On January 3rd, 2024, >> [music] >> the Clark County District Court in Nevada held a sentencing hearing for 30-year-old Deobra Redden. In 2022, Redden was convicted of attacking someone with a baseball bat. Later, he requested probation, citing mental health issues. However, Judge Mary Kay Holthus, a judge with 30 years of experience on the bench, denied his request in court. [music] The reason was that Redden had nine previous records involving violent attacks within the past 5 years. [music] But, the judge never expected that this decision would put her in danger just moments later. >> I just feel like I'm I'm in a better place in my mind. I'm going to go my I have a support system. No substances. And just like trying to learn from my mistakes, you know? You know, I I feel like I shouldn't be sent to prison. I feel like I should be given a shot because I'm in a better place than I've ever been. You know? And you know, so >> I appreciate that, but I think it's time that he gets a taste of something else because I just can't with that history. In accordance with the laws of the state of Nevada, THIS COURT IS >> STANDING 6 FT TALL AND WEIGHING AROUND 180 lb, Redden charged toward the 4-ft tall judge's bench and climbed over it. The entire incident happened so quickly that even the court clerk, who immediately stood up to intervene, was unable to stop him from reaching the judge. The court marshal immediately grabbed Redden and tried to pull him away. >> [music] >> But, Redden turned around and began attacking the court officer. The chaos lasted for nearly 40 seconds. With help from additional court officers, Redden was finally restrained. Judge Holthus suffered injuries to multiple areas, including her head and arms. She was taken to the hospital along with another court officer who suffered a head injury. One week later, the court resumed proceedings. [music] For safety reasons, authorities increased security measures around Redden. That day, Judge Holthus completed the sentencing [music] that had been interrupted earlier.
