Police in Franklin, Tennessee, responded to a minor fender bender. But when they arrived, the driver behind the wheel of a white Dodge Ram turned out to be none other than former Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler. Moments later, everything changed. What happened next left officers stunned, and the footage you're about to see tells a story Jay probably wishes was never made public. On October 17th, 2024, at approximately 7 p.m., police in Franklin, Tennessee responded to what first appeared to be a minor fender bender on Bridge Street. A white Dodge Ram had just rearended a black SUV. But when officers arrived and identified the driver, things took a surprising turn. Behind the wheel was none other than former Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler. What began as a simple accident quickly escalated when the other driver claimed Cutler offered him money not to call police and even tried to leave the scene. Moments later, officers noticed a strong odor of alcohol coming from the former NFL stars breath. What happened next would leave fans stunned, and it's all captured right here on police body cam. >> Hi, I'm officer with the Franklin Police Department. Um, which which vehicle is yours? Ram right there. Okay. Because I hit >> Okay. Do you have uh proof of insurance and registration? >> You tried to get away. >> What's that? H how? >> He was behind me. He ran into me. So I'm on the phone talking to talking to the dispatcher. Then he whoops around, but he comes to a dead end. That's how we ended up right here. We was up there at the light. He ran to He couldn't go nowhere. >> Okay, I see. Yeah. Uh, >> my license >> red shake proof of insurance. >> Come on over here. >> Okay, guys. So, listen. Here's the deal. In the state of Tennessee, so first of all, I'm Officer Sprout with the traffic you in the state of Tennessee. There's two reasons why law enforcement doesn't do crash reports. Okay? One is if it's on private property, which obviously this is not. it was on a public roadway. The other is if there's less than $1,500 worth of damage per vehicle. So, that being said, there's obviously less than $1,500 worth of damage per vehicle. So, what I'm going to have y'all do is I'm going to have y'all swap information. Okay? So, you're going to take pictures or write down each other's insurance information, your driver's license, and your phone numbers. Okay? And then y'all are each going to take pictures of the damage, and then you can call the insurance companies. Okay. Yes, sir. What damage? >> There is a small dent >> right here. >> You want that insurance and registration? So, do you need a signification? >> Hey, sir. >> Registration. >> I'm advanced roadside impairment detection enforcement officer. >> How much alcohol you had today? >> Uh, a little bit. >> Okay. >> When you've been drinking and driving, it's often smarter not to submit to field sobriety tests. These tests are highly subjective and even sober drivers can fail due to nerves, fatigue, poor balance, or uneven ground. Officers typically use them not to prove your innocence, but to gather evidence of impairment for your arrest. Once you begin, every wobble, hesitation, or slip of speech becomes documented on body cam and later presented in court as proof of intoxication. Refusing these voluntary tests can limit the amount of incriminating evidence available against you. While you'll still likely be arrested, the prosecution has less visual and physical proof to build a strong DUI case. It's generally safer to politely decline a field sobriety test and instead comply only with lawful identification requirements. Remember, officers are trained to interpret minor mistakes as signs of intoxication. So, declining respectfully is often the most legally strategic choice when you know alcohol is in your system. Better yet, if you've been drinking, just get an Uber and don't drive drunk. >> Are you want to do some field test for me to make sure you're okay to drive? >> No. >> Tammy, 10:15. >> I'm going to take stuff out of your hands. >> You're under arrest for driving under the influence. >> Hold on one second. I'm going to patch you down. Do you have anything in your pocket's going to hurt me, poke me, or stick me? >> No, sir. >> Spread your feet apart for me. Okay, buddy. Hang on one second. I'm going to take this watch off because it's going to really hurt if those handcuffs pinch against that watch. Let's walk over here to my car. >> Yeah, that's >> And this is the moment it clicks. They suddenly realize who they're arresting. Former Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler. >> Hey sir, can I ask you a question? >> Sir, >> how much alcohol have you had today? >> Uh, none. >> Don't lie to me. I'm an advanced roadside impairment detection enforcement officer. >> How much alcohol have you had today? >> Uh, a little bit. >> Okay. Are you willing to do some field sobriety tests for me to make sure you're okay to drive? >> No. After his arrest on October 17th, 2024, former NFL quarterback Jay Cutler was taken to Williamson County Jail and released after posting a $5,000 bond. He faced multiple charges, including DUI, unauthorized gun possession while intoxicated, implied consent violation, and failure to exercise due care. On August 26th, 2025, Cutler plead guilty to the DUI count as part of a plea deal that dismissed the weapons charge. He was ordered to serve 4 days in jail beginning September 29th, pay a $350 fine, have his Tennessee driver's license revoked, and complete one year of unsupervised probation along with a required DUI safety class. In closing, this case is a vivid reminder that fame doesn't exempt anyone from the consequences of impaired driving. What do you think about this case?
