I'm going to be attempting. >> This is a look at a wild chase that pulled multiple [music] law enforcement agencies together across Wisconsin to stop a man fleeing in a semitr. But the situation takes an even crazier turn when they realize [music] he isn't alone. that he is being chased by the hood. Okay. He is not aware that you are law enforcement. >> You got to take that door out. Get off the >> They're not officers. >> Chill. >> It's around [music] 300 p.m. on August 25th, 2023, and these troopers are setting up tire deflation spikes after multiple police departments across Wisconsin are alerted to a stolen semi-truck whose driver refuses to stop. But this is only a part of a drawn out chase that's about to take [music] several shocking turns. This is already the third attempt to [music] use tire spikes. And while troopers and deputies managed to deploy them successfully, the driver still refuses to stop. The whole thing began around 2:50 p.m. with a 911 call from a trucking company reporting that a former employee, 47-year-old Michael Jones, had taken off with one of their semi-truckss from an arena in Warren, Wisconsin. Monroe County deputies had initiated the chase. But when Michael hit I94 in a [music] desperate attempt to lose the deputies, additional units joined in. But despite multiple attempts by deputies and state troopers, Michael is not in the mood to give up. >> To all units, no longer able to spike the vehicle as it's riding on its rim. >> All right, it's a high-risisk stop. Just don't flag your body. Problem was is I didn't get a good pull and I tried to pull it again before and I got a good pull and then >> just should have told you. >> No, it was my fault. >> I'll be clear. I'll just remain in the station. My support is needed. >> Um, are you okay? You want to see us through? >> Yeah. Yeah. >> Okay. I figured you did, but if you want to go to the hospital, go to the hospital. >> Oh, no. They're not falling off. We didn't lose a finger right now. >> We already I'm pretty sure he wants to see this, too. Monro County had the mail driver on the line. He's admitting he was not stopping. Monroe wants to know if you want their tag team as well. >> Despite the other trooper in this squad burning his fingers while retrieving the spike strips after one of the attempts. They remain in the pursuit as it crosses into Juno County with deputies from the sheriff's office assisting. Are you on the phone with this driver on the line? They have not transferred to us. Right now still copy traffic [laughter] >> two general myself and one are in the >> copy too right now. It looks like 30 pursuit still involved for the time being ahead. Will you be attempting to block with the MRAP? >> We're going to try and get close and see what we can do. General >> a Juno County deputy later learned that the trucking company owner's son had met Michael and Warren shortly after he finished a delivery. During that conversation, he confronted Michael about making deliveries outside of work areas and being late. And that's when Michael was fired. He was told to leave the truck at the truck stop. Instead, the job loss sent Michael off the rails. Panicked and paranoid, he ignored warnings that police would be called, hit the pedal, and took off with the semi. And as deputies see that Michael still isn't giving up. Even with shredded tire debris littering the road and putting life and other drivers lives at risk, they soon find out that he isn't alone inside the truck. >> And Monroe County found it out of the pursuit. >> They just turned around. Do you know just 43 street patrol is advising when they get into the construction area the semi may try to ram vehicles again may try to ram your vehicles not 43 we have a female on 911 advising she is in the semi with the driver again female is in the semi with the suspect driver >> weapons >> we're trying to attend that now she's advising she's trying to exit the moving semi I'll be with the rest of us 59.8 continuing 26 59.8 eastbound continuing. >> 43 male is possible 96. He is advising he is being chased by the he is not aware that you are law enforcement. >> Michael's on andoff girlfriend of 15 years who also works at the same trucking company had been with him during the delivery. After he was fired, Michael became convinced she had been working with the owners behind his back. She was still in the truck when he took off after losing his job and despite her begging him to stop, Michael held her against her will and he kept going. Later, Michael will alleged that she had mentioned the K to him in the past and that fear fed into his belief that white officers and others were out to get him. >> Calling back on 911, you can hear the male yelling in the background. Our female victim is going to be trying to get the male information. 306 Juno County is now requesting to set up spike strips if possible for the rear semi tires on this truck. It is still rolling but smoking. Currently passing the 79 mile marker. 113 is 84.4 spikes. >> So they're about a mile away spikes. The Bearcat is in lane one. Bearcat lane one. >> So, could the Bearcat get next to him in lane one and then try to keep them in lane two for the spikes. The spike lane two. >> I don't know. Maybe. >> I just don't know how that works. >> That actually might be a good idea. Throughout the chase, the woman calls Juno County dispatch multiple times, telling them she can't jump out of the truck because she's afraid of being run over by oncoming traffic. She also repeatedly tells dispatch that Michael is unarmed. By now, several agencies, including State Patrol, the Juno County Sheriff's Office, Hochunk Nation Police, Wisconsin Dell's PD, and Lake Delton PD have joined to try to stop him. A bearcat is also brought in, and repeated spike attempts shred the truck's tires, scattering debris across the roadway. But even after losing two tires down to the rims, Michael continues driving the semitruck at dangerous speeds, endangering everyone on the road. As Michael keeps driving recklessly, swerving between lanes. A witness near I94 manages to record the chase that captures just how intense, urgent, and high stakes the effort to stop him has become. Fight. Time for another successful spike. I'm going to be attempting 114. >> But the risks Michael keeps taking aren't helping him anymore. And [music] soon his decision to keep driving the truck on bare rims will turn against him in one of the most dangerous ways imaginable. Suddenly, troopers see smoke coming from the semi-truck and moments later, it catches fire. Michael loses control, sending the truck crashing into a ditch near the Wisconsin Dells area. Copy. We need fuel in the fire on fire. >> Copy on 10 dead. 1070. Oh, >> okay. Copy. 1070. >> It's okay. >> Fire. You know where your fire extinguisher is? towards us. Keep your hands up. >> Female exiting. >> Come back. >> Keep coming. Keep coming. >> Come back here. >> Come back here. Back here. Ready. Right here. Do you have any left on you? >> All right. We have to search you. Okay. Get on the ground. Get on the ground. Put your hand on your back. On your back. I got I GOT You want detain? One detain. All right, I'm good. I'm right by you. >> You want to pat him? Don't push yet. >> Finally, after a 52mile chase and over four spike strip attempts, all the involved agencies have managed to take Michael into custody and rescue the woman. But even then, he isn't done. Before it's over, he will make another bold attempt to escape. Corner rolling that way. Okay, get up. One, two, three. Oh my god. >> Let's go. >> Get up. Stand up. Stand up. Stand up, man. >> Hey. Hey. Help me. They're hurting me. Hold on. >> Bring a flag right there, >> guys. Come on. Take it. Come on. Come on. Come on. >> Let's go this way. >> Come on, guys. Come on. Come on. Hey, he don't have to get a squad car to come no closer. It's okay, guys. You guys got it. Ryan head. >> Good. Good. Yes, sir. >> I don't have nothing. These relax officers stop. Officer, >> just relax. Stop. >> Relax. >> All right. All right. I got to pee, man. >> Her name is Save up for a little bit. >> Hi, my name's Christina. What's your birthday? >> 10452 is in row. >> Is he okay? >> He's fine. He's fine. >> He's fine. Is he okay? >> Yep, he's fine. He's He's under arrest right now. Can't have you go by him right now. Okay. >> Hey, why you go? Uh, make a tackle there, bud. Been in this pursuit since freaking Tommo. [laughter] >> It started when I was leaving my house. >> You guys have tethers in case he decides to start kicking his feet or anything? >> I have not. >> I do. >> You want to grab yours, Molly? I'm just worried he's gonna start again. Might want the bigger bag for the shoes. >> Is that your boyfriend? Boyfriend. All right. I don't need to need to cause any problems. Okay. Just Just stay cool. Okay. >> Okay. Where you from? >> My my bag is in the truck. >> All right. We'll get it. >> So, what's going on? Why? What? Okay. >> Ma'am, can I get my phone back? >> Can I call my son? I don't. >> Yes. >> Can I have you? He won't be able to do much in that. >> And then we'll do this. I'll put this through the door. Where's yours at? >> Back there. >> Hey guys, it's okay. It's okay. You guys got me. Let me show you. I'm hurt. I'm hurt. And it's good. I won't do nothing. I got I got No, I swear to God. That's it, guys. You guys got >> I'm I'm peaceful as Come on. This way. >> This way. Seat in there. >> Get in. >> Come on, guy. >> Oh. Oh. >> Oh, God. >> You got cut on your arm. Just stay here and watch your boy. >> Michael's attempt to resist an escape by kicking the living out of the squad car window sent glass shards flying, injuring one deputy in the arm and a detective in the head, leaving both bleeding and in need of medical attention. >> You need you need some help. >> Don't Don't >> you need some help? >> Don't Don't cause problems. I'm being very serious right now. I think the oil starts on the other side of the corner. I saw him on the way down. Where we taking? >> We're probably going to go to >> Jackson. >> Well, the guy he's coming off the glass, >> huh? >> You got anything? I'll just come back and we'll go through the crossover. >> I'll back up the black unmarked. >> He's in the black unmarked. We're going to follow him. If there's any issues, just pull over right away. >> And as things at the crash site finally start to calm down. The woman calls her family and explains how she had just tried to arrange a ride for herself and Michael after he was fired, but he chose to go in a very different direction. >> Michael has chased the police. They fired him and he flipped out and went crazy and he wouldn't let me out the truck. >> What? >> Can you hear me? >> What? >> I said Michael flipped out and he wouldn't let me out the truck. I said they fired him and he flipped out and he went crazy. >> Oh, wow. They fired him. >> Yeah. And he went crazy and flipped out and he has speeded the police and he let me out the truck. >> How you still in the truck? >> I'm here with the police. He has speeded the police.
