I don't know. There was some party at a beach in Charlotte County and there was a huge fight and some guy was out there stabbing kids. But one of my older son's friends saw it and sent him the video and was like, "Look what just happened to your brother?" >> Yeah. >> So, I know it's out there on video. Um, but these kids were definitely older. >> He said he he does drugs or have you seen him impaired before by any of these dogs? >> Yeah, he was high the other night when he stole money from me. He went down to the gate and I'm sure he bought weed >> on August 12th, 2022 in Puntaorta, Florida. Deputies from the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a missing teenager. Investigators later received a tip that the teen was at the home of a 31-year-old English teacher, Kelly Simpson, employed by Charlotte County Public Schools. When deputies went to Simpson's residence, they found the teenager who had reportedly been picked up by Simpson and concealed in her home despite knowledge of his missing status. Hi there. >> Hi. How are you? >> Good. Good. So, it's uh your son that took off? >> Yeah. >> Devin Jones. Yes. >> All right. How do you spell his first name? >> D E V E N. >> E N. Okay. And I have him as 925 in 2006. >> Yes. >> All right. And um so you said that last time he was found at those apartments uh down the street. >> Okay. >> Is there a friend of his that lives there or something? >> I have no clue. He's changed into his entire friend group to be honest. Um he went from honors classes and a football player to >> whoever these people are. these people are um >> I know he's smoking and drinking. >> I've seen it on his Snapchat. >> Okay. >> Um he's been stealing from us. Um and that's what arose yesterday is he stole $100 out of my wallet. >> Okay. >> Um and he meets people down at the gate to buy weed >> um at the front of the neighborhood. >> Yeah. Cuz they can't get in. >> Um >> so he uses his skateboard right there. >> Okay. Um, and I got really upset with him last night and I said, "You know, I don't understand why you're stealing from us. >> You know, you have a nice home. You have everything you need." >> Um, and he basically said, "I never want to see you again. I don't want to see dad. Don't talk to me. Don't find me. Don't call me." >> Okay. >> Um, this has happened a lot with him over the summer. He met this new friend, Devonte, who I know has had a charge for grand theft. >> Devonte? You think that's who lives at the Charles K? No, his mom I believe um shipped him out of state. >> So he's no longer around >> from what from what I was told. I don't know how true it is. >> Um but that's where he was found last time. >> Okay. So Charleston K Apartments. We'll see where that was. Did that involve us? Uh did we have to go out there and look? >> No, I didn't call you guys at that point >> cuz I was going to say I I didn't see that documented in our >> No, I didn't see that. But he's taken off before. I'm sure it's documented in there, right, >> where you guys have brought him home. >> Right. Okay. So, when when did he take off? >> Um, I want to say it was between 9:40 and 9:50 last night. >> Okay. And I know you gave a description of what he was wearing. He He's on foot, too. >> He's on foot. He's also has a gray Nike backpack. >> Okay. >> That he's had that he's carrying with him. [snorts] >> Okay. Uh, we don't have a picture of him. Uh, I mean, I could find it through, you know, body camera interactions, but um Can I give you one? >> Yeah, give me a picture if you want. >> Yeah, let me grab my phone. >> Yep. Yeah, I'll get mine, too. I'll be right back. >> All right. If you can text your picture over to my cell phone when you're ready. >> Okay. Okay. >> I'll let you know when I got it. Okay. >> And uh >> um and like I will like I'll just I mean I want you guys to have as much information as you can. Um >> Right. >> I don't know. There was some party at a beach in Charlotte County and there was a huge fight >> and some guy was out there stabbing kids, people. >> Okay. What was this? >> He was out there and that's what they did to him. >> Okay. >> Um so I took him to the ER. >> He broke the nose. Yeah. >> Oh crap. Okay. >> A 25-year-old. >> Okay. >> Um >> where was this at again? Uh that it all went down. >> This was in July. >> Okay. >> This was in July. And this is when he sent me this picture and said, "Mom, somebody broke my nose." >> Where was it at though? Here in uh >> It was here in Charlotte County. >> Okay. Was it at a park or something? >> Yeah, I was at like the um the beach park down the street. >> Okay. Cool. >> Um and my oldest son is um at college. M >> and he and he sent him that picture. So he came home for a week >> and that's when he text my older son, I'm at Charleston K, come get me. >> Okay. >> And that's when he came home. We took him to the ER. >> We did all that. >> Okay. So right now you you pretty much have no no idea where he could be at. That's just an idea based on where he was found last time. >> Uh and that's when he was found with Devonte, right? This Devonte guy. Okay. >> Yeah. >> All right. So, that all went down a couple weeks ago at the >> week ago park. Uh, >> yeah. >> Down the street from >> Yeah. And actually, I don't know who it was. Um, but one of my older son's friends saw it. >> Mhm. >> And sent him the video and was like, "Look what just happened to your brother." >> Yeah. >> So, I know it's out there on video. Um, but these kids were definitely older. >> Mhm. Okay. >> And and Devin was telling his older brother, he's like, "Yeah, everybody thinks I'm just 18." So, I'm not sure if he's telling people that. So, he's hanging around an older crowd, >> right? Okay. >> Is what that's telling me. >> Which is not very good for him because they're up to no good. And >> Exactly. And that's my concern and my worry. >> Yeah. Is he in school? >> He is in school. He did not go to school today. I got a call from the school. >> When was the first day of school for him? >> Wednesday. >> Okay. He's already missed the day, huh? >> Yep. >> All right. So, which school does he go to? >> Charlotte High. And is this the the longest he's done this for that he's taken off or? >> Um, no. But we had a really long conversation that school's in session. Um, he had told us over the summer when we didn't hear from him for a couple days that he was at a trap house. No clue what that is or what goes on there, >> right? >> Um, you know, we definitely don't do anything like that. >> Yeah. >> So, I I I don't know. I know he's with the older crowd. all his friends that he used to hang out with from football, he's just kind of pushed them to the side. >> Okay. Which is the crowd he should be hanging out with right now. Or at least that should be his friend group. But >> Right. >> Okay. So, you say he he does drugs and alcohol. Have you seen him impaired before by any of these? >> Yeah, he was high the other night when he stole money from me. He went down to the gate >> and I'm sure he bought weed. >> Mhm. Okay. >> And this isn't the first time he stole from us. I mean, he stole over $1,500 out of our safe. >> Wow. Okay, that's big right there. Yeah, you should have I mean, and I know as a parent, >> you probably try to avoid getting him in trouble, >> right? But I know press charges. >> Yeah. Other parents are just like, he stole from us. He needs to learn his lesson. But then again, you sit there and wonder what what that'll do to his long-term chances in life, >> right? And you know, that's my whole thing. But then, you know, it was that money and then it was my daughter's babysitting money and then it was another $100 for me. And literally, I came home last night from my daughter's cheer. I put my purse on my counter cuz I had been leaving it in my room. >> I went to the bathroom, washed my hands, and in that that instant, >> that's how quick that's how quick he was. >> And the only reason I know is cuz I took my daughter to the store to get a sketchbook for school and it was gone. So, I had 126 and the 100 was missing. >> Okay. And all right, let's see what else. He has no cell phone, right? >> No, he broke it. >> Okay. No cell phone. And so he's not using anything to communicate right now at least. >> Um I'm sure possibly his Snapchat account >> is the only thing, you know, off a friend's phone or something. >> What about your your other kids? Do they have access to any of his social medias just to see what kind of activity he's got going on? >> With him having a phone, he hasn't been posting anything. >> All right. Okay. >> Um but I asked my son who's in Pennsylvania and he's like, "Mom, I haven't heard from him." >> And I'm not trying to get him involved cuz he's up there on a full ride football scholarship. So I was like, "You need to focus on you." >> Right. Right. >> But I just said I said, "Have you heard from your brother?" He said, "No." And my daughter said the same thing. >> Okay. Well, that cell phone you uh you texted that picture to. Let's see. I got it. You got it. So, I did. Is that a good enough picture? >> Yeah. It's a great picture. Cuz a lot of times what these kids will do, they'll they'll deny being who we think they are. And then where they're holding people until we determine if it is or it's not the person we need to be looking for. So, with the picture, it's pretty much they can't deny, you know. >> Okay. >> So, what's the next step or process, I guess? So, what I'm going to do is I'm going to get myself and another coworker of mine working to see if we can find them. We can we contact friends and people that we know may associate with them >> and you know the word starts spreading. It spreads really quickly cuz then you got like random kids calling us. Hey, yeah, I heard you were looking for this person and I think I may know where he is. So, it usually works out pretty good but it takes a few hours. So most times we can we can have it resolved within a couple hours. But what's going to happen is if enough time goes by that I just don't feel like I'm making any progress, I'll actually have to come to you and I'll ask you if you want to report them as a missing person. Here's here's the reason why. Technically, when somebody who's under 18 isn't where they're supposed to be by their parents uh wishes, they're technically missing. >> Mhm. And and the reason why that's almost uh it's good to do is because let's say right now he commits a crime or something like that. It can't come back and harm you in the future because you've already reported it to us and reported him missing. At that point you've let everybody know that his actions are not necessarily your responsibilities. >> It's when >> you know you get the call where you know you know we'll call a parent and say, "Hey, did you know your your kid's in a stolen car right now?" on there like I I didn't know that, you know, >> you know, and that's my fear. Like my fear is like I'm going to find him dead or hurt or >> Right. No, I I get it. And the reason why I asked about about the the impairment of drugs is that if you ever feel like he's impaired by drugs or alcohol, you can call us and we can have a Marshman act in. So Marshman Act, if you look it up, it's uh it's protected by HIPPA. >> Okay. >> Yeah. It's if you need to answer that. Yeah. Go ahead. >> Marshman. No, I'm just putting it in there. So, >> Marshman Act. Yeah. So, so the Marshman Act, the way it works is, let's say that we arrive and we do confirm that somebody is >> very impaired by drugs or alcohol. We can take him in to a mental health facility where they uh you know, treat the fact that he's going through these um he he's using drugs, he's using alcohol there. So, they're counselors there. >> It's a mand mandatory 3-day hold. So, it works similar to the Baker Act, but the Baker Act is for those askuc, >> right? Okay. So, he should be on medicines right now. Do you know if he has them? >> He does not have them. >> Okay. So, see that's right there. Another thing that we can use um to help him out whether he realizes it or not. So, the Baker Act is mostly for when uh people threaten to harm themselves or others, and then they're they're basically a danger to themselves or others, then we can Baker act them. You know, it's the three-day hold at the mental health facility. But the the Marshman Act is similar. The only thing is that it addresses uh impairment by drugs or alcohol. >> So, all we have to do is show up and say, "Oh, yeah, he's he's beyond messed up because of the weed, the drugs, or the alcohol." So, then we just take them right away. It's HIPPA protected so it doesn't show up on his permanent record. >> Okay. >> And uh so because it's not criminal >> so no future employer >> act is for minors. >> Uh it it applies for anybody minors or adults >> just same as a bank minor and adults >> and uh actually you have a lot of say when you're the parent that's reporting it. >> Okay. So, uh, so like I said, that's, uh, both Marshman Act and Baker Act are protected by HIPPA means that no future employer can go back and and open those records up because it's all medical basically. >> So, keep that in mind. Look at some of the stuff that's on the internet about Marshman Act that works well. >> Well, um, I have a um, I worked down in Fort Myers and my friend's husband is a deputy for Charlotte County. Okay. and he had told me something about a scared program >> that you guys run. >> Yeah. I don't know if that's happening anymore. They Yeah, they used to have it pretty often but then with co that they took >> and that's what he said. He's like I'm not 100% sure if they have it but it might be something for you. >> Right. I'm new with this agency so I haven't heard of it Ronnie. So I've >> Yeah. Our other friend I don't know if you know John Waterhouse. >> Oh yeah. >> Yeah. So he's a really good family friend. So that's who I text. I was like hey Deon took off. He's like, "You need to call you and you've got to make a report." Cuz this is now the second or third time. Like he'd sneak out and go to parties and come home at, >> you know, 10:00 in the morning. And that's not how we raise our kids. You know, I have three. >> The other two are great. You know, he just needs a little bit more than everybody else. But, you know, like I told my husband, it's not a bed and breakfast here. You're not going to come and go as you please. You know, sleep all day >> and then stay up all night and sneak out. >> He's born in 2006. Huh. How old does that make him? >> 15. >> Okay. He'll be 16 soon. So, all right. I'll notify you of anything. You do the same. Um I'm going to go and see if we can locate where he could be at. So, and you haven't driven to the Charleston K place, right? Cuz you don't know exactly where it is. >> I don't. I mean, I know where it is. Like, I'll be honest. Um I just drove through there like around the parking lot just to see if I recognize a car that might have been here to pick him up or if he, you know, was walking around. But I didn't. And that was, you know, 30 minutes ago. >> Okay. So, >> after I dropped my daughter off the chair, >> you don't you don't know of any of of his uh friends or girlfriend or anything like that? Anybody? >> I mean, I know all his old friends that he doesn't talk to. >> Okay. So, he's really not talking to them as much. He might they may not have >> Yeah. And I mean, his friend Jaden called who was supposed to actually spend the night tonight, which is a positive influence in his life. >> And um he's like, "Hey, Devon wasn't at school." And I and so I told him he's like, "Man, I don't know why he's doing this." and just not playing football. So, people are aware. >> Yeah. >> And the ground he's around isn't good. >> And he and this friend of his is obviously aware that he's not home. >> And the other place I know he's been at is um I don't know the name of the apartments, but they're right across the street from the back half of Charlotte High of the football field. >> Okay. Yeah. Yeah, I know. Yeah, I know exactly where that's at. So, he's all the way up there. >> So, I know he's been up there, too. >> Okay. How's he getting around? is probably friends are >> um the last time that his friend Devonte was here and they left they were with his like 25-year-old uncle or something. >> Okay. All right. Well, let me do a little bit of uh digging and we'll be in touch. Um >> Okay. And you'll contact me by cell phone? >> Yeah. Yeah. I'll I'll reach out to your phone and um >> Yeah. But just keep in mind you may want to report him missing. It's not criminal to be reported missing, but it >> Okay. you feel like you're not getting anywhere, you'll let me know and I'll be like, "Yes, let's do it." >> Right? Cuz it's also liability on us. Whenever we feel like we just aren't making very good progress towards our goal of locating him, then what we do is we we put him on a national database along with a state database. And if anybody finds him or comes comes across him >> on a traffic stop or just a party or anything, we have to hold him there until we contact you and then we make you aware. I mean, this works great cuz if he's in Northport, you know, we don't know what's going on in Northport or in Puna Gorda, the city of Puna Gorda. >> But then when you report him and you put him on that uh database, then everybody has access. Yep. As soon as we run the name, the our dispatcher will say this person's uh reported missing out of uh Charlotte County. >> Okay. >> So, that's how we know. >> So, um I'm going to get started and I'll update you with anything I have. >> Okay. I appreciate it. Thank you so much for your time. >> No problem. >> Miss Simpson, I know we talked to you before. Please going to read off the search warranties just so you know what's going on.
