First name. >> You can call me good citizen. >> Good citizen. Okay. Can I >> ask what you were videotaping? >> Anything I could see? >> Anything you can see? Just in particular. You curious or just >> You said you said you were um doing some kind of investigation. >> Yeah. >> Did they ask you? >> Ask me to leave what? >> I was never in the parking lot. >> When police can't tell the difference between lawful rights and criminal behavior, innocent people will be targeted first. You can't see your ID. >> Why would you need my ID? >> Well, so far I got a You're a trespass. >> So, from what I've told you, I've never been on their property. So, you're just going to take their word or >> step over here with >> No, I don't want to step on their property right now. >> Today, let's see how it ends because the outcome for these lawbreaking cops is the best part. Just one click of the camera and the whole place goes into alarm mode. A guy is standing on a public sidewalk taking a few photos. Then suddenly you hear it. You can't take pictures here. >> No, I'm good. >> All right. What you doing? >> Taking pictures. >> What? >> For my use. >> For my use. I can't what? >> Can't take pictures out here. >> Can't take pictures of this. How you doing? >> All right. >> What are you doing? >> What am I doing? >> I'm taking pictures. >> It's for my use. >> It's a government facility. >> It's a government facility or a NASA facility. >> Is it government? I can't hear you. Is it >> government facility? >> I say is it government or NASA? >> Government. NASA with the government. >> Well, NASA is an independent [music] agency. It's not a government agency, per se. >> More about the government. >> Okay. So, I can't take pictures of a NASA building. >> Permit. You can't >> without a permit. >> Yes. >> Oh, okay. So, how do I get a permit? >> NASA website and tell them what you're going to do, whatever you're going to do, and they will take care of it. >> Not you're not. You might be able to take pictures. >> Uh-huh. >> Uh-huh. >> Okay. But I already have written authorization. I don't understand. >> So you need to go to the proper protocols. >> Yeah. >> On best values to go to NASA website and you need to do this. >> What is the reason for you to do this? >> It's for my use. But I say I already have written authorization. So I don't understand what the problem is. >> I don't have it with me. They store it in uh Washington DC. It's called the Constitution United States. Maybe you've heard of it. >> You've never heard of it? Okay. But uh you get a permit or something. >> Uhhuh. >> Okay. >> Are you driving or walking? You close by? You stay somewhere nearby or >> all the above. >> Well, like I said, I cannot >> He stays firm, insisting he's on public property and doing nothing wrong. But that's just the beginning because right after that they start pressing him for his identity, his reason for filming, and especially the guard gate. And that's when things really start to heat up. >> How you doing today? >> I'm doing all right. NASA security. Can I get your name? >> I didn't give it. >> May I get your name? >> You guys are like the space police. That's funny. >> You You could think of us that way. Am I being detained? Am I under arrest? >> No, you're not under arrest. I just I really want to >> Squires and Crawford. Y'all have a nice afternoon. >> I'm just going to go down here and take some more pictures. >> I'm going to go down here and take some more pictures. >> I'm going to go down here and take some more pictures. >> Okay, >> that's what I'm going to do. >> Uh, can I ask you to do me one favor? What? >> Uh, this now. May I get your name? I introduced myself. I was trying to get your name. >> Um, I didn't get my name. Okay. >> Again, I was just I was asking. I introduced myself. >> I I I would rather not get my name. Okay. I don't want my my my information documented and ended up on some report somewhere. I end up on the terrorist watch list and then can't travel or god knows what. >> I I understand that. Again, I just like to say like to know who I'm talking to. First name. >> You can call me good citizen. >> Good citizen. Okay. Can I ask what you were videotaping? >> Anything I could see? >> Anything you could see. Just in particular, you curious or >> just anything I can see from the public rideway. >> Well, and and you're right. You are on the public rideway. Just again curious as to what you're looking for. If there's any questions I may be able to answer for you. >> No, I think I'm good. Just get just general footage. >> Just general footage. Okay. Uh one thing though, you uh cannot videotape our actual guard shacks and the guards at the guard shacks. >> That is one uh thing that I I asked you not to do. >> You're asking me to do it or is there a policy? >> There there is a policy. You're not actually videotaping the guard. >> That's security procedures. That actually is information that we cannot have out there. >> Okay. Well, I already reported them. >> The cops show up and immediately start pushing, asking his name, his reason for filming, and stressing that the guard gate is a sensitive area. But he doesn't back down, keeping his answers short and firm. And what comes next is the most intense part, when the questions start flying and the pressure ramps up fast. Um, again, sorry, lost my train for a second. >> You were asking me if I took pictures of the guard track. I told you I did. Okay. >> And the two guards that are up there. I think there's three now. I may have gotten all three of them, but I got two for sure. >> Okay. And uh again, may I ask why? >> For my youth. >> I'm sorry. Say that again. >> For my youth. >> For your youth. >> Youth. US. >> Oh, use. I apologize. Use. Okay. >> Uh, what >> again? >> We'll just call it morbid curiosity. What? What use would you be using that for? >> Whatever I use it for. >> Again, I'm again curious. I'm not saying that you're in trouble. I'm not saying that, you know, you're being detained. I'm not giving you any of that. I'm just >> I don't think you have authority to detain me here. >> But you are in a nexus to a NAS facility. So, >> I'll wait till traffic so you can hear me completely. >> Yeah. I I don't think you have the authority to detain me here. >> Okay. Regardless, that's that's not the issue. Yeah, >> I'm I'm trying to figure out why you're videotaping if it's just for your use. >> Again, why that's not something that's very common. So, do you understand why? I have a curiosity of why you're doing that, >> man. I took my granddaughters to NASA here just like 2 weeks ago and we took a bunch of pictures and it was no big deal. >> Okay. I mean, you you seem like a very intelligent man. You you seem like you know what you're doing. >> My ex-wife would disagree with you, but >> Oh, that that's neither here nor there. We're I I understand the humor. I appreciate the humor in it. >> Yeah. >> Uh I appreciate you talking to me right now. However, >> you understand where we have a Wait. >> Yeah. I mean, if if you're not objectionable to it, if you want to step over here a little further away from the street where you can hear, I I'd be glad to step right there. >> That's fine. Right now, we're just I, >> you know, like I said, I think I'm good up to the power lines anyway, but I wouldn't want to test that. >> The questions come faster and they start picking apart his reason for filming piece by piece, but he holds his ground. And when they realize he's not backing down, the cops suddenly switch up, pushing the situation into a whole new level of tension. >> Now, yes, you are on the public rideway, but you are filming the actual gate house. Now, can can you understand why I have a curiosity of why you were doing that? >> Absolutely. And I'll answer your question. Um, I really wasn't filming the gate house. I was filming the sign down there and then security came out, started fussing at me. And of course, at that point, I'm going to film them for my protection. >> And and it is, you're right. I'm not saying that you can't. >> Yeah. >> Now, from our point of view, you were filming the camera and you just told me a few minutes or filming the guard shack. Apologize. >> Yeah. when they came out and started holler at me. I I did film the guardac and the guards and the other the one guard that came out in the rain flicker, Jose, I think his name is or Juan, >> you know, and I I did I explicitly filmed them. >> Okay. >> Yes. Absolutely. >> All right. Now, again, do you understand why I'm curious as to why you and them for the same reason? Why you were filming out here? >> The same reason I'm filming right now is for my protection. But prior to that, just filming the building and stuff, it's it's it's public building. It's NASA. I mean, you know, >> and and I understand there's a lot of curiosity. We get a ton of visits like you just said a few days ago. >> Couple weeks ago. >> A couple weeks ago, my apologies. A couple weeks ago, you and you said your daughter, >> granddaughter, >> granddaughter came and visited NASA. And we we love people. The more public interest we have, the better it is for NASA all the way around. >> Now, back to what I was saying. If they see you filming outside, they're going to approach you. Now, I don't want you to feel like you need to be protected. We're not here as uh for lack of a better term Nazis to you know stomp the little men. That that's not our intention. We're here protection of NASA and NASA property. That that's what our job is. >> Okay. Well, I'm not going to dam damage any property any NASA property or uh NASA stuff. By the way, I'm not armed. I don't have any weapons on me. No pocket knives, no nothing. But I'm going to get my umbrella out here. >> Yeah, feel free to get your umbrella out if I can get it off my belt here. So, did I answer your questions? >> Uh, yeah. I just have a couple more questions. Yeah, it is starting to. Yeah, we're pretty good. >> You know, have you called PD? Have you got PD coming? >> I I do not have uh the local PD coming right now. Do I need to have them coming? >> No. >> Preach and Oh, okay. I apologize. Precinate is in route. >> Oh, I love those guys. >> Okay, awesome. So, have you dealt with them in the past? >> I we'll see who come. >> What? Things start to calm down, at least on the surface, but security is still suspicious, constantly stressing safety and procedure. It feels like it might end right there until a higher ranking official steps in. And the whole situation shifts into a decisive moment. Appreciate your patience. Uh, at this point, I I really would like to know what if you want to turn the camera just so you >> No, I'm good. Okay. I really would like to know specifically what you're going to use the film for. But you're right not to tell me. >> I just for whatever I use it for. That's what I want you. >> And if that's the answer you're going to give me. I >> I'm just having fun with him. >> Would you like a picture? You can ask me. I'll let you take my picture. >> I don't mind. You can take my picture, please. >> I I appreciate you letting us film. >> Yeah. My name is Matthew Gillan. I'm the corporal out here at the physical security support office. Uh, obviously the reason I'm here there was some concern. I don't have a problem with you taking videotape. You're welcome to videotape all day long. It's your right. Uh, and I'm not going to interfere with that. However, when you come out and you're videotaping one of our gates, it raises concern. We got to figure out what's going on and why. Okay. >> You don't have to answer any questions. >> I I think I've already answered his questions, but I'll I'll tell you what I just told him is, you know, I've never had a problem when I film NASA before. >> We're not about not letting people film. We we'll definitely let you film. No problem. Uh but in the past, we've had some folks that have come up and we always like to ask and I might even I think I recognize you from uh Saturn Lane. You came out there one day on Saturn, didn't you? >> I may have. >> Yeah, I think I remember talking with you then. >> I don't think I talked to any I've never had an interaction NASA people before. I've never had a problem with NASA before. I mean, taking pictures many times. I was telling him just a couple weeks ago I was there with my granddaughter. Never been an issue. I didn't expect there'd be an issue here. Not really an issue. They're just probably wondering why you're filming the gate. You know, >> I wasn't filming the gate. I was filming the building and the security came out and got on to me. So, [music] of course, at that point, I was filming the gate, filming the security guards. You know, anybody that that comes up to me and harasses me or give, you know, issues about the filming, I'm going to take pictures of them, you know, for my use, you know, uh cuz you never know [music] what somebody might allege you did or didn't do. You know, video doesn't lie. >> Exactly. But I agree with you. And you're welcome to take all the pictures you want. You, you know, as long as you stay on the the public area, >> which is where I've been. We we stepped up here just to get away from the the rain. >> Yeah. Well, in the traffic. >> And the traffic noise. >> One line that sounds polite, but feels like an ice cold warning. You can film, but we'll be keeping an eye on you. So, tell me, who do you think really holds the power here? Up next, he barely steps up to the bank when a woman suddenly rushes out and starts grilling him. What are you recording for? And from that moment on, every single move he makes is under a microscope. >> Are you with them? >> Huh? >> Are you filming this or what? What are you doing with your camera? >> Uh, I'm recording >> for what? >> Taking pictures >> as a bank. >> Yeah, I was doing my investigation, but then they caught my eye, so I was going to watch them cut down this tree uh for this bank here. Do you work here? >> Yes. >> Oh, okay. What's your name? >> No, I want to know what your name is before I give you my name. >> But I got to make sure that you're the person that I can speak to >> again. Who are you? >> I'm just a guy out here exercising my rights. >> Okay. >> Yeah. >> Do you have a problem with that or >> Well, I have a problem recording my customer. >> Yeah, I was I was checking out your bank here. It's a pretty cool looking bank. >> Okay. >> Yeah. Yep. >> Well, you said you were doing investigation. >> Oh, I can't hear it here. Nice. Then I'm going to come over here. >> All right. Sorry, I couldn't hear you. >> You said you were doing an investigation. >> Yeah. >> And I don't want to get killed. >> Is your money secure at this location? You would say or >> getting more investigation than you are >> on the bank. You go call the cop. >> Wait, why would you call the police? >> Because I You're not giving me information. >> I told you I was going to watch them cut down the tree. And >> that's not going to happen today. >> Oh, it's not? >> Nope. >> Dang. >> So, what's your investigation? >> Well, now it's back on the bank again. Yeah. Just checking it out. Looking at your facility here. >> You have to understand my suspicion of a guy with sunglasses. Hoodie mask. >> But you have sunglasses, too. And you have long hair. >> You have long hair. >> Okay. >> So, I'm just protecting my identification. >> Right. I don't want to be >> Maybe you should put on a mask then like me. >> Okay. >> Do you guys have like a vault at this location or anything? She's talking about my identification and me hiding my face and whatnot and me wearing glasses, but she's wearing glasses as well. Uh yeah, we were just you guys saw that we were just simply looking at this uh tree here. So >> after that tense confrontation, the employee becomes visibly suspicious and clearly upset she can't get the information she wants. And just minutes later, everything shifts fast. The police show up and you can feel it. This is about to turn into a real confrontation. >> How you doing? >> How you doing? >> I called over >> for what? I guess uh the way you look here and you're recording a bank. >> The way I look. >> Yes. You have your face is covered. You have a sunglasses and you're recording a bank financial institution here. Um it's pretty obvious that they would call the police or something like that. >> On on me because I'm recording. >> Well, you're also on their property. >> I'm on their property. >> You were on their property. That's why I'm making contact. >> Where was I on their property? >> This is what I got. >> Oh, so maybe Yeah. Ask them. Ask them. And >> I did already. They called me here to make contact with you because you were on the banks park. >> Oh, I was never on their property. Yeah. >> I'm explaining to you why I got called. >> Oh, okay. So, they came over there and just got you because of that. >> Yeah, I was parked over there. >> Okay. Yeah. No, I'm just checking this tree out and checking out their bank. >> Okay. Right. She said you said you were um doing some kind of investigation. >> Yeah. Did they ask you? >> Ask me to leave what? >> I was never in the parking lot. >> Yeah. I've always been out here. You like this tree though? No, >> I don't. So, do you have an ID on you? >> You don't like this tree? >> Do you have an ID on you? >> An ID? >> Yes, sir. I'm just trying to play a game here that's going to stop real fast. >> A game? So, yeah. I'm So, technically right now I'm in charge because you came over to me though while I'm doing my job. >> Yeah. I have a legal reason to be here. >> I have a legal reason to be here as well. >> Yeah. I'm not on their property or anything. >> Yeah. I have my ID. >> Oh, no. No. >> Can't see your ID. >> Why would you need my ID? So far, I got a You're trust the bank. >> So, from what I've told you, I have never been on their property. So, you're just going to take their word or >> step over here with >> No, I don't want to step on their property. >> Detained right now. >> I am? >> Yeah. >> For what crime? >> I just >> So, without investigating So, without investigating, you're going to detain me? >> Part of an investigation. >> So, you're going to detain me? >> Yes. >> What's your name and badge? >> To you. >> Here's my number. Here's >> Can you verbalize it, please, as per your policy? >> That's not per my policy. >> What's your name and badge? He tries to explain he's on public property, but they keep hammering him about the bank's private property and demanding his ID. The tension is razor thin. And then just seconds later, one single sentence flips the entire situation on its head. >> So, you lied and told him I was on your property. >> Let me let me explain something to you. >> Well, cuz that's what he told me. >> I'm not calling her over here for you. >> Interesting. So, it sounds like you're lying. >> Well, she's right here. You can talk to her. >> She just said no. So, it sounds like you're lying. >> That's not what she told me. So, you told him that I was on your property. >> I said you were recording my customers, but I don't want to be reported. >> But I was never on your property, right? Well, that's an important that's an important question cuz he told me that you told him that I was on your property. Why would I be on your property? >> So, see how she's walking away? That's denial itself. >> I got to explain. >> I'm on public property. >> I'll take care of it. >> So, I'm not being detained. Am I I'm not being detained, am I? See how they just walk away when they get caught in a lie? Listen. >> Caught in a lie. >> Ma'am, you you you called a guy with a with a badge and a gun over here and lied to him. >> That's what >> And you detained me without even investigating first. >> That's part of the investigation. >> You don't just detain anybody you want to. >> You got any questions? >> Do you have any questions? >> I asked the questions I needed to ask already. >> Why'd you detain me, man? >> I just explained it to you. >> You don't detain without knowing. You were trying to You were trying to tell me how an investigation worked and you >> I already know how it works. >> I have you here to talk to you to get your aside. I brought her here because you said Hold on. >> You came over here to detain. >> You asked me a question. You asked me a question, right? Are you going to let me answer? >> Yeah, I'll let you answer. >> Okay. So, you asked me a question. I when I first approached you, I told you exactly why I came over here. So, it's not out of the blue. I just didn't come and bother you. Right. Correct. You were sitting over there. Correct. 30 minutes. My own business report. Me, too. >> Okay. So I got called, I got approached saying that you were over here dressed the way you were on the bank's parking lot recording the bank. Right. That's what I got. >> Yeah. >> So I come I talked to you. I explained to you exactly why I'm talking to you. Right. >> Okay. Told you what she said. You said that's not correct. >> Go ahead. You said it's not correct. I called her over. >> Right. So she can be confronted with what she told me. >> Correct. >> She just confirmed. >> Man, you guys are busy. >> Listen to just confirmed that we both confronted her about what she said. >> She didn't confirm anything. She just walked away. >> That's my point. I told you she called me over because she said you're on a bank record. She came over here and she said >> she wouldn't answer the question of whether she told me you're on the property. >> But why would you detain me though? >> Because well, if you're on their property recording and they don't want >> The whole situation starts to flip fast. The citizen keeps pointing out the contradictions while the other side tries to control the narrative in their favor. And it all ends with a heated back and forth where you can clearly see who's abusing power and who's simply defending their rights. >> Checking out the I thought they were going to cut this tree right here and uh this lady had a and she was coming out asking me questions while I was recording the tree cuz uh there's guys over here. They were going to cut this tree and put some cones down. So I wanted to watch that as well. >> Uh why did the officer just be mindful? >> But why would he come and detain me? 12 back with the phone. >> It doesn't matter. It's the words. Words are still as effective as a >> I'm free to go. >> I'm free to go. I'm free to stay though. That's >> make sure you're not on this property. >> Yeah, but be mindful. >> But why why would you're a sergeant. Why would this officer detain me for no crime? >> He's investigating. >> You can't just detain anybody you want to though. >> Complaint. >> So why why wouldn't you investigate and then come over and detain and or arrest me if you need to? >> Follow the whole circumstance. But you're not being detained. You can go ahead and leave. >> Yeah, if that's what you choose. >> Okay. So, this lady inside of there lied to the officer though and you guys are not doing anything about that. >> I don't know the whole complaint. >> She said I was on their property. >> I guess you can go and complain to the bank. >> I can't go in there. I'm trespasser. Remember? >> Why would I call them? >> You want to complain about >> But they lied to you guys. Putting my life at risk. My life is atrisisk. Dude, when people call people with guns and badges, your life is at risk. It is. Officers do bad things. People's do >> So you're telling me officers don't do bad things? >> I said, "No, you're you're saying that." >> You said that's my opinion. >> That is your opinion. >> Like you don't believe it. Cuz if you believed it, you'd be like, "Yeah, you're right. >> Believe every officer does bad things." >> I never said every officer, >> but but they do. >> You didn't say several officers. You like said officers in general. >> But I said people also do bad things as well. >> That's true. >> Yeah. And you could see >> I wish you guys had something on your heads that said good officer, bad officer. >> That would help us, too. >> Yeah. With people. Exactly. It goes both ways, right? Yep. >> Yeah. >> All right, man. We're going to get out of here. All right. All right. Take care. >> Yeah. >> He says something that really makes you think. One dishonest phone call is enough to put an innocent person in danger. In the end, they walk away, but the frustration lingers because apparently all it takes is a camera in your hand to be treated like a criminal.
