You can have my way card, just kind of >> Sir, back seat, show me your right hand. You don't have a valid registration. All right, everybody, welcome back. We got another video for you. This one comes from Midwest Safety and it is what not to do during a traffic stop. This ought to be good cuz we've seen a lot of what you shouldn't do. I have not seen it. Let's go. Hi. >> Hey, how are you guys? I'm good. Officer kind of Boise Police. Reason I'm stopping you is your registration is expired. It is. I just got it from my dad. Please, no, it's not expired. >> Okay, so here's the here's the issue, right? That's not the license plate that's on the car. Okay, so >> license plate I did Well, I did Yes, it is. Oh, it's a tattoo on her face. That's a bad look, by the way. If you're thinking about a tattoo on the face, don't do it. Is it a two-star or is it a two-star license plate? So, even if It's a Canyon County license plate. Yeah, two Yeah, Canyon County license plate. So, that's what's displayed. Okay, so if that's what is actually it's registered under, then Canyon County might be it might be uh Idaho. What it is is a it's a fictitious display. You can't have an old plate. Well, what do I do if I don't have the new plates delivered yet? Take old plates off. >> Oh, I don't know. My dad was the one handling everything. >> So, yeah, as long as you if you take the old plates off and just leave the temporary registration in the window, yeah. As long as you have a temporary registration in the window, you're okay. If we can see it, then you're okay. So, I'm putting up these windows. It's kind of cold out here. Uh yep, that's fine, man. You have a All right, they're being pretty cool with them. They said, "Look, you can't have the old plate on there." She said the registration's good, but it it's got an old plate on there. So, what the the officer should do and probably will do is take that plate off cuz she can't be displaying a fictitious plate. >> Uh if I What's that? Do he actually have a driver's license? Yes, South Carolina. Okay. Dude in the back there. I didn't see him at first. Yeah, I I didn't I barely saw I like I barely saw him as I walked up there. What if he's got a warrant? Yeah. That just goes to show you how dangerous these traffic stops are. They didn't even see the guy in the back. Out here in Arizona, everybody's got really tinted windows. So, we oftentimes couldn't see who was in the back or how many people might be back there. It was It can be very dangerous. He doesn't have a seat belt on. Let's see if I can get the back seat passenger's ID. Yeah. Here's the All right. So, the reason why they talk about a seat belt, in some states, you have to have a seat belt. If he doesn't have seat belt, then they can then require ID from him because he had to have a seat belt. Arizona, if you I think are 14 years old or older, you do not need a seat belt in the back seat. You need it in the front seat, not in the back seat. This bag. And then, can you roll the back window down for me, sir? This one? No, no reason No reason to. This one? There There is actually. I need ID him. I do. He's not He's not wearing a seat belt. What kind of What kind of He's not wearing a seat belt. It's a signable offense, so I need to know who I need to write that citation to. Okay. Okay. So, I need to be able to identify him. He wouldn't He didn't want to roll down the window, but then when he realized, "Oh, they do have a reason to ask for the window to be rolled down." Let's see how it goes. Hey, sir. Let me see your hands, please. That's not shady. That's not shady at all. Back seat, I need to be able to see your hands. Show me your right hand. You care if I wake him up? Sir. Back seat, show me your right hand. Okay. Keep that where I can see it. You understand? I'm going to pull him out. >> Yeah. All right. Here's what I need you to do. I need you to put both of your hands on the back seat rest. Okay? Put your hands on the seat rest. Put your hands on the back seat. Sir? I mean, can you feel the anxiety? I'm not even on the traffic stop and I can feel like my my alert going up and up and up just by the behavior of the guy in the back. That's not the issue. The issue is that you were not wearing a seatbelt. When I asked you No, it wouldn't because he's an adult. If he was a minor, it would be. When I'm talking to you, you were hiding your hands from me. Okay? That is pretty suspicious. I have every reason to have you step out of the vehicle. Okay. If you just keep your hands where I can see them, okay? But I need to identify Until he IDs himself, you don't know whether he's a minor or not. So, you're going to proceed accordingly. If you find out he's a minor, then you know, you deal with it accordingly. Are you all right? What's your last name, sir? What's your date of birth? What year? 2000? So, if you were born in 2000, that means you're not a minor like you were just telling me. Reaching for something. >> reaching. You understand me? Don't reach. Get him out. >> window down. You need to stop reaching. You understand? Sir, understand that I can control your movements right now. You understand that? So, here's what we're going to do. Put your hands on the back of the seat rest. Driver unlock the car. You're not >> Hey, get me out of the car. Go ahead. You're not getting me out of the car. Hey. What the [ __ ] are you doing, man? >> Hey. Hey. Hey. Hey. Hey. Get out of the car, you two. Out of the car. We got a bad crossfire situation. This other deputy is over here off to the other the other police officer. This is not a not a great situation they're in right now. I would like to see this other guy can't really move to the front of the vehicle, but I know he's trying to cover. This chick's she's out. 20-13 Code three. Sorry, he's code three. He's got a knife. NO. NO. NO. GET AWAY. NO. NO. GET AWAY. GET OUT OF THE CAR. DON'T DO IT. DON'T do it. No. Get back here, dude. Get back here. No, dude. No. Get back here. Sir, get back here. What, you going to shoot me? Shoot me? Hey. Get Hey. STOP. STOP. STOP. I WOULD NOT HAVE BACKED AWAY LIKE THAT, TO BE honest with you. 20-13-52. I foot pursuit. He going southbound on Division. Just turned eastbound on Island. Black male adult. Tan jacket. Blue jeans. Probably in the knife. SIR. NO, SIR. YEP. HE JUST WENT AROUND THIS SO, what you'll do is you'll create a Give me a black male adult. Tan jacket. Blue jeans. They're currently at You're going to create a perimeter. Try to put yourselves on so that he can't cross over onto another street without somebody seeing him. Um and then you can approach it tactfully. He's in the uh He ran back into this gated area. Can you start setting a perimeter? I'm on the north side. We can get some people to the east and south. All right, you guys. Okay, just stay out of there for now. We got a suspect with an armed armed suspect back there. Hey, just make sure you guys know he is armed with a knife. He took off running from us. All right, everybody. Sounds like he went running back that way. At this point we just have our dough. I've got him somewhat ID'd. I don't know if he has any warrants or anything, but he escalated pretty quick and then pulled a knife out when I was trying to have him get out the car. Dispatch was a So, while he was in the car and was somewhat contained, it's easy for me to be you know critique it right now like I always say, but um I know where they were moving back for a tactical advantage. They could still see him, but that I gave him the ability to get out of the car and take off on foot, too. Working on running him when this all kicked off. Should information should be in the call. We have assault on LE. No. No really. No, it'd be it's pretty be pretty weak. >> He was the back passenger. Trying to get him ID. He's trying to be asleep. His receipt fell down and then he reaches in his pocket. So, we unholster, he pulls out a knife. We know his name. Maybe. They even gave me the right name. >> gotten any return on I don't know. >> As officers set up a perimeter and search the immediate area, a 911 caller reports seeing the suspect jumping fences and traveling through people's properties. Stop right there. Boise Police, stop right there. Do not move. On the ground. Shoot him. All right, I'm challenging him. He's coming at me with a knife. Stop right there. Do not move. >> SHOOT HIM. DO NOT MOVE. Shots fired. Tell him to >> Suspect is down. Knife is still in his hand. Don't move. Tell him to move. I understand that. We love you, too. Okay? Put the knife down. >> Goodbye. Put the knife down. Put the knife down. >> love him. Tyrell. Right next to division. Put the knife down. He's got the knife still in his hand. >> [groaning and screaming] >> Let go of the knife, sir. Let go of the knife. Okay, stand by. We can get Now, people might be saying you got to go render aid to him. Mhm, no. It is not safe to go render aid to him. You cannot approach him until you know that it's safe. And then this point, you're going to need a couple more people to be able to get the knife away from. If he rolls over when you get close to him and stabs you, that's not okay. He doesn't Like you saw, they say they said the suspect's still alive. Once uh Yeah, I want to kick that knife away. Knife is in his right hand. See, you come up uh I'm got you. Yep. You stay neutral. >> Sir, do not reach for that knife. Do not reach for that knife, sir. Got it. Still don't know if he's armed with something else. All right. Get EMS out. Yeah, they're coming. Yeah, they're in the cuffs. All right. That was excellent work by that officer. He stood his ground, gave multiple commands for the guy to get down. He kept approaching him in an aggressive manner. He was well within that 21 to 25 ft um distance that we've talked about. And uh he did what he had to do. And unfortunately, this guy on the ground being treated right now with the knife put this officer in a position where he had to use deadly force. Um we'll see what happens. >> medical attention right now, sir. The knife is right here. Do you want to mark it? Yeah, he can't breathe because he got shot in the chest. Hey, they're they're They went that way. Oh, I see. So, Canyon Can- Canyon County, uh Idaho. Yeah, we're going to help you, we got help on the way, bud. Don't worry. We're still going to put him in cuffs as well. Help is coming, help is coming. >> [clears throat] >> Help is coming. Through the chest. >> Yeah, let's get a chest seal on him. Just with just one round? Three. One here? Yeah, right. Uh, one in the two in the chest. >> [clears throat] >> Good luck. That's good police work. Is there anybody else here? No, just me. I'm going to go update. This incident took place in Boise, Idaho on November 13th, 2024. The suspect, 22-year-old Gabriel Pope, was shot three times during the incident and was quickly provided medical aid before being transported to a nearby hospital. The officer who fired the three shots, Boise Police Corporal Steve Martinez, was placed on administrative leave after the shooting. And that's common. That does not mean anything. The The administrative leave is common. You usually get two, three days um and then you're back to work. While an investigation was opened into whether he was justified or not, Pope, after being treated at the hospital, survived his injuries and was later charged with felony aggravated assault on law enforcement, resisting arrest, and providing false identification to law enforcement. Pope's attorney said that he has had a very traumatic life as his Uh, well, here's the thing. Traumatic life does not give you the ability to or the right to go out and break the law. Like everybody's had traumatic life in some way, shape, or form. Trust me, everybody has. He's not It's not isolated or because you're poor or whatever your upbringing was. No. No, everybody's been through it. And mental health issues No, it's probably just never being held accountable and being just the courts failing, probably. I don't know. >> Mental health issues have caused him to commit crimes throughout his whole life. See, blame it on mental health, that that's what's caused him to commit crimes. life even while he was a minor. In September 2025, 10 months after the incident, as part of a plea deal, Pope pleaded guilty to aggravated assault on law enforcement with an enhancement for use of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, while the other charges were dropped. The judge, who told Pope he needed to quote, "Grow up", sentenced him to 10 years in prison with the possibility for Okay, I like this judge. Exactly. He needs to grow up. That's what he needs. Grow up. Thank you, judge. This is all unavoidable This is all avoidable, by the way. 10 years in prison with the possibility for parole after 4 years. Mm. I don't like that. Should be higher. >> parole after 4 years. She also urged the Idaho Department of Correction to provide mental health counseling, aggression replacement therapy, and substance abuse treatment during his incarceration. In November 2025, a full year after the incident, prosecutors found the officer who shot Pope justified in his decision under Idaho law after reviewing the body cam footage. So, body cam footage showing this, showing all of the pre-flight indicators that he had, that he had a knife, that he ran from the police, foot pursuit, climbing into people's backyards, armed with a knife, by the way, has an encounter with a law enforcement officer. This is a good shoot. This should have taken about 12 hours to figure out. One year this police officer had to deal with this looming over his head, waiting for the state to determine or the county attorney's office to determine whether this was a justified shooting. One year. Do you know what that does to a man and his family to know to have that looming over your head that you may get charged because you did your job? That's the problem. This should have been this This This was an easy one to to to figure out. It shouldn't have taken a year, and that poor guy had to live under this for a year. Not to mention a lifetime of knowing that he shot this guy. This is how traffic stops can be very dangerous. They can go like They It change like this. Didn't even see the guy on the first when they first came up to the car. Then they realized he was there. He tried to ignore the cops. Then when he finally still non-compliant, not showing his hands, what if that would have been a gun? Then when they see that he has a knife, they held him at gunpoint. He has a a window of opportunity. He gets out of the car. Thankfully, he did not hurt anybody else. After he ran out of the car and got into foot pursuit and after he was jumping into other people's backyards armed with a knife and clearly aggressive enough to go after law enforcement. And then um challenges a law enforcement guy, gets shot in the chest. Then wants him to tell his mom he love him. Now, whatever. Honestly, your behavior it's I don't Look, folks, this is all avoidable. It's all avoidable if you just follow the law and you're not a turd. And this car, the other girl on the front was shady, too. And the driver, I'd love to know what happened to them on this. But let me know what you think. Comment, like, subscribe. Let me know how you think the cop did. I thought he did awesome. Um he did what he had to do. And you never want to have to use your gun. I wish the guy could have gone his whole career without it. But he when he needed to, he was there to not only protect himself but the public from somebody that was obviously a threat to society. So, let me know what you think. Was 10 years enough? Especially if he can get out after four. Um at least it was in Idaho and they held him accountable unlike a lot of these other ones we've done. So, comment, like, subscribe. I'll catch you on the next video.
