Before the exercises even got far, she was already trying to reassure him that she was sober enough to drive. She said she was 22 and had only had one beer, but the officer wasn't relying on her confidence. He was watching her performance. >> I'll start timing you. I'll let you know when to stop, okay? The officer even warned her that the boots might make things harder and offered to let her take them off. Once she started the one-leg stand, the problem became obvious. She couldn't stay planted in one spot and kept shifting and moving her body just to keep from losing balance. >> I'm not going to I mean, at this point, >> Okay, well, I'm going to put them down for you. Just set them down here. Unfortunately, I am going to place Turn around for me. I'm going to place handcuffs on you and place you under arrest for DUI, okay? >> By the end of the test, the officer had seen enough. She still tried to explain that they were only going a short distance to a friend's house, but the destination no longer mattered. The officer told her to set the boots down, turn around, and informed her she was being arrested for DUI. >> She's just going to make sure you got nothing on you. Is there anything on you we need to know about? And I ask that of everybody, okay? I'm not accusing you of anything. We just want no surprises, okay? >> Once the cuffs went on, the encounter stayed surprisingly calm. The officer checked whether they were too tight and explained that a female trooper would search her before transport. At this point, there was no argument about the arrest, just the reality that the sobriety test had ended with her in handcuffs.
