She didn't have like any like pool gear on her. She was totally by herself. Mom went to sleep or something. We fell asleep at least like like maybe right at 6:00. I don't leave her with anybody unless she goes to daycare. She's always with me. I've never been away from On July 28th, 2024, officers responded to a call about a 26-year-old Flaggler County woman who allegedly left her 2-year-old child unsupervised in a kitty pool at their Palm Coast home. Deputies arrived after a neighbor reported seeing the toddler alone in the water for an extended period while the mother was found asleep inside the residence, unaware of the situation, prompting an investigation by the Flaggler County Sheriff's Office. Nice to meet you. I'm Deputy Coma. Good. And this is my husband, Dave. He's on the porch. The child I'm not going to say it in front of her, but that pink pool right there, she was in that by herself. I've asked her mother how we knocked on the door. door was already open. I hollered for them. My husband hollered for them and nobody has come out yet. Okay. So, you know, she was in that pool by herself and we didn't want to see her drowned. I know of friends that their children have drowned from them just Yeah. So, that she didn't have like any like pool gear on her. No, she was totally by herself. Mom's asleep or something. Okay. I don't know what they're doing. Okay. So, so what's going on today? Oh, I literally I was just sleeping. Yeah, that's all. Did you guys Did you guys have like a long night? Yeah, it is. It is 6:00. Um, all right. So, uh, the neighbor over there, she found her in this pool, this little baby pool. And uh she like opened your door and she said she was hollering for you guys. And guys must know where does it where's the child usually at? Where do you guys sleep? In your room's over to the left and she's in the she's in the middle room. No, not middle room. In the front the front room. Yeah. Yeah. Just sleep. This is the first time she actually done some bull crap like that. How old is she? She just turned three. She just turned three. Yeah. Who What's her name? Naa. Naa. Oh my god. You got to get one of those [ __ ] How do you spell Na? E V E N E V H. E H What's her last name? A O N. Owen Ammons. Yes. What's your date of birth? Um 620 21. Well, they said they've been, you know, she's been with them for 20 minutes. So, and they were just concerned for your guys safety because she they opened the door and yelled at you guys for about 20 minutes and you guys weren't answering. So, she was concerned if you guys weren't even they opened the door. They said the door was open. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Oh, interesting. You need one of those things that where you can turn it and they can't actually open. My brother got those plastic knobs on doorork knobs. Do you guys have your licenses on you by any chance? Do you mind go grabbing them? Uh, are we going to be arrested? What's up? Are we going to be arrested? I'm uh This has never This has never ever happened before. I don't know. How in the world she opened the hand door? Yeah. What time What time did you guys go to bed? And when was the last time you saw her? Well, we had taken a nap with her. That's why I don't understand. Like, she was sleeping with you guys. Usually, she would wake me up. This has never ever happened before. Usually, she wakes me up and lets me know, "Hey, mommy." or you know let me know if she's hungry or if she you know she's I'm a very alert mom. I this has never happened. No this is she's never walked outside the house before or anything like that. She the the only one time that she did was Fourth of July cuz we were over at their house for well I have another neighbor like a street over and we were at their party for Fourth of July and everything and we had stopped at their house for a little bit cuz we just cut through the corner at their backyard cuz the house is right over there and I had came home, we both had came home and I just changed both of our outfits cuz we were both in bathing suits and they didn't have a pool or anything and I just wanted to get out of the baiting suit and I had the door was left open like this and she had just I mean I had eyesight of her though and she ran over to the neighbor's house so that was you know I watched her that time but this time like this this has never happened. Yeah. Yeah. Do you do you understand uh you know I mean she's a 3-year-old child that's like about a foot of water. A child can drown in 3 or 4 in of water. You understand how dangerous that can be? And uh do you mind talking do you mind talking to uh my partner here for a sec? All right. I got to ask you a few questions. Okay. Before I do, I'm going to read you your rights. That doesn't mean you're in trouble. Are you arresting me? I have to come up with that conclusion. I'm just going to read your rights. It's just a formality. I don't have anybody to shoot my I I've never been away from her like that. I can't like this never happens. I Okay, but do you understand this? We're going to work through that together. So, let's try to get through the question. I promise you. First of all, I'm deputy coma. The reason why I'm here is obviously this incident that happened with your child. Um, these are your rights. You have the right to remain silent and anything you say may be used as evidence against you. You have the right to talk to an attorney and have him or her with you at now or at any time during questioning. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed to represent you. If at any time you wish to stop talking or have an attorney present, all questioning will be stopped at your request. Do you understand these rights? With these rights in mind, are you willing to talk to me? Yes, sir. All right. Okay. At what time was the last time you saw your child? Um, we went to sleep maybe. I mean, we we usually don't take late evening naps, but I I just hurt my neck the other day when I was putting up the cameras and fell off the ladder, so my neck's been hurting and I just Okay. She was in the bed with us and we just we were watching a movie and we just fell asleep. Um, probably we fell asleep at least like like maybe right at 6:00. Okay. Okay. And and the child, I'm sorry, I forget the child's name. Naa. Naa. Naa was with you in the bed when you fell asleep around 6:00. Yeah. She was literally laying on his chest. She That's why I don't understand. She's never came out of the door like this. She's never like freaking know. This is just a mess. I literally just caught this pool yesterday and I was going to take it down cuz when I went to put it up the the top of it doesn't blow up and I but I still literally playing it like earlier today before it started raining just to you know get some energy out and stuff cuz we don't really come outside like that because the gunks are so bad. Right. All right. So the pool the pool was filled all day today, right? You didn't fill it today at all. It was filled yesterday. it. No, it it was filled yesterday and then I brought her but I didn't drain it out yesterday because I was going to bring her back out to play it today. But when I realized the thing wasn't the top part wasn't blowing up, it doesn't hold sustainably like it would if it would blow up. So I I still let her play in it a little bit today and then we just brought her in the house. She played in it for maybe like 2 hours earlier, but I but I sat outside and watched her. I I would never let her do that unsupervised cuz I I've seen things that can happen like that and that's why I just don't understand because she's never came out of the house like this without like the one time that she ran over to the neighbor's house I had view of her and Yeah. Yeah. You you were mentioning that happened July 4th, right? Yes. Okay. Um when when you woke up, who woke up first? Was it him or you? and noticed that she wasn't in bed. Uh, he did and I I literally woke up as he was walking outside to talk to you and or whichever one of you was up here and I just ran out the door when I saw Okay. Yeah. And and you woke up at what time? Uh, it was like 6:30. Okay. when I or about 6:30 when I saw that when I woke up and saw that you guys were that whichever one of you were here was out here and he was walking out to the end of the driveway. Okay. But I this never happens. Okay. Never happens. And are you the biological mother in Na? Yes. Okay. Who is he to Naa? Uh he's he's my boyfriend, but Na's dad isn't in the picture. Yeah. No. Okay. He's your boyfriend. Is he is he to you like a caretaker to Na as well? Uh what what do you mean is a night like is he a caretaker like if you were if if you leave the house does he watch her? No no no no I don't I didn't I I don't leave my daughter with anybody. No. Okay. Okay. All right. Um has she ever been You say that pool's recent recently new. Yeah. I I literally just bought it yesterday. Okay. Okay. And you say she has she has not done this besides on July 4th? Yeah, she's never done this besides on July 4th. But when it when it happened on July 4th, I have a carpet right at my front door and it's not easy. It's not easy to pull the door open. Okay. Um but but somebody had I wasn't I don't even know but somebody had tried to break into the house and there like the door jam is is broken and that's the only reason I'm thinking that she might have been able to open the door but I Okay, like this has never happened. Is is that door is that door locked ever? Yeah, I I keep it locked, but I was just telling him I I'll just have to get the little handle thing that goes on the door knob and then I'm still going to get a chain to go on the top of it to lock it from the inside because this like I said, this is this does not happen. I don't know if it's just because we got the pool and she wanted to come outside and play in it, but that's not like Okay. This has never happened. I don't let her get out of my view like that. Yeah. All right. And is the door like traditional like twist knob to open it or is it just like a simple pull or anything like that? No, you got to twist it to open it, but the I usually lock the screen door too cuz she doesn't know how to lock it and so she's she's the door handle's low. She's within arms reach of the door handle. Have you ever seen her reaching for it beforehand? No, she doesn't she doesn't she doesn't do this. She doesn't open the doors in my house. And usually when we take a nap and she wakes up, she'll she'll wake me up. I I don't know. It just might. Okay. I don't ever let this happen. This has never happened before. I cannot lose my job. Well, we're we're not in the business of preventing a mother from being their child. We don't make those decisions. But since a juvenile is involved, we have to contact DCF. No, I can and they will do their investigation as well and they will reach out to you. They will talk to her. You know, they will talk to him. They will talk to anyone involved. I can't be away from her from now on. Okay. I've never left her side beside that day. I Okay. And you said that she usually wakes you up when she wakes up if if I'm still asleep. Yeah. But this rarely happens. I just my neck's been hurting. I literally just put this camera the camera up the other day and I fell off of the ladder and I'm I broke my neck back in 2022 in a car accident in Indiana and it just kind of like I it was hurting so so bad. And she she said something about mommy I would have taken night. So, she curled up in the bed and we fell asleep. But I said it was normal like any other time. And like none of this ever happened. And I don't even know why she came out of the door like that. It's not her fault. I should have Nothing like this ever happened. Well, I mean, she's all right. You're all right. So, everyone here is all right. Okay. This is not okay. No, I understand. But everyone's safe right now. So, just take a deep breath. Take a deep breath. Um, do you do you have any questions for me? Cuz I'm going to talk I'm going to talk to him. I just don't want to be away from my daughter like that. I don't like this never happens. Like, if I get arrested, I don't have any money to keep her and I don't I'm sorry, but I don't trust any man to keep my daughter like that. I don't care. Okay. Okay. I don't leave her with anybody unless she goes to daycare. She's always with me. I've never been away from Okay. All right. Do you mind grabbing her for me so I can talk to him? I did. She said she said no. Okay. You're talking to him. Okay. I'm sorry. You can still talk to your story. You know what I mean? Yeah. But um I think as far as um you still fine as far as if she's not considering the just her. Okay. What's happening now? I'm going I'm going to do the same as I did with her. This is just a formality. You're not you're not in any trouble. I'm going to read you your rights. All right. Um, as you can tell, no one's in handcuffs. Just something we have to do. Comes court of law. Oh, yeah. I know. Cuz somebody else actually didn't do that uh from y'all team that. And that's how my charges got dropped. All right. Well, I'm Deputy Ka. My inquiry here is just figuring out what happened with Naa and how she got away. Um, these are your rights. You have the right to remain silent in anything you say. may be used as evidence against you. You have the right to talk to an attorney and have him or her with you now or any time during questioning. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed to represent you. Okay. She doesn't does she get out much? Does she like go? She's really painful. Okay. All right. So, you know, and how long have you been with Cassidy? Two months. Two months. Okay. So, you don't really consider yourself a caregiver. Caregiver at all? I'm not going to say I don't care. Yeah. Yeah. No, no, no. I'm not saying you don't care. I'm just saying in terms of like guardianship. Guardianship. Oh. Um I mean, I guess not. No. Okay. All right. know. Um, so what time did you guys fall asleep? Um, and were all you guys in the same room? Literally in the same room. What time it is? Um, I'd say about 5 maybe like around 5 or 4 maybe. I'm not sure. But we literally just fell asleep, man. And what happened before you guys fell asleep? Were you guys doing something? Watching something? Yeah, we were. We were watching something. She was with us like she was laying down with us like going to sleep with us in in in the room in the in your the bedroom is to the far left of the house. Yeah. Okay. Um did at any point you hear or anything as Naa was getting up and out of the bed? No. She usually would shake us or just say something, but she didn't say nothing. It's only because of that thing. That's it. Yeah. That's literally it. Like Yeah. And when when was that purchased? Yesterday. Yesterday. All right. Cool. Um what time did you guys wake up and realize Naa wasn't in the room with you guys? About 30 minutes ago. So, okay. And you immediately Yeah. Right. Did you look around the house?
