On December 14th, deputies with the Valencia County Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 call reporting a possible homicide. The caller claimed he had killed his entire family with a firearm. Due to the severity of the report and the nature of the call, multiple deputies were dispatched to the scene to secure the property and check for victims. If you can hear me, I just want to help you. Upon arrival, deputies encountered the suspect outside the residence, covered in blood and holding a bird. He was taken into custody. With the suspect secured, deputies ran towards the home. Officers began a structured sweep of the home to locate any victims or additional individuals. Go to that door. Got it. Go to that door. As deputies move further inside the residence, they located four individuals lying in close proximity to one another, all unresponsive and surrounded by significant amounts of blood. You got it? After clearing the main residence, deputies continued searching the rest of the property, including detached structures, vehicles, and surrounding areas. This extended search was conducted to ensure that no additional victims, suspects, or potential threats were present on the property. Correct. Sheriff's office. Bathroom. Got a bathroom. Come here. Deputies then made entry into the room and encountered an older male later identified as Leonardo Leyva Beltran. He was found inside the room shirtless and appeared to have been sleeping prior to deputies making contact. He complied with deputies' commands once contact was established. He was escorted out of the structure and taken to the front of the property where he was secured in a patrol vehicle. This was done for scene safety and to maintain control. I had a theory. Authorities confirmed that the victims were his immediate family members, including his father, Leonardo Leiba, his mother, Adriana Bencomo, and his two brothers, Adrian Leiba and Alexander Leiba. All four were found deceased inside the home, having sustained fatal gunshot wounds. The suspect, Diego Leiba, was charged with four open counts of first-degree murder. The investigation was later handed over to New Mexico State Police, who assumed full responsibility for the case. As of now, the case remains unresolved, with court proceedings on hold as Diego Leiba undergoes a competency evaluation. Prosecutors say the case cannot move forward until it's determined whether he is mentally fit to stand trial.
