Major announcement coming out of that news conference at City Hall today as you mentioned the city manager, the mayor, they came together and announced that the police chief and five officers with the Reno Police Department are now on administrative leave. >> A police chief, five officers, all placed on administrative leave at the same time. And officials say almost nothing about why. Today we're looking at what happened inside the Reno Police Department and the questions the public still doesn't have answers to. Thin blue lies, baby. On March 10th, officials in Reno, Nevada held a press conference announcing a major change inside the city's police department. Reno Police Chief Katherine Nance had been placed on administrative leave. Five additional officers were also placed on leave as part of the same investigation. City officials confirmed that the Nevada Department of Public Safety would handle the investigation. That means the probe is being conducted outside of the Reno Police Department itself. At the same time, the city announced that Washoe County Undersheriff Corey Solferino would serve as interim chief while the investigation continues. Officials said the change was necessary to maintain public trust while the investigation proceeds. However, during the press conference, officials declined to explain the allegations behind the investigation. They did not describe the nature of the misconduct. They did not identify the officers involved. They did not say whether the investigation could involve criminal activity. And they did not say whether the investigation could affect past police cases. For now, the official explanation is simply that potential violations of city policy are under investigation. >> This process will be fair. It will be independent. And it will go wherever the facts lead. Well, it's a major shakeup of the Reno Police Department, at least temporarily, as a chief and five others at the department have been placed on administrative leave effective today. Well, Joe Hart was at today's news conference at City Hall and joins us now with the latest about this investigation. Joe, all very surprising to learn. What can you share so far? Yeah, Andrea, a major announcement coming out of that news conference at City Hall today. As you mentioned, the city manager, the mayor, they came together and announced that the police chief and five officers with the Reno Police Department are now on administrative leave uh following some type of allegations of wrongdoing of city policy. That's what we learned today. Now, the mayor, the city manager held that news conference. The case handed over to the Nevada Department of Public Safety to investigate at this point. The Washoe County Sheriff's Office, they will provide command staff to fill in for the officers who are on leave and appoint an acting police chief as well at some point. Now, neither the city manager nor the mayor would provide details about the allegations or the timeline, like how far back this could go. They say their focus is on keeping things running smoothly. Right now, today, uh the role is for the continuity of operations. We want the men and women of the police department to understand that they are continuing to do their great work. And that's where the public explanation ends. Which is where the questions begin. Beyond the investigation itself, one issue is already drawing attention. Transparency. During the press conference, officials declined to provide details about the alleged misconduct. And that creates a challenge for the public. Police departments hold extraordinary authority in society. Officers have the power to detain people. They can use force. They can file charges that affect a person's freedom and reputation. Because of those powers, public trust in policing often depends on transparency and accountability. When a major leadership shakeup occurs without explanation, the lack of information can raise questions. For example, what type of misconduct is being investigated? How long had the issue been known internally? And could the investigation affect cases involving the officers involved? At the moment, those questions remain unanswered. Officials say they cannot comment further while the investigation is ongoing. That's not unusual during an active investigation, but it does leave the public with a significant leadership change and very little explanation. So, the big question, what those allegations are, we just don't know at this point. The city officials would not say. Our sources tell us that it has to do with training, what they call post-certification training for officers, but that's what our sources are telling us. The city will not confirm that. And then as far as how long this investigation could play out, that is hard to say. But the fact that they're bringing in command staff from the Washoe County Sheriff's Office to support operations at the City of Reno seems to tell you that it could be a while before things are resolved before we really do have all the answers. And Joe, before we go, do we have any information on the other five people involved in this? It seems odd that one name is released, but not the others. Yeah, not at this point, Andrea. I can tell you they were so tight-lipped at that news conference today. I don't know if they were concerned about legal ramifications, but did not want to not only the names, they wouldn't even say what the other positions are of those other officers. Again, you get the idea that it's sort of a a top brass situation since they're bringing in command staff from the Sheriff's Department to support RPD during this time. But as far as who those other five officers are, we just don't know at this point. All right, thank you so much, Joe, for your reporting. Well, Chief Katherine Nance became Reno's 21st police chief in February 2023 after a 25-year career with the Stockton Police Department. Well, she rose through the ranks from officers to deputy chief, leading major crime investigations, gang enforcement, special operations, and department-wide logistics. Well, as deputy chief, she oversaw $53 million budget and key citywide projects. Well, Nance says that transparency and community engagement are central to her leadership as she guides the Reno Police Department forward. Well, as the chief of police, Nance oversees nearly 350 officers. Investigations involving police leadership can take time. State investigators will likely review department records, interview personnel, and examine whether policies were violated. Depending on what investigators find, several outcomes are possible. The investigation could lead to administrative discipline. It could lead to leadership changes inside the department. Or, if investigators uncover potential criminal violations, the case could move into the criminal justice system. For now, the investigation is still in its early stages. Situations like this often take weeks or months before the full story becomes clear. For now, the key issue isn't just the investigation itself, it's transparency. When six members of police leadership are removed and the public is told almost nothing about why, the natural response is curiosity and scrutiny. And as more information becomes available, we'll see whether this turns out to be an administrative issue or something much bigger. Thin blue lies, baby. Hey, if you're still here, that tells me two things. One, you actually care about accountability. And two, YouTube hasn't scared you off yet. So, here's the deal.
