this was a crime that shocked a small college town and captured the attention of the world in between we appreciate everyone who is standing in solidarity with us this evening we're touched by the outpouring of love and support and prayers we've received over the past two and a half weeks and I want each of you to know that you're not alone four University of Idaho students were murdered in a house near campus tell me about what a beautiful person she was oh she was she was so great she was she lit up every room she come in and she was just so positive and fun and uh and we just we love her and miss her so much some feared the murders of Maddie Mogan Kaylee gavs Ethan Chapan and Sonic carolo would never be solved police described the case as very complex on the evening of November 12th and into the early morning hours of November 13th Kaylee and Madison arrived home at approximately 14 5:00 a.m. after visiting a local bar and a street food vendor who would want to harm these four students as they slept in their house it took over 6 weeks for an arrest to be made police would eventually identify the suspect as this man you detectives arrested 28y old Brian Christopher Colberg hello how you doing how yall doing today every inquiring mind wants to know why why would Brian coburger do this the maximum penalty is death and imprisonment for Life Brian coburger is a PhD student in criminology who lives just 10 m away that's just one of the many questions that have remained unanswered for more than a year now but the evidence proves it all on that knife sheath was DNA likely left there by the killer including those 12 times when he's hanging around this house you better have a pretty good reason for this guess what the defendant the suspect the accused what does he drive a white launer the way that we have been convicting cob Berger is absolutely appalling and disgusting I want all the evidence out I want it to be clear if I'm the parent of one of these poor kids he is the Boogeyman here is all that happened that day the investigation that followed suit the evidence and what lies ahead tonight we're joined by people from around the state and across the country for this vigil students employees community members they hold candles on our campuses in Boise cordelane and Idaho Falls we've also heard that at this moment people are gathered Statewide from pot latch to Ketchum on November 13th 2022 four lives were taken Mattie Mogan Kaylee gon Cals Ethan chapen and zic carod I try not to think too much about any of the darker side of the aspects I just try to stay positive there'll be days where I have to focus on the negativity but but today is not one of them I missed a smile and that she was she was so giving when she came home she was always giving me a hug always making sure she got a hug before she left the house just the simple things these girls were born 14 days apart we loved them both so much it was a great great story and I'm sad that it ended and we lost them both at the same time I'll never see this car as mine she paid for it she felt like this was a super cute car it was emotional riding with Steve in kayle's car on her birthday everything seemed normal in Moscow Idaho on November 12th 2022 really did do the Social Media stuff get down get down and these girls you know they were everywhere so people got a taste and a look and a feel of who they really were I think people connected with that and then if you go back you can see like I hate to say it but like the last hours of their lives those last hours included two photos posted by Kaye on one of them she wrote one lucky girl to be surrounded by these people later that night kotal and her boyfriend Ethan chapen went to a party at his fraternity Sigma Chi about a 5-minute walk from their off-campus house on King Road according to investigators that last night Ethan and Zanna go to a party at the sigma Kai house they're there till about 1:45 a.m. that morning Zan's roommates Kaylee gavs and Madison Mogan were seen at the corner Club a historic sports bar in town a twitch video from the grub truck recorded Kaylee and mty ordering food around 1:30 a.m. after hanging out at the corner Club bar and then what was car back of the week excellent and then click C rewards enjoy and it looks like you not quite have enough on it oh that's okay that's okay $10 so about 10 minutes later the video shows Maddie reaching to grab the food they ordered Kaye has her cell phone up as if she's filming the moment they're laughing with each other until you see them run out of the frame Maddie and Kaylee hung out for a few minutes doing what college kids do looking at kayle's phone and at one point taking a selfie minutes later the lifelong friends walked away a guy in a white hoodie trailing behind police say the man with them is not a suspect Kaylee and Maddie took a ride sheare home the driver said he had driven Kaye Maddie and zanana home many times he said they were all nice happy friendly girls that morning he dropped off Kaye and Maddie just before 2: a.m. about 6 minutes later they arrive at home on King Road according to an affidavit Ethan and xanana are already in the house along with two other roommates they never knew this would be their last days everybody here my name is Chief James fry with the Moscow Police Department I'm going to be reading from my notes today cuz I want the information you receive to be extremely accurate the four were stabbed with a knife but no weapon has been located at this time there was no sign of forced entry into the residence based on details at the scene we believe this was an isolated targeted attack on our victims right away I think everyone knew this was going to be big story I mean you've got four college students taken down at once inside the same home and the chief comes out pretty quickly and and says listen no forced entry here this was a targeted isolated attack so most of us thought should be solved pretty quickly but that's not what happened here people around the state of Idaho started following the story and then around the world these young adults were in the prime of their lives even the community and the professors air their feeling did all our students and our faculty and our staff and it's been just a struggle to to get through this last week so how hungry is this University this town for answers very much so uh the fact that there isn't an answer is makes makes this even worse you know all of us are shaking I've heard from people all across the country talking about this tragedy it's a small college town we all know each other people in the community knew these students so everybody's affected one way or another and part of it's because we just don't know anything yet as the days and weeks passed it seemed as if the police had little to go on it would be a daunting task trying to figure out who killed the four students the house where the murders happen was on Greek row just off campus even the prosecutor's attorney Bill Thompson felt the pain we also met the prosecuting attorney Bill Thompson any new details nothing that I can share how was the crime um I can't talk about it everybody's working together the the investigation is still active absolutely how long they're going to stay here at the home as long as they need to days after the murders family and friends of Kaylee Maddie Ethan and Zanna gathered to pray and to remember them this isn't at all intimidating I must say and I didn't write any of the funny stories that we talked about that is service but I would like to start by saying my name is Stacy chapen Ethan chapen was a triplet his siblings Maisy and Hunter attended the University of Idaho with him his mother Stacy talked about the memories the family shared and have it hit national news I mean I don't we're more concerned you know Ethan was a triplet and that's a big thing there's a couple of things Ethan was a triplet and that's the most important thing for us because we have these other two kids that are very impacted by this um and they need to be lifted up and cared for um and I think the other thing that's important to us is the reason why we've agreed to do this is number one you're local and number two it's important for us to get Ethan's story out we don't really want anybody else representing him and it's hard to have people speaking on his behalf so we think it's best for us to do this and you did say of course that he was a triplet and looking through the pictures he sent like you said they seem to be always together I mean they all went did they all go to high school and then College together also Elementary High School everything College they all went to the same University yeah I mean everything we travel we play We hike everything we do is all of us together I mean we're a pretty tight family did you say that they were the ones that called you about this happening yeah yes and then are you guys all back together now we are yeah we're in our home in northern Idaho our summer home we're gonna be here for a couple days just to regroup a little yeah and can you just tell me a little bit about Ethan I think I was told he was very athletic I think he played was a basketball and tennis or basketball just tell me a little about his interest what did Ethan like to do anything he play you name it he played it literally I think we just watched a thing from the University spikeball champion Volleyball Champion I mean right I mean he just literally would play and do anything he he played club soccer for years he was played you know we traveled all of our kids are athletic and we traveled every weekend and it just he was involved in anything he just literally he was I don't he just loved to play everything he did he loves sports I mean our like our love language with him was sports like I literally watched um I follow like NFL football so that I can literally have a conversation with Ethan because I could you know send him a text message and you know that was you know I don't know just everything I don't know that and country music I mean yeah you know he's he's funny he literally I we were having trying to have a conversation really quickly about our favorite me memory we can't come up with one I mean he literally lit up every room every Everybody he was friend to all um he just he was an incredible human I mean oneof a kind popular I mean not that that matters but I don't know I think we believe that if you literally ask anybody in his life anybody they would tell you the same exact thing I mean I literally I just got an email from his counselor at college and he was just said I love that kid the minute I met him he l Lally walked in my office last week and it was just simply to say hi he had a huge smile the whole like you know the feeling inside of the office changed just because he walked in he always had something funny to say that's been something we've talked a lot about I mean he was definitely the comedian of the three kids gripped with fear many students went home to finish the semester online others stayed in their dorms going to class on Zoom was a person capable of killing four people walking among them who was it and would he ever be found there were just too many questions unanswered for anyone to feel truly safe things and that's why they told me to slow down Steve you know this thing you know you me as as a father it's never fast enough and I want to just charge ahead like a probably just like a dumbass but that's what I knew what the families and the public didn't know was that the detectives had some significant evidence and leads including DNA and a potential eyewitness a surviving roommate would later tell authorities that around this time she woke up to what sounded like Kaylee playing with her dog in the room on the third floor She also reports hearing someone say there's someone here Dylan will be a key witness in all this because she's on the same floor as two of the murders and she opens her door three different times now the first couple of times she really didn't see anything but she was hearing voices maybe it was the dog maybe somebody was was crying or something she wasn't quite clear what she heard but the third time she opens the door she sees this tall figure dressed in all dark colors and she noticed his bushy eyebrows and then this man walks right past her the same surviving roommate says she hears what sounds like crying coming from zanna's room she opens her door for a second time and hears a male voice say something to the effect of it's okay I'm going to help you she later opened her door a third time and saw a masked man walking past her towards the sliding glass door in the kitchen in Frozen shock she locks her door imagine what it would be like to be a young woman who opens the door and sees this man all in black and all you really see are his eyebrows and he's tall and he's big and he just killed four people with a knife he walks right past you and out the door how close to death were you it gives me shivers to just think about what that is and that must just roll through her head every single day yeah that's going to stick with a jury the major piece of evidence that gave the police a hint and progress was a knife sheath Left Behind likely by the killer it was found partly under Madison moin's body and the comforter on her bed on the snap of that night sheath was DNA so investigators had DNA from the crime scene and they took the DNA and they ran it through the National Crime databased and there were no hits no matches but the DNA was still useful because you could eliminate potential suspects and there were a lot of them not only ones that law enforcement was looking at but a whole bunch that people online all those True Crime [ __ ] that are out there were looking at as well I made a video a few weeks ago Jeremy rean was Ed in that video and a lot of people since then have said that he seemed very suspicious or he was the murderer Jack Duco and Jake shrier are the boyfriends of Kaylee and Maddie investigators looked into them but cleared them of any suspicion these two guys are the boyfriends of Kaye and Maddie as a matter of fact uh Jack shared a dog murf with Kaylee so a lot of people are looking at them and investigators looked at them as well but cleared them so law enforcement says these guys are Innocent but the folks online weren't convinced additionally Jack schalter referred to his hoodie guy was present at the food truck with Maddie and Kaylee and appeared suspicious in the video to some observers you're the official source of information individuals who are being harassed in these this situation people need to be careful detectives gathered recordings from homes and businesses all around the area at the time of the murders one thing stood out a white Hyundai Elantra through our investigation that that car was any area during the time of the murders at 3:29 a.m. surveillance footage obtained by police from the King Road neighborhood captures a white Elantra making an initial drive by the victim's house authorities say this car will make another two passes in the next 30 minutes then at 4:04 they say it was back for a fourth time stopping in front of the house before traveling on to do a three-point turn it then drove past the house again and out of the camera's View at 420 it was back in View and leaving the area at a high rate of speed this white alantra and there's an officer a campus police officer from Washington State University across the state border who decides to run a list of all the white elantas on campus and he finds one it's registered to a guy named Brian Colberg they also found out that this car had been pulled over twice in the months before the murders once in Moscow and once in Pullman hello I am officer Lingus stops being audio and video recorded I was just slightly into crosswalk so yeah where I'm from Pennsylvania we actually don't have like crosswalks oh so even if you're if you're kind of slightly they have there's a little bit more leeway as well like there are a few lines like there's one white line there's another one there's like a certain margin from which you can actually kind of put your vehicle place your vehicle in Moscow he gave the police's phone number when you get a phone number it changes everything because you get access to it in a different way that's one more piece of evidence one more piece of the puzzle is it enough to see what the puzzle says not necessarily but you getting closer investigators found that cob Berger's phone was either turned off in airplane mode or out of battery between 227 a.m. and 4:48 a.m. on the morning of the murders as it did not connect to any cell phone towers during that time sometimes it's not about evidence it's about the lack of evidence that actually matters in this particular case we had a cell phone that was turned off for a very specific window of time during a window of time where four people were murdered and he is the singular suspect that means something then between 9:12 and 9:21 a.m. police say data collected shows the suspect's phone appearing near the scene of the murders about 8 hours after the killings the 911 call came after 8 hours some people are asking why some people when they're very frightened they just shut down and they tend to isolate and hide and basically it's a safety seeking safety response if she had been drinking or under the influence of something she might have just shut down because she really didn't know what to do later investigators found out that when they looked back at Co Berger's cell phone records in the 5 months leading up to the murders his phone was in the area of the girl's home on 12 separate occasions but the DNA was the unlocker for his arrest last night in conjunction with the Pennsylvania State Police the Federal Bureau of Investigation detectives arrested 28-year-old Brian Christopher Colberg in Al brightsville Pennsylvania on a warrant for murders of Ethan Zena Madison and Kaylee the DNA found on the knife sheath was the piece of the puzzle investigators needed 3 days before Colberg arrest detectives used trash from Colberg parents' home for a DNA sample that turned out to be a match to the suspected Killer's father imagine what happens when you're finally able to get the results of the DNA sample that you pull from the father you can just hear the champagne popping this is a quad murder that has to be Elation in that Squad room in that war room when they're sitting together and they're looking at each other and going we got this guy we've got this guy the 28-year-old Brian Christopher Colberg in Al brightsville Pennsylvania was arrested and taken into custody in Pennsylvania he met with an attorney who said publicly that Colberg told him he believed that he would be exonerated in my hour conversation with him that comes off uh I can tell that uh and he understands where we are right now hey Brian you doing how you feeling how you feeling Brian even though Brian cobber wasn't fighting extradition he still had to appear in a Pennsylvania courtroom I was inside of that courtroom when he walked in and every every one was able to see him for the first time his mother broke down into tears the cerg family they were sitting on the front row of that courtroom he made sure to make that eye contact with them and he kept looking at them even though Brian Colberg wasn't fighting extradition he still had to appear in a Pennsylvania courtroom when Colberg arrived in Idaho the whole Community was waiting to see him he was taken off the plane in Pullman and put into a pickup truck big breaking news folks just moments ago here it is the arrival of the accused killer in Idaho it was quite a seed when cobber arrived back in Idaho he was taken off the plane in pman and put into a pickup truck and then a caravan of law enforcement Vehicles drove him into the Lal County jail parking lot where media and even members of the public were outside waiting for him the next time we saw him would be in a courtroom that appear appearing in court prosecutors release the probable cause affidavit which is packed with extensive details spanning 18 Pages at that point the public received some answers but more importantly the families finally got some answers you have the right to represent it by a lawyer if you cannot afford one one could be appointed to represent you based upon your financial need you also have the right to appeal any conviction in your case do you understand these rights yes I am now going to go over the criminal complaint with you count one of the criminal complaint charges you with the felony offense of burglary it alleges that the defendant Brian C cerer honor about November 13th of 2022 in lah County state of Idaho did unlawfully enter a residence located at 1122 King Road Moscow with the intent to commit the felony crime of murder in violation of Ido code 18-1 1401 and 143 the maximum penalty for that offense if you plead guilty or found guilty is not less than one year in prison no more than 10 years in prison and or a $50,000 fine or B do you understand yes count two alleges that you committed the felony offense of murder the case is still ongoing making it close to two years since these four victims were murdered at the court both parties agreed for the trial to take place in June 2025 for a set a um scheduling order and um I think we we're about 13 months from the um arraignment and I think at this point this is my opinion that we're getting to a point of diminishing R returns and I um sent to council uh last Friday on a proposed scheduling order for a lot of things deadlines including uh setting the trial and so I also have I set this hearing so that we can discuss this and see kind of where everybody is so let me start with the state thanks thank you H we we've reviewed the Court's proposed scheduling order um with the attorney team and we are agreeable to it it makes sense uh that we do the trial in the summertime when high school is out across the street and when the university is out and the conflicting activities um and the schedule to your honor proposed acceptable to the state I would note uh just Minor Detail that uh July June 19th is also a legal holiday it were specified July 4th that as a legal holiday we wouldn't be able to hold trial but sureth as well other than that um we have no objection to Court's proposal all right thank you I mean as I as I went through all of this I mean there's be a lot of motions a lot of hearings um a lot of work uh there already has been in significant amount of work as we all know and um when I when I tried to balance this out I I do think it was uh it's pretty fair balanced and I hope realistic so Miss Taylor thank you judge um you're on our first I know the court has listed this as taking place in lto County we haven't been heard on our change of venue yet that's so I just I don't want anybody thinking I'm agreeing to lto County as all the June of 2025 that's the time frame that we have been working towards I am hopeful that we can come in there we're working towards that date I think it's reasonable to set that date as the Court's aware mitigation is something that takes a significant amount of time we've had that underway since the day we took this case we continue to work that very hard as of the moment the suspect remains in custody awaiting his next court appearance in June
