If you reach in that car, I'm going to shoot you. Do you understand me? >> Can I say something really good? >> People will understand this one day. I hope. Let him know this guy's got blood all over him and his clothes. Wednesday, October 9th, 2024. PSBow, Washington, in a home on Scandia Road. What seemed like an ordinary afternoon would turn into one of the most shocking domestic violence cases in recent years in the state. Two teenage brothers, 17-year-old Scotty Bass and 16-year-old Sebastian Bass, [music] were found dead with multiple stab wounds. And the prime suspect, a member of the family. I'm Tyler and this is your daily dose of crime. Okay, 459, we are negotiating that last curve. He's got his left turn signal on. He's coming up to the construction business right now. All right, I lit him up. Driver, SHOW ME YOUR HANDS. HANDS OUT THE WINDOW. Keep your hands out the window. If you reach in that car, I'm going to shoot you. Do you understand me? over. Do not move. I will kill you. >> Okay, I'm going to reach over. I'm going to reach over. You see my gun? >> Okay, look at me in the face. You see my gun? >> Get the out here. Go. >> He's got his arm in. >> I love you guys so much. >> Step out. Get on the ground. >> On the ground. On the ground. On the ground. Hold on. Hold on. >> Seth Richard South, age 23, the victim's half brother, had until then been seen as a protective and close figure in the household. He had lived with his parents and younger siblings and was remembered by his family as both caring and affectionate. That image collapsed within hours. He himself had called 911, falsely claiming that one of his brothers had taken his own life and before the call was cut off amidst the sounds of a struggle. Moments later, he fled in his truck, sparking a pursuit across several counties that ended with his arrest and the discovery of blood on both his clothing and inside the vehicle. You got any weapons on you, dude? >> Hey, make sure Buckley doesn't freaking run us over. We're in the oncoming lanes. >> He's got blood on his arm. >> Yep. >> Oh, Jesus. >> You all right? >> You bust the window open or what? Okay, >> roll over. Kick your feet out in front of you. >> There you go. >> Ste's going to do it. >> Now we're going to go. >> All right, we're going to go to a car. >> Understand that you guys have complete control over me like no one else. >> Okay, so you're being audio and video recorded and there's a camera in the back seat that's going to record you. Okay. >> Very well. Everything else. >> Take off your shoes. understand that in terms of >> Okay, hang on a second. So, >> okay, I'm going to explain your rights to you. Okay, you have the right to remain silent and refuse to answer question. Anything you say can be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to speak to an attorney and to have one present with you while you're being questioned. >> If you cannot afford to hire an attorney, one will be appointed to represent you prior to any questioning if you wish. Do you understand your rights as I've explained them to you? >> Yes, I do. >> Okay. I don't have any questions for you. I'm just going to advise you your rights cuz you're in our custody. You may have another agency that wants to come talk to you. Go ahead and have a seat in the car. Okay. Can I say Can I say something really good? >> Sure. >> I just want I want people to understand that I came to this location cuz I need people to know I don't oppose anybody. >> Okay. Well, that that's good. We're going to put a seat belt on you. Okay. Lean back. >> Only the absolute worst. People will understand this one day, I hope. >> Okay. >> Uh let's grab a paper bag for the shoes. >> I don't have a paper. Who has a paper bag for the shoes? paper. >> Uh I don't think I already checked. >> I only have plastic. >> What? Yeah. >> Yep. Okay. Thank you. You guys weren't saying where the >> Yeah, cuz I was at >> Well, he stopped. So So I was expecting him to run. He stopped. I thought he was going to come out shooting. So, I just jumped out and body lights for him >> for what? >> Paper bags. >> Okay. >> Uh, he's going close and all over him. Not just from >> it's dry. >> 450. Are you on here? >> Can you reach out to Kitap? Let him know this guy's got blood all over him and his clothes and uh, we got him in custody. They may want to ask if our forensics will come take overall pictures of him before we >> The radio alert stating that South was covered in blood was more than an operational detail. It immediately triggered the involvement of forensic specialists aware that his clothing, skin, and vehicle were now part of the chain of custody. For the investigators, each trace of blood would represent a direct link to the Scandia Road crime scene. The procedure showed just how quickly that agencies moved to secure evidence, knowing the case would not be resolved through conflicting statements or misleading 911 calls, but through the physical proof which placed South at the center of the double homicide. >> You know, moves any of it, but put that ball in their court. I mean, I'm sure we'd probably cooperate with that, but we've got them and they're going to want good pictures of them. >> Yeah, >> we are actually going to have I don't need that. >> Okay. Well, we're probably going to take him to >> either Bonnie Lake or the D12 office for now. We may ask Bonnie Lake to use a holding cell depending on how long their ETA is if we don't have any at our office. >> I'm guessing it's probably going to be about an hour or so. Where is he? >> And then his wallet and key the car. So, we're probably going to need to leave somebody with a car as well. So, probably just hang tight until we find out more. >> Yeah, we have the car uh and him, but we'll probably move him somewhere else. But we'll sit on the car. It's in the middle of center turn lane at 410 and about the 23100 block currently. >> Okay. >> Okay. We can put on the top of the truck. >> Um right here. >> Yeah. I don't see a reason. >> He just decided to around here. >> Yeah. dirty. >> So is mine. >> I'm going out. I'm going to move this. >> Uh, >> you guys. All right. >> You want to get in here real quick? >> I can't. I mean, >> there we go. There we go. That's big enough. There you go. Okay, fire's coming. They'll come in here to the front. Do >> you want to move your patrol car to the front? It's pressure plated. >> So, if you guys Once you guys leave, we're want to put in secure, we can secure. >> This is the front door here. >> Yeah. So, if you go about around this way, >> it'll open for you. And then just Yeah. Come right around. >> I'll hold it up. >> That was dumb. This is good. >> You said you want to talk to a lawyer. >> Yeah, I do want to talk to a lawyer. So, >> I'm not going to ask you any questions. >> All right. >> You have my cuffs. >> Fix fix the wall. >> Fix the wall, man. >> Um, I think my partner has your cuff somewhere. >> [snorts] >> Thanks for coming. >> Oh, yeah. I was coming back. So, >> sorry about your table. >> Oh, yeah. We're very upset about it. He's >> dripping on your somebody's jacket here. Don't move. >> My hand's good. >> He decided to out, I guess. >> Broke the whole side of the >> Perfect. >> Just don't move. The fire department's coming. You're not going to die. >> You guys You guys have to understand that for some people there's a very >> No, you can just stop. You said you want to talk to an attorney, right? Are you injured anywhere else? >> Do you have any injuries? >> Um, aside from what what? >> I think it's Were you going to put him in the kids car? >> Yeah. >> All right, we're going to go to the car. Ready? >> Don't do anything stupid. We are done with you. >> It's just a finger. So, he's all right. >> And times like this is best. >> No. Shut up. >> Sit down. >> Times like this car >> to fight with the police. Right. >> Sit down and put your feet in front of you. >> How do I do it? >> Put your feet in the car. >> Are you guys all right? >> Yeah, we're good. got a little >> the hours after his arrest showed that the violence was not confined to the crime scene. While in custody, South displayed erratic behavior, refused to cooperate, and had aggressive outbursts that forced officers to increase control measures. During questioning, he lunged at a detective and damaged the room in an escape attempt, leading to additional charges of thirdderee assault and seconddegree escape. This behavior became yet another indicator of what psychiatric evaluations would later confirm. A possible schizophrenia spectrum psychotic disorder previously undiagnosed. For investigators, the contrast was crucial. A young man with no criminal record had turned into the suspect of a double intrafamilial homicide fitting the profile of a psychotic break in young adults where reality becomes so distorted that bonds of affection are perceived as threats. Seth Richard South grew up in PSBow in the same Scandia Road home where the tragedy occurred. His parents and sister recalled that he always had a close bond with Scotty and Sebastian often described as inseparable. Yet after the killing, South called different relatives, giving contradictory accounts. To one grandparent, he confessed to having the boys, and to another, he denied it. And to a third, he admitted someone without saying who. This confusion would reinforce the picture of a mental deterioration, later confirmed by specialists. Today, he faces two counts of seconddegree murder with domestic violence enhancements, along with charges of assault and escape stemming from his behavior in custody. In November of 24, he would be declared incompetent to stand trial and proceedings were suspended while he received treatment at Western State Hospital with hearings postponed into 2025. For the family, the grief would be three-fold. They mourned Scotty who was about to graduate and dreamt of becoming a park ranger. Sebastian who had just turned 16 and was excited to earn his driver's license. And the older brother whom until that day had represented both care and protection. The community unaccustomed to crimes of this magnitude would rally around the family with financial and emotional support. But even so, the pain had forced them to abandon the home they had built, unable to return to the place of tragedy. The South case presents a devastating paradox. How a family environment that once seemed to be safe could become the scene of extreme violence. And how the absence of an early diagnosis of severe mental illness would result in the loss of two young lives with a future ahead of them and the irreversible fracture of an entire family.
