The axe and knife-wielding suspect, 43-year-old Matthew James Freeze, allegedly sustained bullet wounds in both legs, both arms, torso, and head before succumbing to his injuries. An autopsy confirmed he was high on methamphetamines. His criminal history stretched back to 1999, including convictions for two counts of first-degree assault, two counts of first-degree domestic violence, three counts of disorderly conduct, one count of carrying a concealed weapon, one count of aggravated menacing, one felony count of possessing methamphetamines, one count of vandalism, one count of trespassing in a habitation, and one count of resisting arrest. The shooting was unprecedented in Ravenna. Captain Jake Smallfield said it was the first time an officer had shot someone in his 25 years on the force. Thankfully, the stabbing victim was taken to the Center of Hope, where he received food, clothing, toiletries, bandages, and help connecting with a social worker about housing. While the two firing officers' identities have not been publicly disclosed, Ohio's Bureau of Criminal Investigation determined they would not pursue any criminal charges in the officer-involved shooting. They clarify that the officers responded appropriately to an imminent threat to their lives. The case has since been closed.
