So, today we've got a situation that starts with officers responding to what appears to be a fight involving several people. But, from the very beginning, getting a clear story is almost impossible. Everyone seems to be having a different version of what happened. People are talking over each other, and the deputies are just left trying to sort through a lot of confusion. >> Yeah, you're going to be outnumbered. You can't keep You can't keep the peace, man. What are you going to do? >> Yeah, I'm just >> Y'all need to separate, huh? >> Yeah, I'm just going to go >> [laughter] >> On my way. I'm just trying to clean up. You see me, I'm in here to clean up. >> Now, one person keeps repeating the same point over and over while deputies are trying to focus on what actually happened. >> Yeah, you're good. What's the problem? >> I'm saying like what's going on over here? >> Oh, we need to get her name and date of birth. Go away. >> And um as officers compare [music] different stories, the details stop matching up, and the situation becomes even more confusing. >> You both were down on the beach when the fight broke out, right? Who swung first? >> They they did. >> Who is they? Look at all those marks. Look at all these marks right here. Roxanne has started hitting you. Why did she start hitting you? >> Because her her boyfriend told her to hit me, and then as soon as she did >> Where'd she hit you? >> And then and I got like >> In the face? >> And finally, when deputies stop listening to the explanations and start focusing on the evidence, [music] everything starts making a lot more sense. Now, without wasting any more time, let's jump straight into the video and see exactly what happens next. >> Recording. Mounted. Wi-Fi connected. >> How y'all doing? >> We're doing good, officer. >> Okay. Let me Let me talk to y'all real quick. >> Yeah. You say you got to touch us? >> Yeah. Wall mounted 10-12. >> This is our hotel. >> Okay. >> 908. >> All right. Were you guys arguing or what? >> Yeah. >> Okay. All right, walk right over there for me. Can you? >> Yeah. >> Okay. Can you walk right over there for me? Yeah. Just go over to the truck, please. Hey brother, let me talk to you real quick. >> Come on, boss. >> What's all this about? What's going on? >> Me and his best friends just >> Can you come out here so I can see you? >> Yes, sir. >> Who is the Who is the fight between? >> Between me and my best friend. >> Where's your best friend at? >> She's in the hotel. >> In the hotel? What's up? >> No, it's just girls arguing over some friendship [ __ ] >> Girls were arguing? >> Yeah, they were just >> Where Where's the other girl? >> They went inside. >> You look real banged up. >> It's fine. Chill. >> Yeah, but you got You sure you don't want to be seen? >> No, I'm good. >> All right. Your call. So, they Everybody got pissed off. >> Yeah, they >> Obviously drunk from what I see. >> yeah, yeah. All of them are friends. They're just obviously drunk and arguing. I'm just trying to pick up after them. >> Okay. >> All right. So, the officer's trying to get the basic facts and figure out [music] who fought whom, but the answers are messy and like they're inconsistent, right? One person is visibly banged up but brushing it off, while others are still scattered around. Now, it seems to me that this is becoming less about the fight itself and more about damage control. >> What were you guys fighting about? >> Fight. >> Hm? >> Side boyfriend. >> They're all cousins. >> They're all cousins? >> Yeah. >> [clears throat] >> Got you. So, were they fighting or what? >> No, they were just arguing. >> Arguing and screaming? >> Yeah, they're just screaming. We're just trying to pick up after them. >> I got you. I got you. So, where Where y'all staying? Y'all staying at Majestic right here? >> Yeah. >> Okay. All right. >> I told her it wasn't right to be a side boyfriend, and she took it hard. >> Where are you guys from? Texas or >> Yeah, Texas. >> Okay. Okay, Ronald. All right. >> Who swung first? >> Huh? >> Who swung first? >> She had swung first. >> Why they called you? >> Uh I really I don't know who called Yeah, maybe somebody from up there that saw y'all uh >> arguing >> Yeah, screaming, yelling. >> girls, yeah. I'm I'm the only man. I >> [laughter] >> You're out You're outnumbered, huh? >> Yeah, it's like nine girls over me. I'm like I'm trying to pick up the box over here. >> Uh-huh. >> She was like She was like, "What the [ __ ] you mean? I'm not a side bitch." I was like, "Bro, like you're a side [ __ ] Like you suck." >> So, nobody was physically fighting then? >> No, no. They were just just arguing and everybody went about their way and I'm just out here trying to pick up the box. >> No, please do. Yeah, and just for tomorrow, just so you know, I see glass out here. I know you don't know this, but you can't have glass on the beach, no glass bottles or anything like that. >> This is my first time here. >> yeah. I'm just letting you know. Yeah, get it cleaned up. Mhm. >> You're You're [ __ ] with a married guy. Like it sucks. Like period. Like the whole scenario, like I don't know. >> You're the only guy. You're going to be outnumbered. You can't You can't keep the peace, man. What are you going to do? Yeah, I'm just trying to get y'all to separate, huh? >> Yeah, I'm just going to go >> [laughter] >> about my way. I'm just trying to clean up. You see me, I'm here to clean it up. >> I don't have my ID. I'm from Texas, but I have a picture of it. Does that work? >> Yeah, pull up the picture. I just need the license number. Do y'all Y'all don't have separate rooms? Y'all are staying together? >> No, we got like two rooms. >> Okay. So, maybe that'll uh >> Yeah, but I'm I'm pretty sure I'm I'm just going to go. I'm just trying to clean up so we can get >> Right. Well, so Okay. My concern though is when y'all get together again, is there going to be a problem? >> Oh, no. You ain't got to worry about nothing. Right. We're going to clean up and get the get out of here. >> Nine? Try nine. >> Well, we're not going to try. I either need to see a picture of it or I need your name and date of birth. >> My name's uh Roxana. R O X A N A. >> So, what what girl was causing all the trouble or girls? >> some of the girls that that left already. That's my girl right there. >> I understand that, yeah. I understand that. >> How drunk are you? Are you on something? >> No. >> You're not under the influence at all. You can barely look at me straight. >> No. Uh liquor. >> Okay. >> But >> R O X A N N A, middle initial? >> No. >> Right. Now, everyone's just talking over each other and it's really hard to understand what actually happened, right? Even the guy admits that he's surrounded by a group of girls is just trying to clean it up. Absolutely no class is being shown by anyone in this situation, man. The combined IQ of this entire group seems to be 10. >> Last name? >> Yes, so I'm like I'm over here trying to clean up just >> Yeah. >> You know, I'm just trying to clean up after the girls. I'm the only man out here, so >> I understand. >> Yeah, I'm trying to clean up. >> Okay. You got an ID on you, brother? You said your license is out of Texas? >> Yeah. >> I don't even got my ID on me. >> Okay. Is it in there, or you got it on your phone, or what? >> No, it's probably inside the inside of the >> Okay. Just come over to the truck, and I'll get a notepad. Well, it just takes it takes a little bit longer if you don't have your ID. >> I'm the only man out here. I got >> Yeah. Yeah, yeah. That That is uh can be an issue. Oh. Is his ID in there? >> Um I don't know. >> Oh, okay. I'm sorry. I thought you were handing him that for Okay. The other party's up there, Dawn. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. >> I was cool. I'll give you I'll give you my my name and date of birth or whatever >> Okay. So, she hit you first? >> Yeah. >> You hit her back, and y'all were just rolling I get I'm assuming y'all are rolling around in the sand. Is she your blood sister? >> Yeah, but I was just trying to >> And y'all are just rolling around in the sand fighting each other? >> Yes. >> Like I said, man, I got like eight females over me. I'm the only male. I'm trying to clean up you know. >> Yeah. Do you really honestly think that that's appropriate to do in front of all of these families and children? >> What's your name? >> M A R K >> M A R K. So, let me get this straight, and I want to make sure that I have this right cuz they're not finding your license out of Texas. R O X A N N A is your first name. >> No, N one N. >> One N? >> Yeah. >> And that is your legal name that says on your license, right? >> I have my passport. Yeah. >> All right. Like I said, sometimes this takes a while, so give me >> Like >> I said, man, I'm the only man I got like nine females out here. You You know how it goes. You know what I mean? Like >> All right. Um Go go ahead and go ahead and keep cleaning it up and I'll get back with you. When I asked for ID, >> I look at this guy and I swear he's already repeated, "I'm the only man out here like six times till now." Now we get it, brother. You're outnumbered. But honestly, the officer is starting to notice something else. Meanwhile, the deputy stays patient and he just keeps trying to get the basic facts while everyone else seems determined to make the situation as complicated as possible. It feels like two people are sharing one brain cell. And yes, we all heard that he was apparently the only guy out there trying to clean things up. >> Why wouldn't you just give that to me? >> Um >> He's good. He's going to clean up. This guy is What's up, man? Um still kind of gathering some information, but he told me nobody was fighting. Everything's fine, but I I think maybe she was fighting someone else. And that other someone else is not here anymore. So that's where I'm at right now. >> I mean, I gave him I gave him my stuff. >> Yeah, you're good. What's the problem? >> I'm saying like what's going on over here? >> Oh, we don't have to get information. Get her name and date of birth. Go away. If you want to, you can go to jail. Everybody's giving you the opportunity to walk away. >> go away. There goes my sister over there. >> All right. No, we'll go we'll go talk to her. All right, perfect. Thank you for that. All right. Can you hang out here for just 1 second so I can talk to my partner really quick? All right, thank you, ma'am. I appreciate you. >> Nobody up here is particularly concerned, but that's exactly why officers do not take people's word for it and leave. They've got to verify what actually happened, yeah. And can we talk about our guy for a second? If I had a dollar for every time he mentioned being the only man out there, I'd probably have enough money to book my own beach vacation. Meanwhile, the deputies are comparing notes and trying to separate facts from all the noise and confusion. >> She's asking for her phone so she can call her sister. >> Well, I'm saying what why are you trying to call her sister? >> She's trying to call her sister. Do you have her phone? >> For what reason? >> Are you holding her phone? >> I don't have her phone. >> Okay. You're about to go to jail. Let me be very perfectly [ __ ] clear here. Do you want to go? Do you want to go? Because right now you're impeding the investigation that me and my partner are trying to conduct. >> I talked to you >> really want to sit in jail for your vacation, we can make that happen. I don't want that to happen. But listen. Do you want to go? Do you want to go? I'm not asking if you're scared of jail. I don't care. Then stop. Then just relax. Nobody's harassing anybody. Yes, because you're impeding my investigation. Get away from me. I'm not talking to you, sir. I'm talking to her. So you don't have her phone, right? If you have her phone, you're going to go to jail. Okay. He said he doesn't have it. You know her number? Do you have your agency phone? Don't? I just asked him. He said he he said he didn't he didn't know where it was. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's all good. Uh Hey, how are you doing? Is Sarah available? >> [snorts] >> Uh sorry, I think we got Sorry uh sorry, we got the wrong number, sir. >> What phone number do you want then? >> Uh my my sister's number, Sarah's number. >> Sarah's? >> That was an elderly man. >> Mhm. >> I can take you to our apartment. >> We'll try to call first. If we can't If we can't get her on the phone or we can't remember her number, then we'll end up going up there. >> Okay. >> So, we'll try this first. >> Like if she'll Oh, wait. You got to try to call her first? >> I'm going to I did. >> As you can see, the deputies are just trying to find a phone and contact a family member. And there's a moment where he says, "I've done 7 years." While he says it like a flex, it doesn't really change the situation, does it? The officer gives him several chances to step back, but he just keeps involving himself in a situation that's not his concern. And there are also like multiple issues with his behavior and appearance being pointed out in the moment. >> We can go put him in my car up top if you want. I got it right there. >> Ooh, you cool. You cool. >> You're being ridiculous now. >> I know. I'm >> You want to ask for a problem, you get one, and then >> No, I'm You're not going to handle my wife like that. It's cool. Oh, yeah. You're tough. Oh, you're tough. >> What happened? >> Like we didn't do nothing, but they were trying to run me. Like what do you want me to do? Like you know I want me to protect myself. Like what's that? Like that's like I feel like if y'all going to kick us to jail, y'all going to kick us to jail. >> Go ahead. What's your sister's name? >> Sarah. >> Sarah >> Velasquez. >> Sarah Velasquez. >> She's a big butt, big big [ __ ] >> Okay. How many were involved with this incident? Three. >> Four. Three, four. >> Three or four plus you, right? >> Yeah. >> Three or four plus her. >> I'm I'm plus five. My man plus six. >> Were you all actively fighting? Were No. >> So, you and who? >> Me, Sarah, Elena. >> Sarah Sarah, the sister, and Elena and her were fighting. I'm Deputy Betancourt with the Sheriff's Office. What is going on today? >> So I guess her boyfriend was like like I guess he got drunk and he was trying to get her to fight us. >> Okay. >> I'm not the problem though. >> [laughter] >> Okay, well, drink some more of that water. >> Yeah, for sure. But we're not the problem. >> No, I get it, but here's >> I swear cuz you can see us hugging and kissing. >> So here here's where we're at. >> So we So he ended up like like hitting one of my friends so we stopped him. I stopped my friend from hitting She hit my other friend. >> Yeah. Here's where we're at, okay? So we get dispatched to this thing. All you guys are fighting. People are calling the Sheriff's Office saying there's people fighting. >> It's family oriented. Yeah. >> Well, they don't know you're family oriented. All they know is there's disorderly intox, right? In a public place. We're getting complaints. >> So we were stopped like we just grabbed him and stopped him. My friend as soon as we grabbed my friend my friend my friend walked up my friend like So we we offered to leave, you know what I mean? >> That's my sister right there. >> Okay, hold on. >> Well, the guy who kept inserting himself into the investigation is now getting dangerously close to finding out that deputies also have limits. And honestly, the officer showed more patience than most people would do in the same situation. [music] It really feels like every statement comes with an unexpected twist. >> Hold on. No, no. Hold on. Hey, don't start doing what your boyfriend was doing. Let them be. All right? We're not going to Just Let them be. Her boyfriend was fighting. >> Mhm. >> She was fighting. You were fighting. Who else was fighting? >> I wasn't fighting. I was stopping the >> She's saying you were fighting. >> No, I was stopping the fight. >> [music] >> I was stopping the fight. >> Don't Don't try to be telling her what to say and not say. >> Cuz she does too much. She's so sensitive like Okay. And then [ __ ] >> What I'm saying is you potentially have a domestic. You potentially have disorderly intox. Which is what? You're her sister, right? >> That's my best friend. That's not my sister. >> What's your name? >> Sarah. >> She's saying you're her sister. >> No, that's my friend. >> You're in a public place, right? You're You're surrounded by the public. The public's complaining about the way you're acting. And now your boyfriend is intervening with law enforcement investigation, which is obstruction. All right. So, all right. She's all banged up with bruises, scratches, everything. And she's saying that your fault. >> We had to grab It was It was me and my friends grabbing her because she was getting really aggressive. >> We got a lot of little things going on. We're trying to get it worked out. We're not trying to hem everybody up, but if everybody needs to go, everybody will go. Okay? You know. >> Valid. And I grabbed him because he was hitting my other friend. So, I had One of my friends My friends grabbed her to stop the fight and I grabbed him. >> Uh I honestly, when I first got here, I did I really wasn't thinking we were going all that route, but it quickly turned. Right? So. >> What happens to family dude? >> It's still battery. It's still battery. Yes. >> For what? >> How intoxicated are you? Cuz I can smell it coming off of you. How much have you had to drink? You're It's completely okay, but how much have you had to drink? >> How much I know you didn't drive. How much have you drank? >> Like like four six shots. >> Six Oh, okay. All right. >> Why? >> Why? Look at all the marks on you. Look at all the scratches. Look at your arm. Look right here. That's Yeah, you're you've been in a fight clearly. And then All right, sounds good. Do me a favor. Um hang up the phone. Let me have that. Let me have your phone. You're not going to go in cuffs, but you're going to sit in the back of my car. You know, your lip looks a little torn up. I'm not sure if that's the sun or maybe that's from that. What? >> And now the story completely falls apart. First, nobody was fighting, then somebody was fighting, then they were just stopping a fight, and now nobody can even keep track of who's a sister, who's a best friend, or who actually got into a physical altercation. And here's what gets people in trouble, right? All the time. Once alcohol's involved, everyone thinks they're [music] explaining themselves clearly, but they're actually making the situation more confusing. The deputy can smell the alcohol, he can see the injuries. He realizes this is much more serious. >> I mean, that that is a crime. >> Because I'm telling you to get in the back of the car, otherwise you're going to go in cuffs and go to jail. Get in my car. I'm not arguing with you, ma'am. Just sit tight and relax, okay? >> No, cuz I think they It's just family stuff, but >> Yeah. >> Um >> So, hold your arms out. Just hold your arms out like this. Just like that. Just fine. >> you're trying to take it, too. >> What? I have to do that. >> Why? But I'm from Dallas. >> Hand me that Hand me that tape, please. There's a lot of moving stuff going on, and there's a lot of people involved, okay? So, we got to talk to everybody and figure out exactly what's going on, and then we'll go from there. What? >> I have bad anxiety. I didn't really feel comfortable saying it. >> Well, take a deep breath. Relax. It has to go in my report. >> Until I told you. >> I just told you. >> No, you didn't. >> You had no idea you had them. >> Yeah, I But you reminded me. >> Okay. We're going to get back to that. Go ahead. Hey, um this one's going to jail, too. I just put her in the back of my car. Two or three? Well, we I got one, but Cameron and I are going to go up and pull out two more from the room that were also fighting. All right. So, we might have We might have a full load going here. You want to call uh the You might need to call the watch commander cuz your manpower. Yeah. Or or call John while he's still out. Yeah, let me uh Yeah, we're going to have to let him know. Well, let me figure out what's going on here first and see if we're actually 10-15 everybody and then we'll we'll go from that cuz we still have to talk to these two people but Yeah, cuz this is soon as I know that I I'll call Martin. Yep, all right, sounds good. Sweet, appreciate you, bro. Yep, yep, yep, yep. [ __ ] All right. >> Which one is Brandy butt? >> No, I'm not doing that right now. >> Okay. No. Don't take a picture of me. I already told you. >> So, right now he's down there going for obstruction and disorderly intox. She is going for intox and I'm pretty sure the Sarah in the back of my car is going for public intox. >> I was trying to fight everybody cuz I whoop everybody like >> No, your your boyfriend was fine until he wasn't. Do any of you all know the door code? >> Yeah. >> I don't know how many times we told him to uh, you know, go away. He just I'm sure that was alcohol induced as well. You know, all these god damn codes. >> And now the deputies realize that they're not dealing with just one problem. They're dealing with a whole chaotic situation involving multiple people. She keeps insisting it is just family stuff as if that makes everything okay, but it does not. If someone's drunk, fighting in public, causing disturbances, [music] and leaving people injured, law enforcement does not ignore it just because the people involved are related. >> Hey, ask her quick if she wants to pursue any charges for battery. So, do you want to proceed with charges on battery? No, you do not. No. No? No. All right, we're probably going to be looking at disorderly intox then. Yeah. All right, so I'll call you back. Yep. I [snorts] don't know what she said. >> Tell me. >> No, I'm I'm not keeping anything from you. He didn't tell me that she wanted to or not wanted to. All right. >> her in Texas if she says yes. >> And this is something most people don't always understand, right? Just because someone does not want to press battery charges does not mean the situation's over and everyone can simply walk away. The deputies still have to handle what happened in front of them. Ma'am, nobody asked for your resume. Now the head count is changing faster than the story itself. And when officers start giving countdowns and warning people that they are about 10 seconds away from jail, >> [music] >> it means the situation's already reached a serious point of no return. >> Hello. >> Hey. >> Who else is in there? >> What did we do? >> I'm asking who else is in there. How many people? >> It's three of us. >> Three? Were all of y'all involved down at the beach? >> No. >> No? Who was involved down at the beach? >> Um >> Nobody. >> Just two of you took >> Yeah, no, that's not true cuz everybody else is saying there were more people. There were a total of five people. >> Yeah, we broke it up. >> Okay, all we need to do is talk to everybody that was down there. So, let's make this very clear. I'm going to ask them one more time, who all was down there? Whoever was down there, I need to talk to them right now. >> This was last minute. I literally just texted my doctor if I could take off. I'm a dental assistant. >> You're a dental assistant. Okay. They got about 10 seconds before they go to jail. >> Why are we going to jail? >> That would be for obstruction at this point. I'm trying to figure out what happened down there cuz we have a >> Let me Let me call her. >> Fast. >> Elena. >> You asked me, was your fight that bad? >> Yeah. >> And finally, the deputy does what good officers do. He stops focusing on the changing stories and starts looking at the evidence. At this point, the officers have heard enough excuses, contradictions, and [music] impaired reasoning to last the entire weekend. >> How am I supposed to know that? >> know. I was drunk. You tell me. >> Well, here, let me show you. Look. >> No, stop. >> Get out here now before you go to jail. I'm not going to tell you again. Ma'am, you too. What happened? Stop. Stop. Relax. You both were down on the beach when the fight broke out, right? Who swung first? >> They They did. >> Who is they? Look at all those marks. Look at all these marks right here. >> That's nothing. I ate that. >> Right? >> Mhm. >> Clearly you were in a pretty decent fight with somebody, right? >> Mhm. I know you can't see that, but you can see it clearly now. Okay? And then, Roxanne has started hitting you. Why did she start hitting you? Where did she hit you? In the face? Same thing on this side, right? All this, you're clearly somebody grabbed a hold of you. That's probably some, you know, You guys are here on vacation. It's not worth Stop talking. You're going to piss me off. Stop talking. Yeah, you were Y'all were whooping each other. That's what I'm saying. Clearly. Probably not good, okay? I hope both of y'all have a good night. I hope y'all both have a good rest of your weekend. The three of them going to jail. So, I'm not discussing somebody else's charges with you. And you know, what do I put on my my tent? Put up your tent? Yeah, the tent canopy. Yeah, put it up. Yeah. You need to bag it up? Yeah. Yeah. Uh The [clears throat] male suspect who was arrested for obstructing an officer and disorderly intoxication, while the two female suspects were arrested for disorderly intoxication. What do you think about this situation? Were the deputies right to make arrests based on the evidence they observed, [music] or should they have handled it differently?
