A black Mercury Sable is clocked at 80 mph on a wet, rain-soaked road where the limit is just 45. In Georgia, that kind of speed can land you in handcuffs under the state's super speeder law. And the officer on scene is already talking about reckless driving, even arrest. But instead of simply following the law, these officers do something so unprofessional, so careless, it will eventually cost them everything. Stay with me to see exactly what happened on that roadside, how a simple traffic stop turned into a national scandal, and why in the end nobody walked away from this incident unchanged. On April 7th, 2018 at approximately 1:10 p.m. on East Crossville Road in Roswell, Georgia, police spot a black Mercury Sable flying down a wet, rain-soaked road at 80 mph in a 45 zone. The driver, identified as 24-year-old Sara Webb, had no idea what was about to happen. In Georgia, that's not just speeding. It's super speeder territory, where drivers caught at 75 mph or more on a two-lane road or 85 mph or more on other roads can be arrested at the officer's discretion. But instead of simply following the law, these two Roswell officers did something unbelievable. They flipped a coin to decide her fate. Stay with this video until the end to find out what happened, how that coin toss changed everything, and what it ultimately meant for everyone involved. >> Stay in the car. >> Sorry, my window doesn't roll up. >> Officer Brown, Roswell Police Department. Do you know how fast you were just going, ma'am? >> I'm so sorry. I'm late for work. >> So, you could go over 80 mph on 92? >> No, ma'am. >> Do you have your driver's license and your insurance card? >> Yeah, my insurance >> Turn off the car and pass me the keys, please. The ground's wet, it's been raining, you're going over 80 miles an hour on this type of a road. That's reckless driving, ma'am. >> The officer state reckless driving, so she's wanting to arrest Sarah Webb. >> Where do you work at? >> I work in Duluth at Johnny Parker Beauty Studio. >> Okay. >> I'm a hair stylist. >> Okay. So, you think driving that fast on a wet road is a smart idea just because you're late for work. Instead of calling and say you're running late for work. You would rather risk people's lives. >> I'm sorry. Um This is Lexus Nexus. I'm trying to look it up. I don't have it printed off. >> Give me one second. I'll be right with you. Go for it. >> The officer isn't wrong about one thing. Sarah has absolutely no business driving that fast in those conditions just because she's late for work. She could have picked up the phone, called her job, and dealt with the fallout later. Anything would have been better than gambling with her life and everyone else's on that road. But, what the officer eventually does to handle this situation is not just shocking, it's flat-out wrong. >> Guys, I'm having issues with my CAD. Can you please do an 8 and 10 check on a Georgia tag? As well as an 8 and 10 check on a Georgia driver's license. >> 22, I'm out with Alpha 1. >> I'm out. >> I'm out with Alpha 1, assisting. >> All right. She was going like almost 90 down 92. She flew past me. I had to get up to 90 to catch her. >> Wow. >> My CAD's not working. Is yours? Did you do >> I checked. >> KCC is um >> you check the tag, too? My I'm going to have to restart this and see what the deal is. I'm on three. >> of one. Off of one. I got a 2005 Mercury Sable to style with a Lawrenceville valid negative 10. >> I'm going to restart my computer. >> I got a 1992 Sierra web class C valid negative 10. >> Copy. Thank you. >> Don't make me skid around in the rain. >> to take I'm going to take her probably for reckless. >> Okay. >> She flew past me going probably 80 85 on 92 in the wet road. She said she's running late for work. I had to get up to 90 to catch her. What do you think? I mean, I don't have any speed detection at the same time, but >> No, but you can use the fact that you were going whatever speed and she went past you. >> Mhm. >> It's on camera, so you're going to have a back speed. You're going to have the fact that you went 90 to catch up to her. Um you're going to have two faster conditions and >> Yeah, I mean, that's unacceptable. I told her I said, "You know the roads are wet, correct? You're running late for work and you're going above 80 >> Right. >> to get to work? I said, "Call." I said, "Do not do that and put people's lives in jeopardy." >> Yeah. >> So, my CAD just froze on me, so I'm restarting it right now. What do you think? Or just tickets? >> The officer who made the traffic stop is clearly leaning toward arresting Sarah for reckless driving and starts talking it over with the second officer who just arrived on scene. So, how do they go from a serious decision about an arrest to suggesting a coin toss to decide her fate? You're about to see exactly how they get there. >> What is that? A head or tail? Okay. >> This is This is >> Yeah. So, really 23. >> Code 23 means arrest. >> Michael Jordan? Hi. So, I got two two fast for Let me write this down. >> Two fast for conditions. >> Reck- Is it reckless? >> For Yeah, you can do reckless. Um and then speeding. And you're just going to have to mark the pace one instead of the >> I mean, either way, the speed limit here is what, 45? >> 45. >> She was going way She I mean Cuz I haven't done one like speeding like that. So, that's why I'm I'm a little bit unsure. >> That will be on there. It's going to ask you for moving or not moving and you're going to do both. >> Can you help me do these dang tickets? My CAD won't even log me in. All right, I'm going to go. >> Yeah, that's not okay. >> Yeah. Hi, ma'am. Can you do me a favor and step out of the vehicle for me? Put the phone down. >> Why am I being detained? >> Step out of the vehicle. Turn off your engine and step out. Because, ma'am, you were driving entirely too fast for conditions. You put a lot of people's lives in jeopardy, okay? Double lock these so they don't tighten on you. Do me a favor and step in front of my vehicle, ma'am. Step in front of my patrol vehicle. Do you have anything Do you have anything Do you have anything in your pockets, ma'am? Do you have anything on you to poke, stick, or stab me? Any drugs, paraphernalia, anything like that? Okay. You have a gun? Return to the side for me. Here. Move over here. I'm just going to check this out, okay? All right. Do me a favor and step over here. My patrol vehicle. Have a seat for me. I'm going to buckle you in, okay? RDR 390 R Alpha 1 wanting custody. I don't know if you're going to get too hot. You can take your phone with you. Now, your makeup bags and all that, is it okay to leave those in the car? Cuz this You can You can make a phone call, but that's all you can do. If you want to call them, you're allowed to call them, but Okay. Give me 1 second, I'll let you call them, okay? Thank you. Who did you run into? >> No. I am, but without a stamp or hat. >> Oh. I don't know why they're flagging me. No one's a notary that's here? All of you? >> We got five people. I mean, I am, I just don't have my stamp yet. >> Alpha 1 keep looking for a notary. Yeah. No notary. Huh? Yeah, if he can. Well, I still got to wait for a notary, so the 85 might get here in time, but if not, do you want to stay? >> Yeah, I'll stay too. >> Okay. How is no one a notary here? >> What is your pass code, ma'am? I'll let you call whoever you need to. I understand, but you can't Who do you need to Who do you need to call, ma'am? Who do you need to call, ma'am? >> Stay tuned to find out exactly what she was charged with and what happened to both of the officers involved in this incident. Sure, she never should have been driving that fast in those conditions, but police shouldn't be playing games with people's lives, either. >> Because I was speeding. >> You want me to come get your car? >> Can you, please? >> He can't come get your car. He can't come and get your car. >> I know. This Okay, apparently he can't come get my car. >> Why? >> I don't know. >> Are you in Cobb County? >> Where does he Where do you go Where does he Where does he live? Okay, have a good day, sir. There's no There's no reason that I should be going to jail right now. >> Okay. >> And four cop cars, that's ridiculous. >> She called the officer a [ __ ] and the officer hung up the phone. Was that inappropriate of the officer? Sarah Webb was charged with speeding and reckless driving, essentially driving too fast for conditions, but every charge was dropped in July 2018 after prosecutors reviewed the body cam footage and refused to pursue the case. The two officers involved, Courtney Brown and Christie Wilson, were fired that same month for violating department policy and damaging public trust in the Roswell Police Department. The incident only came to light after an internal source, disturbed that the video was being watched as entertainment inside the department, leaked the body cam footage to local station 11 Alive, which then started asking tough questions to the police department and the mayor.
