today on Alpha responder Network inside that room they got screens that completely surround you and they do computer-based scenarios when I started we didn't have a training center we're trying to do more real life training she was just swerving off the road a little bit and the baby's not with her right now this is our housing area what are you doing we are on a mission to reveal an unseen side of law [Music] enforcement join us as we ride along with the nation's bravest Alfred responders risking their lives daily to protect what matters most this is Alpha responder Network hey guys Kent here with armm hey real briefly I want to talk about our sponsor of this episode armored Republic look the reality is we're out here every day with law enforcement seeing the crazy and dangerous stuff that they see our friends at armored Republic will kind enough to send out these plate carriers and keep us safe as well armored Republic is the number one direct to consumer armor manufacturer in the world they guarantee same day shipping in their A2 armor plates and testudo carrier do yourself a favor and pick up your play haes today you will freaking love them check them out at armed republic.com use code ar24 for 10% off your order from September 1st to the [Music] [Applause] 31st it's one of 15 Counties in Arizona Navajo C is the fourth largest geographically in Arizona I we like the n9th or 10th in the country as far as Geo uh geographically with 10,000 square miles so it's big County so we have the three reservations within the county that makes up around 50% of the land mass snowflake kind of sits right in the middle I happen just to live in Snowflake it was founded by my great great grandfather I'm the fifth generation to live in this town and it was my grandfather when I was a little kid he was the sheriff of Navajo County so that's what I grew up wanting to do and I looked up to him and so you talk about the American dream you know you get a live that every day so it's kind of fun this is snowflake it's where we're starting our day off today so we're going to go out maybe take a few calls go chase down some of these deputies see what they're doing uh we'll head up to the jail check that out and uh see what else is going on this is the Jake flake Emergency Services Institute ran by NPC but it's fire and police the high school dual enrollment where they can get their fire science class and their EMT classes they can get them here as high school students then it also has uh full-time law enforcement but they have a driving track here they have a burn Tower there they do some Tower runs and stuff for training there we have our police cars here but we got the simulator training we got a shooting range got a DT room but it's all the local PDS and the Sheriff's Office and and the state jumps in and we all do it and we train here locally kind of it's kind of cool deal when I started we didn't have a training center have you ever seen those simulation deals inside that room it's one of those they got screens that completely surround you and they do computer-based scenarios that they film in in and around Arizona and they have real life actors and then the trainer running the computer can you know and they have the scenario where they don't comply or they pull a weapon or they do comply you can make an arrest based off of how the officer the deputy is given commands it's a good judgmental uh type of training for the deputies you know get out of the weather and it's a safe training environment that they do it [Music] in in addition to our video that we're showing you the video screens they'll do some real life scenarios so the deputy will come here load up with the training taser cartridges the training gun the training rounds go up there hit the different scenarios so the deputies just come schedule it come spend an hour here get the training that way we're always operating at the best uh best we can you know so what are we doing here Marty um we're trying to do more real life training instead of doing um the video which is virtra all the time which people get used to it they see the same thing over and over again we're trying to bring in some Munitions it gets predictable right it does get very predictable you start to know every scenario you start to know every routine you get to figure out what they're going to to say back to you I mean we're only limited to what we can have them say back and what we can have them how they can have them react so so you'll set up different scenarios down there yes the first one is a traffic stop second one is a code 34 which is a broken down vehicle and then the third one I can't say they're making it up down there as you go okay and everybody will run through these yes it it's part of our annual annual yearly training 18 months ago we dedicated and built a peace officer memorial for all law enforcement officers who've died in the line of duty in Navajo County the city of scholo gave the land gave a lot of dollars the county did a lot and we had this built there's these 17 names so it's any police officer deputy sheriff that worked lived in Navajo County that died in the line of duty Bob Varner was killed January 2nd 1989 he was actually shot on December 31st 1988 which was my grandfather's very last day in office my grandfather's term ended obviously the end of the year and was retiring and left all his stuff in Holbrook for the new sheriff and I remember this I was a little kid called up to Holbrook and says hey how's everything is New Year's Eve how's H things are fine all right then the deputy comes by his house like an hour later and says Bob Varner just been shot he made a traffic stop on I40 up in Winslow and it was two bank robbers at a flag they had an automatic weapon soon as he' let him up for it was a not for the the initial crime didn't even know why they were there let him up and Shot Bob got shot in the neck and died 3 days later but my grandpa then spent his last day in office they pinned these guys down at a home between H Brook and Winslow they were shooting automatic fire at them my grandfather had a revolver in a 3030 with several of the deputies and spent the night in the ditch taking gunfire on his last day in office and then Bob Varner ended up dying but his wife uh Kathy Varner just died a couple years ago but we every year we held a memorial in Winslow at his grave you placed a wreath on it and you never thought as a little kid remembering that night that you wouldd be there with the the Widow 30 years later uh so it was always kind of special family to me and all these names are there's there's story behind all these I love history I love America I love American history I'm reading a book right now that is how the best did it I think is the name of it again I'm not a good quote guy but it took eight of this author's opinion of his eight best presidents and uh their leadership styles and their skills Washington Jefferson both Roosevelts Reagan was one Kennedy was one he just dissects O Lincoln how linol the number one right probably one of the most uh brightest individuals that's ever held the office according you know to a lot of these authors how was Lincoln a able to bring a broken Union back together how was Washington able to be the first president of a new nation that was literally building who they were going to be so you see all that and all these type of individuals Roosevelt through World War II they had some challenges we have challenges in law enforcement I feel like every day it's it wasn't for my staff and family that helps it's like how do how does one person do it so you look at individuals like that I love just to read about it how did they cope with those types of things and that's what I try to formulate my my thought process or decisions after always being true to who I am I think we're all individuals but I think you can learn something from people's experiences that's why I like history just one thing I always try to I guess it helps me so when you're just driving through the county you see one of your deputies on the side of the road go stop out with him see how he's doing hey ain't bugging you am I no what's going on buddy I'm on the vehicle's from Vermont but she lives in Pine toop Lakeside oh is that right yeah she was just swerving off the road a little bit she said she has a newborn the baby's not with her right now she's coming down to go to the meat market just wanted to make sure she wasn't intoxicated appreciate it all right be safe take it easy see yeah there's several services that the sheriff's office is different than a police department and one of them is running a Detention Center every county has one and it's always under the direction or the control of the sheriff so all in custody arrests felony misdemeanor are turned over to the sheriff and then they work in correspondence with the court it's big responsibility it's big part of our budget half our deputies half our staff works in the jail half our budget goes you know to jail operations so this is the main gate that any Deputy would come up to if they had an [Music] arrest this place is busy all right you got to leave your gun here no guns on me so this is the sally port this is when a deputy or a police officer they'll pull right in here and this is the first door they'll go in you're supposed to search them in the field but these guys that'll dress them out you'll still find knives we find car keys cell phones money a lot of them will will try to conceal money drugs if it's anything that that you can't get inside of an institution there's a they're trying to smuggle it in uh because it becomes a hot item and and the the price of those items go way up skyh high so when they initially first come in they're going to be put here on this bench before they're accepted on the medical side we have 24-hour nursing so the nurses will come down they'll assess them some of them come in in such bad shape whether they're so drunk that they're not functioning we've had people come in that had a gunshot wound and so they send them out to Advanced Medical clearance to one of the local hospitals once the doctors there have cleared them for incarceration then they can come back then my deputies come in they do a complete pat down first here before they even walk around to do the vbc which is a visual body check we'll start their paperwork process that's what my I have a Cadet and a deputy doing right now everyone has to shower so we dress them out they have to shower once they're showered then we put them through this big guy here that's our body scanner they have to pass all those checkpoints before we even house them into a cell with anyone and that conveyor belt moves their body through the entire machine and does a complete x-ray of their body so that we can check it the same gender is who uh checks that picture or image of the body and then if there's something in question um they will call a second opinion in andol that that scan is very very you go ahead very clear so you pick out you can pick out um specific organs you can you can see the intestines um you can see the bladder so it's a very very clear to find uh resolution so that you're picking up all that stuff upstairs is Mel housing we have two large housing units upstairs along with our kitchen laundry and medical facility downstairs we have our females and then working inmates working male inmates and also like super max or special needs inmates they all house downstairs also our veterans stand right there for me unroll your pants please good mom you want to stand over here these guys are all excited lot they're going out to the wck yards that are on both sides here it's not too hot today so they're going to be able to get some fresh [Music] air no what are you [Applause] doing can you please said we could ask for the call but are you live in J2 no no I'm me I'm in J yeah you don't belong there go over there my so this is our housing area with there's four pods that we can house in here it's got mirrored glass so I don't know that you'll be able to truly film in there but it's two- tiered there's 15 cells uh each cell can hold up to three inmates each as you can see there's plenty of inmates up in here they're out on regular wreck hours right now the general population there's nothing that locks them down then mate that I was addressing they're not supposed to be at another housing area like sprag and Rule this is where literally they wreck they go out to programs they go to Alcoholics Anonymous Narcotics Anonymous reading education Church they get called out for courts everything they're here and they go out and they make moves out for all of that they have tablets and basically what we call a chirper that they can text on they can pay for those to communicate with family they can have a visit on a tablet it looks like iPhone so some facilities vmates will go and go out to a kitchen somewhere we feed trays in here medical comes over here to see them for Med pass all the things this is considered wreck when they get to be out in the day room but then when the as long as the weather's good we'll put them outside too right now control not to just keep an eye out for any sprinkles if it starts raining or anything then we'll pull them in but for right now let them get some fresh air this one's walking out without a shirt on most likely it just got haircut it's always waiting to shower out these are my Cadets right now they are detention Deputy Cadets so right now they help run the boards while they wait for an Academy to start they can see all four pods here of what's going on they keep a log on our system of who is all in and out gets real exciting when something goes down and there's all kinds of bodies and they're trying to track everyone and the times in and out it's like a hotel right you got the laundry the medical yeah it's a full service full service you know if you have 300 inmates then they're serving 900 Ms you got a laundry that's doing all the uniforms and each each washing machine holds 60 lbs of of clothing and and we and it's a Non-Stop 24-hour operation we're constantly Wasing this is all pre pre-trial stuff they're all going in and out to court legal visits and family visits and so just a lot of moving stuff all the time I have a lot of pride in the agency I have a lot of pride in the profession I have a lot of goals of of making it better than how I found it you know it's been here since 189 5 it's not going anywhere might as well make it one of the most desirable to work at and that the people not only respect it but they trust it and then when I'm gone or when I retire when I leave that it continues on that different Sheriff's going to have a different Vision but pretty confident whoever it is is going to keep saying move the Benchmark higher you know I have to say I'm really proud of our staff I always get compliments from the county attorney's office and like because of their investigation we were able to get a a conviction that tells me that they're committed to finding the truth and they're committed to Justice
