On January 24th, 2025 in Fountain Valley, California, what started as a suspicious person call near a middle school turned into a patrol car takeover with a stolen firearm and an officer-involved shooting in less than 5 minutes. I don't know like Morse code or something. The suspect had reached a different female officer, somehow accessed her patrol vehicle, and got into the driver's seat. [crying] Officer May suffered minor injuries, scraped elbow, shaken, emotional, but physically she survived. And I I ran in the back because I didn't want him to see me and me. Okay. So, I did go in the back and I hid. So, he wouldn't >> Are you Are you hurt at all? Do you need paramedics? No. No, I'm just really shaken up. >> Uh I can call We have a trauma intervention program. It's like a crisis counselor. >> Mhm. You want me to call so I can call somebody I heard sort of be with you right now. Uh Uh we're going to have to go We're going to go through Okay. Okay. All right as well. All right. >> [snorts] >> So, I'm going to sort of ask you what's going on What happened here today? We're going to go through it. It's going to be a few times. I hurt my wrist and my knees. Okay, yeah. If at any time you need to need to take a minute, Mhm. need me to step away, you can take some breaths and you know, sort of collect collect your thoughts and whatnot, just let me know, okay? >> Okay. Um So, I had I delivered this and then I went over there to the school district to finish delivering mail. Then I had one more letter to deposit over here at 10175. And then I came out and I didn't know um that this guy was being chased and all of a sudden the girl pulls out in that police car and then I didn't see the guy at first and then I saw him and then he was like reaching in on her. Like trying to grab her out of the car and stuff cuz she had the door open. He's trying to grab her out of the car and then I'm like, "Oh my god, this is not good." So, I ran in the back of my vehicle because I noticed that she had fallen out of the car and the gun fell out of a holster and he got it and then he just started shooting and I was in the >> shooting? He started Yeah, that's the last I saw. I was like Yeah, it was I didn't want to I was just wondering if that other officer's up there. Okay. Yeah, everyone's Everyone's okay. All officers are okay. Okay. All right. Yeah, I just got in the back. All I heard was bullet holes coming through my car mask. I'm like, "Oh my god." I was so scared. Oh my god. You're okay. Um Just take Take some deep breaths. You're okay. You're [snorts] good now. We're going to send somebody out here. They're going to Well, I have my boss here and then my other boss, I think he's coming. Okay. All righty. Um I have I have it Yeah, that's what I was going to ask is like, are we going to have access to the vehicle or is it going to be there for a while? Uh for right now it is a crime scene. Okay. Okay, but I need my >> have like all the mail up there for a whole for a whole route? The suspect was unresponsive with shallow breathing after being shot. [music] Officers immediately initiated CPR and requested medics, but he was soon pronounced deceased. [music] This case is a reminder of something most people don't think about.
