Using the patrol car's PA system, the deputy ordered the driver to pull over. But what he >> So, by the way, driving too slow is, I think, one of the top 10 sign cues for impairment in driving behavior. Driving too fast is not, but driving too slow, 10 mph or more under the speed limit, is a sign of potential uh uh intoxication or drug impairment. >> didn't know was that this routine stop was about to unravel into something far more violent than anyone could have imagined. >> I was laying there on the white colored suburban gray. >> You got your vehicle in park, sir? >> Uh no, sir. >> Put it in park. >> Are you sure I can do that? >> Yeah, put it in park. >> I'll put it in park. >> Put it in park. >> All right. There might only be one or two guys on in a county at night. And I don't know about this particular county, but there's often times not a lot of backup. Sometimes your backup is a local PD or maybe the state troopers, but uh >> Put it in park, please. >> He may not have backup close by. >> No, sir. Put it in park. >> All right, I'm putting it in park. I'm putting it in park. >> Okay. >> In park. >> Is there anybody else in the vehicle with you? >> No no nobody but me. >> Okay. Who is this guy? >> And the windows just stopped working. >> Okay. You got your license on you? >> No, sir. But I do have a Okay. I do I know, sir. >> for? And this is my car. >> Okay, do me a favor. >> Yes, sir. >> Step on out of the car and I'll explain to you why I stopped you everything, okay? >> One, you're driving 35 in a 55. Two, you're weaving all over the road. >> limit. >> Actually, there is. >> I was not weaving. >> Okay. Well, the body camera and the in-car camera show you different. Okay? All right. >> Let me Can I Can I Can I do my seat belt? >> Yeah. >> So, his behavior is very strange. Look at his eyes, wide open, hands out. Just being weird. >> I can do my seat belt? >> Yes. >> My seat belt. >> I'm 10-4. Yes, you can undo your seat belt. Okay, step on out of the vehicle, please. >> You okay, man? >> He's itching for something. >> No, sir. I'm just really cold. >> You ain't got a jacket? >> No, no, this is all I have. >> He's reaching for something. Hey. >> This is my home, sir. >> What's your >> home. >> Okay. Just step out of the vehicle for me, man. Okay. >> This is my home. Okay? This is my home. >> Okay. You okay? >> Yeah. >> He's not okay. >> Okay. >> This is my home, sir. >> Okay. Just step on out of the vehicle, man. >> This is my home. >> I understand. Step on out of the vehicle, please. >> This is my home. >> I understand that. >> All right. All right. >> What do you got in that car What do you got in there? >> nothing in here. >> Okay. >> Nothing. >> I'm just asking, MAN. >> HOME. >> PUT THE GUN INSIDE OF A SOMETHING, A shirt or something. >> I'LL SHOOT FIRST! SHOOT FIRST! SHOOT FIRST! >> THANKS TO HIS BULLETPROOF VEST, >> SHOOT. So lucky. >> to retreat back to his patrol unit. But even after being hit, he got back behind the wheel and was more than determined to hunt the shooter down. >> Oh, heck yeah. You shoot me, you better I'm coming after you. >> Sheriff's office, got hit in the chest. 10-80, 10-80, 10-80. >> DAMN IT! >> [screaming] >> THAT'S GOT TO HURT. >> PROBABLY A MESS WITH IT. >> NOW, even though it will stop the bullet, it doesn't mean it might not break your ribs or crack your sternum. Now, he's stopping again. You know he's got a gun. >> 512, Sheriff's office, got him stopped. 1817, Highway 11. Vehicle stopped. GET OUT OF THE VEHICLE! GET OUT OF THE VEHICLE [screaming] NOW! GET OUT OF THE VEHICLE! >> SO, DAYTON JUST ASKED ME WHY I JUST opened fire? Yeah. It's a threat. So, what I would do is kind of what he's doing, but I I had a rifle, so I would have immediately popped out with my rifle. This is a much better gun for this distance. And I would have I mean, he's already shot you, so you're already in a lethal force situation. You know there's a gun in the car. It is a life or death situation right now. I think he would have absolutely been justified getting out and using deadly force. I might even have come up and rammed him, right? If just rammed his car. I don't know. These are tough ones cuz you're only the guy on scene can really do tell you, but I there's absolutely justification for deadly force at THIS POINT. >> GET OUT OF THE VEHICLE! [screaming] GET OUT OF THE VEHICLE NOW! >> I DON'T KNOW THAT MY COMMAND WOULD BE TO GET OUT of the vehicle. I think my command would be to drop the gun out the vehicle. >> NOW! GOING TOWARD JASPER. >> JASPER. GET OUT OF THE VEHICLE! >> OH, THERE HE GOES AGAIN. LOOK, he's a threat. >> Still rolling, Sheriff's Office. About 6 mph. >> Oh, this isn't good. >> Get me some help, Sheriff's Office. 12, what you got going on? YEAH, SHOTS FIRED GOING IN THE CAR. TEMPO. SHERIFF'S OFFICE, GET SOMEBODY EMS en route. Make sure you pass on everything. That vehicle description all units, surrounding units, all counties. >> This guy's pretty calm. >> I'll keep coming in case he goes down Juliet. Let me know if he passes Juliet Road, I'll put him down. Speed 66. Driver's all over the road. >> Oh, jeez. >> Notify Jasper County. >> Jasper County, so maybe Arkansas? Oh. No, no, no, no. Right there, boom. You can open up fire right there. You're running the risk of him shooting at you again. >> He's coming back toward gray. He turned around. >> The man who shot >> Now you got to send him back. >> later identified as 28-year-old Zachary. And with the suspect repeatedly slipping through their grasp, the pursuing deputies had to step up their game and were forced to use advanced tactics to finally stop him on his tracks. >> Run him off the road. He's a danger. He's a He's waving them on. Unbelievable. >> He's trying to wave us around. >> Man, he turned right in front of that other guy and >> If it's um I'm going to try to get just past Green 7 and put down spikes. If you just want to hold off for a second. I got spikes. I can try I can try. If it's um I'm going to put spikes down right here. >> All right, folks. A new year means new financial goals. Good pit. >> Shoot him. >> Stuck in a ditch with multiple deputies closing in from both sides, the harsh reality begins to set in. Zachary has nowhere to go and nowhere to hide. And now, he's about to realize that shooting an officer of the law at point-blank range was the greatest mistake he could ever make. >> GET OUT OF THE VEHICLE! GUN! [screaming] GUN! GUN! GUN! GET [screaming] OUT OF THE CAR! SEE YOUR HANDS. WATCH THAT. WATCH THAT. He had a gun. He lifted it up and pointed. He's wrapped in that green towel. Yes, sir. >> You're all being arrested. Just have a seat, all right? >> I mean, I'd love to know what you guys would have done in that situation.
