currently the chief Deputy for the Navajo County Sheriff's Office Navajo County is up in the northeastern portion of of Arizona I think it's the best County in uh in Arizona I'm a little biased on that so the chief Deputy is uh is basically the number two to the sheriff the sheriff is the elected official and then the chief Deputy is typically um appointed by the sheriff the way I kind of describe it is you you're acting like you're the chief of police so uh although the sheriff is the agency head um the the the chief Deputy kind of runs the day-to-day operations really all the boring stuff of of a law enforcement agency is what I get to do been here almost 5 years uh working for Sheriff klouse and working with the great men and women here at the Navajo County Sheriff's Office is uh quite the treat we are in downtown White River Arizona this is kind of the uh the Central Point uh the capital if you will of the White Mountain Apache uh reservation as a child I lived here for about a year I went to kindergarten Here in White River my dad was a uh Arizona highway patrolman it started in 1973 and this was his first Duty station this is the culta sack right here and this H this green house over here on the corner that's the one that I lived in back in 1973 every one of these communities have kind of a strange to those that don't live on the reservation a strange name so we got Cemetery we got One Step Beyond got Dark Shadows Ben Gay up north is jurass Jurassic Park we've got up by the hospital is uh Rainbow City um we've got Chinatown Knots Landing there's all kinds of uh unique names for uh for the neighborhoods you know in a typical City where you say yeah I live at you know 123 North Main Street very rarely do you get dispatched to a u a residence here it's more like it's two doors down from so and so it's the blue house that's how and it is such a tight-knit community here that's how they everybody knows where everybody lives uh this is kind of the downtown area here as you can see there's lots of cars and stuff in the area lots of activities going on right now because of the uh tribal fair and rodeo this is is their big big event annually we're going to have deputies and lots of Staff down here uh working uh assisting the Tribal Police with different calls and stuff down here many reservations around the country are called are dry are dry reservations White Mountain Apache is not you can buy packaged liquor here they don't have a bar you can't buy whiskey you can only buy packaged beer and you can see up in here there'll be this lots of people up in the trees and whatnot but yeah this is called The Sundowner liquor store and uh this is a very popular place as as you can imagine especially on a weekend like this this place does create a lot of problems what happens is they come in a lot of them will come in and the ones with a problem they'll buy their booze and they'll go up here in the trees and they'll just they'll get extremely intoxicated and a lot of times they become victims victims of crime whether it's a soul sex assaults thefts what have you over the years I've gone in here a lot with the police department because somebody's been beaten to a pulp and their beer was taken from them or their money or they were assaulted you know something they've done a good job theyve gone in here and trimmed up some trees where you can actually be in the parking lot and see where years ago it was just thick and you couldn't see up in there and it was it would kind of generate a a great place for people to be I'm okay just stay out the road all right okay all right have a good day yeah like I said earlier this is this is not a dry reservation but they do not allow um hard alcohol that was obviously a bottle of vodka um you can drink down here you can't drink in public like that um or have and he's basically what they call public intoxication so he would be in violation of tribal code for public intoxication um he wasn't causing any heartache so there's really no sense in taking in you know a Hardline enforcement action on that but he can't have that open container of alcohol here on the reservation so the key thing here is is that came from somewhere else because they don't sell that here on the White Mountain Apache so the bootlegging issue is very is is a big deal so what they what a lot of people do is they cat gather a bunch of money uh and they run up to Pinetop to the Circle K or any you know Walmart or wherever up there and they'll and they'll buy a whole bunch of booze and of alcohol that you can't get on the reservation here and then they'll they'll come down here and they'll sell it at extremely escalated prices and U it's against Tribal Law to to uh bootleg uh the liquor so it's a big problem um it's a big problem uh they just don't don't have you know the the the resources to to address to address that in the way that it needs to be addressed so um I hated to do that for that guy there but he was already as you could tell he was already pretty heavily intoxicated and and uh By the time he'd have finished off that bottle um he might have been in some sort of a medical problem there so um kind of kind of hurts your feelings a little bit to make him pour it out uh but it's illegal to have and bottom line he doesn't really need anymore today so so yeah this Fairgrounds down here this is the big event for for this community it brings people from all over the western part of the United States Team Roping bull riding Bron riding you name it it's all we've not had any radio communications whatsoever here in the in the community of White River our radio infrastructure 5 years ago was is extremely Antiquated we had a very small picture of of area that was covered by Communications which is a problem it's a in a very rural County that we're in the deputies are working alone many of the times and the one Lifeline we had is right here in this radio and it wasn't it wasn't working we were very fortunate to get a couple different grant opportunities to uh to invest into our our radio system so over about the last three years we've invested right around about $6 million into our into our radio infrastructure where we went from four radio sites throughout the county that's 10,000 square miles to we are at 8 currently uh they just lit up number nine which we're going to test right now let me get out and try it outside takes a second for it to register with the with the LTE so LTE is basically it it'll work off of the cell the cell tower system all right we'll give this a try Navajo 2 radio check on D2 LTE come on loud and clear how do you receive you are loud and clear thank you that's 139 that's fantastic I don't know that we've ever ever ever been able to talk to Holbrook on a portable from this Fairgrounds so uh gained a lot of ground in the Communications Department so that's good news this is going to be the main command post for this uh for this operation we'll go in here and check it out I think they have a briefing tonight at like 6 or something so we'll go in and check out the we'll check out the briefing about all this did you get a release order saying that you weren't supposed to be drinking alcohol or anything like that obviously you're not since you're under 21 but did the court specifically tell you that as well yep okay and you're out here you drinking again tonight I'm not like the way the way I was like I I'm not saying that you're falling down drunk right now yeah I would can't be drinking like he said you can't be drinking I for domestic violence and all that but I'm okay and you had a warrant so they're going to talk to you a little bit and and they'll they'll deal with you the best that they can all right so this guy came up to us he uh smelled of alcohol he admitted to drinking he told us he's 19 years old one of our guys just recognized him from being into our nav County jail for charges of under underage consumption of alcohol uh we turn him over to the White Mountain Apache police department and come to find out he got into domestic violence and he's a suspect from earlier this morning so they went ahead and placed him into custody they had probable cause for his arrest based on the incident prior and along with the UNR consumption of alcohol how's it going man over yo cuz I'm not even doing nothing to I was just walking around does does your probation allow you to drink huh cuz I I just turned 21 too that guy wanted a selfie that's hey does a does I didn't I I didn't steal any bottles or nothing do um allowed him to drink no come on you guys watch bro watch no I'm not watching my feet watch your knees come on watch your knees bro no I'm
