What began as a retail theft in two Walgreens and Villa Park escalated into a high-risk police chase. Three men fled with merchandise and were soon spotted driving at high speeds throughout residential areas. The pursuit reached its most dangerous point when Arthur Turner, who was behind the wheel, lost control and crashed the vehicle into the garage of a home on Berkeley Avenue, only a few steps away from an elementary school. All kind of. Come on now. We got camera. >> After the crash, officers quickly established a perimeter to prevent the suspects from escaping. The first arrest came when 54year-old Owen Turner was located on the sidewalk and surrendered without resistance. Moments later, 38-year-old Arthur Turner and 55-year-old Thomas White attempted to flee on foot, but were taken to the ground and handcuffed under strict security measures. What's not visible is that the chase had not started in this neighborhood. The three men were already linked to a prior crime, and for the police, the priority was to secure them before the situation posed an even greater risk to residents. >> I'm crippled. Stop around. >> I'm crippled. >> You are [ __ ] when you're running. >> I'm running. >> Yeah, you were. >> I saw you. My dick, [ __ ] I spit on your ass. >> I have to spit on. [Music] on paper on >> paper. They got a bin when you're ready. >> Tensions rose when Owen began shouting insults and resisting as officers tried to place him in the squad car. At the same time, White underwent a precautionary search during which would be found in his pockets. An unexpected discovery that complicated the case even further. Up to that point, what seemed like an arrest following a traffic crash revealed a larger context. The three men had been identified in a Villa Park pharmacy theft that totaled more than $1,300. The presence of narcotics reinforced that this was far more than a reckless escape. It was a group already facing multiple allegations. >> You go out of the bag. >> Another one. Yeah. >> Here's another one. >> I got a back here. >> Got more. >> I got one back here. >> What's your name? Thomas put you in the back of the seat. All right. Is it going to run too? >> Well, there is a crash car before came back to Roosevel. Is anybody here? No. Talk to me. >> No, I tried knocking and the dog definitely would let their owner know. >> How about the doors? >> I just asked Yukon for a phone number. >> So, waiting to see if they'll give us a phone number. >> The neighbors at home. >> Yeah, the lady's out there. >> Oh, she did? >> Yeah. >> With White secured in the patrol car, officers inspected the damaged property. A neighbor confirmed that the house was rented and that the occupants were not home, ruling out possible injuries. The scene highlighted not only the crash itself, but the vulnerability of an entire neighborhood suddenly exposed to a dangerous pursuit during the morning rush. Meanwhile, the suspect's behavior revealed distinct strategies. Oh, and tried to disrupt the process with verbal resistance. Arthur remained silent, aware he carried the greatest responsibility, and White offered partial cooperation despite being caught with this. Disparity reflected a common pattern in seasoned defenders, dividing their responses in hopes of confusing the investigation. Though in this case, it only strengthened the solidity of the operation. [Applause] >> You guys neighbors? >> Yeah. Do you want the her info? >> Can you Are you able to give her a call? >> Yeah, I was going to do that. I didn't know if you wanted me to. >> Appreciate that. >> No problem for that cuz I'm sure this is not their house. >> No, it's she's renting. >> Yeah, but the guy that owns it lives just across the park. >> Oh, okay. I might have his >> What's going on? Take pictures. >> Oh, okay. >> They took diapers. I think formula. really took a bunch of gum. >> You wanted coke. They had a pipe on >> I don't know if they were >> Yeah. You got >> working. >> That's why they keep asking any your Carlos. >> Yes. [Applause] >> Hey. >> Yeah. >> Do you need anything? Maybe at least one of us can still go to that train. >> Hey. Um, four people. >> Hey, do you hear him? >> What? >> He said he wants like three or four people in booking. >> Yeah, I'm going. >> Okay. >> Sergeant, I'm going to go to booking. >> Yeah, Victor. I'm in route to booking. >> How are you? >> Hey, how are you? >> Good. >> All right, brother. What's your first name again? >> Thomas. >> Thomas. >> Look, man. We're not CPD. We're cool. All right. You're cool with us, we're cool with you. Your guy in there is being stupid. He's going to have to learn the hard way that uh we could be really bad guys as well. I need you to be cool. I'm going to put you inside the cell for now until we get your buddy out of that car that's being all stupid. Watch your flipper. Watch your step there. >> All right, hang on. Hang on. >> Watch your back, guys. >> Hold on. Open the door. >> Hey, DC. I'm going to grab one out of here. >> I got it tight. >> It could be tucked away. It doesn't be tucked away, man. I'm going to put you in the cell for now until we get you. >> The investigation ended with all three men in custody and enough evidence to file charges. Arthur Turner, the driver of the chase, responsible for the crash, would be charged with burglary, retail theft, aggravated battery, and aggravated fleeing and eluding. He also faced an outstanding warrant in Wnebago County for armed robbery, which justified a pre-trial detention without bond. If convicted, the combined charges would result in a sentence exceeding two decades in prison. Owen Turner and Thomas White were charged with burglary and retail theft, but were released while awaiting trial. Both face potential sentences of up to seven years in Illinois prison if prosecutors are able to prove the charges in full.
