These folks thought they'd found the perfect way to slip past security, but it only took one wrong move for everything to fall apart. Here are five cases when people got caught stealing. Number five, shoplifter thought playing dumb would help her. It didn't. On January 4th, 2025, officers responded to a Walmart after reports came in about a shopper allegedly misusing the selfch checkckout, concealing items, and not paying for everything in her cart. Officers responded quickly to see what was really going on. >> Hello. All right. So, what is going on? >> All this was not scared. >> Okay. All right. Could you when you get a sec? I know you guys are busy. Can you get the CCTV? >> Yeah. >> Oh, okay. Cool. All right, ma'am. Hello. I'm Officer Foster at the Washington Police Department. To start, I'm going to read you your Miranda rights. Okay. So, before I ask you any questions, it is my duty to advise you of your rights. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can be used against you in court or in other proceedings. You have the right to a lawyer for advice before we ask you any questions and to have him present during questioning. If you cannot afford a lawyer, one will be appointed for you free of any cost to you before any questioning if you wish. Do you understand those? >> Okay. All right. So, >> so if you look me up, I ain't never had nothing like this. So, some stuff just didn't scan or something. >> I got you. >> I literally scan this stuff. Just And I probably shouldn't do scanning stuff, but I ain't never been in hotel. Look me up. >> I got So, you were just shopping and then >> like I ain't change a tag. I ain't put nothing in my pocket. I ain't do none of that. Like, that's why you don't see like a lot of stuff, whatever. But it I did have a good amount of stuff where I went through the U scan and I should have just went through the, you know, the regular line trying to put the stuff, you know, doing it myself, stuff like that, but nothing intentional. >> I gota So, when you say you scan, is that like a self >> self scan thing? Okay, I got you. >> Okay, I got you. Let me I'm going to view that if you want to hang out with this officer. >> I haven't gotten her name or anything yet, just to let you know. >> She says a bunch of stuff up on the side. >> Mhm. when she grabs the hand scanner. I initially saw like this never got scanned. >> I gota cuz they can use the >> Yeah, the hand scanner. So if you watch it, she just put it up there and she'll never go to bed. >> I already read her Miranda. >> So it looks like most of the stuff that wasn't link >> and then she'd never scan this pants. She just put it. >> Okay. >> Thank you. I'll send you a link here in a little bit. I appreciate it. Her excuse is inexperience with the selfch checkckout lane, but when officers show her the footage, that explanation starts to fall apart. >> You gotten everything you guys need to as far as >> Yeah, they went through >> items and all that. >> Yeah. >> Okay. All right, ma'am. So, did you watch any of that while he was playing? >> That's why I said you see you don't see me intentionally. That's why I said everything up there. I just >> Yep. We're not saying you intentionally did it. I'm not saying accidents happen. We're all human, right? So, but as I just witnessed, if you watched it too, I'm sure you observed it as well. You're sc let's say I'm scanning these three. It looks like you're boom and then going quick and boom. So, you're missing them. So, >> did you come here with any intentions of not fully paying for something or >> if you check my I could show you my link card. Like my link card has literally like $900 on it. >> So, it was like I was blessed to have, you know, got my link and everything like that. If you look me up, I ain't never did nothing like this. Like I told him, it should I should have just literally went through the full thing or the >> thing instead of the you scan. I'm putting everything on there and just But like I was watch If you watch too, you don't see me like being sneaky if you if that makes sense. >> No, the only the only reason I'm bringing that up is cuz we're here almost daily. >> Oh, okay. >> So, we do hear a lot of the same. >> I live out here so I'm not coming out here to steal. This is my Walmart. >> I gotcha. We just hear the same things over and over to where, you know, hey, I'm sorry. I may have scanned these four, but I didn't scan these five. Something like that. Um, so as I saw, you did you missed items and then proceeded to leave the store, which people I think a lot of people think stealing is the instant you leave the front doors, it's stealing, but it's technically the last point of sale, >> which if I remember correctly, it's right after the registers. So, at that point, if it's not scanning, you're walking out with it. >> Well, I wouldn't know. I ain't never stole the mail. >> I gota [laughter] I gota It is still stealing at this point. So, I'm going to wait till he gets back with the training receipt and we'll go from there. >> I wanted to get this like I said I had >> Well, it's we're kind of at that point where it's like you didn't pay for it and then they bring you in here and then you want to pay for it now. I don't I think we're kind of past that. >> She's given a final opportunity to speak up and this time she tries to explain what happened from her point of view. >> You scared me when you walked up. I said, "No, I see too much Tik Tok. What happened? What happened? >> That's all I watch is. >> Nothing's going to get crazy in here. We just got to I got to wait till he gets that receipt and then >> Do you have anything on you that would be like worrisome for us? Do you mind if she searches you or I can? I don't want to make you do everything. >> No, you just want to set that stuff down. >> Do you mind if I go through your purse? >> I'll have you turn around and then use the wall there. Go ahead. They'll be surprised when we take Put on your >> No, you're not. We're not here. And then you don't think that you have anything on you. I know that. >> Thank you. I appreciate it. >> Oh, okay. >> Walmart. >> All right. Do you just want this back right here? And then I'm sorry. I >> Yeah, but I forgot to put a few things back, but I'm going to get them to you here. Sorry. All right. Okay. So, going back to the video, um, what would you call that as far as what we both witnessed and then the events that led up to this point? >> I would say it was Russian. >> Russian. >> Yeah. Cuz you got I honestly didn't know I didn't scan everything, but if you see, I didn't do like one thing like, let me just do this and do that. As watching it, I'm putting everything on the thing and then, you know, going scanning, scanning, scanning, putting the stuff in the bag. >> Mhm. Like I didn't I've never ever in life took anything. >> I gota why would why would we end up in here if it was rushing? >> Because I obviously rushed and didn't scan some stuff. I didn't intentionally not scan nothing. >> I gotcha. >> Despite her explanation, the video leaves no room for doubt. And now the officers let her know what comes next. >> Intention either way, it plays a little factor, but at the end of the day, if the act's committed, the acts committed, right? So that is retail theft. as I witnessed, as they told me that is the offense. Okay. So, what I'm going to do is I'm going to go back to my car if you want to hang out with her. I got to do some paperwork. I'll be back. >> Okay. >> So, if you want to hang out in here, let me actually I just got to grab a picture of that. So, you're good. If you just want to hang out with this officer, um, give me a few minutes. I'll be back. Okay. I can get it. >> Are you sure? >> Yeah. Thank you, though. 11. >> Hello. >> Give me a couple minutes. I'll be back in here. Okay. >> There's back. I snagged that. Is it 101 or 308? I always forget which room it is. >> Mirror. >> 101. >> Okay. Thank you. >> Oh, did you? Cool. Thank you. >> Yeah. >> Yep. We're good there. And then I got the little of what was taken that little receipt, the trading receipt. So, we're good there. So, we'll be up. >> All right, ma'am. So, I'm going to give you this. So, you are being charged with retail theft. Okay. >> What does that mean? So, you're going to have to go to court. >> Yep. You got to go to court on February 3rd, 2025, 9:00 a.m. in Pein. Do you know where the Tazible County Courthouse is? >> You do or you don't. Okay. So, it's in Pein. If you Google it, Tasel County Courthouse, you should be able to find that address pretty easily. >> I want to say it's off street. >> Other than that, does that make sense as far as the court date? >> Yeah. Do you have any questions regarding that or anything else? That's pretty close to it. Yes, that's the circuit clerk, but it's going to be right next to the courthouse, I would imagine. >> The case is nearly closed, but not before the officers offer some advice in hope she doesn't end up in this position again. >> Do you have any questions for me or anybody else or anything like that? Okay. Other than that, are you guys done speaking with her? >> Okay. Other than that, you guys are free. You're free to go. Okay. >> Okay. Thank you, guys. >> Yep. Just important goes that court date everything you have been saying. >> Yep. Whatever you told them just stay in court. So >> So Walmart will be there or something to tell who >> what's that? >> He'll be talking to the judge. Just >> the I met the judge. Yeah. >> Um but other than that you're free to go. So >> she is her receipt. >> There you are. All right. Have a better day, ma'am. >> In the end, the suspect was charged with retail theft. Number [music] four, shoplifter act shocked at her own arrest. On January 27th, 2025, officers responded to a dispatch from a local Target. The staff reported that they caught a woman in the act of shoplifting. Here's what happened when the officers arrived at the store and the suspect immediately put on a testy attitude. It was a high amount. Okay. >> It wasn't my fault. >> You just said you weren't calling the cops. >> Yeah. >> You said that three different alerted them. So, but you have to sign right here. >> I'm not signing a blank piece of paper. >> All right. Well, I mean, you still got to deal with them. >> Yeah, clearly. >> Like, thanks for lying to me, dude. >> Do you have your ID or driver's license? >> No, I just gave him the information I had. I don't have an ID. I'm trying to catch a bus. I'm homeless. Like, this is crazy. I didn't know that he promised he wasn't calling the cops, but >> I wasn't stealing just to steal, sir. >> But you were stealing, right? >> What's your last name? >> 341. >> What's your first name? >> You say Lisa. Teresa. >> Spell it. T. >> Teresa, do you have a middle name? >> Am I going to jail right now? >> I don't know. >> Are you guys arresting her? >> I don't know. >> What do you mean you don't How do you not know? >> Cuz I don't know what happened yet. I haven't talked to them. I'm just asking you for your information. >> I just want to know if I'm going to jail. >> Yeah, I know you're in a huge rush. >> I'm in a rush. >> I don't know if you're going to jail. I haven't talked to him yet. >> Okay. >> Have you heard me talk to anybody but you since I walked in here? So, slow down. >> Okay. >> You're not going anywhere till we're done. Yeah. Clearly. >> Clearly. >> Uh what's going on? Basically, she was shot coming in, had a huge bag. She started putting merchandise in her bag as she was walking the floor, found her bag, and after that, she came up to the front, passed all the check lanes, went downstairs without paying for it, and that's when we brought her. >> 664. >> What do you guys want? Do you want to arrest it? After hearing the store's decision of wanting to arrest her, the suspect becomes more impatient and even emotional. >> The bag around your bag. Okay. >> Okay. I will go to napkin. Can I sit this out? >> Huh? >> We'll explain everything later where you trespass them or you have like internal documents. We tell you right now you do. >> Yeah. Because in DuPage County, Bob Berlin attorney out there, they have people that have been trespass and then they >> commit to the station. >> Might as well try to start doing that. So I was so that just let >> 342 female 95. >> Can we have the female meet us at the station? for Saturday. I know he was a repeated upend day. >> That's how you like >> let our guys know. >> Gotcha. Because like I told him, I just scream burglary. They're not going to get shot. >> Can I put my phone in my Can you put my phone in my bag, please? >> In your bag? >> Yeah. >> I just >> Oh my god. >> I want my bag and my purse. >> Get something, too. >> Nothing illegal in there, right? That we have to worry about, >> cuz we're going to search. Yeah. >> You have anything on your person? There's a female officer that searches you and lock up. >> What' you say? >> Real quick. >> Oh my god. >> Wasn't there? >> Oh, that was one of the teams. >> Oh, do you guys have a >> Can I throw this away? >> Yeah, it's a female working. Not at the moment. No. Never mind. >> As the officers escort the suspect out of the store, the suspect finally lets loose and airs out her grievances towards the whole situation. >> I already >> No, I was going to have them. >> Oh, I think one of you guys, right? >> This officer right here. >> Okay. >> Just make it easier to have her. >> I didn't know they could. Oh, >> I'm not signing that piece of paper cuz there's nothing on that piece of paper. >> Okay, >> so got like how that license. >> Okay, >> she lied to me obviously. Not that it matters. I did something wrong. You know what I mean? Like I get it. But that's not how it's played out. You let Wilson know just to check the videos cuz they see eyed mine last time because I didn't see it at first the video. >> All right, I'm going to be this car over to the right. I'm going to just check your pockets before I put you in just make sure. >> Lots of things in >> Huh? >> I thought there was lots of things in there. >> What was your name? >> Teresa. >> Teresa, what's in your pockets? Just so >> homeless then. So >> all that's coming out just so you know. >> Well, if you're homeless, how come you're not stealing food? I just >> Oh man, you have no idea. Food. Um you need to steal some lava. >> I know. I know. I know. >> Stand right here for me. >> Hang on. >> Hold on to her. >> Yep. >> I'm just joking. >> Yeah, it's a good time to joke. >> I know. I know. Happens all the time. >> I know. Crap. Got nothing on you that's going to stab. >> How come you guys took your uh names off? No, I don't think so. >> No, you don't think so? >> I don't think so. >> Usually I would know what >> Oh, I got a knife. I do have a knife on me. That's on my fanny pack, though. That's not going to stab you. >> Where's Where's your fanny pack? >> Uh, needles. No. >> The officers are close to putting an end to this case and calling it a night. But before that happens, the suspect suddenly points her frustration towards the officers. >> Oh, please don't pop that 96 home. >> You don't take off the uh target card in there. >> Did you see if I have a Target gift card? I know the irony of it all. Where's your fanny pack at? >> It's inside my jacket. >> You mind if I check it just to grab the knife? >> That's all right. >> Knife's inside by my crotch >> here. It unbuckles. I'm going to unbuckle it. >> Sure does. I don't know what's in there either. >> All right. Well, I'll check before we go in. You got anything else crazy on you or no? >> No. >> The back of your hand. >> Oh my god. Are you still new? >> Huh? >> Are you still new? >> I don't check females. >> All right. >> Another house, right? Cuz we're going to have a female search. That's fine. >> Oh my god, that was so rude. fall spot or something. >> Yeah, hold on. I don't know what you like. >> After the incident, the suspect was charged with retail theft. Number three, shoplifting was her first mistake. [music] Her second was even dumber. On May 25th, 2024, officers were dispatched to a local Kroger after reports came in about a woman caught shoplifting. Here's what happened when they arrived to confront her. Uh, I got plenty of chocolate. >> Me? I'm so sorry. I'm sorry. >> Business. Okay. So, here's what's going on tonight. Right now, you're just going to be detained. >> So, I'm going to make sure you are who you say you are. Okay. Until I can verify that, you're not free to leave. Do you understand? >> I understand that. Yes. >> Okay. Do you have anything on you that can? >> Absolutely not. Do >> you have any uh any other stolen merchandise on you at this point? >> No, I don't. No, I don't. >> Is that okay if I search everything then real quick? >> Of course. Of course. What do you What do you need? All right. >> Say your stuff down. >> Real quick. I'm going to get on the computer and figure out who she is. >> Um, my name may be hyphenated. >> Okay. Um, it it may be um hyphen. H O. >> H O G U. >> Yes. >> You said, Texas. >> Yes. So, >> you got nothing in Illinois? >> No. No. I don't have a license here now. >> How long have you been up there? Um, I've been here for about a year and a half, two years, something like that. But I don't have a license here. >> Okay. Give me a money. >> So, what do you need some more? >> Down this way. Ma'am, >> do you pay for all this stuff? >> Yeah. No, that's just stuff that I had. Um, I'm moving. I'm going to the center of um the prevention of abuse >> and all of my stuff that I was >> like I've been slowly moving it to. >> Oh, perfect. >> There. Oh, there's mine. >> All right. Here you go. Let me see it. >> And my alcohol isn't. And um I also have I have cigarettes and stuff in there. I don't have anything in here that's perfect. Don't take too long while we're talking. >> I'm sorry. Like I just got it from a friend of mine's house like and I'm I'm not even done yet. >> You got a bottle of Makers Mark from a friend? >> Well, yeah. No, I've I've had that. What starts as a routine check of her items quickly turns confrontational with the suspect snapping at store employees and one of the officers like that. I just needed earbuds. That's all I needed. That's for those are for my kids. That's four of them. And I just >> You paid for these, too? >> I paid for those. >> You guys don't sell any of those, do you? >> No. >> You don't They don't sell any of this? >> No, they don't. >> I'm not asking you. I'm asking them. I'm sorry. They just don't. So when you shoplift, it's kind of hard for everybody to believe you. >> Is that all this is? I can scan it. >> None of this yours. I promise you it's not yours. >> You also promised me that you were coming in here honest when you came in. So I'm going to scan it to make sure. >> Going to find it hard to believe you paid for all this. All of it's brand new. >> Go ahead. Go ahead. I don't I know that I didn't steal it from this place. I didn't steal it from any place. >> You didn't steal from this place? Probably. >> No, I didn't steal from >> I don't believe you because >> I don't believe me. Anybody that's having issues with money that they're stealing this stuff like social security number >> tattoos obviously our tattoos >> I've got what >> I need to come out come back off my face >> like none of this stuff >> came from here except what I paid for and what I tried to steal which was those headbutts and the only reason why I tried to steal the headbuds is because every time I go off the bus today, they told me that I needed to have earbuds in and so I apologize for that. >> Well, the good news is is all this stuff I only carry three on the shelf at a time. Can you go over to aisle 12, left side? There should be three on that. >> Usually somebody that just steals one thing has been stealing for >> I do I get what you're saying to me. I understand that. But I wasn't even in here at all long enough like to do anything. I've been watching you before, but I understand that I'm telling you like I just >> The exchange between the officer and the suspect drags on until the officer brings up one key detail that shifts the conversation entirely. >> Why don't you carry an ID with you? >> Um, I lost it. >> You lost it recently? Um I like I said my if my phone was um cards I could show you my ID. I could tell you everything on it. >> Oh, so you can tell us your social security number? >> Yes, >> absolutely. I can tell you everything. >> What' you say? >> Where else did you steal from? >> I didn't steal from anywhere. >> Well, how'd you purchase it? I didn't see any money in here. This is not This is I went over to my friend's house today and I got my thing part of my things. Part of my things. I'm at the prevention um of of abuse. The prevention. >> So, let me just tell you something. We're not stupid. So, don't act like you are. I know you didn't I didn't I know you didn't pay for this. You're stealing a pair of headphones from here that were $10. >> I understand that. But all I was doing was I went there. I went there and got my things and then I came here. >> And you've been hitting stores on your way. No one comes here to steal one thing and has a whole bunch of brand new stuff in their bag. >> I'm just right there. across the away. Like that's that's the only reason why I came in here. >> I'm just right there at the conventional life. >> I got you. >> Do you though? >> Yeah. I would send you to jail to be honest cuz you have no money in way of paying for any of this. I don't see any cash. >> No. No. I don't have any cash. No. >> So, it's funny that you have a whole bunch of brand new, even a bottle of liquor that your friend just is like, "Hey, take all this." >> No, it's not. >> This was my Is it? >> Yeah. Like, I just got out of out of a really up relationship. Yes, it's my >> Well, >> like my phone is dead. >> When you get out of a relationship, you should not >> come to other stores and commit crimes cuz you committed a crime, >> right? >> So, there's no excuse for that. >> My phone's completely dead. >> Perfect. I got a charger for it. You said your ID right here. >> As the investigation continues, the tension between both parties only escalates, but the officers soon stumble upon something that blows the suspect's credibility wide open. >> My my charge right here. >> You said your ID's on it. >> My ID's on it. Why are you You can't take my phone out. >> Oh, you're going to show us your ID. >> Okay. Well, I need to plug it in somewhere. It's cuz it's dead. >> That's ours. >> That's not going I didn't get that from here. >> Oh, they said you did. >> I absolutely not. >> A whole bunch of stolen stuff that you >> So, do you have a receipt for it? >> The what? My nail polish. >> Do you have any receipt for all the brand new stuff in your bag? >> No, I don't have a receipt for it because I didn't get it from here. I didn't get it from anywhere. I got it from my friend's house. I've had that >> friend's house. So we can go by and ask her. >> You want to go by and ask her? So you want me to Let me go. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Here. What are we doing? I'm sorry. You don't have to >> Put your hands back. >> Why? Why? >> Figure everything out. >> I'm not being Am I being ugly? Ow. You're hurt. Don't hurt me, please. I'm What am I doing wrong? >> Well, you committed a crime. So, there's one. >> Two is I'm betting your name's not coming back, >> which is probably a pretty good We're going to talk about the name. Okay. >> Ashley. got nothing on you. >> Absolutely not. No back here real quick. >> So, tell me what's going on. >> Well, I told you, right? >> Sir ID is on her phone. You want to plug this phone in your car? the manager. >> Oh, did you? >> With the truth coming into question, the officers dig in, confronting the suspect about the detail she clearly got wrong. >> What's your social security? Okay. Unfortunately, that person has a different social security number. >> What the do you mean? >> Uh-huh. >> What do you mean? What do you mean? >> So, tell me who you really are. >> I'm telling you who I am. What do you mean? >> What's the number? >> Get your phone on. You're going to show us your ID. >> Yeah, I will. I don't have my hands. But yes, I >> You don't have what? >> I don't have my hands. Like >> Well, you're going to tell me how to get your ID. >> Okay. No, that's not fair because I I should be able to navigate my own phone. >> Well, we can do we can send you out as a Jane do. >> That's not me. That's not me. That's not me at all. >> That's not me. What's the name of that? >> I didn't say I didn't say it was >> that's I know my name over here in Poria. >> My birthday. >> Huh? Can we say that photo again? >> All right. So, we're going to give you one opportunity to show us this ID. What's your password? >> Um, it's um I don't know what you guys put the check marks. >> Yeah, I don't have this kind of phone. I have no idea. I'm doing everything in front of you. So, you're saying everything we're doing? >> Yeah, it says her alias is Ashley Ho with >> No, that's not that lady is not me. >> Okay. >> You know, it's a felony to lie about your name. >> Absolutely. Absolutely. >> Oh, alias social security. The officer reviews the phone with the suspect by his side, trying to verify the ID she claimed would be there. >> Ashley, you're going to have to get a felony for violator. >> No, I'm not lying. How am I lying about myself? >> Where's your ID? >> All right. Okay. So, swipe up. >> Swipe up. >> Swipe up or over over. Go over. And then you see pictures. And then Okay. Um, now on the photos now go to um go to the library. >> I don't know how to find me. Okay. So, >> go to library and then go to Ashley Smith. Okay, that's what you got to find. >> You got to search that. >> Yeah, you just search for >> I don't search. >> If you can undo my hand, I can show you a lot easier for me. >> I am not lying who I am. What do you mean? I'm not What do you mean by that? I don't understand that. >> Ashley, you said Ashley. >> Ashley. >> Ashley. And it should be There's a picture of my ID. Like, >> let me see. Let me give me time. You're looking at there. I am right there. I got that. There's my ID. Now, click on that. >> This. >> Click on it. Yeah. >> Now, you should be able to go down. >> Go down these or what? Is that pictures of me only? Okay. Yes. Okay. No. Go down. Go down. Go down. I need to see what you're doing. >> I'm trying. Okay. >> Okay. Cuz I'm not lying about who I am. >> I'm not lying about that. >> I'm not lying about who I am. >> True. >> I've been very honest with you. >> That first name. eyes. No. >> The reality of the situation starts to hit and the suspect responds with loud emotional protests. The officers, however, remain steady and shut them down one by one. >> Wrong. >> Committed a crime. But they didn't do anything wrong. >> I'm so sick of hearing that you say you didn't do anything wrong. >> I didn't do anything wrong. Yes, you did. >> Tell me that. I'm telling you that I'm somebody I'm not. I'm not doing that. >> It's funny that this other girl has your social security. >> I don't know who the she is. How is that my fault? >> Okay. I just ran this ID. Okay. >> Okay. >> This Texas ID. I just ran it right now. I punched in the number right here. You see that? >> Where does it come up? >> Do you see it? >> Yes. >> I just ran that. It says driver's license not found in the state of Texas. >> There's no way. My It's been my driver's license since I was 18. Are you serious? >> Yeah. I'm serious. >> Y'all are wrong, dude. going wrong for this. I'm telling you, take me to jail. Y'all are going to be wrong for this one. You're going to jail. You're going to be wrong. Jail for retail thefts anyway. I don't know why you're arguing. >> I going to take I'm just telling you I am not doing anything wrong besides I told you that I stole. >> But you committed. Exactly. You told you stole. >> I'm telling you I'm sorry. I'm not. >> Well, guess what? They'll finger you there and they'll know. >> Yes, I know that 100%. And you're going to be wrong, dude. Because I know I'm right, dude. I know who the I am. >> Watch your language. There's kids walking around. >> I know. I stop telling me I'm not who I say I am. I know who the I am. >> You know how you hear me? Do you want this window rolled up? You cuss one more time. The window will be roll. >> Go back to bed. >> There's kids out here walking around. You're act like a fool. >> Well, y'all are telling me I'm somebody I'm not. >> You know how you prevent all this? You know how you prevent all this? You don't steal. >> I know that. I know that I up by doing that. I apologize. I do apologize because I get that. Take me to jail for that. I get that. >> Hey, don't. It's fine. But don't tell me I'm not telling you who I am because I know who I am. I know who I am. >> I don't know who takes a picture of their ID but doesn't have an ID. >> I know who I am. >> Usually those are fraudulent ones. >> No, that's not a fraudulent ID, dude. I know. >> No, you're not. You keep saying I told you like five times. >> In the end, the suspect was charged with retail theft. Number two, it took a lot of patience to end this shoplifter's act. On April 23rd, 2024, officers were dispatched to a local Walmart after reports came in about a woman caught shoplifting on surveillance. Officers arrived just in time to stop the woman as she's preparing to leave in her vehicle. >> Ma'am, sit back in your car. >> Okay, I pay for this. >> Okay, sit back in your car. We'll figure this out in a second. >> All right, here. pull up a couple more for you so I can get behind you. >> Okay. >> 135. I got her stopped in front of the store. to stop the brother. >> Yeah, just for now. >> Okay. Can I talk to you for a second? >> Yeah. No, we're going to Trust me, we're going to figure it all out. You got your DL on you real quick? >> No, I don't. >> Okay. >> I had just bought this car. >> Okay. Just here. Sit down. Relax for a second. Okay. >> I have a flesh eating bacteria, sir. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> Yep. I see it. >> And I had came here to get this stuff. >> Okay. >> I just bought this car. The dude that I bought it from went to jail. >> Okay. Problems with >> We'll go Let's go in the AP office. Well, no, cuz I didn't do nothing. >> Well, you know what? Fine. >> Well, here's here's what we're going >> I don't want my car towed and stuff cuz I need my stuff. >> All right. All right. I will try and help you as much as I can. >> I don't want to touch nobody. I have a flesh neck, too. >> I got you. All right. >> That's why I don't want to do that. >> Well, well, you're going to have to wait here for somebody else get here and sit with you then. So, >> that's fine. That's fine. I ain't got no problem with that. Can I smoke my cigarette? >> Yeah. Hey, so what's your uh what's your first name? >> Maria. I have a warrant in Collinsville, but they told me all I had to do was come in, and that's what I plan on doing yet tomorrow. >> Maria, what's your mail? >> Before I went into the hospital. >> What's your mail initial? >> I don't have one. Sorry. >> What's your last name? >> I don't got no lighter. >> I got you. You got a phone number? >> Um, >> okay. Let's figure I'm going to figure out what's going on. >> I didn't steal nothing. >> Okay. All right. >> Copy one. 27 29. >> Now that the suspect is detained, the officers make their way to the surveillance room to review the footage firsthand. [music] >> All right. What's up, man? What's going on? >> This is >> Did she actually get the stuff or? >> Yeah, the girls. The girls know. >> Okay. I just need some mail to get here. >> Yeah. >> So, what did she buy? >> She's looking for a lighter. >> Yeah, it looks like >> she got the TV. >> Yeah, it looks like she got the TV. She got a bunch of stuff. Other stuff like the vacuum and ties and stuff like What did she not pay for? >> That's what I believe she didn't pay for. The girls know. Uh, >> we got to find out. But this is what she did pay for. >> Yeah. Okay. Correct. >> All right. >> 135. Who's uh responding out here? Becca. >> This is a This is a fun one. >> All right. Just kidding. What we got? >> So, she paid for this stuff. She She come She been missing all the time >> at this time. Thank you. >> She had way more stuff. >> This her third time this week >> that she stole? >> Yes. She only got caught today. >> Well, they got four items on her. >> She pushed out a uh a TV where on Sunday? >> Well, the TV She's got a TV on there. >> Yeah. No, no, she she bought a TV today, but I'm saying >> she pushed out Sunday. A TV. >> Okay. >> So, you have video of all that everything? >> Yep. >> Okay. >> I'm trying to get her coming in because she saying she came in with all that stuff. She didn't. >> She said she's What? >> She said she came in with all that stuff in her book. >> All right. Well, let's see what's going on before we >> But you did the video. >> Huh? Video were walking out with it. >> Yeah. I know the charm that she did >> because if she tried to make an argument to one of you guys that she >> came here with the stuff, right, then we need the first thing we need to do is validate she walked in the store or not. >> Yep. Cuz look, that's her. >> Yep. >> And that's all the stuff. That's a whole different TV, ain't it? Oh, wait. I don't know. I like to keep a >> Which car is hers? >> This one right here. >> What is this? Like 12:30? >> 12:30. >> The deeper they look into the footage, the more apparent it becomes that there's clear evidence tying the suspect to the theft. She steal a vacuum every time. So I already knew that vacuum was on there. She reselling the stuff on Facebook. >> She out here explaining to them. Look >> to explain stealing. >> Yeah. More officers out there. Yep. >> Are they making her come in? >> There she is. >> All right. Yep. Let me see. >> Let me see these other items. We're going to make her watch. All right. So, I see. Oh, yeah. >> All right. So, that's at least >> closet. >> All right. Yeah. Just stay right there. >> Yep. And she said she bought if she got four items. Tide TV and trash bag. >> So she paid for Tide. She paid for the hefty trash. >> Okay. >> And she got the TV. >> But we have She has plugins. She has brief air. >> This is what 1347. Just leave it right there. >> Okay. 126 135. >> She thought I wanted to come in here during the day. >> All right. She didn't come in here. So, >> okay. Let me stand back here. >> All right. So you can see right there, she's only paid for the TV, the Tide, the Hefty. Yeah, >> that vacuum is not paid for. >> Okay. So she's telling us she came in the store with the vacuum right there. >> She walked in at 13:22 with nothing. That's her. >> You see video of her entering the store empty-handed? >> Yeah. Well, fast forward that. This is her getting out of her car. So yeah, you did? Yeah. Okay. So I'm going take it back to the park. You guys want to She paid for the TV. >> Yeah, just let me actually walk her in with nothing before I arrest her. >> What? U >> we also we going to we got to do another case on her for th Sunday, right? Sunday. She pushed out on Sunday. >> She did. >> How much? >> Probably around $3 $400. >> Okay. >> About to get that together. So, I guess I can just [ __ ] her. >> The footage reveals a troubling pattern, and it's clear this isn't her first time. As officers prepare to confront her, her attitude takes a sharp turn. >> Well, what I would do is confirm on council's warrant. >> Yeah. >> Transport her, meet a council officer at Hollywood Heights or something. Give her out of custody of this. She wanted to put theft in anyway cuz she pushed out on him and she got like $800 for that. >> Go ahead and confirm what you want, please. >> Okay. She need to call Walmart in paper. So, >> so is the case from this weekend from this store or store? >> No. No. This is us right now. >> The vacuum and the cricket materials are today for this. The case you were referencing that you had case from was it Sunday? Sunday. Is that this store or Collins? >> This store. Okay. >> What are we going to do with the car? Leave it here. >> When she's done, sanitize. Sanitize her car. >> And then whatever she touches and booking, also sanitized. And if you need help, I'll go back to help you clean. That's the that stuff is super. >> All right, ma'am. >> Some of those stuff that y'all got is my stuff that I got from a different store a long time ago. >> Receipt. >> I can't get the receipt when I bought them weeks ago. Them vitamins of mines and and one of them are open. >> Huh? They came from Walmart and Grand City. I I can show you one of them. >> The dudes are my sit down. >> If they wasn't on the receipt, they shouldn't be in that bug. >> I'm telling you, you sit down. If we can find out that they are mine, >> right? Here. Look. Set that down. >> Clean my whole car. >> Set that down. Thanks, but no thanks. >> Here. Look. Stand up. Stand up and turn around. >> No, you're I'm putting you in handcuffs. >> Why? >> Because you already because y'all take it so it's not mine. >> Okay. Well, we'll figure that out. But you're going you have to stand up. Put your hands up. Tension is rising, but the officers hold their ground, offering both reassurance and a clear explanation of what could come next. >> Stand up. >> Come on. >> Why y'all put me in jail? >> Well, I'm going to take you to the apartment and we're going to interview. I'm going to book you there and then >> What's going to happen to my car? >> I'm not going to tow the car. >> Can I move you somewhere else? >> We'll take the car. >> You have something with me? >> No, I don't. >> I don't have anything. >> You have anybody hold? >> No. >> No. Listen, can I call somebody to come? Hold on. Can I call somebody to come get it? >> Yeah, you can. >> Can I use the phone? >> I don't have a phone. >> Are you working with them? >> What calls? >> Yeah. >> Yeah. What they say? >> So, what they going to do? >> There's a phone number in the cab for you. >> Okay. I'll call. >> Okay. So, we we got we got to figure out Remember I explained to you what what's we got to wait to find out what Madison County says cuz you got you've got a court case in Madison County that you got you got to clear up. Okay. So, now we need to we need to get with Madison County to find out what's going on. Would you like because a lot of times they they they may not admit you. They may just give you a court date and say come back at a later date because they may not want that. >> You know what? I'm get out of jail tomorrow. >> If they take you today that's a that's Yeah. Because here's the thing is listen with these people with the jail um with the jail their their main their main goal is keeping that out of the population. Okay. >> But y'all still don't take me. >> So no. So I'm taking you all. Okay. Okay, we're going to go to a Fallon and then I'm going to book you and we're going to interview you and then I'm going to release you. That's pro Fallon side of it. >> I'm over there with the car. >> Well, we're going to we're going to let you park it here. >> We're not fine. >> We're not going to tow it. Well, he's going to come back. He's got the key. >> I'm going to lose my car. I don't give a >> sit down. All right. Just sit down till we're done. >> Okay. If Listen, normally if that car got towed for a felony retail theft, which is a felony, it would be $500 to get it out of town. If officer Goodman's letting you park it on the lot, he is we he is cutting you up. >> I don't want to lose my car. I don't care if I got to walk around. So after after we do the So after we do the old salad thing. So it's going to be two things. Either I'm going to let you go and somebody's going to pick you up and bring you back to your car or you're going to Yeah, I'm good. Or you're going to go be transported to Collinsville. >> She's secured in cuffs and just before they escort her out, officers conduct a pat down. >> Collinsville already know about me, >> right? So if they don't, that's fine. But I got to take you back. All right. So the more cooperative you are, I'm helping you out with the car. Okay. >> All right. I appreciate that. >> Okay. So look, it take us hour tops. So go down there. I'm going book you. Then we're going to do an interview for this and then I'll take you now. Now and I'll explain that process after. Okay. >> I'm paying. >> All right. So I'm just going to scare you in the car for now. All right. Let's turn around and then we'll figure out the rest of this. All right. Not too tire. All right. >> 135. One female in custody. Hold on, ma'am. I got I got to check you real quick. All right. I just got to check. You don't have anything else on here. Do you >> go on my razor blade in there? >> Do you? >> Yeah, just right here. >> Which one? >> Right there. >> I keep it on me. >> Where? Right underneath this. >> Yep. It's white. >> It's a razor blade. >> Well, you can't grab it. It's inside. >> Yeah, this is a razor blade. It's just a straight razor. >> Why do you have a straight razor? >> Because I'm black and I go through a lot of stuff. >> Heard that. Um Taylor, >> just unc um >> you said it's on this side. >> It's on this side right here. This is a straight right. Take another one. >> No, just I got a good bra. >> All right. Um >> it's just a straight right. Is this wrong? >> It's right there. >> Just grab it. >> Just grab it, man. >> All right. >> Just grab it. Grab it. Grab the wallet. Grab the wallet. >> Yes. >> No. Grab it. Wait. Is right there. It's right there. >> With a razor still out of reach, the officers push forward. But the look on the suspect's face shows she's had enough of the back and forth. >> You feel it? >> It's right there. >> Yeah, she's saying it. Grab it. >> Just grab it. >> All right. >> Grab it. We don't care. Grab it. Grab it. I authorize you to grab it. My gra >> All right. Ain't time. >> It's a razor. It don't matter. It's right there. Grab it. >> Right here. It's right here, baby. It's right there. You see it? Just grab it. >> All right. I got to feel it first. I don't want to cut myself. All right. >> You're not going to cut yourself. It's closed. Just grab it. Right there. >> Just grab it. >> Well, yeah. Let's We'll probably have a You can have a female officer in the station where it's >> This hurts. Just relax. >> Let's not offic. >> All right. Let's do that. Let's do that. >> All right. My car is over here to the right. >> Yeah. Yeah. We're gonna have a female officer meet with us in the station in privacy in a room with no video. >> I know that. But we but we need to protect your privacy here. >> My privacy. >> All right. Hang tight for that. I'll hold a cigarette for you. >> Well, yeah. Do that here. I'll tell you. >> I just want to smoke a square, man. I ain't trying to >> Where are your cigarettes anyway? >> Huh? >> Where are your cigarettes? >> They in my glove compartment right there as soon as you open them up. I'm not trying to run. I don't care about none of that. >> I'm pretty sure I ain't going to jail. >> I'm just going to move your hands to the front. >> That's fine. I'm pretty sure I ain't going to jail. >> You're not getting any more trouble, right? No, I'm not stupid. >> With the suspect's help, the razor is safely retrieved. And before heading to the cruiser, the officers allow her one final request. >> Oh, you got double lock. >> Here you go. Take that right here. >> That's how easy that was. It was right there. >> Yeah, you got you got stuff. You know, we can't >> Yeah, I know. Y'all can't do that. >> All right, just hang that right here. You stand right by my car right by the door and I got this. We're good on this girl. >> I think my lighter's right there. >> Where's your ladder at? >> So you So you you went uncooked her and she got it. Do you need Do you want to get a female? >> No, I'm good. That's what's up. Yeah, I just She's getting her cigarette, so she just It's all right. >> You can disregard them. She was she wasn't going to be able to do this. Uh I don't know why this was a good idea to tell her she could do this though. Where's your ladder at? >> It's right there. >> There's some of the station. >> It's right there. >> Thank you. >> Where at? >> It's right there. The what? >> All right, just grab it real quick. >> I need to hurry up. I need to get her out of here. So, >> okay. >> The suspect was charged with retail theft. Number one, Karen walked out like she owned the store. Police were waiting. On December 18th, 2025, officers were called to a Target after staff reported a familiar face. Staffs say she's been caught before, and this time officers arrive before she can get away. >> Lindsay, stop. >> Jesus. Hi. >> Hello. >> Hi. You're under arrest, but you're under arrest. >> Are you stealing? >> Put your hands behind your back. >> Put your hands behind your back. >> You're under arrest for like five counts of mental. >> Excuse me? >> For like five counts of felony. How? >> Merry Christmas. >> You'll find out. I I'm really serious. >> We will show you all the details. We'll tell you let's go to the office. >> I mean, >> we literally watched you on camera. So, >> I I for what exactly? >> What's up, dude? >> Mhm. >> Can you guys explain to me >> when's the sick? >> Oh, yeah. We will. >> Yeah, we will. >> Definitely. >> Once you have anything on you? >> No. >> Nothing on you? Okay. No pockets or anything? >> No. >> Okay, perfect. Go ahead and have a C4. >> Here's the deal. Okay, you've been caught on camera since like September of this month doing the $500 or $300 skip scanning stuff all the time. It's all on video. It's all documented. Well, Hold on. We will ask you the questions and do all that stuff after the fact. But at this point, there is like five cases of retail cash felony level. >> Okay. Is your ID in here? >> Um, if my wallet's in here, I don't know if my wallet's in there. Are you? >> Yeah. So, we're going to go under the car where there's more cameras and more microphones. I'm going read your rights in the car so you know what your rights are and I'm going to ask you if you want to talk about this whole thing and and I'm going to tell you the details of every single case that I have on you. >> Okay. >> And the the dates, the times, the totals, all that all that stuff. I'll even show you pictures and videos of you doing all this stuff. >> Doing what? >> It's called skip scanning. You scan one thing, put like three or more in a bag, and vice versa. The officers try to explain what's going on, but instead of listening, the suspect brushes them off with an arrogant tone. >> So, it's all on video, so we'll chat about if if you want to >> I need my you to call my husband, and I actually don't want to chat. >> And that that's your right as well. >> Sure. What you >> I'll still fill you in with all the details, >> you guys. Okay. >> Okay. >> I would have zero reason to steal. You know that, right? I'm assuming it >> everyone has situations in their life. I don't know >> what your life is. I >> Okay. >> I don't know whether that's one from this morning. 18th today. Yeah. >> Well, there should have been a purchase one and then a return one. >> This is the purchase before. >> There was a return. >> Yeah, that that was with the statistics. >> What's the confusion? >> So, so [clears throat] there was an issue this an issue an incident this morning where I believe a similar thing has happened. I just haven't got those details yet to be able to confirm or deny what I'm being told by the staff here. >> No, >> you were here this morning. >> They said you stole stuff. I don't know what you stole yet, if anything. So, I want to find that out first before I even ask you about it. >> So, this is basically a lot of things. >> Let's go take a seat in the car. We'll figure this whole thing out. >> Bring my purse, my belongings that are all over the table. >> Wherever you go, it's going to go with you. >> How do I know you? >> You ready? >> What's your name? >> Last one. >> R. You have a girlfriend? >> Yeah. >> Her name? >> Yeah. >> Used to work with her. Okay. >> I think you actually came to my house for a welfare check, actually. >> Okay. Yeah. >> Do you remember that? >> No. >> Okay. >> These officers do. Let's go. >> She makes one last attempt to get under the officer's skin, but they don't bite and quickly put an end to it. >> Do that situation. >> Sure. We'll we'll figure this whole thing out. Don't worry. >> Let's just go sit in the car first and we'll get this whole thing. Um, >> there I'm going to get y'all to the rain first, but it's nasty out here right now. >> I have a question. When somebody calls and says like what double lock, you know, it might get tighter on your wrists, but you don't want that to happen. >> I mean, once I'm in, you can't take them off. >> That's we'll get into that. That's all policy stuff. Okay. Hop in the car. Take a seat. Do you want to go in and figure out the rest of today's stuff? >> You good? I'll chat with her. The keys and stuff. Are >> you sure? >> Like, is Britney doubting this at all? >> Totally sure. >> 100%. >> Yep. >> We'll cut off now. Okay, let me pull this up real quick and we'll go over this whole thing. >> Can you hear me? Okay. >> Yeah. >> Okay. So, I'm going to read you your rights first before I ask you anything about anything, just to make sure you're legally protected. >> Okay. With the suspect in custody, the officer takes a moment to dig into her background and investigate the prior theft she's been linked to. >> So, here's what I'm going to do. I'm going to tell you all the details first and then I'm going to ask you questions. You you don't have to answer them. If you want to say I'm done talking, we can just do that >> and and do all that stuff. I'm going to start with the one on November 3rd. Okay. At about 10:30 in the morning. >> I mean, the dates and the times are not going to mean anything. I'm looking at >> that would have been a a Monday morning. Okay. There was an incident here where you were reported to be skip scanning, which means you have like a product in your hand and two products in this hand. You'll scan one and put the other two in a bag without even scanning them. That's what they classify as skip scanning here. >> And that supposedly >> that's supposedly happened multiple times and it's all been caught on camera. >> Okay. And the total that you did not pay for that day is $355. >> Are you That's That's exactly what the store has told us word for word. >> You have no idea what these items I mean that's ton of money to not >> Yeah, I do. >> So that day was the Christmas tree day when there was a Christmas tree in your cart the entire time. Never got scanned. Never got paid for. None of that stuff. There was a Wondershop [music] branded item. I don't know what that is. And along with kids clothing and women's clothing and you're telling me all of these things were not >> correct, >> which means they were >> correct. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> So, that was that incident. I mean, you don't have to go through all of these if this is what they're all going to be like because I number one have no way to know what, you know, the days and the times and what was purchased when. So, >> okay. >> The suspect keeps denying every accusation, but the officer doesn't stop listing out the overwhelming number of items she's accused [music] of stealing. >> Do you ever remember buying a Christmas tree here? probably at half. >> Okay. Do you ever remember maybe selecting one here and not paying for it? >> No. >> Okay. There was an incident on October 23rd when there were multiple things of PSD underwear taken, a Champion t-shirt, like the Champion brand t-shirt, and a Cat and Jack toy. >> Does that ring any bells to you? in the wagon. >> What' you say, sir? >> I have all of those things not paying for them or scanning them or whatever is being okay. I mean, I Yeah, there's no way for me to know what you're talking about or how. >> Okay. So, >> so the total that day was 386. Okay. And there was one more. I'll I'll go over it with you just so we can kind of attempt to get some kind of understanding of what we're having to do. Um on [clears throat] so the 16th of this month, so two days ago, that was the biggest one. It was 582. >> Yeah. Which would have been on Tuesday of this week. It's Thursday right now. Okay. And that many items of what? >> Yep. Let me There was facial cream like a Peter Thomas branded facial cream. There were some Lemi gummies vitamins. >> Are you able to see like what my credit card actually paid for? >> So, I cannot see that on the like the law enforcement side of things. >> Backup arrives with a receipt in hand showing just how much was nearly stolen. And given her history, the total is staggering. >> There is a receipt that Target has that shows what you paid for and what you didn't pay for. That would be all something like would have to come out in court with Target's people and your attorney to figure out, >> you know, all that all that stuff. But that was when you showed up in the black BMW two days ago at around 9:30 in the morning. If that rings any bells at all. >> Yes, I can hear on that day. Like what you're saying? No. >> Did you make any selections of like like PJ clothing or anything like that? Like pajamas? >> Yes, I did. >> Um that's today's >> today's at 5.5 something >> 500 total >> today. Oh, just now. >> Just now. Um we are going to we're going to go inventory the car. >> Okay. >> And um looking for properties for install. >> Okay. >> Um you already explain >> I'm about to move in the car. >> Okay. We'll touch on this on today's thing in a second. Um being the fact that we now have enough parable cars to arrest you for multiple cases of retail theft, we're also going to be seizing your car. Okay. We are required to do that by department policy, county policy. So, my partner and my other partner are going to go to your car, make sure nothing else illegal is inside of your car, inventory the whole car, and it's going to get towed. >> Does that make sense? >> And why exactly? >> So, being that you're >> So, when you go into my car and see that there's no inventory that they are accusing me of stealing, >> you still tow my car. >> Right. So, it's being seized with tote and seized because of your multiple retail theft cases. It doesn't matter if the property's there or not anymore. The fact that you're the owner of the car and your car was used. >> Well, actually, I don't think I >> Is it Ryan? >> Pretty sure. >> As the officer lays out more of the evidence, he gives the suspect one final opportunity to be honest about what really [music] happened. >> Well, nevertheless, the car that you brought here is the one that's going to be getting used. Well, seized. Um, if there is property in there that checks to one of these cases, it'll be then brought out brought back into the store to be able to, you know, put them together. But at this point, that's what's going to happen with your car. Um, do you still want to keep talking about these cases? We can touch on today's >> I mean, I'm not I'm not sure for me. >> Okay. So, I I will literally tell you what I was watching on the camera, and we all watched on the camera. When you were scanning stuff today at the selfch checkout, you would have stuff in your left hand, scan something in your right hand, and then take everything together and put it in the bag. That literally happened. I watched it happen on the camera. We also watched you select the boxes of Lego toys, put them in the cart, and never actually scan them ever. So, that that definitely happened, too. But that watch happen on camera. >> Okay. There were two transactions. Yeah, they watched you the entire time in the store from the time that you picked up the Legos. Just to talk about Lego stuff, the time that you picked it up to the time you were met with us outside right here, the Legos went in the cart and never moved. They were always in the cart. Does that make sense? >> Yes. Um the one box that's because they doesn't fit. I don't think either of the boxes, which is also why the Swiffer that was on the one receipt that I heard was small wasn't So, I I can go over all these items that were not scanned >> because today it's 587. It's It's the new new highest total today. >> It's a bunch of health products. There's Coca-Cola. There's [snorts] whatever mint it is. I don't know what that is. Um the Legos are both on here. She stays in denial, brushing off the conversation with a smug attitude until the officer delivers the blunt truth [music] she's been trying to ignore. >> I mean, it's it's I we've all watched the videos. We we've seen what's been happening. >> Okay. >> Um I'm not trying to say you're a bad person or anything like that. I'm just trying to do [clears throat] my job. But if I literally watch like like this situation, the Legos go into the cart and never leave again and never get scanned, then you leave the last point of sale. That crime's been committed. I've watched it happen, you know. So I that's that's 100%. >> But it's happened. >> The suspect was ultimately charged with multiple counts of felony retail theft. What's your verdict?
