I don't want to get hurt. >> When citizens rights meet police authority on the street, everything can change in just a few minutes. And this time, the camera captured it all. >> I want you to stand over there. >> You told me about putting me back in my damn truck. I know my rights, dude. >> I don't want to get hurt, and I don't want you to get hurt. >> It's a public easement. >> You write a ticket for a vehicle that you think is illegally parked, you do not need anybody's ID. >> That's right. >> You write a ticket for the vehicle and put it on >> That's right. >> When citizens understand the law, the wrong decisions made by law enforcement can come at a very high price. Two independent journalists begin filming right outside a correctional facility, but just minutes later, the first questions from prison staff start to make the atmosphere tense. What happens when the right to film in public is suddenly called into question? >> Hey, man. >> Do y'all have a reason for being here? >> Yeah, we independent journalists doing a story on the correctional facility here. >> And this is uh not very many prisons can you get up close to like this. And uh I've never seen one before. >> Yeah, I know. That's why we always have to worry. We have a problem with people throwing packages >> They're doing what? The car went by. >> packages and stuff out here. That's why we confront anyone who's up here. >> Hey. I don't blame you. Yeah, do what you got to do. >> We're not going to throw any things over >> No, we don't have no >> I don't want to end up in there. >> Right. >> Okay. >> It's really cool. How many Can you tell us something like how many inmates are here? That stuff's shiny. >> Brand new fence, everything. >> Oh, yeah? Cool. >> Can we have a tour? Inside? >> No, you'd have to make arrangements up there. At the admin building up here. >> All right, right. >> That's probably who you need to see. >> What's his name again? >> It's Krauth. >> Krauth? >> Krauth, k r a u s e. [music] >> Krauth, okay. >> And then like I was saying, y'all might want to check in with the admin building so they know what you're doing here. >> Is there somebody coming there? >> Well, we're um >> That's the captain. >> Yeah, we on the side of We on the we on the side of the road so we don't need to get permission. I can't hear you, sir. We can film anything from right where we at right now. >> You got it. >> Right on, baby. Do what you do. You can't control us right here, baby. Can't nobody tell us what to do from right here. >> After a few minutes of what seemed like a fairly normal conversation with staff at the facility, the atmosphere outside the prison remained relatively calm. But just moments later, everything began to change. A call appeared to have been made and from a distance, an officer could be seen approaching the scene. >> Yeah, okay. I know they did. They put it They They parked behind it a while ago. Oh, you having a good day? >> No, not really. >> No? Why? >> They act up. >> Huh? >> They act up. >> They act up? Oh, man. You got to hate that. So, they're they coming? Huh? >> You don't know? I don't know. >> You don't know? >> They called and said >> I guess. I was just going to wait on. Yeah, he didn't say nothing man. He said well you can't be here filming like this we can. This is a public property right here. Yeah, so he can't make a stop. Yeah, walked off mad and walked pretty fast so we figured he called the sheriff but sometimes they do sometimes they don't. This ain't our first rodeo. I can't hear you. I'm I'm right here daddy. YOU GOT TO BE STUPID FOR TOUCHING ME. I might be I don't know. You know that's a lawsuit right? I want you to stand over here. Just like you talked about putting back in my damn truck. I know my rights dude. I don't want to get hurt and I don't want you to get hurt. Okay, well I can't do that. I got a call out here to see you didn't get it. This ain't a traffic stop though buddy. You know better. Look I got a call out here. I'm on a call all right. You you don't push me though. You don't do that. Yes sir I'm not I don't want anybody to get hurt. I want to be When the officer stepped closer and made physical contact with the person filming the atmosphere became more tense than ever. The cameraman loudly objected claiming that his rights had just been violated. However, that was only the beginning because after that moment the confrontation between the two sides not only failed to calm down, but quickly escalated into an even more intense situation. >> Okay, all right. You you What are you doing now? >> doing nothing illegal. >> Okay, okay, okay. You're okay. >> Yeah, I'm I'm great, man. >> Okay, all right. >> You're not going to be great when I sue you for touching me. >> All right, you can't be doing that. >> unwanted touch. That's unwanted touch. >> You can't use the >> I'm on public property. I can cuss all day long. It's called free speech. >> It's called disorderly conduct. >> I know better. I know my rights. >> language. >> my rights. You can retain. I know my rights. >> You're wrong, and I'm trying to explain to you >> I'm not wrong. >> So, just don't cuss. >> I know better. I know better. I know better. >> All right, I'm trying to tell you the statute. >> I know it. I know it. I know it. >> talk over me. >> Cuz you're a dumbass, that's why. >> Look, look, sir. >> You touched me. That's what pissed me off. You shouldn't have touched me. >> I'm sorry. I don't want you to get hurt. >> I don't care about WHAT YOU WANT. I'M in control of my safety. >> All right. Well, I don't want to >> unwanted touch, and I can press charges on your dumbass. >> Well, you do whatever you need to do, sir. I just want you to be safe, okay, buddy? >> Touch me. [ __ ] stupid, man. You should have never touched me. >> Now, I got to call out here. >> Call for service. Do your job, then. >> Okay. >> Investigate. >> Okay. >> You see what You see what we're doing? That's what we've been doing the whole time. >> Yeah. Hey, John, what are you doing? >> Illegal protected activity. You're going to push me. >> Sir, you keep going back to the >> You Yeah, because that pissed me off, and you had no right to touch me. >> sir. I'm trying to get YOU >> YOU'RE SORRY MY ASS. You weren't sorry when I told you TO STOP THREE TIMES. >> Once we got over here, we okay now? >> Three times. No, we're not okay. No, we're not okay because you touched me. >> Okay. All right, that's fine. All right, and you don't want to give me any information? >> not getting nothing? >> I didn't do nothing wrong. >> Whatever, man. I ain't hiding. I'm parked on the side of the road. >> And you understood why I did that. I just explained it to you. >> You was fine until you put your hands on me, sir. >> Sir, you can say that >> name and badge number? >> I don't have a badge. man. >> number. >> Yeah, I don't have an ID number. >> What's your name, then? >> It's right here. >> Little. So, you don't even know what side of the road it's on? >> No, I don't cuz I mean >> You don't wear it everyday? >> Sometimes I wear this [ __ ] to work, sometimes I don't. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I don't work everyday. >> So, now you can get your dumb ass right back in your car and let me do what I came here to do. >> Okay, that's fine, then. >> The person filming repeatedly insisted that they were engaged in a legally protected activity while accusing the officer of overstepping his authority in trying to control them. And just as the tension seemed ready to explode, another figure arrived at the scene, quickly changing the dynamics of the confrontation. >> You're going to hear from me touching me like that. >> I don't care. Listen. I'M IN CONTROL OF MY I'M IN CONTROL OF MY SAFETY. I see that truck. That's what they're supposed to do. I'm a pedestrian at this point. >> Sir, you're on the you're on you're in the roadway. If you're over than 25 ft, you're out of the roadway. You can't be >> I'm not going out there 25 ft. You just did that, not me. You was on that side. He seen you first. >> I know. >> And if he can't see my big ass wrong. >> Look, sir. Sir. >> Just get back in your car. >> Okay. All right. Yes, sir. Have a good day, sir. >> Yeah, kick rocks. Touching me. You're crazy. I'll chop your damn arm. >> What's going on, guys? >> How's it going? >> Hey, pretty good. >> It's a beautiful day. >> Hey, you can't ask for better in North Carolina, right? >> Yep. I guess you know what we're doing. >> Yeah. What's the What's the What's the name of your guys' group? Cuz I I've seen videos of you guys in North Carolina. >> Just look on YouTube and hit North Carolina dude, you'll find us. >> And put the Franklin Correctional. >> Did you guys Did you guys do Were you guys at Wilson PD? Uh I'm not going to tell you anything. >> Let me tell you, Little told me out here a while ago, dude, he pushed me three [ __ ] times. >> Okay. I'm not I'm not going to do that. >> No, no, no, I understand that. He did I'm telling you dude that is a train wreck waiting to happen. He had me I was pissed. >> contact with you. Just make sure you guys are out of the roadway. Be safe. And uh have a nice road. Just be safe and uh >> That's all he had to say. That's all he had to say dude and he and he shoved me three [ __ ] times. >> Constitutionally you guys are fine. I would never >> with that and he's going to I'm telling you dude he messed up. >> I'm going to talk to him. I'm going to talk to him right now. >> He messed up. >> Now if it would help a lot we won't file a complaint if he comes and apologizes. >> All right, I'll go talk to him. I I can't guarantee you that's that's his decision. I can't >> a lot of complaints he might want to. I mean that's out of control. Nobody should conduct themselves like that. >> I know. >> Nobody. >> We're all different human beings though. >> That that that still don't make it right. >> that. I understand you're you're absolutely >> We were I was cordial being cordial to the guards here and everything and he come out there trying to give me drugs. >> and that's great. But most of the time they don't have people who are that cordial so that's that's all that matters. >> It wouldn't have been >> When another officer arrived at the scene the tense atmosphere began to ease slightly. However, for the group filming the story was far from over. Just seconds later a new development emerged when a higher ranking officer stepped into the conversation. >> What you guys are doing is is absolutely you guys are 100% right about your rights. What's up LT? >> Good. Good. Yeah, we're 10-4. >> Yes, sir. >> What's your name, sir? >> You don't have a name? Oh, you're failing to identify. Another [ __ ] I swear dude this county's reeked with them. Yeah. See See what I'm saying dude? That's unprofessional. Why Why do that? Why not Why not Did you state your name? >> Uh I'm Deputy Sheriff E213. This is my zone. I was called out here because there was guys videotaping. >> see what I'm saying? All we did is ask him for his name. >> Did y'all come back >> I'll go try to make contact with them and like I said, just try to stay out of the roadway so nothing happens, but you guys are good. Thanks, sir. >> Yeah. >> As the officers gradually leave the scene, what remains is not just a dispute on the side of the road, but serious allegations about whether citizens' rights were just violated. The answer perhaps is something only time will reveal. Up next, a group of filmmakers led by NC Tower Hunter appeared near the Ford factory in Detroit, but just minutes after they began recording, a patrol car pulled up behind them. The biggest question at that moment was, why were they being noticed so quickly? >> What? Something wrong with that? >> Uh actually, while you're on the burm, yeah, you're on private property. >> Yeah. >> So, you guys will have to be leaving. >> Bet. >> Okay, well. >> Make him make us leave. >> Uh I can't make you >> Okay, there you go. You shut the [ __ ] up then. >> All right. >> Typical ally. >> Yeah. Just shut up then. Don't even come out here and talk to us. Can't do nothing about it. >> Sure, I can't do anything about it, but I can call Brownstown. >> Oh, no. >> Ally. >> Why would you do that, man? >> Okay, can I ask you why you got >> Why would you do that? Why would you do that though? What? >> Private property. >> Okay. I I don't see no private property signs. Well, because you engaged me and I came over to talk. Right? >> Sounds good. >> It's all on record. These cameras are going right now. >> This business over here gets turned nose into what we doing and they going to end up regretting the hell out of that. Just stick around check it out. And yes, I know I sound like I guess there was too many bands given when I was in Michigan. >> What he said. He said, "Y'all going to have to go across the street. I'm like haha. Yeah, no we're not. I said bet. >> Good luck with that. >> Bet. >> Behind you. >> Guys Good. May I help you with something? >> Nope, we don't need any help. >> Did you You walk up to everybody and ask them if they need help? Really? Total strangers, you walk up to them and ask everybody? >> You got ice water? >> Who's on your property? >> I shouldn't have >> Who's on your property? >> Nobody's on your property. >> Don't Oh my god. Oh my god, really? >> After a heated argument with employees near the factory, the atmosphere at the scene began to grow more tense by the minute. While waiting, the back-and-forth exchanges continued to escalate, drawing the attention of people nearby. And then what they had expected finally happened. Police vehicles began to arrive. >> I can't do nothing. Don't make yourself look like you're trying to hurt somebody, that's just usual. >> Right on. Let me get in here. >> You should You should give your name and badge number, dude. >> Oh, he didn't identify. >> No, he ain't going to identify. >> want to identify? You want to be YouTube famous? You tyrant? Huh? You want to be YouTube famous? I can make you YouTube famous. You just don't know. I got another right here family member, guys. We got another right here family member. Yeah, drive on off. Go on. You ain't doing [ __ ] while I'm standing right here. Just bite your tongue. But there's no reason why you don't identify to somebody that's in the public. No reason. No reason. What? >> They just don't want you blocking the driveway. >> WE WEREN'T BLOCKING THE FREAKING DRIVEWAY, CUZ. CAN YOU identify yourself, sir? Why Why won't you identify yourself? Answer me that. Can you answer Can you answer me that? I'm giving you another chance. Do you not want to identify yourself? I'm trying to be nice here, cuz. Is there a reason why you don't? Isn't So, did the captain tell you not to identify yourself? And it's your policy to identify? You think it's the first time we've done this? Huh? That's a tyrant right there, guys. That guy right there. I don't I can't read his name badge. Borg. A Borg or some [ __ ] I don't know what it says. He won't identify himself. And we got an audi- we got an audience down there. This tyrant Hey, this tyrant right here won't identify himself. Oh, no. No. >> Won't identify? That's He's Borg from Star Trek. >> Accusations of avoiding accountability began to surface, and the atmosphere at the scene became heavier than ever. However, that still wasn't the most intense moment of the story. Just minutes later, when the conversation shifted to the vehicles parked nearby, an entirely new argument erupted. >> Now, these guys are doing fine. >> Yeah, these guys These guys are cool. They They showed up as backup. >> We got a um Backup to the backup. Who's the supervisor? Is that Is that the super over there? >> No, he's over there. >> Who's in charge? >> over there. >> Sergeant. Who else is in charge? Anybody else? >> Sergeant Cox. He's He's the He's the road patrol supervisor. >> And why don't you have a name badge on? >> Oh, cuz I lost mine. >> Okay, what's your name? >> Purple Dave Jones. Dave Jones. >> 218. I'm sorry. Uh possibly. >> You know I know you're a detective, right? >> What? Look, all these Y'all want to be YouTube stars today? >> Come on. Does anyone have any cars parked over there that they can move right now? Ask them right now. >> No. It don't matter if we do or >> No, we're not we're not Nobody ever went on their property. >> We know how to We know how to We don't need to write. Just tell them to shut the hell up. >> hey, nobody ever blocked the driveway. >> Did you learn anything? >> You learned what freedom is. >> Yeah. >> If >> You GOT AN EDUCATION TODAY, DIDN'T YOU? RALEIGH. >> We brought the neighbors together. >> Yeah, look at Look at that. >> Getting to know each other. >> Yeah. Oh, he's talking [ __ ] now about blocking the damn sidewalk. >> Bam, sergeant. >> Bam that [ __ ] >> Bam with your orders and your directives. >> He's talking about stop blocking the damn road. >> blocking [ __ ] Nobody blocking [ __ ] you fat ass sergeant. >> Talking about block blocking the [ __ ] road. >> [ __ ] right here, fat sergeant. >> GET OUT OF MY [ __ ] CAR. YOU DON'T DESERVE THAT CAR. >> Some officers argued that the vehicles appeared suspicious and needed to be checked. While the auditors insisted they had not violated any regulations. And just when it seemed the exchange would remain only a debate, a new move from the police made the situation more serious as the issue of handling the vehicles and the authority to inspect them was suddenly put on the table. >> I tried I tried to get them in touch in contact with the property owner, but they had no luck. >> Don't put your hands on me. >> So, what's the problem? >> We're investigating a couple of suspicious vehicles parked on >> Suspicious, yeah yeah. It's not private property. It's the freaking easement. >> Who owns this property? >> The easement The state owns it. >> How do you know that, sir? >> I know because I got a map on my phone that tells me. So, do do >> Whose your vehicle? >> It don't matter whose vehicle it is. >> This is your vehicle. Can I speak with you about it? >> It don't matter whose it is. >> Who owns the vehicle? >> It's my vehicle. >> What's your name, sir? >> It doesn't matter. >> How do I know it's your vehicle? >> It doesn't matter. >> It doesn't matter. >> Dude, I got to pee. >> Look at these Look at these Look at these tires out here. >> gang members. >> Look at these tires. Look. >> The cars that are illegally parked. >> Look at these tires. >> They're illegally >> This dude walked right up in my face and told me to >> Yeah. Yeah. [ __ ] >> You understand that? You understand what I'm saying? >> Cuz y'all butt hurt. Just because y'all butt hurt. All of these cops are butt hurt. Like this. This is public property. It's a public easement. >> You can write a ticket for a vehicle that you think is illegally parked. You do not need anybody's ID. >> That's right. >> You write a ticket for the vehicle and put it on the >> That's right. That's how that works. That's how that works. >> butt hurt cops. >> Yeah, they're butt hurt. >> It takes nine road cops to write one citation. >> Right. Butt hurt cops. >> That That's something that ain't even illegally parked. >> Right. Well, what they don't understand is public easement laws. Anything this side of the telephone poles is a public easement. Public property. >> A fire hydrant. >> And if it were private >> Probably they would have proper signage saying no parking, no trespassing, private property. It's like a private drive. >> Let's Let's look at these Hey. Hey, board. >> You know they call Tyler Turkey police for a reason. >> you looking at my socks. I seen you scoping out my socks, man. They pretty They nice. They nice, ain't they? Yeah, they are. We don't hate cops. We hate tyrant cops. >> I hate tyrant cops. Cops that don't want to follow the law. >> Exactly. >> And don't want to abuse >> to abuse their authority right now. >> And don't want to identify. Board. Yeah, board. That's you. That means you. That means you're a tyrant. >> That makes you a lawsuit. >> That means you're a tyrant. >> No, it's not. If it was private property, there'd be proper signage saying it's private. This is a public easement. >> No arrests were made, but the confrontation left many big questions.
