They head inside the victim's house where the true suspect, 35-year-old Steven Lewis, and the 1-year-old girl are nowhere to be found. Medics are on their way. >> Paramedics arrive and begin preparing Kimberly for transport to the hospital. Meanwhile, dispatchers receive another 911 call from Kimberly's own mother. >> My son-in-law, Steven, just called me and telling me don't know what he did to my daughter. I'm calling her phone, she's not answering. I'm driving to the house now. >> Okay, I don't need you don't go there, okay? >> Don't go there? >> Something did happen to your daughter. We're trying to figure it out, okay? I just don't want you to put yourself in a situation. >> Stop it. Pull over. I'm in mom, listen to me. Stop, pull over. >> As the call continues, Kimberly's mother reveals something about the missing 1-year-old that sets the dispatcher on high alert. >> The baby's in the house. >> Okay. >> I got to get the baby. >> Steven called you? >> Yes. >> Do you know where the baby is? >> He dropped the baby off at the next door neighbor and then um he left. >> Officers are sent to check on the baby who is soon confirmed to be safe, unharmed, and with a family member. As the chaotic night continues, a third call reaches dispatchers. This time, from Steven himself. >> Um I just got to have my something going on with my girlfriend. I think I did something bad to her, but I'm turning myself in right now. >> Okay, is this Steven? >> Yes, it's Steven. >> Okay, what what happened tonight? >> I don't know, man. I just don't know, man. I'm going to do the police station. I'm losing my brain, guys. I'm coming to you. I did wrong, man. >> Exactly what Steven did and what caused him to snap will later be answered once police review the entirety of the Ring camera footage. For now, officers meet Steven outside police headquarters and take him into custody. >> Do you have any weapon on you? Okay, are you are you hurt? Like, George you are hurt? Are you cut? >> Are you cut? Where are you cut at? >> On my lower arm, officer. I got some cuts. >> Your hand? Your finger? Your thumb? Okay, but no weapons on you, right? >> No, no, no. >> Okay, you mind if I search you? >> I just for the sake of clarity so we're on the same page, just be aware that we have the suspect in front of headquarters, a victim at the hospital, and a child at a third address. >> They also have the machete recovered on the floorboard of his car. As his interrogation begins, Steven shares his fiance Kimberly has grown increasingly strained. Though they both work, he describes taking on most of the responsibility for their daughter while Kimberly also attends school, leaving him feeling isolated and unappreciated. >> I'm very sad. I'm depressed. I feel like empty. I'm sad. >> This led to him taking drastic measures to cope. >> I just take a little cocaine sometimes. >> Like liquid cocaine? >> Yeah. >> Marijuana? >> Yeah. >> You use marijuana, too? >> Yeah. >> Do you smoke it or do you >> Yeah, I smoke marijuana, yeah. >> [clears throat] >> So, marijuana, liquid cocaine. How how does the the liquid cocaine How's that usually affect you? What do you How do you usually act after that? >> I'm cool. >> Cool. Did you take something the night before this happened? >> Yeah, I was like That's what I'm saying. I was like cuz that's what keep me alive, man. Like I'm not going to say that's good, though. >> Afterwards, Steven's night took a dramatic turn. According to Kimberly, she was sitting on the couch playing Fortnite when Steven tried to take their daughter to bed, but she says the child was scared to go with him. According to Steven, the 1-year-old began to cry, but for a very different reason. >> My daughter gave me crying when I can't see you with the headphone in your head. You keep asking her what's wrong. She's crying for you to be spending time with her. So, that's exactly what happened. That's why she always crying. Every time I come in home, she can't be playing a game for 20 like for like 17 hours. I'm washing that. even to take a shower. I didn't even even want to. Cool. >> Steven says he wanted to put their daughter to sleep right away in order to stay consistent with her sleep schedule, but Kimberly wanted to keep playing the game and suggested he leave the child with her on the couch. >> I got mad and I tried to grab my daughter and she pushing me. And that's when I don't remember anything. >> But he doesn't have to as their ring camera captured what happened next. >> I'M SORRY. >> DO YOU REMEMBER GRABBING THE ring camera? >> Yes, I do. >> Okay. Do you know why you grabbed the ring camera? >> Um I don't remember but I remember I grabbed the camera. >> Okay. So we were, you know, we we were able to watch that that video. Okay. Cuz we we can got to see everything that happened. And what we saw was you you do chase her and you take the machete and you hit her twice. Okay. You hit her in the arm. You fractured her arm, give her a big cut on her arm, and you hit her on top of the head and split her head open. >> Investigators note that at one point Steven swings the machete toward Kimberly's head producing a loud ping sound presumably from her skull. >> I guess that's pretty serious. She's got a I think got a a fracture in the skull. Okay? She's She's fine though. She's She's awake. She's talking. But >> Oh [groaning] man, come on. >> Do you You remember any of that? >> Oh man. >> Do you know why you would have hit her with that? >> Oh [clears throat] man, it is Oh. So I can't remember this Timothy again. >> [clears throat] >> I I want to be honest with you and give you and let you know >> I don't know the jail, man. I just Well, I just >> Oh Steven, as I said, she she's going to be okay. >> Oh man, that's not me. That's my family, man. I was uh >> I get you. >> According to court documents, 35-year-old Steven Lewis was charged with attempted murder, felonious assault, tampering with evidence, domestic violence, and endangering children. After first entering a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity, he changed the plea to guilty in August of 2025 and was sentenced to 8 to 12 years in prison.
