Yes sir, you got a you got a guy standing in public conducting a first amendment protected activity. So what are you going to do? You going to hurt me? Are you going to harm me? >> You're going to walk up with me with that in my face? >> me? >> I didn't walk up on you. But I'm telling you to get off of the property now. No evidence, no charges, just pressure, threats, and orders that sound like the law, but are actually unlawful. Unless I'm suspected committing a crime. They just scared of someone just having a camera. But this where you and your knowledge, you said you were a lieutenant. I'm trying to get your ID. No, you'll arrest me and I'll get paid. That's the bottom line. I've already talked to him on the phone. You're wearing captain bars. These officers forget one thing. Every time they abuse their power, they're signing their own sentence. Just one camera and one man standing outside a bank. But in less than a minute, everything suddenly turns into suspect talk. You won't believe how this story starts. How you doing? Hi. What's going on? 113, go ahead. Yeah, I was wanting at the bank. You got a suspect in the description. Suspect? >> Yeah. Of what? I'll explain it to you. So there's a guy or the bank called said you were out here filming the bank and cars back here. They were just kind of wondering what you were doing. I was just recording in public. Okay. Peacefully. I haven't even spoke with nobody. Perfect. Is that I heard you say suspect. I'm like suspect of what? So No, like just making sure that you're not like casing the bank or anything like that. Come on, man. >> Hey, crazier things happen. And and I I don't think those that's not even a black man's crime, man. They would do it like a liquor store or gas station for $20 before they actually go to like a bank. [music] Right. You know what I'm saying? I'm just recording, you know. It was cold this morning. It got a little better. It still got a little chill to it, but this a little bit more of my weather if you got to walk. You know what I'm saying? >> Got you. But yeah, man, I'm not on nobody's property. I'm just just recording in public if that's okay. And who are you, sir? I'm Lieutenant Goff with the Palm Beach Police Department. A lieutenant who, sir? Goff. Do you have a business card? Not with me, no. You don't have a business card? Okay. But And you you you're in the sheriff's department? >> with the Palm Beach Police Department. Okay, yes sir. Um do you have your ID I can see real quick and I'll get you on your way. Here. Right here. Okay. Do you have an ID I can see real quick and then I can get you on your way. Did I commit a crime? Hm? Did I commit a crime? You were called in as a suspicious person. I have the right to ID you, man. But but but for for what crime though, sir? You were called in as a suspicious person. I have the right to ID you, okay? Would you like Can you read this for me real quick, please, sir? Maybe this will help you out. This will help you out. Yes, sir. What's going to help you out is giving me your ID and I What seemed like a casual routine conversation quickly turns tense when the officer suddenly labels him a suspect. From that moment on, it's no longer just small talk. It becomes a real standoff where one more sentence could blow everything up into a major incident. Just trying to show you this. You 25 with me at the front of the bank. The right of the people to be secure in their houses, papers Mhm. and effects Mhm. Any reasonable ticketable suspicion of a crime to to to to get my ID? I can identify you right here. Okay, I just identified as good citizen. Okay. If if if that's okay. >> That doesn't work for work for me. That doesn't work for you. No, I need a government name, ID, all that good Oh, you one of those. This is something so basic. Right. I agree with you. It's really basic. Yeah, yeah, I mean Just hand over the ID and we'll get you on your way. Yes sir, you got a you got a guy standing in public conducting a first amendment protected activity. You know, holding the Constitution. By a bank. Called you in. >> But but listen, sir, they don't mean anything. You supposed to go educate them like, "Hey, he's not doing anything wrong. He's in public. He has a right to record." >> I was standing in public. Go ask them. Did you want to go speak with them first? One of the other units here I was That that would have been good. I waited for you to get here. Yeah, I was just standing in public, sir. I was actually standing right there. Is it if that's if that's a if that's like a public alleyway? Just right here. Wow, man. You must do this a lot. Is there a bonus for getting the ID? Is it? There's no bonus. So why do cops push it so hard to get the ID? You're just talking to a good citizen, sir. You're a public servant. I'm a private citizen. Unless I'm suspected committing a crime. They just scared of someone just having a camera. But this where you and your knowledge, you said you were a lieutenant. You supposed to just come and educate them, sir. The atmosphere suddenly gets heavy. The man stays calm, but he keeps pointing out what feels off about the officer's approach, turning the exchange into more of a gotcha moment than a routine check. Then someone else shows up and that's when the situation truly shifts. How you doing, sir? Good, how are you? I'm I'm fine, man. Nice firm handshake, man. So what is your what is your your shield? Like what is your rank? Uh operations commander. Commander? >> Yeah. Yes, sir, man. >> How are you doing? My first name is Troy. I'm doing okay. Uh well, I thought I'm just in public recording conducting a constitution protected activity. I haven't even spoke with anyone. Yeah. I've been standing in public. Has anybody come out and spoke to you? Nobody Nobody said nothing to me, sir. So this gentleman pulled up. I was standing I was I was walking. There's no sidewalk. He told me to come to him. I did. And I I shared with him just what I'm sharing with you. What I requested for you, he's demanding my ID and I asked him did I commit a crime? He said, "You haven't committed a crime." He said, "You just got called in for suspect suspicious activity." And I'm like, "Sir, I'm just recording. I'm I'm I'm holding the con I'm asking do you Would you like to read the Fourth Amendment?" No, he don't want to read it. I'm sure he don't even know it cuz you wouldn't be demanding my ID. Fourth Amendment is for me to be secure my person, papers, houses, and effects. And I'm very peaceful, sir. So do you have a business card on you? I don't, but I'd be happy to like repeat anything you need. Unfortunately, as you can see like I'm supposed to be sitting at my desk doing Do you have like a pen on you and a piece of paper? I don't even have that. Not even in the car? No, I'm supposed to be sitting at my desk typing right now. >> Well, for the record for my camera, can you state your name, your rank, and his for me one more time cuz he's he's acting a little Yeah, so I'm Operations Commander Troy Shedel and that's Patrol Lieutenant Nick Goff. And do you have a badge? I appreciate you being professional so far, man. You just never know how these turn out, man. There's no more of that aggressive pressuring approach. Instead, the tone becomes calmer and more measured like someone stepping in to put out the fire before it goes too far. At this point, it seems like things are cooling down. But then the commander says something that shocks a lot of people. This whole suspicious person situation was only one wrong step away from turning into a serious incident. You know, I you know, I I just I I you know, when I do that because I show people lawful orders and unlawful orders. >> Sure. Cuz the whole thing is and before you get out of here, sir, can I please get the call for service number for here, the CFS? Mhm. Please. That's why I was wondering like why did he pull you to the side? I was looking for you guys' body cameras cuz I'm just going to pull the body cam footage. So when you're talking secrecy and all that I I I I I don't get it. Right. And there's nothing secret about it per se because it's going to be recorded as you pointed out. So if you foyer that Absolutely. You'll know exactly what we said. Absolutely. 13705 13705 Is nothing in front of those? Five. Two, there you go. There you go. And and the thing is this. I really shared with him, man. It When you leave, I want to just share something with him and uh and then we we all just 10-8. Sure. Yeah. All right, you can 10-8 and I just have a brief conversation. He'll probably share it with you. When we get out of here. Would you like to inform him of the Yeah, yeah. Okay, so All I was talking about with the commander is you'll you'll find out when you If you don't mind me just standing right here. No, if you can stand right here, you look better on camera. That's the first time I've heard that. So all I was saying to him is like uh whatever he spoke to them about Yes, sir. Um it was exactly the concerns I think that we were both both alluding to is like it's a bank, so they're concerned, but they feel better now. So they're they've been educated and informed. Sorry, the traffic's very loud. You're fine. >> educated and informed and then the other half of that is that we just passed along some education and information to you, which is as you pointed out, you're not doing anything wrong as long as you don't go onto the parking lot property No intention. >> over there like close to the windows or anything like that that disturbs No intention, man. then you are just perfectly golden. Yes, sir. And that's it. Now what? And what I needed to share with him The commander tries to wrap it up peacefully, admitting the man didn't do anything wrong. But the more you listen, the more you realize one small misstep could have turned it into something huge. And just as he's about to leave, the man starts throwing out these strange questions like he's testing whether the police actually understand the law or if they're just running on habit. I'm not sure what you're trying to ask me. You're trying to make me do a crime. >> What time would it be? 27 minutes to 7:00 p.m., what time would it be? I'm not going to entertain that. I think you already know the answer to that one. I mean, is there like a a question related to what we're talking about here? No, if I can if I can share that with you, I didn't even get to get there with him because when y'all get these phone calls I'm aware that you have a task list you got to go down. And with me, and I deal with law enforcement all around, I deal with so many law enforcement when they go through their task list, it make you feel like a robot to me. So, to take you out of robot mode and reset mode, I like to ask thinking questions, man. He just just small critical thinking questions, and I tell people share them. Share them with your fellow officer, man. I think they kind of they they just great thinking questions, man. The the the other question I was going to ask you is, and these are just thinking questions, what is 550 divided by two? 550 divided by what? Two. I don't know half of five is 250 and half of whatever you said. Yeah, these are just thinking questions. Whenever you do look it up, pass it along, man. These are thinking questions, man. That's all. We can just wrap up out of here. 10-8 and just stay safe out there, man. >> to try. And just have another I would still have another conversation with the guy. Maybe after you see the video, you can probably see and feel it a little bit more and >> Is there like a like a channel I would go to to watch or anything like that where you where you post your information? You to me, I think you was doing an A+ would not you down to a B is when you gave me that unlawful order tell me don't follow you, man. But you're going to find the video. In the end, he walks away, but he can't hide the uneasy feeling as if this isn't really over, just temporarily paused [music] waiting for the next escalation. Up next, he walks into a lot full of government vehicles with surveillance cameras everywhere. But here's the thing, he's carrying his own camera, too. And from that moment on, nothing feels normal anymore. We're at the Washington Township Public Works and Vehicle Maintenance Lot. I noticed their [music] sign says Notice This property is protected by surveillance cameras. I got one, too. So, they got a camera, I got a camera. We all got cameras. Let's check out some of these trucks. We got our body cam on today in case any police come along. Got to got to start being smart about that, I'll tell you. Ooh, that's a fancy [clears throat] looking one right there, isn't it? Look at that. They all got good tires on them. That's right, Jim fam. I'm back to looking in windows. Ooh, a little fire department truck. It's like somebody was painting yellow somewhere. All right, how you doing, I'm all right. Ooh, they're double-sided, guys. I bet the other side is where the sheriff cars are. That's where we're going. All right. Nice looking place, though. Wish I had a shop like that. Oh, wait a minute. I do. It's just smaller. >> [laughter] >> I guess I'm a little jaded cuz some fellow told me I live at home in my mom's basement. Really pissed me off cuz I didn't grow up with parents. So, F that guy. It all seems like a normal filming session at first. But the deeper he goes, the stranger the atmosphere gets. And just as his curiosity draws him further inside, someone suddenly shows up and bluntly asks, "What are you doing back here?" From that moment on, the whole story flips, words get harsher, and the space between them closes fast. Roll it down. Roll it down. No? Are you scared? All right, I'll leave you alone. If you're scared, I'll leave you alone. He said he was scared, guys. I'm not here to try to pump no fear in nobody. You all know me better than that. Maybe this guy ain't afraid. Hello. Hey, what are you doing back here? I'm recording your cars. Okay. Checking out tires. >> You're in a secured area. Well, the sign said public. Public works. Okay. Here. >> Okay, I came through that side. I looked at their cars first. I noticed these cars around here. I'll show you the sign. >> touch me. Come on. >> That's not right. Don't do that. Don't do that. That's not right. What are we doing, fellas? Hey, leave that open. As as soon as you understand what I'm doing here, I'm going to search that car. >> No, you're not. Oh, yeah, I am. So, you're in a secured area. It's clearly posted that it's not open to the public. No, I came through that side. It said public. And I walked around the corner and there was no more signs. We're telling you that it's clearly posted right there. You need to leave. Okay, I'll tell you what. I'll be reasonable and if the signage is different on this side than the other side, then I I understand that. Hey, don't do that. That's what I wanted to show you. You came up with me with a camera in my face. Yeah. So, what are you going to do? You going to hurt me? Are you going to harm me? >> up with me with that in my face. I didn't do anything. But I'm telling you to get off the property now. I was walking to him. >> I'm talking to you. Okay, that there's no reason to behave like that, mister. You can pronounce it. It's 10 letters long. Get off the property. >> Okay, do you have any identifying numbers that go along with that? 238 238, okay. I think you made a big mistake. >> We'll show you the sign. Okay, I'm going I said I was willing to look at the sign, did I not? Yeah, just walk with us, you're fine. >> Well, get him away from me. You're okay. No, I'm not okay. I don't want you behind me. You don't want me walking up on >> don't want you behind me. This is going to turn into a big After just a few exchanges, >> [music] >> the tone shifts into an interrogation and the pressure ramps up as they insist this is a secured area and demand that he leave immediately. Moments later, things jump to a whole new level. Words like trespass, get off the property now, and identify yourself start flying signaling that an even bigger confrontation is coming. You're pissing me off. Get the [ __ ] away from me right now. >> Sir, YOU'RE ON PRIVATE PROPERTY NOW. >> THIS IS PUBLIC PROPERTY. It's trespass. No. Okay. Hey, hey, before you trespass me, call Rob Streck. Call Rob Streck. Get your [ __ ] hands off me, guy. I'm walking. I'm not walking fast enough for you. You have to put your hands on me. Baker, stop. >> Listen, right there. No unauthorized vehicles or personnel beyond this point. Well, you're adjoined to the other parking lot. You understand how it happened. All of this was wrong. Let's get the process started. This guy and this guy. Now you're on private property. We need your ID. >> I'm on the other side of the You're being trespassed [music] from this No, I'm telling you one more time. Call Rob Streck. >> Sir. You are on private >> Before you make a huge mistake. I just did this yesterday. This is Montgomery County. Sir, we need to see your ID. I've already talked to him on the phone. Go ahead and get your ID. No, you'll arrest me and I'll [music] get paid. That's the bottom line. I've already talked to him on the phone. You're wearing captain bars. How do you not know about yesterday and the day before? >> Sir, go ahead and get your ID out. >> I don't have ID. You're going to have to show us who you are. Okay, I just asked you. Go ahead and get his name. Name, date of birth, please. We'll do a trespass. No, you're not. >> that. We'll do it verbally. Listen to what I'm trying to say to you. Are you not going to listen to me? Is there not even in the realm of possibility that I'm telling the truth? >> to get your name. No, you don't. What's your name? You're on private property. You trespassed on private property. >> Listen, okay, let's try this a different way. If he has to call me at home again and apologize anymore and tell me I'm allowed to come down and inspect the condition of these vehicles, I don't think he's going to be very happy. And you're part of Montgomery County. Okay, listen. I understand the signs are different on this side than the other side. You understand how it happened. What is so wrong about what happened? How is it criminal? How is it immoral? How how is it anything? Huh? No, absolutely not. The more they talk, the tenser it gets because one side is trying to wrap up the procedure as fast as possible while the other sees it as a clear sign of abuse of power. And then comes a sharp twist. He suddenly pulls out a business card name-dropping someone with real authority. And that's when the confrontation hits its hottest point. You tell him Ty Glennon from Gem City News is here. Would you like my card? We just went through this. You're you're you're hammered, dude. You're hammered. You were going to hurt me. I know you were going to hurt me. Okay. [music] And that's why I do this. So, this this is who you are. >> Limelight you guys. >> Ty? Yes. Okay, Ty. >> No, no. Hold on now. That's my my business [music] card, Gem City News. I'm known as Ty Glenn. Okay, Ty. >> Okay, but [music] Rob Streck will handle this. Either you can call him or I can. Ty. Yeah. What's your goal? Do you think I'm playing with you? Do you think I'm lying to you? What is your goal today? What do you want? I just wanted to make sure you guys are all running on good tires, right? I would if he'd roll down the window, I was going to ask him if he was going to or coming from, and either way, [music] please wear a seat belt. It's the number one killer of cops. Thank you. You did your job. >> You're also verbally trespassed from the property. If you come here again, we will arrest you if you cross this fence. Do you understand? Man, you're making a mistake, Captain. Okay. What's your name? >> Let's go now. What's your name? Are you refusing to ID? Don't come up Are you refusing to ID? You come across here, you're going to get arrested. >> Are you refusing to ID? I already said my name and my rank. Thanks. Okay. I'll be seeing you soon. Tyrant. Hey, hey, and one more thing. Hey! My grievances? I'm addressing my grievances right now. At this point, it feels exactly like being backed into a corner. And the scariest part is with just one wrong answer, everything could instantly shift from an argument to handcuffs. But this still isn't the end because right after that, he doesn't let it go. He comes back to do what most people only think about but never dare to do, file a direct complaint. I'll wait outside. I'll wait in this little area for the piece of paper. I'll wait outside. For a complaint form. I'll get you a complaint Okay. Boy, you guys should be proud of yourselves. It's going to come undone. Hey, you guys got to be the ones that tell him. You tell him that that that he tricked me and and that you drew first blood. I just went through this with your with your sheriff and he is your [ __ ] boss, you bunch of [ __ ] Either he lied to me on the phone or he's going to eat you guys alive. >> [snorts] >> Start at the the mix up. >> Give me the paper and let me go. I'm going to [ __ ] explain something to you, pal. >> to you. Watch the language. >> don't have to watch the language. It's not against the law. Do you want me to explain this to you or not? Go ahead and explain it. Start at the top. I need your name. No, I don't [music] have to do it with my name. Then how are you going to file your complaint? I'm going to take it home. I'm going to fill it out. I'm going to call the sheriff, just like I did downtown. You guys better ask somebody cuz you just started World War III, dumb ass. All right, guys. [music] Captain Justice is coming. He leaves furious, ending with a heavy warning. This is no longer just a misunderstanding. It's an incident that could lead to serious consequences, and he won't let it get buried. Citizens can sue police under Section 1983 when their rights are violated. Officers who break the law may face damages and be disciplined or fired. A civilized society isn't measured by how many cameras there are or how many police are on the streets. It's measured by how we treat each other when no one has committed a crime. Hey everyone, what do you think about this situation?
