You got any weapons on here? >> I have no weapons. >> You got anything that's going to poke stick prod? No. >> No. All right. >> Park your feet for me. All right. >> Part your feet for me. Nice and wide. >> Yep. >> Like I said, you got nothing on you. It's going to poke sick or hurt me, right? >> Nothing. >> All right. I don't do >> Oh, that's fine. I just You can have a knife in your pocket. >> Wallet. >> Yeah. Yeah. >> Yep. Lollipop here. >> What's in this pocket? >> Earbuds. >> Earbuds and sunglasses come off. >> Yep. Hold on a second. What am I being arrested? >> I just told you. >> You repeat that again. >> Bank foot. How am I committing bank? >> You got the wrong person. >> What is this about? Take it easy, dude. >> I got to check you. >> Yeah, but take it easy. >> It's in your pocket. >> In my pocket. I'll take those. I'll take the earbuds. >> Earbuds got >> the earbuds. >> I can't hear you. >> All right. Do you have a hearing? >> Yes. >> Is that what they're for? >> Yes. Okay. >> Communicating with the people next door. >> All right. Yep. >> I'll be right back in to get a statement. >> Yep. Hey, Ben. Yep. >> Grab that for him. >> Yeah, I'm coming back in. >> Trash just outside. >> With no resistance or complications, the man [music] is escorted to the station for booking. >> Hold on. Hold on. I'll get the door. There you go. Walk right over here. down. All right. All right. So, the easiest way to get in here is to face out and then sit down. That way you don't hit your head or nothing. There you go. There you go. Swing your legs. Your hand. >> Good. Look at the glass for me. >> New Police Department. >> Up on. By the time the investigation wrapped up, the man was hit with charges for identity theft, forgery, attempted lararseny, and criminal impersonation. On September 8th, 2023, officers were dispatched to a Navy Federal Credit Union after staff reported someone attempting to cash a suspicious $23,000 check. Here's what unfolded when police arrived on the scene. >> You want to talk about what's going on right now? You want to ask some questions and all that? >> Yes. >> All right. >> Tell me what's going on cuz I don't know. >> Okay. >> Before I do that, I just got to read you this. Okay. >> I'm being arrested. At this point, you're detained >> and I can't talk to you about what's going on with at least. >> This is crazy. >> Right. If you want to talk to me about it, I gota I got to read your >> cuz I don't want to cheer this up cuz I don't know what's going on. Yeah. >> You have the right to remain silent. Do you understand? >> Yes, sir. >> Anything you say may be used against you in court. Do you understand? You have the right to talk to a lawyer before and during questioning. Do you understand? Yes, sir. >> If you cannot afford a lawyer and want one will be provided for you before questioning without charge. Do you understand? >> Yes, sir. Has anyone threatened you or promised you or anything to get you to talk to me? >> No. Okay. Can we talk about what's going on? >> Yes, we can. >> All right. So, what's the deal with the check? >> What do you mean? >> What's the deal with the check? >> Yeah, the check. The check that you're trying to deposit today that you got to verify. You're trying to make all these phone calls. >> What's wrong with the check? >> That's what I'm asking you. >> There's nothing wrong with the check. She didn't tell me there was nothing wrong with the check. She told me I had an error with my verification. >> Okay. >> And she told me to go. She told me to call her. I went outside. >> I called in front. I came back. They say want to speak to my manager to verify me. The only way to do that to change my passcode for my verification. >> Okay. >> You feel me? Cuz she said that they she said that somebody came in yesterday and they red flag me. >> I told her I said, "Ma'am, I will come inside back in the bank if you want me to and verify myself." >> And that's what I did. And as soon as I came asked her, "Do you have a manager?" Y'all came and put me in handcuffs. After getting a rundown of how the detainment unfolded, the officer starts asking pointed questions about the check, but the man's answers only raise more suspicion. >> Um, so you cash the check yesterday or no? >> No. No. >> Okay. >> I didn't cash no check. >> And where is the check that you cash or that you're trying to cash today from? Where's it from? >> You said what? >> The check that you're trying to deposit today or cash today? Where's it from? >> It's from a grant loan. >> A grant loan from what state? >> Texas. >> Texas. Okay. Uh, what's the grant loan for? Are you in school or something or >> I'm like, what the heck? >> I'm just trying to Is something wrong with the check or something? Like, >> I'm confused. That's why I'm looking at you like that. Like, I'm trying to figure out what's going cuz I was just talking to the clerk. She didn't tell me nothing about this. And now you were telling me about a check and all this stuff. And then she was telling me, "Oh, well, we could deposit. It's going to take 5 days." But I was like, "Why would you deposit a check if I can't even get if I have a red flag and I can't get a deposit? I can't get a debit card." So I she told her the only way you could do that if you can't verify you through us call the bank. So I went outside he was outside early. I went outside and I jumped in the car and I was on the phone with Navy Federal. Okay. >> And then they she told me she don't know why they couldn't verify me. Go back in the bank so they can speak to the manager. I came in. I asked for the manager and that was it. >> Which car is yours outside? >> H Which car is yours outside? >> Which car is mine? It's um it's a Charger. Well, it's not my car. It's my people's car. Do you drive yourself here or? >> No, my friend is in the car. >> Okay. Uh, how'd you get the check? Where'd you get the check from? >> They sent you in the mail. >> To which house? >> To the 20. The one on my ID. >> Okay. And where is that? You know your address? >> I don't know by heart or I'm not from I just moved. I'm not from Orlando. I can't really tell you the address by heart and stuff. >> How long you been living in Orlando? >> Probably like 2, three years. >> Two, three years. And you don't know your address? I just moved and stuff like I don't I don't know the address by heart. I can get you the ID if you need the ID and stuff. I don't I don't know nothing about no bad. I don't have no bad check. I have not done nothing wrong. >> Okay. >> I have not done nothing wrong. But I'm like >> eager to explain. The man offers more of his backstory, but the officer picks up on several inconsistencies that don't quite add up. >> Well, I want you to be truthful with me. >> I am being truthful. Why I come in here with a bad check? I've been coming here for years. I I never had a fraudulent problem with my Navy Federal. >> Okay. >> And the Navy Federal account that you have right now is under your name. >> Yes, sir. >> Okay. How long have you had that bank account? >> I had I've been with Navy Federal for like 5 years. >> That's always the same account number. >> Always. No, I had uh No, I had called in because I had a problem with a female that I was dealing with. She had my information stuff and so I cancelled those cards and I cancelled my online. So now like I got to a point where like usually if you call your your debit card they'll tell you press this or put your 16 digit code I got to a point where I say my name it go straight to the operator. That's the securityities I have. >> They go straight to where? >> To the operator. >> Okay. >> Like you couldn't you know you can't check my available balance or none of that cuz I went through a scam problem. >> Okay. >> Bless you. >> So now you got a new account number. >> Yes. I got a new account number. >> Okay. So what was she saying about verifying the check or verifying? >> She didn't say nothing about verify the check. said that was an issue with verification. What was the issue with verification? >> Issue cuz I had two debit cards. >> Okay. >> But what is what that had to do with anything? That's not nothing. >> I think she was saying that two debit cards went to >> a separate account to like a different account. I didn't >> cuz that part one of that old debit cards for that old account that I closed with my online account. >> Okay. >> So that's the same. It's the same check is the same account when it goes to the online. I closed that because a girl got my information. That's all that's should be all on report and documented. Okay. So, like I said, let me go back. Let me verify all the documents. Let me see everything that they have and then I'll come back and and then, you know, if I got something to follow up with, I'll follow up. >> When asked about the check, the man claims it's a grant loan from Texas. But as he stumbles through his explanation, it's clear he's not telling the truth >> right now. This is what you're telling me though, right? >> I'm telling you the truth. >> I just want to verify what you're telling me right now. >> The guy the it's a black guy that sits right here, bro. He I go to him all the time, bro. I never had no problem with nothing. You know what I'm saying? >> If it if you're good. >> I'm saying if it was a problem, she should have told me. But she told me I had a verification problem. >> Yeah. That's why >> a verification with the check. That was >> No, she did not tell me that. Like >> Yeah. Yeah. I'm telling you, it wasn't a verification with your debit card. It was a verification with the check. >> Why didn't she tell me that? >> Maybe they didn't want you to take off or something, man. I >> I could have just left. She gave me my ID. I walked right past you. I walked right back. >> How many How many deposits have you done within the last week into this account >> to this account? This is going to be like in this week. It's going to be my first deposit. >> First deposit. >> First deposit. I haven't touched the account in a while. I rarely touch my my Navy Federal account. >> Okay. >> I really took >> So there's deposits into this account. I review video. They're not going to be you. >> Videos of deposits >> of deposits. Yeah. Coming in and depositing checks. When I review those videos, are they going to be you from >> this weekend? >> This week? Let's just say last two weeks. >> No, nothing. Go ahead. Yeah. >> Well, this is just the only check, right? This the one check, >> bro. Bro, you can go. I have nothing to lie, bro. I work for Universal, bro. I have my my life on the line, bro. I'm not going to lie to you about no check. >> Well, that's why I'm going to go clarify what the deal is with the check. >> Please do that. And you will see that you might have not been >> and I'm going to see what's going on. And you were depositing the check into your account, right? >> Yes. >> Okay. Let me go verify that. All right. >> Thank you, bro. I don't cuz I don't >> Right. Now, [clears throat] I'm not saying you ain't going to jail, right? I'm saying you're just being detained. There's a lot of questions that need cuz I I have not done nothing wrong. You get what I'm saying? And I don't see I don't see if she told me if she said it was a problem with that, bro. I could have we could have situ situated that right then and there. You you had a manager come look at the check this and that, but lie to me and tell me we can't verify you because of your debit card. So if you can't verify me because of the two points of ID, okay, let me call Navy Federal and figure out what's the red flag. >> When I just called, that's when you put me hand. The suspect tells the officers they're free to search his things, but what they really want is to hear more about who he is and how this check came to be. >> They told me the red flag was because I came in and I had two debit cards and it did not work. >> Okay. >> If if you need a different verification, I have another ID and this is another ID right here. This is two verifications. >> All right. What you do for Universal? >> I'm a prop I'm property manager. >> Okay. Property manager of what like what are you property manager of? Basically like say like we get around like for the meetings they'll get us they'll give us the proper what they want to do if it wants to clean paint maintenance takes I'm the one that tells hey this crew y'all go do clean up this crew y do the maintenance on this or this little crew right here y'all go pay it >> okay cool all right let me see what's up with the documents in the check >> do bro you got ID it's in the car >> I thought it was in your wallet >> no my ID is in my car >> okay >> you can ask your question am I going to You're going to have to ask that to the the detective. >> So he's detective right now. >> Yes, sir. >> Yeah, bro. Just let me know so I can just call my people. Bro, >> I I deal with I deal with a lawyer with this. >> This is some racial profiling, bro. >> This is definitely some racial profiling. >> Like, how how y'all know if I didn't get scammed? Like, >> question. So, on this check, it says teacher retirement system of Texas. What what would you all disperse checks for? Is it for retirement accounts or >> retirement accounts? Um um if they were a teacher and they were getting a refund from their account or the 401 plan um even if they're like a beneficiary for a member as well, we would distribute out fun like that. >> Well, I I asked cuz he's telling me it's a grant check from schooling. Would you all disperse a check for that? >> A grant check? Um, no, we don't do grant. >> Yeah, he's telling me it's a grant check, but >> So, this is just like a retirement account and beneficiaries of that account. This isn't grant or no financial aid or anything like that. Correct. >> No, it's not financial aid or anything. It's just a 401k pension plan. >> Okay. >> Um, state government pension plan. Yes. >> Gotcha. >> According to the representative, their office only processes retirement related payments, typically for former teachers or their beneficiaries. They confirmed they don't issue grant checks or educational aid. And when given the check number and the exact amount of $23,185.92, there's no trace of it in their records. >> Um, and then if I give you a check number, is there any way you can look that up? >> Okay. And what is it in the amount of >> It's for $23,185.92. Okay, it says $23,183.92. >> $23,185.92. >> Okay, sorry about that. >> No, no worries. >> Let me go ahead and check this um to see if I can find anything. Do you mind if I just place you on a brief hold? >> No, no worries. >> Thank you so much for holding. So, um I did not find anything with that information. >> Okay. So, therefore, this check is is fraudulent then. Correct. It's fair to say. >> Um I I mean I I I don't want to give out official or anything like that. >> Yeah. Yeah, I get it. I mean >> on that maybe probably it's it's probably not legit if you don't have the warrant number and you don't have that check amount. >> It's probably not a real check, right? >> Yeah. Like I said, he's claiming it's a check from a grant, which we know it's not. It's from, you know, it's a 401 type account. It's a retirement account, not a grant account. >> Uh, okay. And then the warrant number doesn't come back in your system, which if you all sent out a check, you would at least have documentation of that and or at least the person's social, which you have neither of those. Correct. >> Correct. >> All right. Well, I appreciate it. I will follow up and get some official records from you all at a later time. Um, thank you very much for your help. Perfect. After stepping away for a few minutes, the officers returned to the room, ready [music] to give the suspect another chance to come clean. >> 99, please. >> All right. Ready to be truthful about the >> 33139. I know what's going on. You going to see me judge and take me to jail, bro. >> Okay. And it was a grant check. Were you in school? Can you tell me what school you were in? >> I don't I don't want to talk no more. I don't know what's going on. I'm just going to keep it like that. You feel me? My only purpose coming back here is to verify myself. I've been told to verify myself cuz two debit card. >> I came in here with this now. I got this and I have another ID and I want to speak to the manager. I've been here been coming for 5 years. No problems. No none of that. >> I'm not going to come here on no check, bro. >> Okay. Well, I'm telling you that the in your terms the check is >> Okay. from my I didn't know I didn't know that the check was and when she fed. Why did she tell me that? >> Okay. You told me the check is from a grant money from school. That check is from a 401 account for retirement. >> No reason why anybody would be sending you that check. Correct. >> So I don't Listen, I'm just telling you what I know. >> Okay. >> I didn't that's not no check that I made. This is not No, I'm not >> I'm not saying you made it. I know I have not did nothing wrong. >> I think the person who made it gave it to you to cash it for them and you were going to get some money. >> Cash it for who? get some money, bro. I make good money, >> okay? >> I make real good money, bro. I I'm a property man. You can call Universal. I get paid $25 an hour, >> okay? >> Like, bro, I'm not going to I can't Who is this person that you said that was in? Can I see them? See if I can recognize them and I can tell you who that person might be or something. >> Okay. >> You got any weap? >> No. Stand up. as well. >> What's that? >> I'm going to open up. >> Now that the officers have everything they need, they're ready to take the man to the cruiser and begin the trip to the station. >> Why you being so aggressive on me? >> I love being here. I got to get a locker real quick. Am I on arrest? >> Yes, sir. >> What's the charges? >> Uttering a forge check. Uh defraud financial institution. Grand theft. Possession kind of. Am I going to have a bomb? >> Yes, you will have a bomb. >> You tell me my bond is >> I don't know it off top my head. >> You taking me? >> I'll have to look it up. You want to start working on >> good? Okay. Have a seat right there. You know what? >> We're going to hold on to it because it's I got to look through it. Okay. >> That's fine. You're going to jail. We got to inventory everything before you get to jail. I have a seat right there for me. Just >> want to know what you got. What's What's here, man? >> Huh? >> What in here? >> There's nothing but herbs. There's nothing in there. You can smell and tell that there's nothing but smell good. >> Nothing's going to hurt me or anything like that. No crazy or anything. Just be honest with me. Um I just told you what it was. It's a herb. like to smell good. >> Yes. I just told you what it was. >> Do you know what what's the bond? >> I don't know the bond amount. Uh it's probably going to be somewhere around if I had to guess between 5 and 6,000. >> Um but that's a guess of 10%. >> That's you got to put 10% of that. So 500 or 600 bucks. >> That's all together. >> I'm guessing. >> You know what I mean? And if I keep guessing, you're going to get there and you going you're going to get mad at me cuz you're going to put say my numbers were off or this. I don't know. You know what I mean? >> I'm just ready to go. >> Yeah. I don't know. >> Have a seat, man. >> Won't be much longer. >> Um, we should be good to go. You're going to 40 for him. You talk to your supervisor. You going to 40 for him and they cool with that or? >> Yeah. Yeah. >> Okay. Okay. I just want to make sure. >> Leaving with you? >> No, sir. You'll be leaving with uh with him. >> All right. I have to hold. I'm not holding. >> Whatever fight he had left is gone. The suspect gives in and allows officers to complete the arrest without further resistance. >> Are you the first car? >> Yeah. Yep. >> What? on this side. On this side, guys, I think they're calling the >> Yep. Should be open right over here. >> Should search them, right? Should be good. >> You search them back. >> Yeah, I search them in there. Oh, yes. Yes. >> All right. I think I didn't check with like up in the top area. >> You got anything on you? >> I don't have nothing boss, man. I don't have nothing. >> I saw like a necklace or something. >> It's a It's a regular bead. >> It's like a bee necklace. Okay. I just want to make sure I just want to make sure there's nothing on it, man. >> I'm telling you there's nothing, bro. I'm already caught. >> They going to scan you at the jail. >> You take it into the jail. It's a charge. If we find it here, it's not. So, we just want to verify that there's nothing. >> Boy, can I do something right quick? Can I do something so they won't touch when we go to jail? >> What do you want to I want to take off my chain, but I don't want nobody else to touch it. >> Where's your chain? >> This is my chain. >> Okay. What do you want to do? >> I want to take it off. >> I don't want you to touch it. That's the whole point. >> You can't stay out of the handcuff. >> I can try to do it. I can I can try. >> How you going to try? Why can't Why can't I just take it off for you? >> I don't want you to touch it. All right. We'll take it off. >> Yeah, go take it off. You very make things a lot harder than what they need. Go ahead, boss man. >> Can you just sit backwards? Go ahead. >> Take it off. This is my grandmas. I have sentimental reason. >> We can take it off. >> Okay. Go ahead. Go ahead. >> Permission or they going to rip it off at the jail. >> Okay. Go ahead. >> You hold this for me. >> I'm trying to find it. I thought there was something. You take it off like that. >> Yeah, I can take it off. It's big enough. >> Just put my head on. >> Is it in one of these bags? >> Yeah. >> I want to keep that. >> All right. Stick this one right there. This one comes right. >> You're already trying to keep my cell phone. That's how I go to work and stuff. I can't I got to write a search warrant on yourself. >> Okay, but when I better get when I find out what I better get my phone back, I can't go to work. I have >> Listen, man. Listen, listen listen. >> I'm a property man. I have contract. You're going to get me another f. You're going to get me in jail again my job. >> Get another phone. That's the best. >> I cannot listen. I have >> You won't have it for some time. Watch your legs. By the end of the encounter, the suspect had a long list of charges, including defrauding a financial institution, uttering a forged check, possessing a counterfeit payment instrument, and grand theft. Number one, scammer thought fake confidence would fool officers. On April 20th, 2024, officers in West Palm Beach, Florida, responded to a call from an anonymous tipster who claimed a man was impersonating a security guard at a local shopping complex. Here's what happened when the police arrived. >> Okay, listen. Okay, I've explained this to you now numerous times. Okay, >> I'm going to tell you the truth. >> Okay, now you lied to me now three times. >> I did not lie cuz he never asked me if I had any firearms or nothing. >> Hey, listen. Is that is that that's a firearm, right? >> Yes, sir. >> Okay, so here's my thing and I and I know what happened. Okay, >> I I already know you. >> I I I have not met you a million times. >> No, I have not, sir. No, I have not. >> So, with that being said, okay, one, I I know you're not a security guard. I know you're a convicted felon. >> I work at a nightclub. >> Okay. I know you're a convicted feller. >> I work at a nightclub, sir. >> Okay, let me rephrase. Okay, I know you're a convicted felon. >> Okay, which means you can't be a security guard. Uh, yes you can. >> With as a convicted felon >> as long as you are a D license. >> But you can't have a gun. It's >> for my protection. >> You gave me now three fake names. >> No, I have not. >> Yes, sir. You told me that it was your twin. >> Okay. So, hold on. Right now, you're going to be detained. Okay. Until we determine what's going to happen here. >> Okay. >> So, we're going to take this gun belt off you. Do you have any other weapons on you? >> No, I do not. May I please talk to you cuz you you claim that you know me and I I don't know you at all. I never met you a day in my life. The name I told you, Washington, I know him, >> but I don't know you. I never met you. I never used to me all the time at 1229. >> I never been on 1229 North Dixie. Nothing. I used to go to Burger King Street. >> I've been across at 129 North Dixie. There's the Marathon gas station. You used to hang out there, the Spanish all night long. >> No, he's not Spanish. He's Hawaiian. Hawaiian. >> See, then you know him. So you know exactly 129. I never been over there. I never I never really hanged out over there. >> Should I ask you a question? Um, sir, >> go for it. >> Why are you harassing me? >> Why? Because listen, >> I went I went across to the bank with two deposits. >> There's nothing about harassing. >> I know. Hey, hold on. Can Can you stop >> over here? You're staying over here. You're a little too >> He's tested their patience long enough. Now, with his refusal to cooperate, the officers are done playing nice. >> Listen, can you stop yanking me? You need to shut up right now and listen to his line of questioning. If I have to pull you 5T in this direction, that's what I'll do. Turn. I'm not yanking you. It's all on camera. >> He was yanking you. >> NO, I'M NOT. You're detained and I'm pulling you this way. Now, listen. Shut up and listen. >> Sir, listen. I have. Okay. I know. I know who you are. I have not. >> I know. Okay. This is my >> You might not remember you. >> Okay. You might not remember, but I can promise you I know who you are, which we've confirmed that now with the Hawaiian Spanish food. Okay. So, this is what's going to happen. Okay. Um, I'm going to run your name. I'm pretty 100% sure you're convicted. Okay. I think you know you're convicted because you've been charged with firearm with felon and possession of a firearm. Okay. Along with anti-ado, burglaries, um, you're impersonating a security guard. >> Now, if I'm worked at a nightclub, >> doesn't matter. You're impersonating. You don't have their credentials. >> They never asked me for that when I don't have their credentials. >> They never asked me that when I when I went to the internet. definitely don't have the credentials, okay, to be carrying a firearm with a holster and a gun belt, which I know you put that gun belt on when you saw us the gun in your pocket when you saw us. Okay, so with that being said, with that being said, as of right now, you are being detained. I am going to ensure that you are not a felon. You cannot provide me any kind of G license with me. You're a security guard if I can carry a firearm. If not, you're not allowed to wear a security guard security guard sheriff while in possession of a firearm. You understand? >> Yes, sir. I work I work out in club. Is anybody can call my girlfriend? I don't know what's going on because I got me and my girlfriend been fighting. >> Turn around. Widen your stance. Wide your stance like this. >> My stance is wide. >> Thank you. >> Can I can Can I Can I please call my girlfriend or can you follow her for me, please? Come. We'll get that worked out in a little while. Before moving forward, the officers searched the man's pockets thoroughly. And this time, the lead officer makes it clear the game is over. Widen your stance. yours. Cuz my >> Can I ask you a question? >> Put your feet in. >> May I ask you a question, sir? >> Put your feet in. >> Thank you. >> You say you know me, but why you treating me like >> I'm not treating you. I'm giving you the opportunity to call your girlfriend in a little bit. >> But you treating me like >> I haven't said anything to you sir this entire way here. >> I'm right back. Just shut the hatch. >> Like I haven't did anything wrong. You treating me like Man. >> You say you know me. But >> I do know you, sir. You're a convicted felon. >> But I haven't been doing anything wrong. I've been doing good. >> Right. But that still doesn't mean you don't have to follow the law. You're a convicted felon. You can't have firearms or >> But I work for >> this. >> I work at a nightclub. They don't have those types of regulations inside a nightclub as a bouncer. >> You never You never did bouncing work at any nightclub. So you won't know. I have. >> Okay. But you're not allowed to wear a security shirt, sir. >> At a nightclub? Yes, you can. But you doing security at a nightclub? Inside of the nightclub? Do you have your license, sir? in inside the nightclub. They don't ask you for a license. >> But you have to have a license if you're going to wear a security outfit. >> Not inside of a nightclub. >> You're not inside a nightclub. >> The man claims he works as a security guard at a nearby bar, but with his criminal history already confirmed. Officers find that hard to believe. Even if he won't admit the lie, they urge him to start cooperating. And so far, it's not going well. I worked at many of them. It's called Ricky. >> What's your supervisor? >> I just started last night. >> So, you should know your supervisor's name, right? >> I haven't met my supervisor. I I went in. >> You got hired without meeting your supervisor? >> I It was a female. >> Who hired you? >> A female. >> I got to get the bulletproof vest off. You see that or I cut it off? >> Which do you prefer? Huh? >> Are you going to fight us or you you want me to cut it off? >> Do what you want to do, man. >> You got pair of shoes. I'll cut it off. >> You ain't cut off me cuz I I'm not the one. I not I didn't answer. >> Well, I turned around for a reason. >> You should know if somebody turned around, you know, I'm not I'm not fighting you. >> But you've already threatened to fight us. No. But you only got to put your hands on me tight. >> Yeah, call him. >> Call Washington. Call whoever. >> Why are you dragging me, man? >> Why are you dragging me, dude? >> I I asked you to not call my girlfriend. Look how he's doing me, man. >> Look how you throw me, dude. Like, come on, man. >> No, I want to get a supervisor. >> What is he? >> Yeah, we're going to take a pistol. >> Okay. >> What is your problem, dude? >> Okay, listen. Here, let's go inside. >> All right. >> We're either taking the vest off or we're cutting the vest off. >> What is y'all? I'm trying to behave it and look what y'all doing, man. >> Y [ __ ] trying to hand it on camera. >> Y'all manhandling me for what? >> Stop moving. >> They've had to strap him down just to keep control. And the officer gives him a final warning. Stop fighting for things will only get worse. I'm not doing anything, man. Stop moving. >> Listen to me real closely. All right. You show any signs of resistance when the >> I'm not. >> Listen to me real closely. >> Y'all hurting my arm and I'm not even doing nothing. >> What you're doing, pulling away from us, walking away from us. That's all. I was not. >> Shut up and listen. >> Y'ALL HURTING MY ARM. >> You're going to get tased if you continue to act the way that you do when the cuffs come off. When the cuffs come off, your hand goes on the wall and nowhere else. Do you understand? >> Let me put my hands on the wall. That's what you said, right? Let me put my hand on the wall. That's what you said, right? I'm not fighting y'all. Why? Why is y'all being >> Stop moving around. >> Face the wall. >> Face the wall. Lose your arm. Loosen your arm. >> My arm is loose. >> Loosen it up. >> Y'ALL GOT IT TIGHT. >> Pull your arm out slowly. >> Let me take it off with the proper one.
